After reading all the YELP reviews I decided to come here for dinner. While traveling to Oregon and visit my son the town of Weed was my halfway point. The minute you walk in it is obviously the happening spot in town. Full of people talking, and eating, and OMG, the smells. A very diner style feel. Traveling alone has benefits and I was able to sit at the counter instantly! They have an extensive menu and serve breakfast all day. The coffee station nearby yielded a great smell of fresh coffee beans being ground for coffee. It was evening, so I did not order a cup of jo, but I did order a cocktail. They have a few selection of premade drinks. A manhattan, margarita, and a martini. I ordered the mahattan by proxy as it was all they had, but , dang it was good! They have a menu of beers but only had a couple of selections available that evening. The food menu is on a cute newspaper that tells the story of the diner. Ok, now on to the food. I orderd the french dip, which came on sourdough, not a roll. They were out of rolls, but the waiter offered me my choice of bread and an opportunity to change my order if I wanted. I chose the sourdough bread. The sandwich was good and satisfied my craving for a delicous beefy treat. The au jus had an excellent beef flavor that I wanted to drink it. lol, but seriously, a yummy sammy. The french fries were nice and crispy and hot. The food isn't fancy, but it is good. And the atmosphere is really welcoming. The wait is worth it too. I didn't leave room for pie, but you should. It looked delicous. If you happen to come through this town come here! We are always in a huge rush when we go through Weed, either on our way to Oregon or back home. Today we were finally taking a more leisurely pace home and decided to stop for lunch. Of course, I consulted Yelp and this place popped up. I'm a vegetarian so my options are usually limited but when I saw the huge menu I figured there would be options. There were a few, and also a salad bar. The whole way there my husband and I said we were in the mood for salad. Instead he ended up getting the mushroom burger and I ordered a patty melt with a Gardenburger. I had planned to get a side salad but the lure of onion rings was just too strong. I mean, I can make a salad at home. The patty melt was delicious, with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese. I went with sourdough as I'm not a fan of rye (I actually detest caraway seeds). The onion rings were those nice, fat crispy onion rings with crunchy panko breading. So good. We finished everything. Service was great even though it was busy. This place is very cleaned and well maintained which is always a good indication of how much they care about their business and reputation. Food was good, had the corned beef hash and eggs. Not a canned corned beef, asked for my hash browns extra crispy and they delivered! It's a small thing but I always ask for extra crispy at restaurants and I only get it about 1/2 the time. The server was super nice and she was hustling around that whole place and kept my coffee full, checked on me the appropriate amount of time and still had time to chat. She was awesome. What an excellent find. It was a busy place when we arrived on Easter morning, but they were getting folks in/out pretty quickly. After a short wait we were seated and drinks were promptly brought out. I had the Chicken Fried Steak and my wife had the waffle, egg, sausage combo. All of the food was awesome with special recognition for the very good waffle and outstanding homemade biscuit The staff were all friendly and did their best to upscale us into a pie or cobbler. I was looking forward to enjoying the logger burger. It has been a few years since I was there. It was awful. Different bread, lower grade hamburger, smaller patty, and tooo many additions that did not compliment each other. When I asked for some Ranch dressing for my fries, they did not have any. The garlic fries were terrible too. They had jarred garlic and not fresh garlic and did not even smell like garlic! The service was excellent. Friendly and helpful. Very accommodating. It pains me to give the Hi-Lo such a low rating but my experience today necessitates it. The Hi-Lo had dropped Liver and Onions from their menu about a year ago - the price had been approximately $13. They recent added it back as a special advertised on their outdoor marquee with no price listed. I eagerly ordered this long-missing favorite only to discover at checkout that the price was now $25. As much as I enjoy Liver and Onions, I would never pay more for it than the going rate for Prime Rib. When I questioned the price, I was given the universal BS answer of "Covid". Unless "Covid" is the secret code for "We ripped you off - get over it", that is a ridiculous claim. As a local who frequented the Hi-Lo between two and ten times a month, I hope you spend the $12 you stole from me well - you'll never see another penny from me. And as the front desk at the biggest hotel in town, I will always recommend to my guests that they travel the couple of extra miles to patronize Black Bear Diner instead of your dishonest establishment. After finally coming here, I ordered a cocktail the jolly rancher when the only two servers here did not know what it was cuz it was "new" (when I was told they have had alcohol forever) as a fellow server of 20+ years. If there is a new drink LEARN IT. All the staff is super friendly, quick with the coffee refills and the breakfast portions are huge! We were quickly seated (writing this during the pandemic) our waitress was quick to greet us and I easily made my decision on what to devour for breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a gem while driving near Mount Shasta. For me, a few key factors make or break a restaurant experience, and this place checks all the boxes. 1. Cleanliness: From the laminated menus to the bathrooms, everything was spotless, which is always a great sign. 2. Menu Variety: The menu offers a wide range of options, including (if I counted correctly) seven different types of pies! That's impressive for a roadside café. 3. My wife and I stopped in to the Hi-Lo for lunch today and left thinking we would never go back there again. The restaurant has defiantly gone down hill from what it used to be last time we were there which was a few years ago. I wanted a Turkey Club but was informed that they were "out of white Bread" if you can believe that. Turns out some crappy wheat/rye mix was the only bread they had So I ordered a Ruben thinking I'd just go with it. When I got it, the meat was chewy and the middle was so soggy I ended up taking most the crappy bread off it anyway. My wife ordered a sandwich that was supposed to have avocado on it but guess what, NO avocado. Guess they saved a buck there. So 2 cups of coffee and 2 lousy sandwiches with fries and I was $42 lighter plus tip which I was generous and rounded up to $50. read more

Weed is about half way between Sacramento CA and Bend OR. The perfect place to stop when driving between those two cities and the Hi-Lo Cafe is the place to eat when you stop. I have lost count of the number of times we have eaten here. I keep track of what I like and do not like at a restaurant. Here are my favorites: Bacon, Bacon Cheeseburger, Biscuits, Chili, Eggs over medium, Fries, Iced Tea, Milkshakes, Patty Melt, and Sausage Patty. I think that the iced tea is brewed in house and tastes like it should. Fries pass the good-when-cold test. I end up either eating all of them or asking the waitress to take the plate away. Order a milkshake. You will not regret it. They are nice and thick and full of flavor. There are some things that I consider average like hash browns, onion rings, and pancakes. Admittedly, really good pancakes are hard to make and best at restaurants that specialize in pancakes. We will be back at the Hi-Lo Cafe very soon. read more

I had two visits to the Hi-Lo Cafe during my 2 night stay in Weed, and I'm now a fan... Hi-Lo Service: You're greeted and seated as soon as you enter which is a plus if you're traveling through Weed. All our servers took our orders promptly and the kitchen was good with getting the food to the table timely. We had to wave down our server to get refills but no big deal as they took care of it immediately. Hi-Lo Cuisine: I went for the Good Earth Sandwich: Turkey, Cucumbers, avocado, lettuce and cream cheese and all the ingredients were fresh. The chicken Caesar salad was fine but Hi-Lo seems to excel with the breakfast and burgers here as evident from my nephew and brother in law's orders. That's my tip for ordering food at Hi-Lo. My strawberry milk shake was delicious and was the best thing I had there. Hi-Lo ambiance: There's definitely a small town friendly diner vibe complete with a counter and booths. Weed, CA souvenirs are available right at the entrance. The dining area wraps around the building in an "L" formation so there's plenty of seating. The Hi-Lo cafe is attached to the motel that has been family operated since 1951. The history is very interesting and much respect for keeping such an older building in great condition. My family and I stayed at the Hi-lo during the Fourth of July weekend, 2020 and we were treated like family at the Cafe! All the servers were wonderful and hard working! The food is outstanding and we enjoyed everything we ordered! I had the 14 ounce prime rib and it was prepared to a perfect medium-rare and was some of the best I've ever eaten. My wife had the beef strogranoff and enjoyed it. We enjoyed breakfast here too each day. The portions are large. The home made cheesey bread is amazing too! Great food, speedy service and amazing staff, we stopped here to have a breakfast bite before we continued on our trip back to So Cal walked in was greeted by numerous staff members, we sat towards the back so our little one wouldn't be a bother to everyone, however it seems they all loved him and his noise lol. We ordered, about 14 mints until we got our food wasnt long at all, especially for 2 adults, 3 kids order. My son and I stopped here for breakfast on our way to his college in Spokane. This place is wonderful! People are friendly and the restaurant is very comfortable and feels like home. My son ordered the hungry man chicken fried steak and eggs. 10 ounces of crunchy tender steak covered with a delicious creamy tasty gravy. Along side of the chicken fried steak was 3 over easy eggs, a mess of delicious home fry potatoes, and two not one but two large fluffy home made biscuits. I ordered the same but less the chicken fried steak and mine came with 6 thick juicy slices of wonderfully smoked bacon. The food was delicious and enough for two people to share one meal. I remember stopping here many years ago as we passed through on our way to or from Idaho. This time we were heading home from Oregon. It is a great resting stop. We were greeted with smiles and an open table. Their food selection is amazing- and they even have homemade, in house selections. I wish I had remembered the name of our server, as he was extremely nice and welcoming. He was helpful when asked for suggestions as well.
