A beautiful morning for a drive. A quick spin on the Will Rogers Tpk. working our way between and around the heavy truck traffic and the annoying drivers that think the left-hand lane is for cruising. Then taking highway 69 N. at the Big Cabin Exit for the relaxing final miles. On the road side the cows graze in the pastures and redtail hawks are perched on the fences looking for breakfast. The Hi-Way Café is a quintessential Mother Road diner, decorated with iconic symbols of America's past. A must stop for the photo op and good food. Their menu is big, covering a little of everything. This ain't no Mexican restaurant, though. If you are a tourist stick with diner food: breakfast, a burger, something fried, or simply a cup of coffee and a big slice of fresh pie. For us a couple of eggs, crispy hash browns, crispy bacon, all cooked exactly as ordered. My wife added a big fluffy fresh biscuit with gravy and for me just the gravy. The gravy was instant; common. Very few diners make it from scratch. A few crumbles of country breakfast sausage for seasoning would have made it perfect. The coffee was good; our cups stayed full. Friendly service. Be sure to check out the car with all the stickers on it. Also, the old Jukebox. It is still filled with 45's; song titles that only your grandparents would remember!

    Satisfied customer saluting Bill!

We eat here often for Breakfast and lunch but this was our first experience with steak night. It only happens on the first Saturday of each month from 4 to 8 or until they run out of steak. They have ribeyes or an 8 oz. Fillet. There were no negatives to the meal. Service, price, we ate in the garage so the atmosphere was fun. (Right next to the world record holding Rambler) Our steaks were cooked perfect. A real pro had to be on the open flame grill to have enough char but not too much, enough pink but not to much. We are planning on not missing any steak nights in the future.

Official attempt Guinness world book of records for most stickers on a car.

Good food. Owner had time to give a history to our group, plus a tour of some of Route 66 decor in motel rooms.

The vegetables in the veggie omelette still had some snap and just the right amount of cheese. Very tasty. Crispy hashbrowns! Perfect.

Chicken is their name, but the menu covers everything you would expect in a small-town diner. Breakfast was our meal of choice today. They lay a plate of breakfast goodness on the table here! My usual again today, check the pictures. Everything cooked perfectly as ordered. The honorable mention awards on the plate go to the bacon and the gravy. The bacon cooked crisp, the way I like it. Not for everyone's taste; it works for me. This was crisp bacon, country smoke house thick cut. Sturdy and crisp enough that I could use it as a knife cut the eggs up. Or maybe even use it to butter toast. Yeah, I liked it. The gravy appears to be real, homemade. If it was a mix, then the cook gave it some extra love with sausage drippings. It was good. A big clean restaurant, Excellent friendly service. Easy access. Today's Café table top advertisement winner is Larry's Body Works. Not an especially creative or catchy ad, but I liked the picture of Larry's Rat Rod!

There were lots of servers, so we were well taken care of, but I felt rushed through the meal. We had not been in before, so it took some time to decide what we wanted. The menu is a little hard to follow with some things listed on a menu board on the wall (that no one pointed out to us). The waitress came back like every two minutes asking if we were ready, so we just felt a little rushed through that process. The food itself was hit and miss. My son did not enjoy the chicken fried steak sandwich, but my other son loved his Monterey chicken. Some of our chicken strips were good and some were really tough. The fried chicken and grilled chicken sandwich were both pretty good. Overall, it was ok, but not our best meal of the trip.

I've been to hundreds of McDonalds over the years and this one is just average. Maybe the building itself is big, but they're not the exclusive vendor here, sharing the food court with a regular Subway, and honestly you could call the McDonald's in the Atlanta airport a bigger building without stretching the truth. We were driving from Tulsa to Joplin when we pulled off, parked and walked in. It does sit above the highway, which gives you a slightly different view while you're working through a cheeseburger and fries, almost like you're hovering over the traffic. I ordered at the kiosk and the food took longer than usual, but it was prepared properly. They have the standard Coke fountain stocked with straws and napkins, but no ketchup dispenser. The burger was made to order so it was fresh, which helped. Food on the floor, a dirty table and a light crowd summed up the rest of the experience. No need to go out of your way for this one. This cool McDonald's location first came to my attention when I heard mention of it in the lyrics to the song Choctaw Bingo, by James McMurtry. That's the first line of the song I quoted above. It's a great song and references several spots up in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma, this McDonald's being the most famous. The lyrics mention "that big McDonalds, you know that one that's built up on that big old bridge across the Will Rogers turnpike..." Initially when heard the song I had no idea it was describing a real place. It sounded kinda far-fetched that someone built a McDonalds up on a bridge over a turnpike. When I learned that this McDonald's was a for real place, and at one time it was the largest McDonald's in the world, I knew I had to come here. My first visit was three years ago. It wasn't very busy that afternoon and I got a chance to speak with an Employee and her Manager, and they graciously shared with me their understanding of the history of the place. The title of largest McDonald's had slipped away long before they worked here. Summers fade and roses die. These days, in terms of size, this McDonald's is a mere shadow of its former self. It's quite underwhelming, actually. Especially if you climb the stairs as I did my first visit, thinking, wow, this place must be huge! Where its dining area once commanded the entire expanse of the Archway, the one time largest McDonald's now shares the space with a Subway. How humiliating; a freaking Subway. But whatever. What hasn't changed, and the reason I give this place Four Stars is the view from the dining room, poised directly over the Will Rogers Turnpike. I love watching traffic burning up the Turnpike while I'm having a snack. That's fun, and unique, and definitely worth checking out if you're anywhere in the vicinity. Like the song says: Strap those kids in give em a lil bit of Benadryl and a cherry coke, we're goin' to Oklahoma, we're gonna have us a time Mikey C says: We're gonna have us a time.
