I'm not often out this way anymore but when I am I make time to swing by. The commissary is my main grocery store whether it's Schofield or Hickam. I avoid the NEX one at all costs. It's just not worth the hassle or the crowds... it's nuts. Hickam's bathrooms are consistently clean as well as the commissary over all. It's nice having things in order and clean. That really matters to me. It's well organized, they have a good selection of items and the shelves are usually well stocked. I've had them order special request items and it's been smooth and they have arrived on island sooner than anticipated! If you have access I recommend you swing by. Until next time read more

I enjoy shopping at this particular one because it is very "mellow" compared to the NEX one. I am handicapped and am always well "taken" care of here: easy parking, greeted, scooter ready and employees are friendly and considerate. The Hickam Air Force Base Commissary rules! It's a nice escape from the crowds and long lines at the Pearl Harbor Commissary. Although on a much smaller scale and not as attractive, this commissary has a flower shop, poke counter, deli, bakery, sushi counter, and warehouse section for bulk goods. Also, it's a stand-alone building, so parking is convenient. Hours: Sun-Fri 0900 to 2000; Sat 0800-2000. Holiday hours vary. Pretty good selection of produce, proteins, and dairy, including local and organic options. When pay day comes around, expect items in demand to fly off of the shelves though. That's a given. Mexican and Asian goods are not too shabby! The deli prepares fresh sandwiches, as well as pre-made ones, and acai bowls. Limited items, like Pizzelle's or Starbucks seasonal coffees, are usually on its own shelf and placed in the middle of an aisle or at the approach to the registers. Gotta snatch em up as soon as you see them! A commisary is a Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), which provides groceries to military personnel, retirees, and their families at a much lower savings than commercial stores. Since this commisary is on JBPHH base, IDs are checked at the register. As usual, patrons pay a 5% surcharge which goes towards the cost of maintaining the store and building new ones. Baggers work for tips only, and at this location they're usually teenagers. Cash back maximum is $25 or an ATM is on the premises. The restroom isn't the greatest. But that's not why you come here! If you're particular about cleanliness and such, your best bet is to use the restrooms outside of the base exchange across the street. read more

It's great my husband is air national guard! I get to buy some cheap food but need to look all the prices as some food is more expensive than outside supermarkets/Sam's. Especially the pre packaged salads, nope too expensive. Frozen food I noticed was the best deals! Milk, cereal, dry goods too. Was super surprised there was a good Asian and ethnic food sections. Will go back to buy certain things I know is good deals but don't fall for higher prices on certain items...should make a chart lol read more

Very warm, welcoming place to food shop for military families and military retirees. Small, quaint but well stocked. I never have to go anywhere else once I shop here. Often overshadowed by the larger Pearl Harbor NEX commissary at Moanalua complex 3 miles away, this neighborhood pleasantly feeling store has less "drama", more smiles, and more aloha than the larger joint base sister store. But that is not a surprise for anytime you have more crowds you have more chaos. I like the extensive wide selection of fresh, Hawaii-local grown, and organic produce found here in a store quite smaller than the average Safeway. For example, my local Safeway stocks at the most, 3-4 types of apples. This commissary stocks 8-10. My local Safeway stocks usually 2 types of pears. This commissary stocks 4-6 different types of pears, etc... The savings are significant too. As with all commissaries, they also stock favorites from across the globe.... food staples from Japan to Germany are available too and bring back a touch of nostalgia for those of us who served overseas. I usually come to this commissary to find grocery items that I cannot find at the NEX Moanalua Commissary. It is calm and quiet here, neatly organized, much easier to navigate the aisles and the staff is friendlier and very helpful too. With the changes being made at the NEX Moanalua Commissary and the early closing hours until those changes are are done, we came to Hickam AFB Commissary, who was also going through changes when we arrived. Mr. Raymond from the produce Dept. was very helpful in directing me to and at times himself finding what I needed, though it was a bit busy and hectic in there also. I was able to get my grocery shopping done before closing time. So grateful for staff that care about the clients and go the extra mile (or isle). Though we live closer to the NEXComm. the Hickam AFBComm. has become my commissary of choice. read more

The best commissary on the island! Their fruits and vegetable staff has ALWAYS been good to us. Every time we ask for assistance they are always happy to help. The meat dept is also very helpful as they will cut steaks the way we want them. The Deli selection is the best on the island and again the staff is always helpful. The Hickam Commissary is less crowded and their shelves are full. Never had a bad experience there as the cashiers are very friendly. You can tell Management has positive control of all Depts. I wished that the other locations were the same. read more

Went of commissary this morning and found there is no prices on the shelves for anything. It just tells you to scan. Saw a poster there with a QR code on it telling you to scan it and download the app to get prices. I scanned the code and got the app. Only to find it is for iPad, iPhone, and other apple products. I don't carry any of these, only an android phone. So not wanting a big surprise at the register I left. guess ill be going to costco a lot more. read more

Went with a buddy this past weekend to pick up provisions. Prices are reasonable, by Hawaii standards. Lots of choices, and items that you cannot find outside of the gates. Store needs a little TLC though, looks very dated and old. read more

Some workers at the Hickam Commissary continue to flout common sense mask rules meant to protect us all from the deadly COVID virus. During my last visit on Thursday, 5 Nov 2020, I witnessed three workers potentially spreading infections: - Two stockers had their masks down off their noses. Stockers have been repeated mask wearing violators at Hickam, seeming to think that since they're moving boxes of food that it makes it OK not to wear their mask properly. No... - Once again, the sushi chef might as well have not been wearing his mask at all as he prepared the food. Would you buy sushi from someone potentially infected as they breathed all over your sushi? - Most customers throughout the store wore their masks properly, completely over their mouths and noses. Now if only the Hickam management could enforce its own rules and make sure all employees are doing the same! read more

Probably my favorite military commissary on the island. Hickam's is smaller and doesn't have as much stuff as the others, but it is way less crowded (Although I still won't try and go around paydays). Definitely keep this in mind for my regular grocery needs, repeat and recommend! read more

It is incredible how entitled some crappy people act towards people just trying to do their job. We're in a WORLDWIDE crisis and yet people still bitch at people trying to do their jobs. I came this morning and the line to get in was LONG. I knew there were different hours for specific groups so I just grabbed a cart and got in line. The line started to move, I get to the front and notice the blonde woman woman directing the line had made a second line, she was announcing that those were the people that weren't 60 & over so they'll go in when the commissary opens at 9. She said she did it this way so the people (like myself) who'd been waiting for upwards of an hour won't be cut in front of by people just showing up. Made complete sense & it was appreciated as I'd seen a bumrush a few weeks ago at Sam's club. It was their way of maintaining order. But the 2 sailors and air craft mechanic (dropping titles while they complained like ANYONE cares) could not comprehend the logic at all. The mechanic even made a comment about how the commissary should hire HIM because he'd do a better job. Get out. This woman (I believe her name was Jenna) was out there in the scorching hot sun, for HOURS keeping everyone in line and in order to follow the rules and make sure everyone is safe. If you can't even follow directions to get in another line when told, you couldn't handle her job of dealing with hundreds like you daily. Thank you to our commissary workers who are out there every single day. I can't imagine going to work every single day hoping you come home still healthy. To the woman directing the line outside, you are doing a great job, I appreciate so much that you didn't let people lose their place. With so much uncertainty in the world right now, the last thing we need is crappy people. It is so much easier to just shut up and let people do their jobs, be kind or both. I have to give this commissary 5 stars. It may not be as big as some or even the nearby Navy commissary, but I like it a lot. It carries everything you need for the most part, the staff is friendly and I can get in and out in a hurry. Like so many other commissaries, the downfall is the produce, but since that has become a "known" to most people I can't let if affect my rating. Just buy the produce local or at Costco. read more

In 2015 when I first came to Hawaii on navy reserve orders, I first started going to the navy commissary but wasn't pleased. It was always crowded and the people were rude. I was then turned on to the Hickman Commissary. The first time I walked in I was greater with a warm smile and a pleasant salutation. As I walked through the store, which wasn't very crowded, all the patrons were very nice. Most were air force but I did see several sailors too. I now visit the Hickman commissary at least twice per week and each time I am pleasantly surprised and impressed with the store. I highly recommend stopping by, even if it's a bit out of the way or not on your way home. read more

I prefer this commissary to the NEX commissary specifically because there are fewer people here and more items in stock, even during a payday weekend. I'll happily drive a bit farther to avoid a checkout line that wraps all the way around the NEX. Although this commissary is smaller than the NEX, I've never had an issue finding the key grocery items that I need for the week at Hickam. For example, black beans always seem to be sold out at the NEX. At the Hickam location, they have always been in stock with several varieties of black beans. They also have really fresh produce, including lots of organic options, like organic romaine lettuce for delicious salads. The employees seem to be happier at Hickam, too. They are much more easygoing at the checkout and I can usually find someone to help me if I can't find something in the aisles. Forget finding an available employee at the NEX on the weekend. Even if the selection is a bit smaller, I find that it's been worth the trip to Hickam. read more

I'm torn on this one. This is where I do most of my grocery shopping mostly because its the most convenient to my home. They have a pretty expansive selection of fruits and vegetables and carry seasonal vegetables to include the ones you would expect to find on the mainland as fall arrives (apples, squash, etc), however there are times that the quality isn't top notch. This is especially true with strawberries, tomatoes, other berries and bananas. The meats have a pretty expansive selection and I have never had a problem with freshness. For some reason though there have been times where you'll stop by and they are completely sold out of chicken which leads me to think people may be stockpiling chicken for an apocalypse I'm unaware of since the commissary in Dayton also ran out of chicken. The lay out of the store is a bit odd with dairy and frozen food being towards the front of the store so I find myself having to grab all my non-perishables and then come back to get my perishables on a loop back around. Also all ethnic food is not in one aisle it's separated. They have a pretty expansive selection of ethnic food, but sadly I still have to go elsewhere to get some Asian cooking needs. I also am not a fan of the seafood department here, but thankfully living in Hawaii there's plenty of seafood options out there. The sushi counter offers a pretty good option for take out sushi when you don't feel like cooking and the deli also makes a pretty decent sandwich. read more

Of the two commissaries near me, this one is by far my favorite. However, it's only my fave by being a lesser of two evils, so to speak. It's definitely a decent store, but it's too small, the cashiers are very hit-or-miss as far as being the type of cashier you're hoping they'll be. The baggers have all been fabulous so far, so there's that. The parking lot (and probably that whole complex) is poorly set up, and parking is usually very annoying. It's very hard to find anyone who works there if you need assistance with anything, unless you're willing to walk across to store until you find SOMEONE. Their coupon policy is also getting progressively more strict and therefore progressively more annoying. I try to do my shopping at MCBH, but when I only need a few things, I come here. read more

This review is specifically of the Deli inside of the Hickam Commissary. Even more specificity, it is a review of the sandwiches made by the Deli inside the Hickam commissary. They're good. Okay, I guess I should expound a little. To get on base you will need a vehicle pass, and to get into the Commissary you will need an ID that indicates you have "commissary privileges". If you can get that far, you can get a very good made-to-order sandwich for a reasonable price: $5 for a 6" and $8 for a 12". You get your choice of veggies and condiments (much like SubWay) and they really pile on the meat (unlike SubWay). Shoots, just look at the picture! read more

Shelves are always stocked and a friendly staff. It is much easier to find parking and less crowded than the NEX commissary, especially on the busy days. It seems majority of the lanes are always open, because I hate spending an hour or so shopping for groceries to only have to wait another 20-30 mins for the two open lanes to get to the register. read more

I prefer this commissary over the Pearl Harbor one, though the Pearl Harbor one has a bigger selection. This one is smaller, but still large. My biggest complaint is the produce. Why, oh why is there moldy produce out for sale?! I realize that we do live on an island in the middle of the ocean and everything is shipped, but moldy food is not acceptable! I've stopped buying produce here because of that. This commissary is less crowded than the others. Keeping items in stock seems to be a problem lately, but again, there's that whole island thing, so I try not to get frustrated about that. One positive.. the sushi. Definitely try the sushi. They have the best grocery store sushi I've ever had! (well besides Wegmans.. because Wegmans has the best grocery store sushi ever!!) read more

If you want to shop for a few items or to stock up for two weeks or more, you're able to at Hickam AFB Commissary. They took all the appropriate steps to ensure our safety as well as their's in order to provide excellent customer service with ample products for mostly everyone's needs in this chaotic time. Just make sure you check the hours of operation so that you don't spend too long a time in line to enter. The entire store was clean and organized in a manner that was easy for shoppers to grab their items and move on quickly to the next aisle. The employees allowed enough people in as other patrons exited the building. Parking was not a problem and the line was a bit longer than the normal but we are in times that the new normal will be just that. Please be courteous and kind to all the employees at the commissary as they are doing their best to provide a safe and healthy place for all of us to shop and for them to be able to provide this privelige to us. read more

Prefer over Navy/Pearl Harbor because the shelves don't look like locusts have been through. However, some friends stopped going to Hickam years ago because of the long lines of cars and hassle at the base gates. Overall, mixed review, but still prefer to shop there. It may be smaller, but best to avoid days around paydays, the 15th & 30th. Not sure why since credit cards are the norm nowadays, not cash or check. Noticed a day or two before payday, the shelves are well-stocked. Not so much a day or two after! Pluses: Although smaller, usually better stocked than Navy. Warehouse section for bulk items. Less crowded. Parking lot is closer and less jammed than Navy. There's a few shady spots. Navy Federal Credit Union ATM now located inside the entrance. Post Office right next door. Shares parking with BX, First Hawaiian, and Hickam Federal CU. Minuses: At self checkout, monitors can't seem to keep their hands off purchases, moving them around without asking. Did not like it before COVID and since COVID definitely don't like taking groceries home that were recently touched by strangers with no masks. Monitors should focus on clearing terminal glitches so we don't have to stand there waiting on them. Carpet beetles. Someone else mentioned this problem in a Google review. Returned from three weeks overseas to find carpet beetles all over the kitchen. According to research, they are often brought home in groceries. Since reading that, on two occasions, noticed carpet beetles crawling out of grocery bags as I put them in the car at Hickam. Since 95% of my groceries come from Hickam, can only deduce that commissary is the source. Boxes of pasta and bags of coffee seem to be prime vectors. The place needs to be fumigated or tented. At night, parking lot is not lit. Makes getting around difficult. Complained about this years ago but nothing changed. The restroom sometimes smells like there's a sewage backup and could be cleaner. Better to use the BX facilities. Closes at 2000 (8 pm) rather than 2100. At certain times, can take forever to get through the base gates to shop. read more

This isn't my most conveniently located commissary but I still seem to save time by going there. I find that the isles are a little less tightly packed together, the groceries are logically arranged, and there aren't quite as many people to weave between as you search for what you need. And that's really about it. Fast, efficient, and inexpensive compared to regular grocery stores. read more

This is by far the best commissary on the island. In terms of price on the island, you can't beat commissary prices compared to Safeway or Times. This commissary definitely doesn't have as much of a selection as the pearl harbor one off-base. I usually can find about 90% of what i'm looking for during a weekly trip. Since I tend to go for healthier food, that's a good statistic because most other grocery stores don't carry what i'm looking for. With that said, since they have a "health" section, you have to spend the time to dig for what you are looking for. For example, if I'm looking for Mary's gone crackers, they honestly could either be in the cracker section or the health food section. If you are looking for sun dried tomatoes in olive oil, that could be in the mexican display in produce, the tomato section in pasta, the tomato section in canned goods or the jarred vegetable section by the pickles. I guess that can be said about any store, but I feel I am searching more often here than other stores. This commissary is the best though, because it is never crowded, even on paydays. I always go after work during the week, and I believe I had to wait in a line of 3 people once. When I lived in Mililani, a normal payday at Schofield could mean a register line around the store. I'm assuming since the navy housing is off base, everyone goes to the commissary off base as well, which makes it feel like costco everyday. If you need a really wide selection of EVERYTHING, go to pearl. If you need the basic veggies and canned beans, go to Hickam. read more

I like this commissary the best out of all the ones on the island. Yes, better than the NEX commissary. The reason why, is there is always parking and it's not that crowded, even on a payday. It is out of the way because you have to go onto Hickam Air Force base, but it will still save you time. The produce section is small, but everything is fresh and they have everything you mainly need. The seafood section is small, but they have the usuals and also poke for sale. Not sure of the quality though, as I have never bought any from here. The store is easy to navigate and everything is in order. They even have some things that the NEX does not, such as my favorite Cacique Queso Fresco Mexican cheese. They also have a pretty decent sized deli and refrigerated aisle full of other amazing cheeses such as Irish cheddar, Gouda, Brie, etc. and also an array of sausages and salamis. There's a made to order sushi station as well, offering California rolls, spicy ahi, ahi, salmon, shrimp, etc. The line also moves fast so if your time is precious you should come here. read more

This is my favorite commissary on the island. I like it because it's not as crowded as the other ones. Parking is easier, and the workers are generally really friendly. If you are looking for an item and they don't carry it, they'll order it for you. There's free coffee in the front, and a small selection of plants. They have the Brown Cow yogurt that I love, and the produce section isn't too shabby. It's crowded on paydays, but commissaries are always crowded on paydays. No surprise there! read more

NEVER.. I REPEAT, NEVER go on pay day or pay week. You will be extremely sorry. The lines are way too long and by the time you checkout, all your "goodies" feel like they've been left in the car way too long. The parking lot has tons of parking, but it seems that I am always park at the end. I think because its located right next to the Exchange, it's always full. Regardless, you will always find parking. Every person that enters this commissary must have their military ID and you can't take any drinks inside the store. If you accidentally try to bring it in, they will tell you to leave it in the front and to get it after the grocery shopping. I've been guilty several times trying to sneak my ice cold starbucks. As far as the prices go, we're happy with the prices considering its an island. It's def cheaper than shopping for groceries anywhere else on the island. They don't label the herbs so sometimes you have to do a taste test to see if its cilantro or parsley. They hardly ever have beets.. :sigh: I love me some apple beet juice. Other than that, its an extremely organized store. And always be sure to tip the baggers! In my experience, my baggers have been extremely sweet and nice. read more

I usually go to the NEX but love coming here at times becomes it seems to be quicker. You can get in and out with what you need and they usually have shorter lines. Never had a bad experience here so far and love tipping the Teen baggers as they are normally appreciative and I love seeing their faces light up! read more

Since I got married to my hubby we've always gone to the Pearl Harbor NEX. But the other day we decided to try the Hickam NEX, mainly because it was before Christmas and knowing how NEX is on a regular day ... yeah, we didn't even want to try it. I liked the organization of it, but like any store I walk into I hate not knowing where everything is. So we literally had to walk through every isle to try to find what we (mostly I) wanted. Did we find it? Weeell .. kind of ... The reason I like Schofield commissary is because of the international food isle, I can also always find things that "we have in Sweden". At the NEX commissary I haven't tried my luck because I've never needed the same things when we've gone here. I didn't really need it this time either but I wanted to see what they had. It is possible that there was an isle with what I wanted, but if so it was hidden from me. The positive thing is that we could easily find parking, and there weren't that many people inside the commissary. It was nice being able to walk around without almost bumping into people all the time. For the future however I think we'll stay with the other two commissaries, but it was worth a try. read more

This store is small compared to Pearl Harbor Commissary, but nice and organized. There's not a huge crowd that comes here, so way better to go onto base and shop quicker, due to smaller crowds, then deal with the 'just got paid frenzy' at Pearl. They have pretty much the same things, just a smaller amount of them. There was a very annoyingly loud old lady there yesterday, and it drove my husband I nuts. First she yelled at me, and said "there's a bunch of kids here today!"... Ugh, ok. Then she yelled down the aisle at a lady who had two children with her, "ma'am are you in line?" Like five times, when she could have easily walked up the line and asked. Then the cashier asked her if she needed a bagger, "why the hell you guys keep asking me? I said I will carry my own stuff out!" He was very nice, and told her he didn't hear her the first time. Almost gave the place less stars, but it's not their fault crazy people come here! I will come here weekends after paydays, sucks for me because I shop once a week, every Friday, unless I have duty, then it's Saturday. But we'll worth the drive to avoid the crazy crowds... Just need to stay away from that old lady... So I can have a stress free shopping spree. read more
