Safeway Pearl City has the best cakes around. Their tiramisu is so moist and so delicious I can't believe that it is the best I've ever had and I've been around the world and back to include Italy. It was my daughter's birthday and she requested the tiramisu as her cake of choice and it made all our day. It cost $25.99 and worth every penny! The service is always professional and polite. They have a great deli area to build a combo meal but wish it was open longer and didn't run out so early. Other Safeways are open longer with more food. I live just two minutes away from this location, so I visit their deli when I'm ono for it. I often encounter the associate named LUZ, her customer service, on average is subpar. She always doesn't seem very happy to be there, and she does not hesitate to make her customers feel that. It never bothered me, nonetheless. Today, however, I stood in line behind a mother and her son. Luz was tending to them as I waited for my turn, then LUZ just started asking, in a very loud manner, several times "ANYTHING ELSE?!?", while the mom and son were deciding (in an uncomfortable way, as she was pressuring them). As I observed this, I couldn't help to notice how rude this behavior was for a customer service staff. I continued to mind my own, until she then turns to me, and RUDELY says, "CAN I HELP YOU?!?". So, I answered that she is being very rude to the customers in front of me and that she needs to exercise patience because they are not finished yet. The boy thanked me for giving them more time, and he shows photos on his phone of what they needed more, LUZ, showing irritation towards the mom and the son, demands the phone so she can see for herself. Which again is not a very ideal way treat customers when you are representing a company like Safeway. No Aloha. Nothing. Just sheer rudeness. Fortunately, Judith was there. She smiled and patiently helped the mom and son instead, then helped me afterwards. The boy thanked me for showing patience, something LUZ did not, I personally commend and thank JUDITH for showing professionalism and ALOHA. That's what SAFEWAY is all about - ALOHA from staff like JUDITH. LUZ, however, needs to be corrected by the management ASAP. I understand working in customer service is not easy, sometimes even frustrating, we are just humans after all. However, the mom and the son, and I, were not demanding excellent service from LUZ. Shopping for specifics... Whenever I'm searching for something specific I do rely on Safeway to find that item as I have done in the past regardless of the location. This Waimalu Plaza location is nice and convenient though this complex is located on a busy intersection the placements of the entrances does make getting there easy and stress free. As Safeway does share ample parking with its neighboring tenants I do notice that late in the night many of them are closed making it a breeze. What I also do love about Safeway is how they get very creative with their decor using items they have to create art and keeping up with the seasonal fun items as I walk in I noticed that with the space above the display cases so look up and you'll see some fun and creative decor. They also have the DMV kiosk as well to get it done all hours of the day and avoid the long lines at the Satellite City Hall among other service making it a great place for not just putting together a meal but getting things done as well. I ordered a half sheet cake vanilla cake with strawberry filling for my daughter's graduation 2 weeks in advance and the day of pickup they called to tell me that they were out of vanilla cake. I really didn't have a choice to order from another bakery at the last minute, so I accepted chocolate cake. Then when I went to pick it up, they ran out of cake boxes. I generally shop the sales and plan my meals around them. Since I only cook twice a week it works well for me. Their app is easy to use. The associates are helpful and pleasant to deal with. I place my order, reserve a date and time then move on with my day. They notify me before they start shopping and let me know if there are any issues like out of stock items and always letting me know what replacements are available. They will also match the prices if replacements are requested. When the order is complete they notify me by text it's ready for pickup and will hold it until 8:00 in the evening. When I'm on my way I just click on the app to let them know, pull into the marked pickup stall for this service and click again to let them know I'm there. If you care about food safety, I strongly recommend not buying meat from this location. Today I returned meat I had purchased two days ago that had already spoiled well before its expiration date. After that, I bought ground turkey with a sell-by date several days out, assuming it would be safe. Unfortunately, it was also spoiled. It had a noticeable odor and a slimy texture -- clear signs it was no longer fresh. This is now the second time I've had meat go bad from this store before the printed date. This review is for the pick up service mainly. I messed up and told my daughter in-law I'd pick up the order after my grandsons basketball game. Unfortunately the game went longer than expected and my other son had car trouble delaying us a little bit. I thought it would be ok as long as the store was open not realizing pick up closed at 8pm. February 2025: I had a great experience recently thanks to Safeway's outstanding customer service. Took me quite awhile trying to figure out how to process a digital coupon for yogurt. Finally found a worker named Dorian to help me. He was busy but gladly stopped what he was doing. I already had the Safeway app so that was a plus. Dorian enthusiastically walked me through the process and shared other information regarding the app including checkout procedures. Rating on Service, should be a zero in my opinion**** Maybe, this is my perception and I don't understand. But I went around 530a this morning before work. Register 3 I believe. Cheryl was my cashier. She was friendly I guess. Greeted/Acknowledged me. But what I didn't like...I walked up and she was spraying and wiping the checkout conveyor belt. It was still wet. And she didn't bother wiping it more. I'm placing food and beverages on this? She continued spraying and wiping in between ringing my items. She didn't place all my items at the area they normally place so you can grab them. She left half of the items on the conveyor belt...hm? Your boneless chicken wings, ( nuggets) are terrible, the spicy ones are not spicy, and dry, with too much coating. Temperature wise they were warm at best. Even at $5 per pound, it was not a good deal. Terrible food at any cost is not a good deal. Suggest changing your vendor brand, and serving them both temperature hot and the spicy ones to be SPICY. Safeway has very fresh vegetables and fruits and many times you can find items you can't find in local grocery stores. So I'm commenting on the way the cut fruits are sold. I mean today I spent $5.99 on a bowl of fruit. I'm on the go so I figure ahhh eat fruit, it won't be messy while driving. GEEEZ LOUISE!!! the fact that each of these pineapple cuts was so big that they could be cut in 4's or maybe even 6 pieces each pineapple blows my mind. And because Safeway is opened 24 hours, you can pay your car registration at a time that is convenient for you. The kiosk is so easy peasy! In and out in no time, it's as easy as making a money withdrawal from a back machine. The directions on the screen is big and easy to follow... After you pay, you'll receive an updated car registration and the car registration sticker preprinted with your car license plate information. There is a sign: machine will not accept secured credit cards or payment with multiple credit cards. My first option to paying for my car registration, will always be using this kiosk. When entering the store, the kiosk will be on your right, next to the bank machine, near the baked goods. Tons of parking! read more

So this safeway is ALWAYS BUSY. The workers are pretty much ok. I mean... I did have a few moments where the cashier is EXTREMELY RUDE. But these were the younger workers. I'd say late teens, maybe early twenties. So from my past experience, I try to avoid going to the registers with the young looking cashiers. Hehehe... Otherwise, they DO have good sales IF you know how to use them. You MIST download their app to get the best savings. Oh AND... by downloading the app, it prevents other people using YOUR coupons and rewards. How?! Apparently if you walk into the store, the stores system automatically links with your device. Once it does that, it can pick up the number you enter into their pad when you cash out. This will automatically scan through your coupons and sales you clipped in the app. So this is why it's important to open the app and clip the coupons. Because when you go into the store and renter you number, it'll connect with your device you have on you and automatically apply every single coupon you clipped in the app. Which is why it shows that I save over $20" each time I shop. Believe it or not, it really does make a difference. I LOVE cashing out at Safeway. I feel like I won the lotto when they tell me my final cost. Hehehe... I'm always waiting til that LAST PRICE DROP & then I'm like "WOOHOO!" Everyone cracks up laughing because I'm so excited. Even the customers after me starts getting anxious as to see how much they saved. Most will see how much money I've knocked off and asked... "wait, how much was her total. They'll say it was @ $600, now it's at $183." They'll look at me & ask how the hell?! So I tell them, download the app. The cashier confirms it's the app. Then I end up telling them HOW to use the app & clip all the coupons. That way the next time they come in, they'll see all the deductions. I'm telling you... the app really helps. But remember... it's linked to the number YOU HAVE on you in the store. So if your husband decides to use your number to get the discounts and coupons, but doesn't go store WITH YOU, he WONT get the sale prices!!! Unless he HAS YOUR PHONE! And if you use a house number, I'm sure it's versatile, BUT... remember, if he can use it, so can others. Which means, you may loose out on those $5 off coupons that you wanted to use. Why?! Because then other people can use the same number and then swipe your coupons. They might give your your rewards, but still, you loose you chance for a lower cost. You see, they usually have $1 off, $2 off, $3 off & $5 off coupons for specific items or after spending a specific amount of groceries, these do ADD UP. If all those $-OFF coupons apply to your purchase that day, guess what... that's NOT JUST $5 off, it's $1+$2+$3+$5=$11 TOTAL OFF your amount. (ONLY TO WHAT IS APPLIED) So yeah... those $-OFF coupons REALLY DO HELP TOO! You also get these reward tokens. You can use them to get a free item or 2. Depending on how much tokens you have. But sometimes they'll have a can of pork & beans for 1 token. And if you have 5, you could use 1 of the 5 to get that free can. You could also combine it too. So let's say a can of pork & beans is 1-token & foil is 2-tokens & a pack Scotts 12-roll toilet paper is 3-tokens, that's a total of 5-tokens. You could use the 5- tokens to get AL of that FOR FREE! These are just examples guys. They have different varieties throughout the month. So you'll ha e to pick and choose what you want to use the tokens for. And YES! I do believe they DO expire! So use them when you can. If your a frequent shopper, I'd say build it up to where you have a lot of tokens and then use them all at once before they expire. Otherwise, if your like me and shop there when needed, I'd say use your tokens ASAP so you don't waste them. It'll only go back to the store. It's better to make use of what you can get for your loyalty with the store than lose out on something that you did deserve. Whew!! Sorry guys! I know that was A LOT. Florist dept was horrible.(Mother's Day) Flowers in buckets with NO price listed. Many customers asking each other if we saw a price listed anywhere. Finally a young unfriendly angry person arrive in the florist dept. & asked her the retail. She literally GRABBED the flowers out of my hand and angrily went to the back of the counter . Customers around me looked at each other and couldn't believe how her customer service was presented. We all commented that if prices Was listed we wouldn't have had to ask. Decided to give Safeway another try with their other special. They had the chicken wings on sale for $5 a pound. Called and asked if they could hold 3# of their Salt & Vinegar wings for me...said I would have to come down to order the $5 Friday specials. Arrived about 10 minutes later...they only had 2#'s left and would need to wait 45 minutes. I asked if I could get a rain check...one of them said I couldn't, the other said I could. Since I had a long wait for the wings, I went to the cashier to get the rain check. She called the Deli and the person she spoke to said I can't get one. I informed her one of them said I could. I come here frequently to shop for groceries since it's close and I like the quality of the produce here. I have gotten fruit, healthy dips for my pita chips and my Diet Cranberry juice here. Prices are descent and of course with COVID 19, it's mandatory to wear a mask and keep 6 feet away. They are always fully stocked on food for my dietary needs. I have to watch what I eat now that I have to monitor my sugars and cholesterol. Anyway, the store is always clean and items are easy to find. Checking out is easy. You must bring your recycled back or they charge you for a paper bag. I definitely like this location as it's not to busy when we come here on a weekday. Parking is plenty up front so there's always a spot to park if you are looking to come here. I would definitely come back here and am pleased to find what I'm looking for. read more

unclear and lengthy return process. clerk seemed unknowledgeable about the return process, unnecessarily utilizing calculator multiple times to tally up a total that was already on the receipt? she was also inept at using the calculator, causing unnecessary delay. she then claimed she had to calculate the price because the prices had changed? not true, I had just purchased the item a few hours before. I waited for 10 minutes for her to have to re-do the return process multiple times. She also didn't state clearly what the process was. She handed me the receipt and I began to walk away as that usually means the process is done. She then goes "did you insert your card?" Maam you didn't tell me to! Most places don't require you to insert your card for a receipt, it's an automated system. She then asked me to fill out a piece of paper with my address, full name, and phone number? So unnecessary and weird? Never have I ever had to do that. It was also her 3rd time asking for my phone number. I don't know if it was just this clerk who was inept but if this is Safeway's actual return process, they need to simplify this antiquated and drawn out process. The clerk should also communicate the process rather than just assuming I would know whether / when to insert my card, etc. the machine didn't even light up! She also told me to swipe and the swipe didn't even work, it was supposed to be a chip insert. AND the signature pen didn't work, and I had to do more than one signature? the whole process was honestly dumb, I almost just told her to keep the stuff and wanted to walk away. I love our neighborhood Safeway! They have everything I need! Yes, they are pricey but if you're needing something right away, just come here and they'll have it for sure. I'm used to shopping in Safeway back in the mainland cause they are everywhere and they are huge! I wish our Safeway here is bigger. The only downside, they always seem to run out of carts. Like one time, I had to stalk this lady all the way to her car just to get the cart when she was done. And i told the cashier about it and she said that they had just ordered 200 carts last December and now they're all gone. Go figure. I love $5 Fridays here, it does get a bit packed but the deals are worth it if you find them. They're vegetables are always looking plump and fresh. They have wonderful fruits. And their bakery section, oh so yummy cakes and pastries! On Fridays, you can get a dozen bagels or donuts for only $5! I also get some flowers here every now and then cause on Fridays, it's just $5 for a bouquet. I also love their poke station, in my opinion, they have the best salmon poke. It's my absolute favorite. Their soup station is also so good, my favorite is the tomato soup. Yum! You should also try their salt and vinegar wings, and the jojos! Really crispy and such good flavor! Also the cashiers here are very very thoughtful, they always address you with your last name which i think is sweet. This was my last resort. I had gone to multiple grocery stores between Kalihi and Aiea searching for this one item that I needed to bake my double mocha cappuccino chocolate cake. I was losing hope. So, before I drove out to this location, I called to check if they had it in stock. In hindsight, I probably should have done that for all of the places I visited before driving all around the creation LoL Anyway, they had it! This review is for the awesome customer service I received over the phone and also while I was in the store picking up my ingredient. First, there was an automated message that picked up and I was already thinking, "oh, no, this is going to take forever!" However, once I passed the list of different options and selected one of them, I was directed to the right department and, to my surprise, was met right away with an actual human voice. I've called other grocery stores in the past and was put on hold forever, so it caught me off guard a little bit to be connected to a worker so quickly. Next, I told the guy what I needed. He put me on hold, for only a brief moment, to go check on it. He came back on the line like two minutes later. In my head, I was thinking, "this guy never even check!" But, he said the item that I was looking for was in stock and he went even further by telling me exactly how many was on the shelf. He was fast, efficient and friendly. I asked him to put it on hold for me and told him I'd be there in about 15 minutes. Then, I arrived at the store. The guy on the phone said he'd leave it with customer service and I could just pick it up there. So, I walked all around the store trying to find the customer service desk, but with no luck. I must've looked like a lost puppy because a worker asked me if I needed some help and my husband (who came in with me) explained to him that I had called earlier and placed an item on hold. The worker immediately remembered me and knew exactly what it was that I needed because he identified himself as the person whom I spoke to earlier and he was the one to personally pull it from the shelf. He offered to get my item from the customer service area and conveniently delivered it to me right at the register. This guy was awesome! I wish I could remember his name, but I'm pretty sure his tag said "manager." If not, Safeway should promote him because he provided some damn good customer service tonight! LoL The only thing preventing me from giving this review a 5-star rating is that it was difficult to find the customer service area. Maybe a sign would help? This means no more trips to dirty foodland , Safeway is always clean, the staff is friendly and attentive and always makes sure the meat is cut the way I ask. I never have to double check to make sure they peeled back the paper from around the meat. You don't know how many times I left foodland to have a 15 dollar back of meat with plastic still attached to my food. Safeway isn't my go to shopping spot just because there are cheaper spots with all the same items but no one has the deli selection they do. And I recently found out that if they're out of something that was on the $5 deals, you can pick up a rain check at the register! Whoohoo! The only reason I would give this place 3 stars is because when you actually need help finding something, there's rarely anyone around to help you! :/ Nonetheless, still super awesome app and they have so many things on sale allll the time! 07/08/20: *This review is solely for the DMV KIOSK* -- how convenient is this?! I don't think this is new by any means but today was the first time we tried it. At the time of payment, this kiosk was not accepting cash. Credit / debit card only. The instructions are pretty straightforward, you need either your car registration renewal letter or your car license plate + driver's license number to start. The entire process took less than 5 mins. read more
