My first time stopping by this establishment and I'm very disappointed in the quality of the food. Tri-Tip was clearly not done and the Ribs were tasteless. I ended up throwing everything in the trash just a waste. I paid $26 and I even tipped. Got Home ready to eat with my family. Ran into this nightmare. I will definitely not be returning friendly server but food is horrible. I definitely know my bbq and this was not it . I will continue to travel outside of Sacramento to get my bbq fix cause this wasn't it. Thanks but no thank you. Definitely not worth 5 star review like most of the ones I saw on Yelp that compelled me to stop by and give it a try . I had the three meat combo (chicken, ribs and brisket) and the brisket by far was my favourite. The BBQ sauce, baked beans, and potato salad were fantastic. Friendly staff, plenty of parking. When I crave bbq brisket, I will come back to Hickory Hanks. read more

Hickory Hank's is a local catering business that opens their walk-up style window to the public every Friday evening. Have wanted to try this "hidden local gem" for some time now. We ordered a bit of everything. THE PROS: First-off, it's a pretty good value. We got a combo that had beans, JoJos, Chicken, ribs, tri-tip, hot links and garlic bread. We added a 1/2 lb each of pulled pork and brisket. All total about $30. The house made BBQ sauce was tangy, but not sweet. I really liked that none of the meats came covered in sauce. The beans were mild and gentle in flavor. Not sticky-sweet like something from a can. THE CONS: For us, there was a bit of hit-and-miss with the meats. The food is not pretty to look at. The tri-tip and brisket were just average, perhaps a bit overdone. Virtually no pink at all. The garlic bread was light on garlic and not at all soft or buttery. Dry, hard and crunchy is how I would describe it. The chicken was moist, but my wife and I differed on if it had any real flavor. BOTTOM LINE: Overall not bad, but not outstanding either. The ribs and the hot-links were by far the best flavors and tenderest meats. The brisket and pulled pork really showcased the smoke. The JoJos were tasty. The tri-tip and brisket will probably be better as a sandwich, and may benefit from some sauce. I really want to support the local people and businesses in our town, and I don't have any problem going again. I think most people will think the food is fine, but I can't really say that it was unique or outstanding. read more

The Family #1 - A BBQ Smorgasbord...or is it? The Meats - 1/2 rack of Spare Ribs, a Whole Chicken, Tri Tip and Hot Links. The aroma from the back seat had my mouth watering as I drove my bounty home. And it didn't disappoint as I cracked each container open. They all were tender and juicy and made my tummy happy. (The Tri Tip could have been rarer for me but if you like yours on the medium side with a hint of pink this Tip's for you.) My faves: the Links which were spicy but not overly so and the Ribs that practically fell off the bone and weren't drowning in sauce! The Sides - Beans, Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Mac and Cheese and Garlic Bread. The Beans were probably the best of the bunch and that's not saying much. The Potato Salad and Coleslaw both lacked something (taste) so were just MEH. They were running out of Coleslaw so I got a Mac and Cheese instead. But I think they ran out of Cheese too because cheesy it was not. The Garlic Bread was not garlicky either but at least still edible. Not my fave: The Mac and (a little) Cheese. When the lid came off I saw nothing but creamy goodness. The first bite had me looking for that emergency blue box in the pantry. Enough said. I'll definitely be back when I'm in need of a Link and Rib fix. Although, next time I'll go with the Meat by the pound and skip the sides! read more

Hank knows his bbq!!! We booked Hank for our wedding 9.19.21 and everything turned out delicious. We went to the hickory hanks location first for the tasting and he greeted us with a monstrous platter of BBQ that could've fed 4-5 people. He won us over with the pulled pork, brisket, famous sausages stuffed with cheese and his hospitality. He also has a wide variety of sides including grilled corn, grilled veggies, fruits, etc for people who wants to include more health to their BBQ. When our wedding was approaching Hank came out to our house a few days beforehand to check on the space for his bbq truck and buffet set up. On the big day his team showed up and cooked a feast for us! We requested for the mac and cheese to be extra cheesy and Hank delivered! It was probably one of the crowd favs. Everyone loved the food and were asking for leftovers to bring home! Some of them even wants Hank to cater their next events. I tried the barbecue chicken and it tasted as if it was baked in the oven and then barbecue sauce placed on top of it. The brisket, however, smelled smoky and tasted incredibly smoky with a nice hickory flavor. It is only open on Fridays which sucks. Most of the food I would not eat because I don't eat pork however, the food that I could eat was all right but I have to say the brisket was really good. The parking is really comfortable and they have a garden out there. There is no inside seating to eat, just some tables on the outside. On nice days it is very nice to be there. Service was good although extremely slow. I tried to go back, but it is not convenient to only be open on Fridays and if I'm not on that side of town then it's a No go. read more

The tiniest container of BBQ beans and a little bigger container of potato salad and a totally saturated greasy garlic roll. This cannot possibly be the Hickory Hanks from long ago. Some of the best fresh BBQ in town. Authentic and made to order. First had this catered at a wedding at Gibson Ranch. I was really impressed and couldn't stop raving about the flavor then. Finally giving their location off Elkhorn boulevard a visit and it's super convenient. Parking is a breeze and there's ton of it too. A few tables to sit and enjoy the country music playing. The guys working the window are helpful and friendly. Can't miss the big sign with B-A-R-B-Q written on it neither lol. Try the hot links! The tri tip is killer too. Purchased 2 pounds of brisket on 4/1/22. There was so much fat throughout the meat the consistency was like chewing putty. The smoke flavor was too strong and overwhelming my wife and friends suspect they used liquid smoke. The BBQ sauce was too vinegary. The vinegar tang was way too strong. Beans were tough and under cooked. I gave my brisket to my friend who is a culinary chef that recommended the place. He was embarrassed he mentioned the place and swears it used to be better. I ate here for the first time today and it was amazing! It's a great setup for eating outdoors or taking to go. The meals are reasonably priced and the portions were huge! I got the tritip and ribs combo and my son got the chicken and tritip combo. Both were great! There were alot of sides to choose from so I can't wait to go back and try something different.
