I always will have a weakness for BBQ. So after seeing a few positive reviews on this establishment I decided to see what they were about while in town. Well here goes my review. Service: Surprisingly quick. There were 4 ladies behind the counter and they seem to work well with each other and patiently with each customer. They were on the same page far as assisting one another and explaining to each customer what their options were. Cleanliness: There were flies in the area/window next to where you order your food. I didnt see any in the food prep area thankfully. The dining area was clean for the most part. I don't think anyone really was double checking the area as customers came and went but I wasn't there long enough to see first hand. The trash wasn't over flowing but the trays were plied up in the tray holding area. The men's bathroom wasn't too well up kept either. Food: I ordered the three meat platter. I wanted turkey, sausage and ribs but I was informed that the turkey was going to be cold so I went with brisket. My sides were potato salad and beans. Everything including a drink cost $23 all together. More on that after I explain the taste of everything. All of the meats were on the luke warm to cold side. The sausage was cold but tasted good but I think that was due to the spices used to make/mix with but not from the grilling/smoking to cook it. The brisket was cold and flavorless. Think fully the sauce provided assisted in giving it the some needed flavor. The ribs weren't overly meaty but had a nice smoke ring to them and they tasted good. The potatoe salad was okay and the beans were probably the hottest thing on my plate but tasted good. And I had me a cup of the diabetes (really really sweet tea) to go with BBQ, which I really enjoy. Final thoughts: I've paid around $20 for a three meat plate of good BBQ and went back again and again. But there was never an issue with any of the items on my plate, everything was hot that needed to be or cold. I love to bbq/smoke/grill at home and when I decide to pay for it I expect for it to have some type of taste/flavor to it from whatever wood of choice is used, i shouldn't need sauce to flavor my food. I think the ribs was the only thing I didn't need to put sauce on. Maybe I caught them at a bad time or maybe they have lost their flare. Grabbed a chopped beef sandwich from the drive thru. It was the nastiest BBQ sandwich I've ever had. The bun was saturated with a sweet, thick BBQ sauce. I couldn't even taste the beef, (that's suppose to make Hickory Stick #1) there was so much BBQ sauce mixed in it! My sandwich was ruined because it was overpowered by sauce. A waste of $6.00. Paid close to $25 for the brisket, was a mound of Arby's quality, thin sliced sandwich meat, it was dry and kinda flavorless. So the brisket was disappointing especially for the cost. Also got the 2 meat combo, the sausage and ribs was good and the 2 sides potato salad/beans was pretty good. Hate to be rude since it's family owned but I gotta be real, that brisket wasn't it coach. Well, everyone's taste is different. I love sweets but, I didn't care for the sweetness in the beans and coleslaw. +_+ I like BBQ ribs but, I didn't like the vinegar based BBQ sauce. -_-'' I like salt on my popcorn but, I didn't like super salty sausages. T_T I will not compare this BBQ place to any other places but, based on the taste and quality, the price is a little steep. However, I did like their sliced pork, I think it was okay for me. Also, I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. :") And, that's it! lol ^__^ Ah, I bought a slice of pecan pie and it's still in the fridge so, I have no comment for the pie. lol read more

I don't know where or how the owner manages to find, keep and encourage the staff at the Hickory Stick but this place is one of the finest examples of how to serve customers I have ever seen. The ladies at the Hickory Stick are just fantastic. Now to the food. I can personally recommend the turkey po boy. It is just fantastic. The ribs are great and so is the chicken. Real BBQ here too... not just a joint with a electric cooker in the back. If your a bbq lover like me... put the Hickory Stick on your bucket list... it's very good. The Ribs were great, fall off the bone and tender! The sliced beef, also perfect. The BBQ was sweet and tangy - very verrrry good stuff! I thoroughly enjoyed the potato salad, plenty of flavor. My friend had the beans and the lemon pie which were amazing! I should have opted for those!! The lemon pie was like key lime - it was so awesome! Coleslaw was typical - good though. I have been eating at Hickory Stick for over 30 years. I now live in Houston and stop in every trip I make to Shreveport. The chopped beef sandwich is the best out there, and I recommend getting the sauce on the side, the sweet hickory smoke flavor is more than enough. This is not a huge menu BBQ restaurant. Beef, chicken, ribs, links and other sandwich meats. The beans are to die for, for anyone who remembers Hamels, they did the beans for them years ago. In fact, my dad, Alvin Gore was a very close friend and fishing buddy of the late owner, Mr Barry Petree. His wife, who now runs it, is just as sweet as can be along with the staff, who have worked together for many years. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu here. Okay, the Hickory Stick is a wonderful place to get good Southern barbecue. I had driven by the restaurant couple of times and seen the reviews on yelp and decided I had to try it. The staff at the Hickory Stick is extremely friendly and wonderfully helpful. The barbecue sausage is to die for and the Texas toast slathered in butter is perfect for the sliced BBQ beef. For my last meal in Shreveport, my brother brought me to Hickory Stick, because we're both blobs of men that are fond of barbecue. Spatially, not being from the area, I have no idea if this is a good part of town or what, but all I know is that it looked like a re-purposed fast food joint turned into a barbecue restaurant. But all hesitations are put aside when you walk into the place, and are greeted with the aroma of cooked animal fat mixed with smoke. It's a pretty cut and dry experience; you pick what you want in terms of meats, and if you want sides or not and then pay at the counter. You then take your food to one of the fairly generous amount of seating and enjoy your meal. Fountain drinks are available, and the refills are thankfully free because I tend to demerit any place that's stingy with refills. Because I was going yolo-swag all-in with my last meal, I went with a three-meat plate, because I wanted to sample three meats instead of being health-conscious or conservative and going with like just pulled pork or ribs. Instead, I went full-stupid and got ribs, beef brisket and sausages. Served with beans, cornbread and potato salad. With the drink, it rings up a little over $20, which is a little more than I'd spend on myself for dinner, but again, tourist. As the smell walking into the establishment would indicate, everything has a good smoky flavor. The ribs fall off the bone pretty easily, and it's tender without being mushy. The house sauces didn't really taste genuinely unique, and I'm guessing it's a fairly generic recipe with one or two spices added to make it "unique," but it wasn't bad, but it wasn't noticeably great. Honestly, between the three meats I had, I think I had to favor the beef brisket above the ribs and sausage. Everything in general was good, but I wouldn't say great. Four stars is pretty succinct at describing my personal experience; the location seemed pretty convenient, the establishment itself was comfortable and welcoming, and the food was definitely above-average in a grand spectrum of barbecue restaurants. I paid a little high, but it's also because I ordered a ridiculous amount of food. After I eventually sample a good variety of food that Shreveport has to offer, I could see myself coming back here again pretty easily. read more

I have been enjoying BBQ from Hickory Stick, since 1985, it's is in my opinion the best BBQ, in Shreveport-Bossier, the staff is excellent, the owners are friendly, and the food is great. The phrase good mood food gets thrown around a lot, however, this is the home of good mood food, if ever I am away for long periods of time, this is the first place I go when I get back into the S'port City, love those ribs. read more
