Hands down, best Sloppy Joe Sandwiches anywhere! On a recent trip back to NJ where I grew up, Hickory Tree was my number one choice for lunch. You see, outside of NJ, Sloppy Joe's (meat+Swiss+coleslaw+Russian Dressing) do not exist! It's sadly true. When you mention a Sloppy Joe, they think ground beef cooked in tomato sauce on a hamburger bun. You can't even buy Russian Dressing in the supermarket. So when I come "home" for a visit, I have to have a Sloppy Joe from Hickory Tree, a busy, bustling NY type of deli with lots of Italian offerings as well as these iconic sandwiches. So many memories this sandwich conjures up. Whenever my parents, and then me and my friends, hosted a party, we would order a platter of Turkey and a platter of Roast Beef Joe's. For any occasion, a platter of Sloppy Joe's was on the buffet. Each triple decker sandwich was cut into 6 pieces with a toothpick holding the goodness together. Never were there leftovers! If you order a sandwich, it's triple bread and cut in thirds. Definitely enough to share or save a third for the next day. My preference is the Turkey Joe and I like to get one from the case, where dozens of sandwiches are made every morning, stored, then sold completely during the lunch hour madness. Hickory Tree uses top quality meat and cheese and you can taste the difference. Since the sandwiches have been sitting, the flavors meld together and from the first bite, it's pure deliciousness! Russian dressing spilling out of the sandwich onto the wax paper, waiting to be sopped up with the bread. Have tried making them in Portland, OR, where I now live and my friends love my version, but they have never had the real deal. When I host parties, I ask one of our two Jewish Deli's to make a platter. They have never heard of them, but follow my direction and they are good. But no where near as good as those from Hickory Tree. On the last visit, my friend and I enjoyed our sandwiches with Joe's half and half iced tea and lemonade, zero calories. Killer! We sat outside enjoying the sunshine, catching up for five hours! I even told the owner how much these sandwiches mean to me, the memories they evoke. Sad to say that our favorite go to deli has disappointed once again. Scanty meat, orders on line incorrect, this is just not the same quality we have come to know and love. The owner says that quality control has not changed and they weigh the meat on sandwiches but I think the scale is off. Seeking new lunch spot. Update: the owner refunded our last order. I appreciate that attention to customer service. The cubano panini is the only thing that seems to remain the same. Thanks to Yelp I found this welcoming Deli in Chatham. They are in a the light tan strip mall on the northern most side of Shunpike Road. (GPS was confused). The pace inside is sort of what you find in a NYC deli, busy and several people behind the counter all looking to see who they may greet and help next. The front of the deli has drinks, snacks, pasta, cookies, small but unique. I found some honey filled candies imported from Italy there. The menu on the wall may be hard to read, but they have paper take out menus and its the same. I really wanted to try everything, but over three visits I ordered the same sandwich: Turkey Off The Bone, Bacon, Tomato, Avocado, Red Onion, Gruyere Cheese, Horseradish Sauce on a Ciabatta Roll ..Panini style. It tastes fresh, nothing was salty or weird. Each time I ordered the sandwich, I had some variations each time. I had a different type roll the first time. A softer/fluffier roll the second. A thinner crispier roll the third. First time was good, all ingredients plentiful. Second time very plentiful ingredients. Third time had slivers of avocado, not as much bacon, but still carried the same taste of the first two times. Loved this sandwich and I will now miss this spot, as my recent job project is now ending. I love supporting businesses such as this instead of chain places which I will always avoid whenever possible. My panini was also wrapped in a foil type wrapper which kept it warm even after 45 minutes until I was able to eat it (third visit). read more

We used Hickory Tree for a business event today. John delivered bagels, muffins and a fruit bowl to the venue for breakfast and for lunch, we picked up. They would have delivered but it worked best for us logistically to pick up. We had a tray of assorted sloppy joe's and a tray of assorted wraps and sandwiches as well as orzo and spinach salad and a mixed salad. Everyone loved the lunch. The sloppy joes are so delicious and we were really impressed that they included chicken breast sandwiches as well as vegetarian options...not just standard lunchmeat sandwiches. Well if you read my reviews then you know I'm a sucker for a sandwich. When people ask me my last meal, I say it's a tie between a fat ass burrito smothered in Hatch's green chile and a fat ass sandwich smothered in cheese and anything else that a sandwich can have on it. Enter in Hickory Tree. My man's hometown deli. His mom used to buys us these all the time, till we had to have a little sit down and I explained that sloppy joes don't do wonders for my waist line. Sometimes you have to splurge. Enter in this Italianesque pantry convenience store. With pastas, dinners, and some dry/canned/packaged goods that you can pick up while you are at the deli. Enter this fantastic deli filled with meats, cheeses, homemade salads, slaws and gdknowswhatelse. I order the Hickory burrito with turkey bacon (twas bfast time). Whole wheat wrap, egg whites, smothered in the melty cheddar cheese that was just everywhere with of course the added turkey bacon. Amazing. The boys I were with thoroughly enjoyed their t-ham and egg sandwiches. Well now, let us talk about lunch that day. We took home a Joe with us. Ham, swiss, russian dressing and slaw on rye. It was huge, cut into three (thank you for that) and was amazing. It was dressed perfectly for our lunch date. Fully clothed with the mayoey dressing with extra left on the parchment paper to scrap up with the sandwich but, not so much where it was all dressing. You can tell this is a family joint too which is always nice. I like it when my man says he knows the dude makin' my sammy and that we are supportin' him. So, Steph, why not the five star review? I've lived just down the road from this place for almost 20 years, and have had sandwiches from here at least 20 - 30 times a year. Unfortunately, things have slid downhill since the pandemic. Ordered a chicken steak sandwich, which has always in the past come loaded with chicken, pepper, onion, and fresh moz. What I got instead was something akin to a "Steak-em" that you would buy from the grocery store frozen food section - i.e., not chicken (some sort of steak product), not a lot else (minimal pepper and onion), and most definitely not fresh moz (some sort of liquid cheese product). I am going to temporarily give this place five stars, becauswe I think I will like it. I had the good fortune to receive a $10 gift certificate as a new resident of Madison, and went there this morning. I had the "Hickory Burrito" for $7 which was a burrito with eggs, onions, cheese , and chili. The chile overwhelmed the wrap. I was not able to taste anything else. There was nothing about this that would bring me back. BUT....the rest of the restaurant seems great...from homemade roast beef to homemade salads, I will try again. I went here for the first time today because I heard it was a good deli. Sadly, I was totally disappointed. I ordered the grilled chicken panini with broccoli rabe and fresh mozzarella. It was served on a sopping wet soggy roll. The chicken was inedible. It tasted like flavorless rubber, and the mozzarella & broccoli rabe also had no taste. It was as if someone threw the sandwich into a bowl of water before wrapping it up. I had to throw it out. My husbands fish sandwich was also soggy and the fish was really fishy tasting & served cold. My daughters plain Turkey and cheese on a roll was the only edible sandwich. I also got milk and a small ice cream pint. The bill was nearly $50. I called and asked if I could please be refunded and the owner said he can't refund my card, but will reimburse me for the bad sandwich if I come back in. I'm 8 months pregnant and in graduate school with a toddler - I have no time to come in this week or next. They should've easily been able to refund me. I am really upset about this experience. If you're reading this, and you think a Sloppy Joe is some Manwich concoction with ground beef and generic red sauce on a hamburger bun, get yourself to Jersey, NOW. A real Sloppy Joe is none of these things. A Jersey Sloppy Joe is a triple decker sandwich with deli meat, swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing on rye. It is awesome, and the best around this part of the state is at Hickory Tree. I've been coming here for a very long time. Back in my caddying days during the summer in high school and college we would often stop here for breakfast. Not only are they home to the best sloppy joes anywhere, but this is also where I was introduced to the wonder that is the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Now I usually only make it over here for lunch every now and then. But when I do, there is only one option, the Turkey Joe. They pre-make the sandwiches in the morning because so many people order them and they take some additional time to make. If you haven't been here before, do not worry about this. I can't explain it but I think the sandwich is even better when it sits in the fridge for a while. Also, side note, this is the best cole slaw I have ever had. If nothing else, come to this deli for the cole slaw. If for some strange reason you mouth is not already drooling over the sloppy joe, show up anyway. This is definitely one of the better delis in Chatham, if not in the surrounding area. It can be a bit pricey at times but as they say "you get what you pay for". All the food is great with a nice variety of soups each day. The breakfast sandwiches are very good on the large rolls and I recommend including the thick slices of taylor ham to your egg and cheese. But I think their best sandwiches are the pre-made turkey joe's which are served on three pieces of rye bread and packed with turkey, russian, dressing, and cole slaw. In addition to the quality of food, the quality of service is very high as well. They always have the right number of people working based on the time of day, even during the lunch time rush you can be in and out of there in about 5 minutes. Extensive menu of basic and special sandwiches. 3 stars for two reasons. There is only one option for sandwich sizes. Younger kids don't eat a large sandwich (actually neither do I for lunch) but I am forced to buy a large $7.00+ sandwich for them which isn't cost-effective for families. Also a star taken off for their gluten free options. They are trying which is great to see and I thought it might be a good alternative to the other gluten free deli in town, but it's not. They only have gluten free bagels (which did not look good) and white bread; so my sandwich was tiny and basically fell apart with one bite and I had to use a fork to eat it. Gluten free white bread can't support a deli sandwich, so I'm back to the other deli. So to sum it up, decent fresh sandwiches that are large but expensive,with poorly executed gluten free options. Bacon egg and cheese on a everything bagel - the bacon was just average and he sandwich overall was okay Turkey cranberry panini - this was really good and I would recommend. The only stumble (and it's a common one in the area) is that they don't slice the rye for their sloppy joes on a meat slicer, so it's about 1/3 too thick-making the sandwich too much of a mouthful. Using the presliced rye takes away from a great sloppy joe. I usually try to pair a stop here with a visit to the nearby Green Village Packing abbatoir (check their retail hours though). Really like their sloppy Joe's. Not very happy with a recent experience, however. I have been a long-time customer of this deli. I called ahead to order a sandwich. When I arrived at the deli, I stood near the register to pick up my order when I was reprimanded by a young man who told me there's one line for everybody. Seems to me it would make more sense to have a separate line for phone orders instead of one line with other people waiting to have sandwiches made. I've had sandwiches from here before, albeit years ago. I got the Turkey Sloppy Joe and a side of slaw. The sandwich had plenty of meat, but was lackluster, far from what I remembered. The bread didn't cut it. The dressing and slaw below par. The side of slaw didn't taste fresh, and had a bitter aftertaste. I've heard other sandwiches in here are really good, I'll give it another try, but I'll stay away from the sloppy Joe. read more

More than just a great spot for sandwiches. They have home cooked dinners either in the fridge or frozen for you. Simply throw them in the oven and you are eating a home cooked meal for two in an hour for about 10 bucks each.
