    Turkey Sloppy Joe!! The best.
    Kim G.

Hands down, best Sloppy Joe Sandwiches anywhere! On a recent trip back to NJ where I grew up, Hickory Tree was my number one choice for lunch. You see, outside of NJ, Sloppy Joe's (meat+Swiss+coleslaw+Russian Dressing) do not exist! It's sadly true. When you mention a Sloppy Joe, they think ground beef cooked in tomato sauce on a hamburger bun. You can't even buy Russian Dressing in the supermarket. So when I come "home" for a visit, I have to have a Sloppy Joe from Hickory Tree, a busy, bustling NY type of deli with lots of Italian offerings as well as these iconic sandwiches. So many memories this sandwich conjures up. Whenever my parents, and then me and my friends, hosted a party, we would order a platter of Turkey and a platter of Roast Beef Joe's. For any occasion, a platter of Sloppy Joe's was on the buffet. Each triple decker sandwich was cut into 6 pieces with a toothpick holding the goodness together. Never were there leftovers! If you order a sandwich, it's triple bread and cut in thirds. Definitely enough to share or save a third for the next day. My preference is the Turkey Joe and I like to get one from the case, where dozens of sandwiches are made every morning, stored, then sold completely during the lunch hour madness. Hickory Tree uses top quality meat and cheese and you can taste the difference. Since the sandwiches have been sitting, the flavors meld together and from the first bite, it's pure deliciousness! Russian dressing spilling out of the sandwich onto the wax paper, waiting to be sopped up with the bread. Have tried making them in Portland, OR, where I now live and my friends love my version, but they have never had the real deal. When I host parties, I ask one of our two Jewish Deli's to make a platter. They have never heard of them, but follow my direction and they are good. But no where near as good as those from Hickory Tree. On the last visit, my friend and I enjoyed our sandwiches with Joe's half and half iced tea and lemonade, zero calories. Killer! We sat outside enjoying the sunshine, catching up for five hours! I even told the owner how much these sandwiches mean to me, the memories they evoke. If you live in NJ or you are visiting, I highly recommend getting a Sloppy Joe from Hickory Tree. You will thank me!

Bangin sloppy joe sammys!! Pastrami Joe we got was amazing. Perfect amount of dressing to meat to bread ratio. If it wasn't so far from us we would eat there once a week. Great nearby park to have your lunch at too. Our pro tip is grab a side of fries from the pizzeria next door. They don't sell any here.

Thanks to Yelp I found this welcoming Deli in Chatham. They are in a the light tan strip mall on the northern most side of Shunpike Road. (GPS was confused). The pace inside is sort of what you find in a NYC deli, busy and several people behind the counter all looking to see who they may greet and help next. The front of the deli has drinks, snacks, pasta, cookies, small but unique. I found some honey filled candies imported from Italy there. The menu on the wall may be hard to read, but they have paper take out menus and its the same. I really wanted to try everything, but over three visits I ordered the same sandwich: Turkey Off The Bone, Bacon, Tomato, Avocado, Red Onion, Gruyere Cheese, Horseradish Sauce on a Ciabatta Roll ..Panini style. It tastes fresh, nothing was salty or weird. Each time I ordered the sandwich, I had some variations each time. I had a different type roll the first time. A softer/fluffier roll the second. A thinner crispier roll the third. First time was good, all ingredients plentiful. Second time very plentiful ingredients. Third time had slivers of avocado, not as much bacon, but still carried the same taste of the first two times. Loved this sandwich and I will now miss this spot, as my recent job project is now ending. I love supporting businesses such as this instead of chain places which I will always avoid whenever possible. My panini was also wrapped in a foil type wrapper which kept it warm even after 45 minutes until I was able to eat it (third visit).

Pandemic Roast Beef Joe. Does anyone see cheese on this?

What happened here? Plenty of meat behind the counter. Very little on your sandwich. Try again, boys and girls. I've been coming here since the 80s. Used to love it.

Local deli in Chatham in strip mall. No seating, only takeout. Expensive for sandwiches that are just ok. Roast beef was well done but not that tasty.

Decent deli but expensive as others have mentioned. A normal sized vegetarian sub will run you around $9. The bread was fine and fillings ok, unfortunately everything mushed together quickly. I liked my sub at Chatham Sandwich Shop better.

The menu has good selections of sandwiches, eggs, salads etc.,so indeed a perfect brunch place. I wasn't a fan of food though. We tried to call ahead however it was an ai service so was unable to make reservations or check the status of thy could accommodate our large group. We decided to take a chance. Note Online reservations does not apply to large groups. We arrived, lots of parking in an outdoor lot. Few Handicap Parking spots near the entrance. 1hr wait, no problem we just stroll around the shops nearby. Returned in 45mins and table was ready. Two sizable seating areas. Not stroller accessible. Stairs up to both seating areas. Bathrooms right by the front door of the host area. We were with a toddler actively in potty training. Be aware the toliet seats are elongated and doesn't fit most toddler seat covers. There is a changing station in one of the bathroom. Now to the food, having a sizable food menu and cafe menu got our group excited. They ordered the pistachio latte and nitro cold brew. Both were well received. The jam and butter board was ordered for starters. With such a large group we ordered a diverse array of items. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros (pictured included) MIL ordered the corn beef hash, partner ordered the hot honey chicken and waffles, BIL got the Rueben hash and we ordered chicken strips for our toddler (forgot what the others ordered) The food took about 45 mins. The food was overall bland and disappointing the chicken was incredibly dry and tough. Our toddler who is obsessed with chicken strips, spit it out. I tried it and it was hard to swallow. Even the server agreed it was dryer than usual. The waffles were bland and dry. The only flavoring came from the hot honey. The corn beef hash was over sweet potato home fries. The scrambled eggs were nicely prepared with their house hollandaise sauce (bland). The corn beef was pleasantly surprising. Normally I avoid corn beef due the salt content however this was not as salty as I expected. But than again bland. The Ruben was tiny. I thought it was for a child. The chicken and waffles came with 1 piece of chicken, 1/3 size of our toddlers chicken strips. We were surprised there was 3% dine in service fee. There was no indication on their website only a 3% credit card fee. I cannot recall the menu citing this in person dining fee. Meaning an extra 6% fee just for using your credit card and dining in. This is crazy. Otherwise the food was bland. Nothing stood out. Not even their butter and jam. You would come here for the ambience not the food. Environment is well lit with boathouse vibes. Good for girls cafe catchup. Side note, even though all the foods were underwhelming we only sent back the chicken tenders because they're inedible. Baby choked on it, grown cousin choked on it and I almost choked on a piece. They offered to remake the dish however it was too late, everyone else was done and we were going to take our chances again. Took too long to get help to recover the situation. The manager took off the $10 chicken strip meal. Ambience 4/5- bright boat house vibes Service 3/5 - understaffed, if you don't have the staff don't fill the tables. Be fair to the people you serve and your coworkers. We can tell our server is trying but the house wasn't helping Food 1/5- bland Quantity 1/5 - adult meals were smaller than kids meals Quality 2/5- looks better than it tastes. Advertised uses quality ingredients however unsure how to execute. Wished they pay more attention to the flavor instead of the aesthetics. Suggestions: Move the food faster instead of leaving it under the warming lights prevent drying out the food. Add a little salt to Huevos Rancheros as well as switch up the tomatoes, the tomato's were dull and did not brighten the dish, also with the flatness it just added to the bland flavor. Increased the portion sizes for the meals or decrease the charge. From what I gathered seeing other tables the kids meals were all larger than the adult meals. The "Brussels waffle" was missing something, maybe milk? It was extremely dense and heavy unlike the characteristics of a light and airy waffle with crisp edges (could also be sitting under the warmer too long as well). I might be hyper critical of this eatery due to their excessive fees and lack of meeting expectations from menu descriptions. I would understand if it was 1 or 2 dishes were mediocre, however with overwhelming consensus of the 9 dish selections were described to be savorless, it needs to be called out.

On Sunday 4/15/2026 I placed an online order via their own site at 3pm for a pickup time at 4:30 (for reference they close at 7pm) my card was charged over $50. I arrived at 4:22 to discover a poorly handwritten and placed sign on the door under the store hours (making it hard to read) saying they are closing at 4pm. I received a phone call that didn't display the business name and when you cross reference it doesn't show any association with the business from Chatham NJ (they are located in New Providence). They left no message so giving zero indication it was even from them, (technically I still didn't know if it was I'm just being charitable) and to make matters worse the call was made after the business was already closed for that day making it useless to me. I don't care for excuses they'll render under this comment if they ever see this to attempt to make themselves look better, I have all the proof and evidence like I said either theft of services maliciously or through incompetence, nevertheless stay away from them. I will never patronize them again and strongly urge anyone coming across this to do the same.
