I had another good experience here, short wait times, helpful and friendly staff, good food!

    Quesabirria tacos.

We stopped into the Ankeny location yesterday for lunch. It's been a few months since I noticed a few new items had been tagged on the Hildago menu. Two being birria and quesabirria tacos. The funny thing is the birria items are on the physical menu, but I can't find them on the online menus...? It was tough to pull away from my normal pollo Hidalgo but I managed to this time. I ordered the quesabirria tacos. They arrived quickly, just a few minutes after our cheese dip and drinks, along with our other items. How do Mexican restaurants do that? Stuff hits your table so fast you start to feel like they have a psychic and a Star Trek-like replicator back in the kitchen.... "Three quesabirtia tacos!" "Make it so Number One!" "Order up Captain!" I know Hidalgo like Monterrey has its fans and critics... Both Hidalgo locations have always treated us well, though service has had it's ups and downs, and the food it always solid. The quesabirria tacos came loaded with meat, a bowl of consume, and with sides of cilantro, onion, and hot sauce. I'm normally a truck guy when it comes to birria... I've had Flame's and Faustino's is still on my list... And these are good! It was nice to be able to lean in, there in an oversized booth, like you are pounding down a dipped Italian beef in Chicago! Elbows up like a prisoner protecting their tray of food. A good quesabirria taco is not for the faint of heart. If it's not messy you're not doing it right... The tacos themselves were probably more loaded with cheese and slow cooked beef than any others I've had in the metro. Well worth the $13.90 listed menu price. Are they my favorite? I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. Nina's, Tacqueria Marissa, Flame, Hidalgo, etc... They're all done well! It is what it is. If you like birria tacos don't sleep on these items. Give them a shot. https://hidalgomexicanbarandgrilliowa.com/

Ordered cheesesteak burritos (web-site price $13.99) and El Super Plato (web-site price $17.99) along with cheese dip (web-site price $4.99) total should have been $36.97 before tax and they charged me $51.98 total. When I questioned the cost, the employee danced around my questions and said maybe the website is wrong and he would have to get with his manager on that. mediocre food and they even forgot my salsa and beans and rice! Very poor service and hidden costs that could not be explained. Look at your bill closely when dining here.

So good! Party of 2, 5:20 on a Friday night. Busy place! Seating was quick, there's lots of space! It's bright, open and colorful. Margarita's are delicious, food was super fast, hot and full of flavor.

Stopped by on a Tuesday evening before the dinner rush. The inside looks nice. Lots of tv screens and looks like they got sports up on the tv. The staff was attentive and got us seated right away. They were not busy, so we didn't have to wait. We got chips and salsa right away. I hate to say it but the chips were stale. Chips are the opener to many Mexican restaurants and if they it sets a tone. If the chips aren't fresh, that thought lingers. The salsa was decent, but I didn't really want much to save room for my meal. Being with my hubby we sometimes get different meals but tonight we both landed on the Fajita burrito. I asked the waiter if he liked the chicken or the beef. He said both. I was feeling chicken and went that way. Hubby got a little inventive and asked for the carnitas in his Fajita burrito which was not mentioned on the menu but the waiter was happy to accommodate. The plates came out fast. There is a ton of food on these plates. My chicken was good. It had good flavor and I filled up. I tried of bite of the carnitas. The flavor was something to be desired. I felt like it was pulled pork with no flare. It tasted fine, but I think my hubby was disappointed. Overall, the service was good. The food was good, but I think I have other locations around town that I enjoy more.

Hidalgo is a restaurant our party often visits and is better than most Mexican restaurants. Tables were clean, there is nice decor, and there are lots of windows. Service speed was very high and we got our food a lot faster than expected, 10/10! The employees are always kind and funny. Waiter was very nice and helpful. Food is always great, flavors go nicely together, presentation always looks great, and generally the taste is always amazing! Looking forward to coming back to this establishment!

Ate here this evening based on a recommendation from a co-worker. Was not disappointed! The drinks were on point and my fajitas were very good with huge portions! Service was awesome, even though I ate in a busy bar area! The only slight (and reason for 4 stars) was based on the chips and salsa. The chips were thick and hard, while the salsa was very bland. No flavor in this part of the meal. The restaurant is very nice and much more than the usual hole-in-the-wall I like!

The happy house is amazing! Salsa and chips really good, HUGE portions and great music. Great service.

MY FAVE - oh my goodness, this restaurant alone changed me into a mexican cuisine lover. They're nachos are incredibly huge portions & wonderful for a table - their quesadillas are delicious & also giant. I also highly recommend their street tacos. Everything is well priced & the service is incredible. We got so personal with our server outside, he brought me a flower on my drink. It was the sweetest act & he told us all about his family & loving his job. That's right, he LOVES his work. That's the best sort of thing I can hear as a server myself. That's how you know the staff is treated well! The drinks are incredible, this is the only location I have found that makes the mojitos to perfection. My husband loves their margs & we always end our evening with a shot presented to the table. I have taken family & friends here & never had a bad experience. It's a gorgeous restaurant with incredible interior, incredible staff & amazing chips & salsa. We love Hidalgo & it's now one of my favorite places to go!! 11/10 recommend.

Extremely good experience. Beer was cold, service was fast. My only negative was the salsa was a little warm temp wise. I requested the hot salsa which was highlight of the meal. Absolute perfection. The queso was very thick, but very hot and tasty. I ordered the California burrito which was enough to feed 3 people for only $15. My GF loved the margarita. Very tasty.

Choripollo....enormous amounts of food for $13

This is a great place to have great food in Prairie Trail. The patio is fantastic! I've been here twice and have had fantastic food and service in an incredibly well kept place. I've had the choripollo and the steak quesadilla during my two visits. I recommend both dishes! The chips are fresh and the salsa is delicious! I don't remember which margarita I had but it was strong and delightful! I've tried going back additional times but the waits were longer than my tummy could handle.

The food outshined the service!…read more Ambiance: 4 stars Food: 5 stars Service: 2 stars Well, I came here with a friend for lunch. He loves the place and said the Gyros are fantastic. So I went with his recommendation. First impressions: The place is small and nicely located in the District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny. They have adequate seating and were only slightly busy when we arrived (I would say it was at half capacity the entire time we were there) We stood at the reception location for a while before we were 'greeted' and finally seated. We sat for quite a while before the guy with the headset to came back to take our orders. This was the weird part - he was fine, but he spoke so quietly we were not sure he was addressing us or talking to someone in his headset. Eventually we got our orders in, and we again waited. Some time later the water showed up, then after another pause the drinks we ordered were delivered, and sometime later the food showed up. He even remembered the dipping sauce which I thought I was going to have to ask for. We ate our entire meals without once being asked how things were, and eventually after the food was all gone, he came back to unceremoniously plop the bill on the table, and after another extended period he came back to process the payment. All-in-all the interaction with this guy was 'just weird'. (It was suggested that he might be the son of the owner...) He was doing his job but there was absolutely not any extra effort put in to make us feel welcome, and the total lack any real interaction was off-putting. The overall appearance of the place was nice and appeared clean, the decor was fresh and classy. However the bar area around the kitchen was very cluttered and looked like it was being used for overflow storage and it was a bit chaotic and had lots of clutter. Please forgive the fact that I forgot to take pictures of the delicious food. I got into conversation with my friend and just forgot! It was a very well made traditional Gyro with generous portions of meat, fresh hummus and a perfect portion of super fresh tzatziki sauce. I ordered fresh jalapeños and they got that right too! The side of fries were delicious as well, seasoned perfectly, crispy and fresh, and the garlic sauce...well did not lack for garlic! Wowza!! Overall I do recommend this place for the food! I will most likely return and I hope that the service will be a little better next time around.

The service was excellent--our waiter was kind, attentive, and made us feel well taken care of. I ordered the yakisoba bowl without any meat add-ins, and I'm so glad I did. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area. I definitely think it would be a great spot to watch any sporting event. I and my amazing woman ordered the Grilled Buffalo Chicken Cobb along with a half Very Berry Salad with added grilled chicken, and overall it was a satisfying, hearty meal. The Grilled Buffalo Chicken Cobb was the standout. The chicken was tender and well-cooked, topped with a bold buffalo sauce that added heat overpowering the dish (heh). The salad itself was generously portioned and visually appealing, loaded with fresh ingredients like cherry tomatoes, avocado slices, blue cheese crumbles, crispy bacon, hard-boiled egg, corn, carrots, and mixed greens. Every bite had a good balance of textures and flavors--creamy, crunchy, savory, and spicy. The Very Berry Salad (half portion) was fresh and light, making it a nice contrast to the Cobb. Adding grilled chicken made it more filling, though the upcharge felt a little steep for the portion size. Still, the greens and toppings were fresh and well-prepared. Service and presentation were solid, and the food arrived looking just as good as it tasted. One downside was the added 3% swipe/tap fee, which bumped the total up a bit, but the quality of the food helped justify the overall surprise. Overall: A flavorful, filling meal with fresh ingredients and strong presentation. A good choice if you're craving a substantial salad that doesn't feel boring and looking for a place to hide from a rain and talk to your loved one. (5/5)
