Friendly goats abound at the farm! They'll even teach you how to milk them!!
    Jillian R.

Went there for a farm tour and had a blast running around catching chickens, milking goats, learning about bee keeping, and petting ponies. The groupon said the tour was just supposed to be an hour.. but they were so cool with explaining whatever we wanted, and they even had space for a picnic afterward. Bring cash! They sell tanned rabbit hides (GORGEOUS) for $10 each, FRESH eggs for $5... and they'll let you pet their rabbits, chase the chickens, and cuddle with their goats. I was skeptical, but it's worth the scenic drive out.

Wow!! Now THIS is a top-notch Farmers Market (and I consider myself to be a Farmers Market…read moreconnoisseur). If you can get over the fact that parking is a nightmare (tip: get there early and use the free parking lot at the DMV) you'll love every second of your time here. We got there around 9:30am and were lucky enough to snag a spot at the aforementioned lot - about a 5 minute walk from the start of the market. From there, we took about 2 hours to fully explore, including a quick stop at a cute and affordably-priced vintage stop right off the vendors' booths. There is a huge variety of goods, mostly consumables with a few jewelry and handmade goods worked in. The vast majority of consumables booths had samples. I tried balsamic vinegars, loads of dips, some fresh fruit and tomatoes, bread, tempeh, you name it. I wasn't even hungry for lunch after going! If you aren't keen on samples, there are lots of prepared food booths for a full meal. Prices are reasonable. I bought a delicious Mediterranean 3 layer dip for $6 and my brother got a massive focaccia loaf for $10. The vendors were very friendly and helpful. Many (most?) also had business cards with shipping info if you're like me and have a full suitcase already. I would consider this market a must-visit if you find yourself in San Diego on a Sunday. Loved it!

[Parking]: Difficult parking situation, but I got really lucky and found a street parking spot near the intersection of Cleveland Ave and Richmond St at 9 AM. Apparently visitors can park for free at the DMV parking lot (3960 Normal St), but the lot fills up quickly so come early. According to the website, visitors can also park at the United States Postal Service parking lot at 3911 Cleveland Ave. [Amenities & vendors]: The farmers market does not accept EBT. The market takes up about three large blocks and visitors can find produce, gifts, arts and crafts, flowers, clothing, etc. Not many fruit stands offer samples, but other non-fruit food vendors do provide free samples. The market also has a solid food court including one vendor selling coconut pancakes (Coconut & Co. Thai Fusion). The coconut pancakes (aka khanom krok - $4 for 8 pieces) reminded me of the sticky rice from mango sticky rice and these pancakes were actually quite good. [Conclusion]: Our party only ended up staying for 30 minutes, but overall this is a great farmers market for anyone who's looking for solid one-stop food options and not necessarily looking for a produce-focused farmers market.

Every Friday and Saturday, Taj opens his farm stand to the public, and it's here that you will find freshest, most delicious organic produce you've ever purchased in your life. My wife and I stop by every Saturday morning to see what Taj has, and we're always amazed at the selection, which changes from week to week depending on what's ready for harvest. Yesterday, for example, we bought broccoli, carrots, celery, lettuce, spring onions, and edible (!!) flowers. Then, Taj told us to wait a minute. He went out to his gardens and harvested some sugar snap peas for us right then and there. Oh. My. God. The sweetest, most delicious snap peas I've ever eaten. We of course bought some of those too. And that's the real beauty of going to the farm stand yourself instead of just doing a CSA box. You get to interact with Taj. He'll tell you what he loves best at the moment, and introduce you to some things you might not have otherwise tried (hello, black radish!). You'll also find fresh eggs (we have our own chickens so I don't need to buy those), lemons, and a variety of other produce. Whatever's fresh. Whatever's delicious. And if you need more of something, Taj is more than happy to go out in the garden and pick it for you. Extra bonus: the prices are very reasonable. The farm stand is currently open only on Friday from 2:30 to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Check the website for updates or give Taj a call.

Just before we got to the freeway, we saw a hand painted sign on the side of the road introducing "El Campito Farm." Thank god that I hit the brakes to investigate them further. Their setup was as simple as can be. The entire operation consisted of a farmer, a few tables covered in burlap, and a respectable display of the freshest, grown on-site, organic vegetables that I have ever seen. We were on our way home to make fish tacos, but all we had was fish and tortillas. We had no fresh ingredients! But that's where Phillip(the farmer) and El Campito Farm stepped in. We picked through their selection and took a bunch of FRESH veggies home to complete our shopping list. They offered up all of the following in the middle of October: multi-colored beets, baby gourmet lettuce, fresh cilantro, green onions, fancy crimson forest onions, trumpet mushrooms, yellow squash, green squash, spherical squash, butternut squash, yellow carrots, etc... It is impressive for any local farm to produce all of these veggies simultaneously, but especially during October. What makes them my new favorite place to get produce, is that they grow sustainable food. El Campito Farm is organic, and they take it a step further. They have a philosophy that demands total respect for the Earth, their harvest, and ultimately, the families that rely on their fields for food. Most important question...How is their produce? It is superior to anything that I have ever purchased in a store. We used their onions, squash, cilantro, and mushrooms to prepare dinner tonight. My wife had to go lay down and relax after dinner. Why? Because the food was so good, that she had eaten the entire massive portion of food that I served her. The veggies were crisp, and maintained their distinct flavors like they should. Excellent! Think about it. El Campito Farm is producing high quality, locally grown, organic food for the community to enjoy. They are providing local jobs. And they are protecting the land by not abusing it. They love what they are doing and it shows. I will be back very soon. Until then, we will tell everyone about what you are doing out in the mountains of San Diego.

From delicious food, to fresh produce, to the most gorgeous and vibrant flowers, to beautiful pottery, to unique clothes... you name it, they have it there! They even have tables and chairs around for people to eat at. There's also a playground for families who have little ones! I could never go to a farmers' market and leave without fresh flowers, so of course I had to pick up some from Hidalgo Flowers. They always have the most colorful and stunning arrangements, and for a decent price too. This time, I got a bunch with the prettiest sunflowers. We also picked up the sweetest and reddest strawberries from this one vendor. I highly regret not getting their name, but I will definitely be on the hunt for them the minute we go back. We got a cup of strawberries with some dark chocolate sauce from Strawberries and Chocolate. That was sooo good! We devoured it so quickly, we didn't even get to take a picture of it. One of the standouts for me was the Pork Sisig Rice from Baryo Eats. It was AHHHHMAZING!! It's the best kind of pork sisig that I love to eat--the taste was so good and nostalgic, it took me back to my college days back in the Philippines! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We also got some Paella from Driana Catering/Taste of Spain. It was so flavorful and the rice was cooked to perfection. We were just sad they ran out of shrimp by the time we got some, so we were left with chicken only. We got some goodies from It's Cafe Thai as well--Milk Tea with Boba, Taro Thai Coffee, and the Mango Sticky Rice. All of them had just the right amount of sweetness and hit the spot for us. Lastly, we had some of the watermelon and the cucumber lemonade refreshers, and the chicken and pork tamales from Gourmet Tamales. They were so good, we even took some home for later!
