It's challenging enough for a quick workout, and it has enough routes to allow for short, medium and very long hikes. I start at the nature center and hike up to the park, then head back. I find the scenery just incredible. You get pretty good immersion in the hiking experience, despite being located right off a roadway (the entrance is, anyway).

Sure, housing encroached on the east and west flanks but the steep hills, ravines and canyon itself ensures you are immersed in nature with the façade only occasionally broken by a plane lifting off from the nearby air force base. Top reason to go? No crowds or kids. Seriously, I've seen people turn back after ascending the first hill, which comes almost immediately. Unfortunately, this didn't prevent graffiti schmucks from tagging rocks inside of 100 yards, something that happened between my third and fourth visits. You'll need a lot of water and a good wide brimmed hat because there's virtually no shade. Plus, a decent set of hiking boots is important. It's also possible to get lost so I recommend using the AllTrails app for the satellite views and topographical maps to see where the trails are. While fitness apps such as Strava are useful, you won't see the map as easily so running both makes sense. Sun block too, definitely need to reapply after 45 minutes to an hour. "Do what thou wilt": there are so many trails and possible loops just do what you want and have fun. The rattlesnakes are awake now so keep off the rocks on the hilltops, you'll likely see their trails in the dirt. There are tons of lizards too, all sizes and colors, plus hummingbirds, hawks, and ravens. We saw a raven pluck a small ground squirrel from some rocks by its tail and could hear its squeaks. Sad, but that's nature. You won't go as far as you think for the same output of energy as, say, Mt. Rubidoux. This is more rugged and rustic, hence fewer people and dogs. It's taken me four visits to exceed three miles that felt like six or seven. Nevertheless, it's a challenge and so picturesque. Next time I'm hoping ascend Rattlesnake Peak at 1608 feet, tucked dab smack in the middle of the wilderness. I typically use the Central entrance but there are others available, just use the app to locate them. I don't recommend being out there after noon on days over 80 degrees, either go early or after 5pm. If you go later bring a headlamp just in case you take longer getting back than expected. Not for the faint of heart, which is why it's becoming my top training ground for more difficult and longer hikes in the mountains.

We…read morestayed from Friday night to Sunday afternoon and booked 2 campsites and it was pretty spacious for us (for 7 people we could've done with just fine with 1). They have a shower and restrooms which was very nice and convenient: pretty clean when we first arrived but over the course of the weekend one of the toilets got clogged and some people would really take their time in the SINGLE COMMUNAL shower. There's a lake nearby with jet ski rentals a lots of families playing in the water which is really nice. I do agree with the other reviews that people don't really follow the nighttime curfew here. We heard people singing karaoke and being loud. Overall we had a nice experience! Despite the downsides we still had a fun time. I would consider coming back here if I were to go camping again.

The numerous issues we encountered demonstrate a lack of proper management, poor customer service, and unacceptable campground conditions. Upon our arrival, Joselyn Ortiz, who identified herself as the campground manager, informed us that our campsite reservation had been canceled. We never received any notification of the cancellation by email, phone, or mail. Furthermore, no documentation or proof of a refund or reimbursement was provided. This situation caused unnecessary stress and inconvenience after we had already traveled to the campground. In addition, the campground appeared to be overbooked and poorly managed. Throughout our stay, we experienced the following issues: Campgrounds appeared overcrowded, with campsites placed extremely close together, leaving little to no privacy. Excessive noise from loud parties continued without intervention. Park staff and rangers were not visibly present to enforce campground rules or maintain order. Dogs barked continuously, disturbing campers. Children were left unattended and entered other campers' sites without supervision. Restrooms were dirty and not maintained to an acceptable standard. Trash was scattered along the shoreline and beach areas, creating an unsanitary environment and negatively impacting the natural beauty of the park. Wildlife, including mice, raccoons, and squirrels, repeatedly accessed campers' food due to poor wildlife management. Flying cockroaches were present around the campground. Large numbers of bees were concentrated near the shoreline trees, creating potential safety concerns for visitors, especially those with allergies. These conditions did not meet the standards that visitors should reasonably expect from a California State Park. We paid for a safe, clean, and enjoyable camping experience but instead encountered poor management, inadequate maintenance, and insufficient enforcement of campground regulations.

It is pretty much an incline the whole way until the top, then we saw a Herd of donkeys. Spotted a few coyotes as well but they are harder to find. Not much shade so prepare water and hats. The area is really open and well kept, with plenty of space for walking, playing sports, or just hanging out. It's especially nice in the evenings when the weather cools down and people are out playing basketball, soccer, or just relaxing. There are a lot of courts and fields here, so it's perfect if you want to be active or bring friends for a game. I also like that there's plenty of parking and the park usually feels pretty clean and maintained. Overall it's one of the better parks in the Riverside area if you want somewhere with space and a good community vibe.

Shadow Mountain Park is such a wonderful community space. There's so much open, free space to play,…read morewalk, or just relax, and the park is always clean and well taken care of by the community. The playground is a huge win for kids; it has a zipline, several slides, and fun climbing structures that keep them entertained for a long time. We've also been here during softball/baseball games, and it's such a fun, festive environment with families cheering and enjoying the evening. One thing I will mention is that the park could definitely use more lighting at night when games aren't happening, especially during the parts of the year when the sun sets earlier. It can get a little too dark too fast. Overall, though, it's a great park for all ages and one of our favorite local spots!

There's a huge grassy space for soccer and baseball, and a hill if you have kids that enjoy rolling down them. They also have a large gazebo with limited table-benches. Great for hosting an outdoor party and dog-friendly too (they have trash for disposing doggy poop). Perfect for picnics if you bring your own EZ-Up or outdoor chairs. Note: it gets busy when there's a game here. They have some parking spaces within the park. And more along the neighborhood streets.
