My wife and I had dinner at The Hideaway tonight, and unfortunately it was not a good experience. I ordered a burger that was extremely sloppy, with juice running everywhere and soaking some of my fries until they were soggy. My wife ordered the beer-battered chicken fingers, which looked more like oversized sweet-and-sour chicken from a Chinese takeout place. They were overly oily, and not at all what we expected. The food also took quite a while to arrive, even though the restaurant didn't seem particularly busy. To top it off, soda was $3.50 with no free refills, which feels excessive given the overall quality of the meal. Service wasn't bad, but we left very disappointed and won't be returning. read more

Now I am a foodie and food snob of the highest order. I had the absolute BEST Pasta Penne with Vodka Sauce that I have ever eaten, hands down, no exceptions. The Chef/owner puts this dish together from scratch with unique ingredients that blows away anything I've ever had. My wife had the Teriyaki Stir Fried Shrimp that was absolutely excellent. Not what I would expect from a semi Italian restaurant. I saw addition food orders served around us of pizza, pastas and sandwiches, they all looked fantastic. We went here after church for breakfast/brunch. It's a place for locals - as in, lots of people seem to know one another. The weekend specials have $4 mimosas and bloody marys. Half of us had lunch and the other had breakfast. The Reuben was really good. Great bread and the filling had the perfect ratio of corned beef and coleslaw . My husband got the breakfast - eggs, sausage and toast. The home fries was a mash potato convocation with au jus, I believe. It's different than the usual home fries but it was equally tasty. This was a very nice restaurant to get a casual meal but it recently changed hands and it's gone down hill very quickly. We ordered our meal, my wife's meal came within a reasonable amount of time but mine arrived about 10-15 minutes later. The other tables that had been occupied were left with dirty dishes for as long as we were there. The food was so so but the service was poor. Not the greatest bar food. The burgers were so greasy I had to put a napkin on my plate so I could even put it down between bites. The sweet potato fries were skinny and burnt. The kids dishes were $12.50 which seemed high compared to other comparable restaurants. The server didn't seem happy with her life, she was attentive and the food came out in decent amount of time.. but there was zero friendliness or expression behind any of her interactions. This was the only restaurant open during Covid. They are also open 7 days a week and have a wide menu including local seafood, hamburgers and salads. We live in Old Lyme and go there often because it is reliable, friendly and has good comfort food as well as specials based on local produce/seafood. It is an older venue with a regular 'bar' crowd and local patronage. We don't hesitate to bring grand kids or great grand kids as well. The service is usually good but may be busy. read more

Super dated interior from the early '90s with terrible site lines to see a TV. Weirdly the place was like a morgue, very quiet. We ordered a couple of drinks and I was actually worried if the glasses would be clean. I saw people ordering oysters and I thought they must be nuts. Add in a bathroom with a toilet that looks like a bunch of young kids just used it and overall you have a small disaster. We go for lunch a few times in the Summer can't beat the specials for $10.50. I had the fish sandwich first time and burger the next time. Both include fries. We sit at the bar and the bartender is spot on. The rolls for the fish and burgers are huge and good. My wife generally gets the Summer salad with the ham, always a pleaser for her. $2.50 for a Pabst pint for lunch can't beat that. It's never been a place for great service, but the food was good and the bar is always friendly. The last two visits have been shockingly disappointing. The owner is the worst restaurant manager. She is cranky, arrogant and disorganized.The wait staff run around like squirrels and provide forgetful and slow service. And, in the past, the food was always dependable ...not any more. Tonight, by the time the food finally arrived, it was cold. My husband's French Dip was burned around the edges and cold...the dip tasted like beef stock from a can and the fries were bitty little crumbs....awful! We went there, for our first time, on Monday. What a secret gem! The food was delicious (French Dip sandwich and fish special and a cup of split pea soup). Although it was our first time, we are very picky and couldn't find fault with anything. There were some very colorful "regulars" at the bar and the Bartender kept them happy and content. My Husband and I enjoyed the local banter, not being from this side of CT. It was nice to hear real mature conversations and some good-natured ribbing going on. I'm just leaving The Hide Away restaurant, in Old Lyme, CT right now. When I walked in to be seated, everyone in our area stopped talking and stared at me. It took about two minutes for them to stop staring and to start talking again. The waitress sat me and my friend in the very back of the restaurant in a corner, where no one can be seen..... literally under the stairs, when there were 6 open tables on the floor. After feeling very uncomfortable from being separated from the rest of the crowd, we decided to get up and go to the bar for a second chance. As soon as we got up from the table a waiter (Lori) and a couple of her staff followed us to watch. We went to the bar and the bartender acted as though she didn't want to serve us. She was extremely rude and nonengaging. No eye contact and short conversation , which is completely different as to how she was engaging the others around us. We then decided to leave. As we stood up to leave, we discovered the that the staff who followed us earlier was still watching us. As we left, they stared and laughed at us in our faces. Place was good years ago. No more! Staff is lazy and does not come back to tables. Many customers complained while there. Food appears to be precooked and microwaved before bringing out. One meal was way undercooked, could not get staff's attention for 15 minutes. Finally came to table and as everyone was almost done told staff forget the undercooked meal. Went there for the first time in a while. Sat at a table in the bar area. Waitress/bartender(couldn't tell which) was rude, slow and just plain awful! We usually enjoy it there. You would think with half capacity and half the customers, she would be extra attentive! I'm in the business and I have NEVER only left 15%. That was more than she deserved. Best seafood chowder ever on the shoreline ! Went last week for lunch. Five people in our party and each one had something different. Hubby and I had seafood chowder and was to die for. He had bowl and I had a cup. Daughter in law had the lobster roll and I had fresh flounder, husband had whole belly clams and son had scallops... Granddaughter had a pasta dish. Just left The Hideaway. My sister and I were in search of some last minute local dining and were thoroughly disappointed. We called in our take out order of 2 salads (spinach salad and garden salad with hard boiled egg) at 7:02pm and were told the wait was 10 minutes. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:36pm and were told "the spinach salad is not quite ready yet". After 10 more minutes of waiting, I was rudely told to sit down after the hostess who took the order asked to clarify what the order was in the first place, nearly an hour after the initial phone call. As I was waiting, the wait staff was talking poorly about other customers in the restaurant to the hostess. She stated "Oh no, I didn't know someone was behind me" when she she realized I was standing waiting for my food. When I received my salads, one was incorrect without the one addition that was asked and was so clearly a pre-made refrigerated item. The vegetables were almost frozen and tasted stale. The other salad was soggy with cold chicken, raw mushrooms that were not sliced and canned items. A true waste of $20 dollars. The people are unprofessional and the food is underwhelming. Weird place. We found this driving down 95 and it was one of the few things around that was open on a Sunday and close to 95 without being fast food. When we walked in no one came over to greet us (I see a lot of people wrote about waiting at the entrance for a long time) but we immediately went to sit at the bar, so problem avoided. This is a super local joint. Everyone was a regular and knew each other. I felt like I had crash landed on another planet where everything was outdated and everyone was retired. People looked at us like "who are these people and why are they here?" The food was fine, if average. We had to wait quite a while for it. I had a swiss cheese/mushroom burger and it was alright. The patty itself was average and the bun way too big. My boyfriend ordered the "rustic burger" without a bun, and ended up with the "black Russian burger melt" without a bun. When the server brought over his burger and mentioned "no bun," a lady next to us interjected with "no bun, no fun!!" (which honestly I found kind of hilarious if not obnoxious). He also had an order of hot wings - I'm not a wing person so I took some carrot and celery sticks with blue cheese...the blue cheese dip was definitely off. I would not come back here, partially because of the slow service and mediocre food, but more so because of what a local place it is and how uncomfortable it felt not being one of the locals. read more

They have so many delicious choices, I am partial to reubens and the Black Russian burger melt cannot be beat anywhere! The food was great, our waitress Eliza was wonderful despite it being her first week in the job. The woman at the hostess stand was simply nasty. She ignored us for several minutes as she typed on her screen without even acknowledging our presence, and then was frankly insulting when we had a question about the bill.
