I have always enjoyed my dining experience at the Hideaway. But recently, my husband and I went for what we thought would be a leisurely dinner. Our waitress was certainly pleasant enough but seemed to be in a rush to serve us and follow through with our bill. I finally slowed the process by ordering coffee followed by dessert. Prices are reasonable and service was good. My complaints come from the quality of food and management area. The food was ok, but the sides were clearly microwaved and the chicken was incredibly salty, to a point where it was overpowering. I should have known better, seeing as the menu and "Daily Specials" menu consists of innumerable items, few of which could be fresh based on the quantity. Perhaps my biggest qualm is the decor and facilities. The place is brutally dated with drapes, carpet, and tables that have been here since the 1980's. The bathroom is worse, as the toilet is cracked and covered in duct tape since the owners are too cheap to purchase a new one. Overall, not on my recommended list of restaurants. read more

Went there for Sunday breakfast and will likely never go again. We walked in and stood at the hostess station waiting to be seated. The restaurant was almost empty - there were perhaps three other tables seated - and yet, every staff member who walked by us, including the "hostess," ignored us for the first ten minutes we were there. We were finally seated at a table in the main dining room. The waitress took our drink order, and we ordered breakfast when she returned with the beverages. We were a party of seven, but no one had ordered anything complicated or elaborate; mostly simple bacon-egg-homefries-toast breakfasts. I ordered corned beef hash and eggs, because it was on the menu as "our own corned beef hash and eggs" and usually when something is labeled "our own" it's made in house. We waited nearly an hour for the food to come out, and when it did there were problems immediately. My hash was burned - the kitchen had not only scorched it to the pan, but they had chopped up the charred chunks and stirred it into the hash in a stupid attempt to conceal it (as if it wouldn't have tasted burned!) Another member of the party was served poached eggs in a small bowl of water (they hadn't been drained properly.) I sent the hash back to kitchen, and a few minutes later got a replacement: a side plate of greasy, wet canned hash heated up only long enough to make it a runny pile in the center of the plate. I guess "our own" is secret Hideaway code for "Hormel." The only recommendation I can make for this place is to change the name from "Hideaway" to "Stayaway." read more

The food was really terrible- Hungarian Goulash was bland beef stew - lots of noodles no paprika. My spouse had the burger and onion rings. The burger was tasteless and the onion rings were under cooked and "watery". The pretzel appetizer while the pretzel was fine the dish had remnants of someone's hamburgers on the appetizer late. Went to the Hideaway today for lunch. Haven't been there for a year due to Covid. We all had our vaccines and decided it was time to go again. I called last week and reserved a table for seven. Got there today and our table was not even ready. I said I called last week about the reservation and the lady said, oh yes you did. She took us to the table and proceeded to set it for us. That was the last we saw of her for at least 20 min. She came back, took our drink order and another 20 minutes passed before we got our drink. By then we decided we better order lunch never knowing if we would see her again. We got lunch and it was excellent. Waited another 20 plus minutes to take our dishes away and another 15 minutes to order dessert. Our waitress was not pleasant at all. Another 15? minutes to get our bill and a few more to finally come take our money. It was great being together with my friends. That is the only thing that made this terrible, unsatisfactory service that we got tolerable. Will we come back again??not for some time. Get some quality in your waitstaff. Oddly, there was not a single black bean in it, more like a minestrone with tomatoes and from a can for sure. We also had salads with salmon - honestly, you could get a better salad at a pizza restaurant. The restaurant does not know that any lettuce besides iceberg is an option. Yup, our salad was iceberg with a big hunk of salmon on top. The sign outside should say, "Restaurant Impossible Please Come Fix Us". A very good restaurant tucked away in a tiny shopping center. The menu has a little bit for everyone. Steak, fish, pasta, and more. The last time I ate here was for a birthday dinner. I had a great salad that consisted of field greens and was topped with rare yellowfin tuna. The portion of tuna was huge! My husband had the hanger steak and it was cooked perfectly. I stopped into the Hideaway right before checking out the Florence Griswold Museum down the road. It is tucked into the corner of a shopping center and could easily be overlooked by tourists like myself. The staff is great and the food is very good. Finding some place in Old Lyme open past 9pm on a Monday can be tough. We found this place by accident. It's truly a hideaway because it's tucked in the plaza and behind a few other places. Walking in I thought for sure it would be one of those places that if you weren't a local you might get a few sideways looks. However we were greeted by a friendly bartender. Service was quick and they have a big menu which was still available even tho it was after 9pm. They had a few tv's so we were able to catch the game. They also have a lot of seating around the bar and in the table areas. Prices were reasonable for drinks and appetizers. I ordered the stuffed mushrooms and they were delicious! I can't say anything about any of the other food, because that is all I ordered but I can say it was clean, the atmosphere was casual and comfortable and I would definitely go back to check it out again sometime. read more

Firstly, the food here is the best value for the money in Old Lyme, hands down. There is a large daily specials menu to supplement the already large regular menu with variety to suit any taste. Complementing the great cuisine is a wonderful, fun, and attentive staff that is well adept at remembering the favorites of all the locals that frequent this establishment to share great food, cocktails and laughs. What a nice time we had at the Hideaway Restaurant & Pub. The service was excellent. We were seated and waited on immediately. We had a peaceful, picturesque seat upstairs in a room that had a nice view of the marsh. Our waitress was excellent and very pleasant. The meal was delicious and served quickly. It was a hard choice because there were so many choices on the menu. My clam strips were great and fresh tasting, served with fries and coleslaw. Big amount of food, had to take some home. Not to mention affordable! Downstairs there was a talented and entertaining piano player which was the cherry on top of our evening out. I look forward to going back again. read more

Been a regular since Hideaway opened many years ago. The menu has tremendous variety - seafood, Mexican food, burgers, steak, sandwiches, salads, etc. There is a daily specials menu with a lot of choices too. They always have several soups from which to choose, including cold ones that some of my friends go for every time. My favorite appetizer is the boneless buffalo fingers. Very crisp and crunchy coating with just the right touch of spicy. We have held several private functions at Hideaway, including a family reunion. The decor is nice, but not upscale or fancy. Very comfortable place to dine. The service can be a little slow sometimes (especially if the place is crowded), so if you're in a hurry I would suggest you let your server know up front. read more

Wow, the name is certainly appropriate, it' sure is hard to find. A friend of mine told me that finding it was half the fun. Strange building, not sure what it was before the restaurant moved in, it's actually quite spacious, and even through it was crowded we didn't feel crushed. Perfect location for my family to meet - close to the highway, and the halfway point between those coming from Hartford and the others coming from RI. We've been coming here at least six times a year for many years. We have always overlooked the poor, yet friendly, service and mediocre, hit-or-miss food, But, no more. After today's visit, we all decided it is time to look for a new place. As usual, it took forever for the (friendly and personable) server to get our order. Then it took forever for the food to come out. And when it did, it was clear that my French dip sandwich had been dying in the window as the rest of our food was being prepared. And it came out without au jus. Seriously? Not a French dip if there is nothing to dip it in... After getting the server's attention, I asked that the sandwich be brought back to the kitchen and heated in the microwave. I'm not fussy, and I was hungry, so I was just looking for a quick solution. Well, it came back and it was still cold. Got my au jus, but the sandwich was still cold. Server was professional and courteous. She apologized and asked if there was something else I would like to order. As the kitchen is not known for its speed, I declined because I knew that a replacement meal would arrive just at the time when everyone else was finishing up. Then the hostess?/manager?/owner? came to the table to ask me to explain what was wrong with the food. Sorry, sister, but that was explained to the waitress, and I know she communicated it to you. I was not angry, I was not making a scene, and it was not a huge deal. I just wanted to enjoy the company of my family without interruption. So, you coming over and interrogating me further just made my experience more unpleasant and the others in my party uncomfortable. And what's worse is you did not offer an apology, but tried to somehow make it my fault by pointing out that this is one of your "best sellers". I don't care if it is one of your best sellers. The bottom line is MY sandwich was not good. How about you interrogate your line cooks and ask them why they are allowing inferior food to leave their kitchen? And the final straw... We had to look at two tray stands full of dirty dishes in the middle of the dining room during our entire stay. Come on, people. Time for a Hospitality 101 refresher course. read more

The Hideaway is exactly what it purports to be, good to above average food and drinks at a very reasonable price. Lots of daily specials, the soups are homemade and always very good. If you want fancy and expensive go somewhere else, An added plus is they usually have 10 to 12 beers on draft. It could use a face lift, but so could I. read more

Such a cute place! Definitely set a few decades back, the food remained delicious! I got the "flirtini" which was made perfectly! My aunt and I split the artichoke dip which was fantastic as well. Both of our dinners came with soup or salad and we both got the salad which was great. To finish, I ordered the lobster roll off the specials menu and my aunt had the scallops. Continues to be one of the worst restaurants we have eaten at on the shoreline.The bar scene is usually the same people ,in their same seats continuing to drink and drink and are so wasted they are yelling and the bartender or manager doesn't ask them to tone it down.I have experienced this a couple of times,I hear it frequently around town. Went here on the recommendation of others and instantly regretted it. The food was decent - it wasn't amazing or terrible, or particularly memorable at all. If the service were better, it could have knocked it up into the 3 star, OK category, but unfortunately, our experience was terrible. Do NOT go here if you have children under 12. Even though they have booster chairs and a kid menu, this place is NOT kid friendly at all. I swear they ignored us in the beginning hoping we would leave, but once they realized we were there to stay, it was only begrudgingly that we were seated. Waitress looked down her nose at us the entire time and didn't seem to care whether we enjoyed the food, needed refills, or whatnot. She barely stopped by twice. To our son's credit, he was actually pretty tired and quiet the entire meal, but I have never felt that uncomfortable in a restaurant before. From being ignored (except for the rude, pointed glares we occasionally received) to, when acknowledged, being treated as "less than" I would never go here again. We were treated as though we brought the bubonic plague into the restaurant instead of a child. Also, I do not know what the norm is there, but when it was mentioned to us, the word was that this was a "casual" restaurant. We could not have felt more out of place in our jeans and sweaters. Doorway is cramped, with cracked floor tiles. One of the double doors does not open, so handicapped people probably cannot get in. Is this even legal? Overall appears dingy, dusty. Menus feel grubby. "Service" is just awful! ( I did not tip, the only time since 1992, I think!) Requests for more water by the 7 of us were ompletely unfilled, ordered bacon took 2 requests to show up, and came after eggs were stone cold. Jelly for toast came after 2 requests, of course toast was cold by then. My soup never came, waitress suggested I have it after the entree was finshed. It was very delicious soup, but had it come before the meal, I might have ordered coffee afterwards Food used to be excellent, but prices are up, portions down, and the cucumber salad under my salmon at this visit was old, wilted, and had none of the lovely horseradish zing I enjoyed the last time I had it. Odd tables have little fold-up leaves on the edges so they can be round or square. But, many of the leaf springs are broken...when my friend attempted to fold her leaf down, three people rushed over to stop her, saying, "it will snap down and hurt you". ?!?!Maybe not a place to try with kids, or elderly relatives......... If you leave no tip, or complain, your waitress will run over shrieking to the manager/owner who will give you loud grief......just look below to see her reply to one of these reviews! How can you not be a fan of this spot. It's old school...the menu is enormous! Kid friendly, friendly, and they give a VERY generous pour of wine! My son loves the burger, with big old style steak fries. Not so common anymore! I like the onion soup - the kind you remember, salty, hot and in a crock. Got told about this restaurant. But we had a hard time finding it. Lets start with the 3 minute wait at the door with no clear instruction to seat yourself or wait. It wasn't busy and bar staff did see us. Then we had a "cozy warm corner" but we were quickly forgotten after given a menu and water. Then our waiter came over and asked for drink orders, we were fine with water. As a note there was a group of older people ordering an obscene amount of drinks getting super service (from our same waiter). He did not look at us even while he turned our way. We waited for about 10 minutes for him to take our food order before we got upset and left. Aditional things are the atmosphere is dated, drab, slow, and meant for older people.
