We had a lovely meal here on a Thursday evening. We were able to get a parking spot a couple buildings down. We had to wait a little for a table. The inside is a little small but it is cute. The menu has a variety of sandwiches, salads, and different entrees. They had specials for the day which was fun. We ordered the crispy brussel sprouts to split and they were delicious. A great crisp! I then ordered the Ahi Tuna Noodle Bowl and loved it. Tuna tasted fresh with great veggies and sauce. We made our first visit here several days ago, dropping in for a midday lunch on a pretty crowded Sunday. With some good and some not-so good, we concluded that we aren't likely to return -- in spite of the really yummy tartar sauce (more on that in a moment). Penny Lane is a bit of an English Pub-style restaurant on two levels. We ate upstairs since the lower level was filled (steps, no elevator that we saw). Service was slow to nonexistent. It took us ten minutes to get recognized by a server who asked if we wanted something to drink and took another five minutes to get it. After we ordered we waited 25 minutes to get our food. We got no drink refills. Maybe service is better in the first floor? Ah, the food. Fish and Chips is essentially pub food, so that's what we got. The crust was light and buttery, quite good. The fish was utterly without any sort of flavor, as bland as could be imagined in your worst imagining. The tartar sauce was super good, but it just couldn't disguise the fact that the fish was tasteless. We also tried the poached egg and corned beef hash, which was ok though the hash was kind ... well, and of a hash, unremarkable at best. Conclusion: There was little that was appealing in our experience. Oh yeah, another ten minutes to get our bill... a long afternoon. read more

Good pub. Decent food. Great service. Judging by some other reviews, I think we hit it just right and they weren't too busy for lunch on a Saturday. The bar seating was full, but we got right in upstairs at a cozy larger dining room. Service was excellent, professional, and did a great job. The menu was attractive. Lots of different drinks, classic pub food, your typical burgers, and fish and chips kinda stuff. But also a lot of other goodies too. I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with fries. It tasted good, the brioche roll was very fresh. I could have been seasoned more. I wasn't wow'd by it, but it was good. Fries were average, but tasted ok. I think the pricing was reasonable. I would definitely give Penny Lane Pub another try. I'm guessing though in the summer this place is tough to get into, just the vibe I got. read more

They allow pets in their small outdoor patio space. It was shaded by the building which was lovely on a hot day. Looking over the main street of shops was also a delight. The server brought a water bowl for my pet and was attentive throughout the meal. They had a lamb burger special that I ordered, but they ended up being out. I ordered the crab cake sandwich as a back up. The sandwich was okay, a little disappointing. It was on the dry side. I also ordered a slice of cheesecake for desert. It was tasty. We have been to Penny Lane twice recently and have had really great meals both times. The jerk shrimp plate (salad) was just full of things I love: brussel sprouts, goat cheese, butternut squash etc... And the hubby had the short rib pasta special which had a really nice gravy. They have seating on the first and second floor with a bar area as well. They recommend making a reservation and they make that pretty easy, I'm sure they get busier in the summer than these winter months. Definitely recommend and we'll be going back. read more

Hadn't been here for a number of years, so we thought we'd give it a try for dinner on St Paddy's day. My corned beef reuben was OK, with the beef being nicely lean. I would recommend serving the sandwich on a good marble rye instead of the seeded rye, but they may have been trying to keep with Irish tradition. My wife chose the Irish beef stew, which, unfortunately, had a number of sinewy chewy pieces, which I certainly wouldn't expect for $25.00 stew dish. Typically two reasons for this, the beef was either undercooked or of poorer quality cut. Service was very good for a busy night, so no issue there. All in all, we're glad we tried it again after a long absence, but we wouldn't rush right back there. read more

Stumbled upon this gem of a place yesterday and was genuinely impressed from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious -- the pretzel bites arrived hot and fresh, the meatloaf was hearty and comforting, and the green beans were cooked to absolute perfection. The shepherd's pie was another standout, cozy, flavorful, and wonderfully filling. And do not skip the bread pudding -- it was absolutely amazing and the perfect sweet finish to the meal. The only negative was our booth: right in front of the door, so every time it opened (and it was often), we got blasted with cold air. Next time we'll sit further in or upstairs. If you're running around Old Saybrook and need a quick, hearty meal, this is the place to be. read more

I will start by saying the food was delicious and somewhat reasonably priced. Atmosphere was lovely, no issues there. Service was poor, as in, it took forever to get our drinks - but that is not the worst part. Let me ask you this... When you go out to dinner, spending your hard earned dollars to escape from cooking and cleaning, do you really want someone's politics in your face? I'm not going to reveal which side - right or left - the server leaned. It's irrelevant. My point is this: our waitress wore very large earrings that CLEARLY advocated for a specific political position. For me, eating out is to take me away from the stress of our divided nation, not immerse me in a stranger's opinion. I suppose if you are in agreement with the server's position, perhaps it won't bother you. But even then... no politics at dinner!! Give it a rest already, I just want to relax. I won't risk this happening again; I'll eat elsewhere until PLP creates a wait staff dress code. read more

I really like this place. The food is great and so are the drinks. I had the impossible burger and the Brussels sprouts and they were both really good. I appreciate the veggie options. Went for brunch which offered a lovely brunch menu along with a specials menu and the regular menu! There was a margarita drink special for cinco de mayo and it was really good. We tried the California Benny and the avocado omelette - both were so yummy and perfectly cooked. The hash browns were well seasoned and the side salad was super fresh. We had to wait for drinks, ask multiple times for a specials menu (each time we asked was like it was the first time she heard it), one place setting for a table of four, they brought a shareable appetizer with no plates, brought food then didn't see server again for about 30 minutes( never checked on food). I grew up in Old Saybrook and every time I visit, I make it a point to come for legitimately the BEST spinach and artichoke dip I've ever had. It is located right on main Street in the style of an English pub. The menu has changed over the years and it's definitely not cheap, but the food is always great and the staff is wonderful. They also have a decent drink menu with local beers. We prefer sitting in the giant booths downstairs that can fit 6-8 people. It's also one of the few spots you can get peppermint ice cream year round. read more

Cute smaller L shaped bar area with seating for about 10 ppl. 2 large flat screen tvs with a variety of current sports & tv programs. There's bar height tables and 2 & 4 tops scattered throughout the main level with a spacious open Dining area upstairs also. The staff here are great: Courteous, knowledgeable, friendly, efficient & helpful. They have a VERY good well rounded cocktail, wine, beer, cider & NA drinks menu. The menus is equally as well rounded: a variety of great appetizers. soups, salads, sandwiches, & entrees. They also have a Specials menu reflecting seasonal or holiday offerings. They have great music piped overhead that is audible but doesn't drown out conversation. It's clean & has the requisite tavern pub memorabilia throughout. Penny Lane is becoming one of our favorite stops. They pay careful attention to food allergies and their grilled chicken salad is the best I've had in CT. Change my mind, you can't. The house balsamic Dijon mustard is so flavorful it truly complements the perfectly grilled chicken. My child's burger was cooked as requested and they oven baked fries to not contaminate with gluten. Our server was friendly and the location is perfect. We will be back! read more

Stopped by here along our road trip from Rhode Island to Philadelphia and it was an easy stop to avoid fast food chains. Parking on the main street was available and there was no wait at 2pm on a Sunday. We dined upstairs where there were less people and tables were nicely spread out. I had the egg sandwich with bacon and my husband ordered a blt (not on the menu but wasn't an issue). Our server was nice and eagerly remedied a problem when I had to ask for another salad since I forgot to mention my food allergy. The coffee from Ashlawn was great so I had it black. Once you're done eating, walk along the strip to stop in some cute shops. Happy we made the stop! read more

Was on an afternoon adventure with a friend and ended up in Old Saybrook...it was the day before Easter and honestly, not expecting much. I had been to Penny Lane years ago and remembered that the food was great! It was early afternoon and busy... we waited a very short time for a table at street level, second floor was out of the question for two "mature" ladies. The staff was fabulous and accommodating. We started with the spinach artichoke dip... the BEST I have had! I had the chopped Cobb salad, my friend had the potato leek soup, which she was trying for the first time. Delicious!! She also had cheese cake for dessert while I was trying to finish the huge, but tasty salad! We left there satisfied and knowing we'd be back! Sorry to say now we're a little skeptical to go to the PLP again,but we will because we've always enjoyed it in the past.Recently I picked up a Chili to go and there wasn't anything in it.It had hardly any meat or beans for almost 10 dollars. A month later we went back. We dined in and ordered the Poached Pear Salad again.It wasn't the same as previous times. It had no flavor and didn't look too fresh. We also ordered their Steak tip nachos which weren't good at all. We never had them before,and would never order them again. The steak was ok but the whole appetizer as a whole was dry and lacking any flavor.I'd suggest maybe adding more salsa and more of the cilantro aioli.We will give the restaurant another chance.
