Instantly I felt comfortable here, like I used to at Draught Horse during my Hyde Park years. The doorman laughed at my lame joke ("this wallet should qualify me as over 21") and we were instantly greeted by David Bowie, comfortable tables and bar stools, 20/30 something crowd, great lighting, and low-and-behold 2 dart boards (total bonus). There's indoor and outdoor seating, awesome waitstaff and fantastic food. We just had some cheese fries but they were delicious and waffley. And, some cokes (back on the wagon after my new years annihilation). Plus, the place isn't all smokey like the PLT (parmer lane tavern). And, it's not all boring like the Opal Devines. When I'm just looking to grab a beer in a pair of jeans, this is the place I go. It's casual, comfortable, interesting, and it serves Guinness on tap. Among the things I love about this place: Guinness on tap, constant movies playing, completely chill vibe, queso, truly awesome patio, pleasant staff, low prices. I've seen a lot of great movies - like Full Metal Jacket - for the first time because I was sitting at the bar when it came on. I also love that Guinness is a full $2, at least, less here than it is elsewhere. The patio's expansive, and they have servers working it when it's a peak time. One of the best experiences I've ever had in Austin was the time I headed to the Hideout just before a hard rain and sat under the metal roof on the patio, just listening to the rain and relaxing with a pint. There's a good mix of people here. I can usually look forward to meeting or seeing someone interesting. Best part, though? No hipsters. And if I want to just hang out at the bar and not be bothered, I can do that, too. The staff is friendly, and they remember me well enough to start pouring a Guinness the minute I sit down at the bar after a few years' worth of one to two visits a month on average. The food isn't the most stellar I've had, but the queso and nachos are both good. I'd say you're safe with almost anything on the menu, though the salsa is questionable. It can be difficult to find for some. Some would say that's a drawback; I think it's a positive thing. Low-key place where you can grab a beer and enjoy yourself, whatever that means for you. My wife has a seafood allergy- so severe is this allergy that if any seafood is fried in the same oil as something she is consuming, she will have an allergic reaction. This is why we loved the Hideout- they served NO seafood and had wonderful service, food, and especially, Waffle Fries (which are her favorite!!) Yesterday, we arrived at the Hideout for a quick bite, only to find out they had a new menu featuring a fried fish filet. We were bummed but did as we always do and asked if they fried their fries separately, (No, almost nobody does) and when that failed asked if they could bake their fries - sometimes it can be done, not this time. We were pretty bummed out- as we were prepping to decide whether to leave or not and forever mark the Hideout as yet another place we couldn't go, a manager (owner?) or something came out and started talking with us. He said this: "We have just changed the oil in the fryer, I can guarantee you that this particular fryer has not been used to cook any fish- I've also labeled one fryer as fish only. I'm going to try and keep it that way." Not only did he take the time to investigate whether or not she could eat, but he also created a solution to cross-contamination for his food. I realize this is not a health-code rule (though it freakin' should be) and he cannot guarantee that on busy nights, accidents happen, but he went above and beyond to keep us as FOREVER customers of the Hideout. The name of this pub explains 100% how I felt when I walked in to this really dark divey bar. The place consisted of 99% man me and my friend were females but we just went for the happy hour drinks. The beer selection is OK and they have most liquors. The AC worked the music was OK the TVs worked you can't ask for too much considering what you are paying for a decent beer. If you're looking for a pup to hide out at and not be found this is the place. Parking lot is a little rough but sufficient parking spots. read more

This is my go to place, you can find me here every Friday night (and some random days of the week, depending on how much the man has me down). The staff is awesome, they are mostly friendly and if they aren't, well just have a couple more drinks and remember you are in a divey bar. I always order from the bar, I haven't yet figured out the magic to having a waiter/waitress address me for a drink order, however they are generally quick at the bar so this hasn't been much of an issue. The patio is pretty inviting all year with the weather the way it is here in Austin, and it is large enough to accommodate quite a few thirsty patrons. Things to know: 1. $10 dollar minimum tab for plastic (this is pretty common, but coming from West Texas I didn't understand this at first) 2. You probably aren't going to get wait staff unless you ask for it. Ordering from the bar can be a slight pain in the ass on a very busy night, just be looking for a bartender and they will find you. Stare at your cell phone and hold up the line, and you may get passed up. 3. If you are a broke college student, low paid employee... or just broke, $2 draft lone star will get you where you need to go, and you won't find a draft in Austin for less than 2 bucks. 4. I first started going to the Hideout because my boyfriend was a huge fan of their cheap beer - I wasn't always the biggest fan, but this place has really won me over. Atmosphere - Well, they keep to the theme of a Hideout. The bar is pretty dark on the inside, exactly what you would expect for a local dive bar. They play some awesomely bad movies during the week on the large screen TVs and there's always sports on somewhere. The chairs/booths are nice (and new!), and there's darts and a couple of old arcade games (Mrs. Pac Man included). Service - The only have waitresses four nights out of the week, but these ladies are AWESOME. Forgive me, because I can't remember their names, but we were at the Hideout probably a few days a week this summer, took a small hiatus, and headed back and she still knew my order! I love when people remember what you like to drink - I feel like that's WHY you have a local bar, where somebody always knows your name, and they're glad you came. Sorry, couldn't resist. Drinks - Beer's cheap and good, what more do you need? Food - Ah, here's where we lose the star. The Hideout, believe it or not, has PERFECTED the art of frying food. I don't know that I've had a better waffle fry in my life, or jalepeno popper - but, why does your menu say it's a "heaping" basket when really, there's only eight waffle fries in my $3.99 basket? :( You're lucky I'm a fry slut and I'll still order it, but by the time I get to the bottom of my not-so-heaping basket, I slightly regret giving in to it given how small the order is for the price. The burgers and wings at this place are also great, but kind of suffer from the same problem - just ever-so-slightly overpriced for the portions. I think this place is great in the summer, loses some of its appeal in the colder months when you can't sit out on the back deck. So went here tonight and was stoked because everytime I go here I love to get me some hornsby's cider. Well I walked up and asked what ciders they had because I didnt see any. Then they said it... Ace Pear. I nearly went into a nerd rage. I could feel me slowly turn green as I about Hulked out. Did a little counting to 10 then chilled. After years of hearing about this place, I finally came and met a friend for drinks. Pretty, pretty, preeeeetty positive I found my new go-to spot for drinks with girlfriends. One- this place is a hop, skip and jump from my house. I seriously felt silly driving my car here, so +1 automatically. Lord knows a girl needs a neighborhood bar where she can drink/walk to & fro. Two- the drinks are just the right price at just the right strength. $2.50 for calls? Say what?? Three- completely clear of douche bag aholes found near/south of the river. Within seconds of walking into Hideout - which is dangerously close to where I live - my roommate, a close friend and I all declared it as a new favorite. I've been there since and I still feel the same way. It's a great bar, hands down. There's a huge outdoor patio area, designated for smokers but not bad just for hanging out if you can stand it, the drinks are cheap, the jukebox is great and the movies they play are always a conversation starter. As Tina T mentioned, there is a lack of pretentious assholes here, which is a definite plus. Another plus for not being the type of bar that only attracts one specific "type" of person - a little variety never hurt anybody. I have a great time here and I couldn't imagine that changing. My only small pet peeve with the place is that most of the times I've been, I've been carded more than once. Other than that, perfect. read more

My husband and I visited austin for a month while on our year long US tour. We were looking for great happy hour deals near us, and found the Hideout Pub! We went on a Wed for the $1.75 lonestars, and 50 cent wings! What a deal! The wings were big and tasty, and the regular buffalo was my favorite. Years ago when Austin was home and friends and I converged in the north-ish area this was our watering hole. It was great. I remember (or do I?) many a night getting sauced here. Weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly. We spent a lot of time here. This was around the time of my first job out of college, of course, I was depressed. I'm not sure why the door guys didn't recognize us. This is down the street from where I work and my first time here was only last week. How sad. The environment inside is a bit dark for a happy hour. Might just be me though because I feel weird when I leave a place after drinking a few beers and have to squint to see. Kind of like an alcoholic. ( I don't go to meetings so I'm not one ) The patio however gives way to great times right after work. The beer is cheap, even without the happy hour prices. There's plenty of selection also. Hump Day Happy Hour includes 25 cent wings all day long. The wings weren't great but you can't beat 25 cents. The definite highlight of the time though was that burger. The bread was semi sweet and fluffy. The cow was juicy. The fixings on the burger also worked well in between that bread. I've been to a couple of dive bars here but I haven't found one like this in Austin. Good place to sit and relax. read more

The Hideout is a hodge podge of so many different types of people I love it. I'm not a fan of the inside. It's sooo dark. However, I do love me the patio. Oh, and the food is good and they have some super awesome drink specials. The patio is big and spacious. Not ridiculously crowded with tables and chairs. I love it. I don't have to continuously apologize to my table neighbors when we are heading to the toilettes. You know how it is when ya break the seal, right? The burgers are really good, seriously. Really good fried pickles and CRUNCHY yummy waffle fries. If you like a plate of fried stuff, try the sampler. Everything is completely fried and crunchy, not oily. So, that's always a plus when going fried. Can you believe that The Hideout offers good bar food AND really good drink specials? Believe it. We were there for $2 wells and left happier than a coondog on a bare leg. The service is not the best, but it's not too bad either. If they would only hire a waitress or two, the service would probably be a lot better. A couple girls can only go as fast as they can go. They aren't slow, just need more help. Despite the slower than I would like service, places in N. Austin are few and far between, so I will definitely be back. I'm glad I found this little gem of a dive hidden below Mopac. read more

I've not headed down to the Hideout as often as I used to - since Weirdo's opened, there hasn't been much of a reason. A friend of mine wanted to go last night though, so I drove that extra 1000 feet, and I am glad I did. The music was too loud inside, as always, so we headed to their giant porch for a pitcher of $8 LoneStar, Jalapeno Bites, and Chicken Strips. Their menu isn't healthy at all (most everything seems to be fried), but damn do they make some good food. Our waitress was efficient, and friendly, though she did seem a little rushed. My friend had two of the margaritas on the rocks, and she said that both were pretty sweet and fairly low in Tequila. The porch does allow smoking, so keep that in mind if you're not into that. read more

I live downtown, but I work up north, and I was given the daunting task of finding a decent place for a post-work happy hour. Does anything cool/fun/hip exist north of 183? I had no idea, so I jumped on Yelp, read some reviews, and decided to check this place out. I'm so glad that I did! Hideout is a great place to grab a few drinks with a group of friends. The outside patio is large and welcoming, and perfect for large groups. The inside is cold, dark, clean, and better suited for more intimate groups. The jukebox has a WIDE variety of music to choose from, they have a nice selection of old school video games, and they have great movies playing on the screens behind the bar. Hideout carries your standard pub grub: burgers, fries, etc. Unfortunately, all very glutenous, but the boyfriend says his A1 burger was top notch. They do have some salads that can be easily made gluten-free, but I wasn't in the mood to try one, maybe next time! Now for the best part, THE DRINKS! The drinks are cheap, and strong. $2 wells during HH, but they only go up to $2.50 once 7pm hits. They have a wide variety of beers that are also cheap. The boyfriend's Firemans pint was only $3 during HH. They have lots of local beers, and even a gluten-free beer that I'm still too afraid to try for fear it tastes like poo...like most gluten-free substitutions. Another plus: HH is everyday and this makes me very happy. The only con is I think they need to hire more waitresses. The service outside was VERY slow, and apparently this has been noted before by other people, so... just think about it Hideout. All in all, I think I found a new post-work Friday hangout. Cheapish pitchers of Lone Star, I think they were $8. Weird location, but I like it. Parking lot is really terribly designed but you can park on the road with no worries cause it pretty much leads to nowhere / another bar (Weirdos). The bartenders are super duper friendly and so is the guy at the front door with the moustache. Marcus, the guy who owns Barfly's and that one place down South (I can never remember the name!) also owns Hideout. Hideout is definitely nicer (or whatever) than Barfly's and caters to a little different of a crowd. Regardless of how you do or do not label yourself, you'll feel just fine here. Laid back, clean, nice atmosphere. The womens' RR was super clean too, which is awesome. It wasn't terribly crowded when we went on the Thursday before Easter but I have driven by a bunch of times when going to Weirdos and it seemed pretty hoppin'. read more

Really good food! Nice beer selections (most importantly). Always, always, always great music!! (second most importantly) But! The servers take an AWFUL long time to bring your order. I would much rather wait 4 min behind a crowd of people at the bar to get beer than wait 40 min for one of the really nice (but bafflingly indifferent) servers to take my order. The real shame is that I live really close to this bar, which I frequented about 5-6 times due to its charm, but each single time frustrations boiled over when we had to chase down someone to take our orders out in the patio. Went here for the first time last night. My boyfriend & I are always looking for places that are close to home, so after reading about this place on Yelp we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did. Great little place. Had Monday Night Football on a big screen so it could be seen from everywhere. Beer prices were great, and the beer was crisp & cold. Food was great. I read about this place on Yelp. Everyone LOVES this place! I told my friend that we should meet up for happy hour. She had told me that she had been here before and it was a cool, chill, fun, divey place. I got there a little after 5 on a Thursday and I had to park in the street. The parking lot is small and I'm sure it get's a little crazy when it as it's peak. I walked in and all the windows were covered with curtains to shield from the bright lights. The place is cozy and there's lots of seating options. There's even a patio out back. I see it when I drive by but didn't get a first glance at it. The biggest thing that drew me here were their awesome drink prices! There's happy hours specials and there's decent but cheap beer and liquor. It's bar service so you just get up and go get what you want at the bar. I think...I was running late so my friend had me all set up when I arrived. It was a quick visit to The Hideout but I'm definitely looking forward to future visits. Especially since it's so close to work! An easy get away after a long shift. read more

I have to give this place props for being out of the norm. I'm always on the lookout for a fun North Austin dive-ish (but not too dive-ish) bar. It doesn't hurt that this place is in walking distance from my house! It just seems like it could be so much improved by adding two things: 1. More comfort. The seats are uncomfortable and I feel like I'm stuck out in the middle of the room. I can't "hide out" (oh no I didn't) and chill with my friends. 2. A better variety of beer on tap. When we last visited, the most exotic offering they had was Dos Equis so we all ended up with one. I want to like this place for having the balls to be in a unique location. I want to like this place for the lack of crowds that are getting harder and harder to avoid here in Austin. I'll be back, but it hasn't made it to the top of my hangout list. read more

Service was incredibly bad. Heard it was a dive with great burgers. True on both counts, both of which I enjoy. Sunday night, 8:45 pm (place closes at 2 am), only two other tables occupied, both parties already eating. Coupla guys playing darts. Half dozen settled in at the bar. At least three people behind the bar, plus more in the kitchen. Menus on the table. After quite a wait, my son and I ended up walking over and ordering at the bar. Walked our beers back to our table NEAR the bar. After 30 minutes, they finally brought our burgers with only two paper napkins to share for these delicious, messy meals, steak knives (?), but no forks to scoop up what fell out. Said they forgot about us. Didn't ask if we wanted more beers or anything else. That was the one and only time anyone visited our table during the hour and fifteen minutes we sat there. Had to walk up to the bar to get our check and pay. I don't mind a nice little walk. Heck we were pretty hungry and thirsty when we got there after a long day of hiking in the Hill Country. Passed up a lot of good places to pick Hideout Pub for our late dinner. But if half of the experience is waiting on service, they should at least put an obvious sign on the table telling guests they have to go to the bar whenever they want anything. Fine by me. Just TELL me, for heaven's sake, so I don't just sit there expecting basic restaurant or bar service like everywhere else! They must have plenty of regulars who like being treated like "family". As for me, I won't be one of them. I like cooking too much and I don't mind doing the dishes, the only two things I didn't have to do for myself, besides saving most of the $45 I shelled out for two burgers, two beers, and -- did I already mention t? -- incredibly bad service. Great place to hang out with friends both inside and outside. No frills, no bluster, just a great "hideout" kind of bar to chill out, have some beers, and enjoy the company of others. Outside patio has a great number of picnic tables that adjoin in rows and seating can be quite communal at times. This is great, since everyone is there to have a good time, you often end up talking with other groups of people and expanding your own group. Lot's do look at, great crowd, and reasonably priced drinks. I use the term "dive bar" in the most respectful and flattering way it can be interpreted. Being a north-siiiiiiide'er, I'm always on the lookout for a good spot to have a cold beer, and The Hideout gets a solid B+ for me. The food was decent (although they were "out" of their famous waffle fries that night... wtf?) and the beer selection/pricing was adequate. Plenty of TVs and the jukebox seemed to have a good selection of tunes. Didn't venture out to the patio but I've heard rave reviews about this joint's patio so I guess it rocks (??). One thing I don't get, though, is the whole "line up for beer" thing. Very few places in Austin do this and I guess it just depends on the bar's setup, the bartender and its patrons. Anyways, that's all I had on my brain when I left so had to mention it. I guess I just prefer the traditional "belly up and order" way. All in all, though, The Hideout's a good place to chill and have a few drinks and food up on the north side... especially if you don't want to deal with Weirdo's, you're not in the mood for karaoke and one of the Canary bars or don't want to spend an arm and a leg in the Domain. Edit to add: Had the burger, and it was decent. What I was a little dismayed over was the chill (and cheese) on the fries. I shoulda known better, knowing this place is owned by the same fellas that own Pour House on Burnet. Their chili is basically ground meat with some seasoning. And the cheese? Just a little shredded cheddar. Come on Hideout/Pour House. This is Texas, and y'all are supposed to know how to do chili. And would it kill ya to get some actual melted cheese to throw on those fries? Also, yeah... the place is kinda dark, but that's what you want in a dive-ish bar vibe. read more

CHEAP! SO CHEAP! Bottle selection is pretty rad. This place is great. For a "neighborhood bar" I really couldn't ask for more. Darts. Pool. Food (American pub food, not Irish). Huge patio. Hot but cool cocktail waitresses. Movies. Sports. Generally friendly, laid-back customers of all different sorts. The place basically has it all, including my favorite juke box in town...It's really 90's. They know who they are catering to. The owner is super cool, but some of the other bartenders make me uncomfortable. "Perpetually angry looking" is how I would describe them, which is why I can't give the place 5 stars, but they've never been anything but nice to me. MY FAVORITE BAR IN NORTH AUSTIN! Ever since I left West Campus i.e. college, and Cain and Able's wasn't my "go to" bar, I've longed for a local bar that was enjoyable, affordable, decent food, not full of douche-bags and within walking distance. Sure Weirdo's is closer, but it's full of douche-bags. One night I got a wild hair and decided to buy a Lunch Deal for the Hideout. I had the miniburgers and I was hooked. They are super juicy, tender, properly seasoned, and around $8 for 3. I'd say they are bigger than Phil's Icehouse and 3x the size as the ones at Urban Grill. The service was really bad here once but not always..They stopped serving us drinks saying that we have the right to reject you drinks. It would have been fine if we were causing them or others any kind of trouble but we were just drinking our beers minding our own business. In fact they took away the beers that we were already drinking and sent us away. When asked for the reason they said "we just want to make sure our customers are not too drink so that they can go home safe." Other than that this is my fav places here in Austin. This place was great. We were visitng Austin from out of town and a local friend told my brother and I about this place. We sat outside and tried some local brews and hung out. They have a great, large outdoor patio. Their water was self serve, so you wouldn't have to wait on servers to get more water. Great idea! The waitresses are all really great. We ordered the Austin burger and the Works burger. They cost $9.00 each and were well worth the price. Huge burgers that you can get cooked to any temperature you want. We met one of the regulars, and he was a cool dude. We ended up staying for around 3 hours, just hanging out. If you are looking for great food and cheaper drinks, try this place because I loved them. read more
