We went here while visiting family in Austin and for someone that used to live in Austin, this is by far the best locals, dive-y bar in Austin (located in north Austin more specifically). They have a pool table, poker tables, dart boards and a fully stocked bar. They have a locals darts league and the entire bar was packed the few times we went here. Smoking bar....went there to check out a dart tournament that they host. There was an enthusiastic dart group even for a Sunday. I can't get myself to eat in a Smokey bar so I can't comment on food. The bartender was a 20 something young lady, very nice and personable, no complaints about service. Outside of the dart group, it was an older crowd. All in all, the real turn off here is the smoking. Aside from that it is a pretty typical Austin bar outside of the downtown area. read more

This is a small smokey dive bar that has cheap booze, live music, and bar food. What more can you ask for?! Well I only ask that the patrons stop staring at our group so hard! I had my 3 gay fierce and fabulous friends with me maybe that's why?... Nonetheless we ignored all the staring fools and got straight to the shots!! Met some great locals and the bartenders were so sweet. Free crawfish is a great way to get new patrons visibility of this place. Hidden at the end of the freeway mopac (loop 1). Lots of people were playing darts, this bar has a whole wall dedicated to the dart boards. read more

At first glance it was a typical Wells Branch bar. Unique in that you could smoke inside (A luxury in this day and age) They had a kitchen which I constantly wondered about for a while. But never gave it much of a chance. Then I heard from a friend they got a new chef/cook. And that he was pretty damn good. I ended up wandering in and ordering up. The menu wasn't too fancy. Some BBQ staples (Sandwiches, tacos, nachos.) Burgers, Fries and wings. Not too fancy and not too hard to pull off. But truly good examples are a bit rare. The food is good. I've had the burgers and wings so far. And I'm going to be coming back for more. And it's served with pride. My five stars are because with the new cook, TBags does what it does well. Great little neighbood dive bar with a ton of games. Cheap drinks and a good local vibe. They do karaoke for free Tues through Friday and have a ton of songs. I haven't eaten any of the food, but from what I've heard its pretty darn good. You can smoke cigs in the bar too, so if you plan on staying long and drinking your face off, expect a stinky ciggy smell. Good bartenders and overall a fun time. read more

Retro. Great bar, friendly staff, good prices...but no food until 5pm, so I had to drop a star. I say retro because it reminds me of a late 80s bar...a wall full of dart boards--not electronic thank goodness--pool tables, and ample seating around, dark, and a little smoke which I haven't seen in ages with the new laws--but that kind of defines a bar. If you are looking for a good dive bar location in North Austin, T-BAGs is your place. Since it is just on the outside edge of the city ordinance smoking ban, you can't smoke there. This is both a pro and a con. Personally, while I don't smoke, I definitely enjoyed the ambiance of most dive bars in Austin pre-smoking ban, but ever since the ban, my body has clearly gotten used to it and I always stink of smoke regardless of how long I'm there. That said. The beer is cheap and plentiful, the staff and patrons are always in good spirits, music the circulates through there is usually very good. Free poker games throughout the week with $20 pots to win. Might not seem like a big pot to win but when its free and a legal game of poker to play with other seriously good poker players, it still turns into a fun night. If you can handle the smoke, then you'll love this place. Other thing to be cautious of is the parking lot is cramped and not the best in terms of security. So hopefully you can grab a spot, but if you do...make sure all valuables are hidden or removed from the car. read more

No, the bar is not on fire...it just attracts a lot of smokers. This place is fun little dive bar but not meant to be ventured by the preggers, the asthmatics, or former smokers who are itching to smoke that "last cigarette." Smoke plumes dance out of the door as you walk in. It is that bad. I do love hole in the wall bars, though. The beers are cheap and the employees are friendly. My fiancé left his credit card behind on a Friday evening and I went to pick it up for him on Monday. I showed up at 11:55 am and there was a small crowd waiting to get inside the door. Now those are some devoted drinkers! I swear, one lady was in her 80's! I didn't try anything off the menu so I can't speak for the food but the ambiance is exactly what you are expecting it to be. This is definitely The Horseshoe Lounge of north Austin. Interestingly, this bar also falls beyond the realm of the smoke ban, so you can light up freely w/o any worry or precautions. Cheap domestic beers, NASCAR on the tube, & darked-out windows makes this a diamond in the North ATX rough! The bar staff is friendly & the patrons seemed to be regulars who frequent the place regularly, & had a "Cheers"-like personality about them. This unholiest of dive bars is a place I wouldn't frequent all that much if I lived in Wells Branch but bars like this are a dying breed here & it's nice to know that Texas Bar has survived. read more

Have you ever watched a movie where people walk in to a bar and it is run-down, full of people who are obviously regulars, smoke hangs in the air with random sports playing on aging tv screens? This is that place. The only stereotype it sheds is that it is in a late-70's styled little strip center who's main business is a gas station. But it does have plenty of parking. The beers are not as cheap as I thought they would be, they serve food but I didn't think about ordering until it was too late. A friend had something and said it was ok but nothing special. There are 2 reasons to go this bar. First, atmosphere. If you want a hole in the world to hide in where how you dress is irrelevant and you can keep your head down and be left to your own devices, this is your place. It's great in that way. There aren't many places left that are really like this. Second, they hold poker tournaments there almost every night. I love poker. It's why I was there. It was a lot of fun. Almost everyone there plays regularly so the atmosphere is fantastic. I had fun. The negatives. The smoke is almost suffocating. If your drinking you can numb yourself to it but I'm not around smoke very much and after the beer started to wear off at the end of the night my eyes we're burning. Like I poured soap in them. Also, they have open mic. nights. It was terrible. Apparently, the "band" that was there plays often. It is way to loud for those playing poker and they are terrible. Just terrible. I don't drink much so I rarely go to bars anymore but I'll probably be back to play some poker soon. read more
