I have not written a yelp review in years (was elite at one point) but I felt compelled to write one for this place. Having lived in charlotte for a bit traveling across the southeast for work I have eaten a lot of bbq, and there really is not much good bbq in the entire northeast. I have gone to many 4.5 rated places and been completely underwhelmed with the offerings. I didn't really like giving negative reviews which is why I stopped posting, but I wouldn't give any bbq place I've been in the northeast above 3 stars being generous. This is probably the best brisket I have had since moving back north. Juicy and fatty slices. No sauce needed at all. Just pure melt in your mouth brisket. This probably wouldn't be a 5 in Texas, but I would still rather eat here if I was in Texas than wait in a 3 hour line. In the northeast, the brisket is probably the best I've had. Can't comment on sauces or sides since I only got 1lb of brisket and a half slab of ribs. I do like the ribs I smoke better, but I still think they are a 5 for the northeast. Check their google listing because as of July they are also open on Wednesday for the summer at least. I really expect very little from bbq up here and that brisket reminded me of some of my travels thru the Carolinas, Georgia and Texas. I have not been to a place before that even remotely reminded of good southern bbq. read more

The food was great, you could smell how good it was gonna be from outside. I got the burnt ends special with smoked Mac and my wife got the pulled pork sandwich. Both were fantastic and they were super attentive. If you're in the area this is the type of place you wanna get BBQ! read more

Amazing BBQ no frills spot. We were staying nearby at an Airbnb and craved some barbecue- High On The Hog did not dissappoint. Great portions. My dad had the fried haddock (Friday special), mu husband has the brisket and I had the chicken wings. All cooked to perfection.. and the fries are delicious. Don't skip the smoked mac and cheese- very cheesy! We have we're so satisfied we went back a second time before we started on our way back to NYC. This time we had burgers and half a rack of end-- also very tasty. Rhonda was outstanding... and so was the young cook (can't recall his name). I don't think I've had such great service at a barbecue place before. Don't miss out on this place with delish bbq and it won't break the bank! Located in a non discriped strip mall, you walk in to a clean restaurant that has the best smells coming from the kitchen. We had the brisket and an order of Mac and cheese with pulled pork, along with salt potatoes. The portions were more than ample, the only complaint I had was the Mac and cheese would be better if it was homemade. read more

My pulled chicken sandwich was jam packed with moist chicken with BBQ sauce and some on the side, absolutely delicious!! I am from an area of Upstate NY that is known for sale potatoes. The sale potatoes here were just red potatoes, large. Hardly any salt and no butter. Bit disappointed. Homemade potato chips were fantastic and a nice surprise!! Brisket was very good!! Out of towner in for a Hike at Vrooman's nose. Three adult and three kids. It was clean and inviting. They quickly made us feel right at home. I'm pretty picky when it comes to BBQ and this joint did not disappoint. I strongly recommend the ribs for anyone who doesn't like ribs. You won't find better. Everything was better than expected. The coleslaw, slat potatoes, smoked mac n cheese... Just master class grub. Even the chips! like come on! the chips! Its an hour drive but will certainly be back. read more

If you are a Texas BBQ purist then you probably will be dissatisfied just because people love to say stuff like "it's good but it ain't Texas BBQ". But this place is approximate 2000 miles away from Texas so it will do. It's just legit BBQ. Nothing trendy or fancy. Just good BBQ. Nice sized portions and a decent amount to choose from. It's not a big place and it's a little outside of town but this isn't a highly populated or even a touristy area so even on a nice summer weekend it's not busy. There are a about a dozen seats inside and a couple of tables outside. The restaurant is clean and well kept. I suppose by default it would be considered a dive. But it's the cleanest dive this side of the Mississippi. Service is direct and friendly. The sandwiches come with a side of homemade potato chips which are perfectly crispy. The sides are decent. The mac and cheese is ok but I have yet to find a BBQ joint anywhere (including Texas) that has outstanding Mac N cheese. True rating is 4.1. I rounded it up to 5 stars mostly because the few other choices for food in Middleburgh isn't anything special or interesting. I also feel that BBQ is like pizza. A few days ago my husband and I had a surprising and delicious experience. We were driving through NY on our way home to RI and literally stumbled on this incredible bbq restaurant. Feeling peckish as we drove through Middleburgh, we pulled over and walked the town a bit. Unfortunately the restaurant choices we could see left something to be desired, so we pulled out the phone and did a quick search. Up came High On The Hog, just a short drive away. We ordered the half rack of St. Louis style ribs, the Texas burger, and the Summertime Coleslaw. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and delicious. Real "low and slow" cooking, as advertised. The burger was one of the best I've had in my life. Beautiful sear, perfectly medium rare with lovely smoked Gouda and their amazing house bbq sauce. Homemade chips on the side. Coleslaw was just the way we like it, not too much Mayo, a little sweet, really tasting of fresh cabbage and summer. Wish we lived closer, so we could go every week. As it is, we will go out of our way to travel to Middleburgh again soon. read more

High on the Hog BBQ Co offers a variety of BBQ options, from their Saint Louis style Ribs to Smoked Mac n cheese topped with Pulled pork and Bacon. (I have included a menu pic) Their is a large table on the right side upon entering with some 4 tops scattered about the rest of the space. An order counter backed by an open kitchen fills the back half of the space. There are two round tables outside for outdoor dining. We've eaten here a few times over the past few years and despite their hole in the wall location, high on the hog bbq has some of the best bbq around. A simple menu can assure you that their food is fresh and cooked with care. They host some live music here on occasion as well which just adds to that homey feel...theres nothing like a comfortable atmosphere and some good food. We will keep being regular customers here and definitely recommend them to anyone passing through or any locals that just haven't been there yet. read more

The best bbq I've ever had. Shared a "platter." $30 for a more than ample dinner for two hungry adults. Comes with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, boiled potatoes, slaw and 2 toasted buns. An amazing value, the quality is sensational. The brisket was so well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Moist and tender. Recently I went back and ordered the smack as usual (I live close), and it was much smaller portions. I only ordered the normal (SMACK, it's amazing try it!!) and if offered a larger portion, I would have purchased more. It was amazing as usual but I expected the usual larger amount. Driving from Howe Caverns, I asked Siri if there was BBQ near me and clicked the first option that popped up on CarPlay. Since this spot was nearby we decided to check it out. They have a simple menu of bbq classics (ribs, brisket, pulled pork, smoked Mac 'n cheese, salt potatoes, baked beans) all reasonable priced and pretty good. The ribs are more fall off the bone than I'd like, but very moist with a great sauce. I'm quite positive they are oven made, but did have a good smoke flavor. Pulled pork had just the right pull, served on a great bun with sauce on the side... perfect. They make their own potato chips to order and they're out of this world. The smoked Mac n cheese was awesome, and I loved the beans. This is not the kind of southern bbq that screams authentic. It is, however, delicious. Great service. Called ahead for pick up on our way to Howe Cavern Motel. Good thing we did. As with every good bbq place, they sell out. Ordered what they had left of the ribs and brisket and some sides. They held on to their last bit of stuff till right before closing for us when they easily could have sold it to walk-ins. Their food is delicious, a little pricey but you get what you pay for. Really good meat and ribs and all their specials are excellent the place is very small only has about six tables best time is in the summer when you could go out and eat. Once I was there and they had these two young boys playing oldies on their guitars and their voices were really great and so enjoyable I only got to catch them that day, they seem to have some sort of entertainment there on Sundays some old men playing hillbilly music that sounds good for about one song and then you wish you could leave because it's too loud and you get a headache. Usually the wife is the only waitress once in awhile I had noticed a young fellow who was very nice and polite take your order and you got everything you wanted. Very good Cooks the owner rents should get a bigger place he would do much better although he does do shows out of his food trailer high on the hog. If you like BBQ this is a great local spot to hit after hiking nearby Vroman's Nose. Easy to find, casual, with super friendly owners. Portions are generous. Pulled pork and brisket among the best I've ever had, at least as good as what's served at some highly regarded places in Memphis, Nashville, Louisville. Sauce is on the side so no gloppy mess. The homemade potato chips were a bit salty for my taste but hey, I came for the BBQ! read more
