High Velocity used to be one of our favorite sports bars, but it has taken a serious turn for the worse. I understand everything has been affected by COVID, but crazy expensive drinks and a very limited menu unfortunately puts High Velocity on the "has been" list. It may work for you if you are staying at the resort on business and expensing your meals and drinks, but for everyone else there are much better options. $30 for a glass of wine, $9 for a draft beer and $20 for a burger is a bit much considering the food is not all that good. read more

High Velocity sports bar is a sports fans dream! The meandering projection shows a constant stream of all the sports games on TV. I love their lively vibe and energy during a good game. The drink prices are on the steep side but are good. Each of the three bars at this hotel has their own food, beer, wine and cocktail menus. While this a full bar I would stick to the wine and beer selection at this location. During our stay we ordered quesadillas and a hummus plate. Both dishes were great and were generous portions. I can frankly not remember being in such an opulent sports bar screaming at the TV for a good hour and a half willing on my boys in blue to victory. I was staying at the resort and we ventured into the bar after we checked in for a Bloody Mary. We were greeted by a prompt and smiling Liz. She was very attentive and fun to hang with. We ordered the Calamari which was some of the best we have had. And the Mary's were on point and spicy, she asked how spicy we wanted to have them made. The next day I wandered in while the wifey went for her spa day. I settled down and had a couple of beers with Suzi. Suzi was as awesome as Liz. Very friendly, attentive, funny and very personable. She provided me with great service and the manager on duty was equally interested in my well being. He noticed my Chelsea shirt and we talked about footie and all things premiere league related. He is a Liverpool fan and I had mentioned that the wife and I were going to head back to Austin to catch the Chelsea game at 10am. He said he would be happy to open up at 10am and put the game on for us if we stayed. Mr. Cunningham was indeed the icing on the cake as far as we are concerned with High Velocity. We got there early this morning and was greeted by a smiling Suzi welcoming us back and we were able to watch the entire game at our leisure. They were setting up for the Superbowl today, which looked like they would be packed for. Remember your mother warning you about your eyes being bigger than your stomach? Well at High Velocity that's a prerequisite. Before you even get in the door your peepers are locked in on the 120 foot HD screen that runs the length of the bar like a ribbon. From its mood lighting to its comfortable seating this place is where the modern sports fan wants to be. The menu is simple but offers a bit for everybody. My personal favorite is the cheese burger sliders. One piece of advice, if you want to watch something on the giant panel, ask to sit with your back to the wall. If all of those seats are taken there are still plenty of screens all around the bar to see what you're interested in. Lastly, since it is a resort there is a pretty mixed clientele. From families with kids to the single types, the crowd runs the gamut.. That said there is so much going on with the screens that you rarely notice anything else. read more

120ft screens? Check. Full bar with some of the best "tenders in town? Check. Damn good apps and food? Check. Reasonable service? *buzzer* Timely seating? *buzzer* Ease of in and out? *buzzer* We went on a Spurs game night/Saturday. There were four couples, with about an 8:15pm check in for a table. By 10:20pm, we had watched at least 5 groups get seated before us (not sure what the reserve situation is?) and observed at least two of the very large viewing booths being "held" by ONE person each. Six conversations with the hostess staff finally scored us a table in the very back with our own small screen, and a "somewhat" view of the spectacularness of large screens. I really hate to ding a place based solely on service - but this is supposed to be an upscale environment, and I have to set expectations accordingly. If this was my local bar, I would expect the lack in consideration and treatment. These guys should go back and have a hot wash each weekend on how well they did with their patrons. Okay, upside stuff? The chicken nachos are a MUST!! I don't know what they did to that chicken, but I was making some slurpy, moany, throaty noises that were "When Harry Met Sally" reminiscent. Also, BBQ. They have a buffet on the weekend nights (not sure about weekdays) that's a great deal, and allows you to try it all. THEN there is the bartender, Michael, who made me the most amazing Texas Tea I've ever had. It's not on the menu, so ask for it. There are some other lovely concoctions that tempted me, but I was afraid were too sweet. TIP: If you're local, valet and tell them - you get up to 3 hours for $10. Parking is a biznatch, but if you do park far, start walking and look for a golf cart - they are out there picking up and dropping off. read more

My wife and I were staying at the Marriott and decided to have a nice meal and watch some football. However, once arriving we were told there was a 2 hour wait just to be seated. I've never heard of that kind of a wait anywhere I've ever been that doesn't require a reservation. On top of that I looked at the menu and saw that all good was more expensive then ball park food. Don't waist your time and just eat before you go. Also rude staff but I'm not going to hold that against the person at the front desk because I'm sure she was getting bad customers telling her about the wait time. read more

Avoid the margaritas because they are more expensive than the 18 oaks steakhouse, and they are watered down with lots of ice. The fried pickles were good and I would recommend those. It took a little while to get our order placed: we had the artichoke-crab dip to start, and I had the Philly cheese steak, my husband had the mushroom Swiss burger, and my kids just had some fries. The artichoke dip was pretty good, but both the cheese steak and the burger were way too salty. I couldn't even eat half of my meal. Then to top it all off, we were totally neglected by our server! I'd understand if it was packed, but there was hardly anyone there; there was really no excuse for making us wait for our check for so long. When we first arrived to the resort- we were famished. We wanted to try Cibolo moon due to the rave reviews- only to find it mysteriously closed during lunch time for some unknown reason. So, we decided to swing over to high velocity. The atmosphere is fun, the screens are amazing- the food and service- however, were awful. Despite being next to empty- and having 8 wait staff- it took them almost 20 minutes to greet us. Do not even get me started on how long it took to get drinks ordered. Once I start thinking of the rest I just get mad. To top it off- the order was wrong and the prices were ridiculous. Fun spot in a limiting handful of dining options near the JW Marriott Hill Country (if you don't have a car on-site). Generally, however, the TVs are better than the food. Over the course of a few days, my favorites were the calamari appetizer (very nicely cooked, not chewy) and the fish tacos. Duds were the seared tuna salad, which had virtually no remnants of a dressing to add flavor, and had sort of a weird salad-on-top-of-a-salad concept. My coworker and I had a snack here one evening while in town for a conference. We sat at the bar so we could watch whatever games were on that night. We split an order of chicken wings with two sauces: Humming and BBQ. Both flavors were good. And I always look the carrots and celery and blue cheese dressing. For a resort of this caliber, the food they serve at High Velocity is down right nasty. It's not often that I say, "I'd wish we would have gone to Hooters for food", after a nice round of golf.....but after eating the chicken less wings and cold nachos, this was exactly the case. I was hoping to find a new sports bar to hang out at. We decided to stop in here after checking out the Holiday lights and decorations at the JW. We were seated at a booth, and had great views of the Spurs game on the projection screens. The service issues started when we the booth we were at was not fully ready and cleaned. Once drinks and appetizers came, we had to go to another table to get some silverware for ourselves. We also waited to get some small plates so we could share the appetizers. Our drinks also ran dry. It appeared they only had one server for over half of the floor on a Saturday night with no help. The food was good. We had the Philly cheese steak and burgers, and everyone though food was good. I don't mind paying higher prices for a place like this at the JW since food was good, but they should step up and make service a priority if they are going to charge the higher prices. I know the folks at JW have always taken much better care of us when staying at the resort.. Had service been up to standards would have given them 4 stars. FYI - There were also lots of kids running around in the bar, so be aware if you are looking for an actual adult bar to hang out at. Probably just the nature of being in a resort hotel. read more
