Great little local establishment in the Highland area of St Paul. We were there for lunch, but the bakery is an excellent extension. Service was attentive and friendly. Menu is a nice collection of sandwiches and plates, a good sized "breakfast all day" menu offers a nice set of tempting choices. We've been there numerous times and always had a very nice breakfast. The atmosphere and service is very good. But I can't say the same for their lunch items. We had a Montecristo sandwich and it was gray looking and had very little flavor and taste microwaved. The bacon cheeseburger was also very blah tasting. My friends and I stopped in for lunch after Pickleball on a Friday at the nearby rec center. The restaurant is within walk-in distance so we decided why not? We were pleasantly surprised with the good quality service, food and the comfy homey feel of the restaurant, and wonderful service. The food was outstanding. My wife had eggs Benedict and mine was Bisquits and Country Gravy and I swear it's been a good 6 years at least for me and I am so glad I came. AMY was an amazing server and she did very well and very polite. She served us with a smile and was a darling. The atmosphere was amazing and not too loud. We had a great time here for breakfast Saturday morning! This is a local home cooked sort of joint and even though they have a good size restaurant, when we showed up - every table was full! Come prepared to wait a couple minutes for a table during peak times and treat the staff with grace as it was clear they were working hard. This is a place best suited for smaller groups or families up to 6, once again - busy! The food was excellent though and came fast even at peak time. They have a wide variety of non-alcoholic beverages available as well as a bakery case at the front. I loved my French toast and my friends loved their breakfasts as well. After our food delivered we were visited once and I saw how everything was. I still had not noticed that it was only one piece of pumpernickel because I was eating my fruit. We came in here on Memorial Day on the way to the airport and were so thankful that we did. They feed us quickly and got us to-go utensils and containers to take with us on our travels. They have gluten free French toast which was excellent - they asked if I wanted it with cinnamon (which I did) and I would recommend (it wasn't too sweet - just perfect). I visit this cafe quite often because it's relatively close to my home and the food is very good, especially the breakfasts. The wait staff is on point and the kitchen, even on very busy days, never keeps a hungry person waiting. This cafe is a little more on the spendy side but it is shown in the cafe's food quality and service. The baked goods are beyond good...they'll put 15 lbs on you just eating one of their caramel or cinnamon rolls (or both!). However, here's why I give them an "OK" rating. There is a hostess, Bertha (I think, I never got her name), wears glasses, older lady who needs to keep her political and social commentary shut off at work. I know we all have varying degrees of beliefs but the last thing I need is indigestion because of an employee spouting off her opinions loudly and without discretion. That day she was commenting on the local newspaper's quality of stories and then soon went into a mini political diatribe about what's wrong with our current administration and how the previous administration wouldn't have allowed whatever she found necessary to share rather loudly with one of the other patrons. I don't want her to think she isn't free to share her opinions but when she's on the clock she needs to be mindful that there are those that don't come in to hear her and her soapbox. We come in to relax, eat and enjoy a few minutes of peace and quiet. I hope she will see this and clean it up. Thank you. read more

They have fresh baked good and incredible egg dishes and pastries (including homemade pie) which can be eaten at any meal. my first time dining at Highland Cafe. I'm not a person that likes to complain and this is the first review I've ever written. there were 2 of us, dining at 2:00. We knew the cafe closed at 3:00. The first thing noticed was my glass of water was very dirty at the top. I nicely asked if he'd take it away as I didn't really want water anyway. We both ordered coffee, as we were chilly. The coffee was not hot, but waiter had put a "hot pot" of extra coffee on the table. I added this to our lukewarm cups and it made them even cooler! Finally got his attention and he did bring us 2 cups of hot coffee, but never offered more or another hot pot. The service was a bit slow for our sandwiches and as we waited i smelled ammonia very strongly....turned around and a lady was mopping the floor behind us. Then the waiter started vacuuming right by the tables at 2:30. Half an hour before closing ! We finished eating and thought maybe he would have taken our coffees off the bill, but nope. we basically got one cup each. Customer service and the smells and noises of cleaning while eating were reasons I will never go back to this eatery. read more

I am in the middle of a huge move and decided to treat myself to one of Highland's amazing cinnamon buns! As he boxed this nice soft giant bun he then said," that will be $3.85." YIKES! What happened to the $2.50 price about a year plus ago????? My mom made these using Betty Crocker's cook book baking them with butter. SERVICE Kind of weird and slow. We came here after we landed and most other states move slower than NY so that doesn't surprise me but this was unbelievable. When we first sat down I was asked if I wanted coffee and I said yes- it took approximately 10 minutes to get my coffee and it was only because I repeated it to a second person. FOOD Pretty good. Their banana nut pancake is HUGE, so if you order it be prepared, I ordered the single and couldn't finish it. It had real banana in it which was great. I also ordered their cinnamon french toast and it was okay. Not too bad but I was not wowed. For some reason it was kind of dry. When you look at the photo DRINKS Coffee was not good. We have been searching for a new fish and chips place, and saw they have all you can eat fish and chips on Fridays, so we decided to check it out. The fish was good. Nice and crispy and the fish is firm and fresh. It took me a bit to get used to their homemade tartar sauce, but it is pretty good as well. Meal also comes with cole slaw. That was not my favorite. I think it's a good deal and it's good fish so I recommend it. Their other items look pretty good as well, I can't wait to try it! We went on a Friday (obviously) and it was not busy at all. It was between 6p and 8p. I think there were 4 other tables of customers in there. Parking is hit or miss. They do have a lot but it can get busy around dinner time because there aren't a *ton* of spots and there are a lot of other restaurants in the same strip. Definitely recommended. read more

I ended up here recently for breakfast after waiting for an inordinate amount of time for food that never came at another establishment that was having their "grand opening" that day. Service was friendly and quick. Coffee was flavorless. After I ordered the Farmer's Scramble from the breakfast menu (and not seeing that I had a choice of meat to add to it, nor was a choice of meat offered by the server), I saw the daily specials posted on a different card on the table - if I'd seen this card earlier, I would have ordered something from it and saved myself a few dollars by doing so. As it was, the Farmer's Scramble was good, albeit a huge plate of food. I ate about half of it, and got a Styrofoam container to take the remainder home with me. The whole wheat toast was o.k., and the house-made strawberry jam that came with the toast was so light in flavor as to not taste at all like strawberry. read more

The food tasted quite yummy and they have a ton of other breakfast and lunch options as well. The aesthetic reminded me of being in cozy home. They did not engage with me as much (I was alone and focused on my computer) but from what I saw, I love how the workers seem to treat their guests more like family than customers. BONUS - they have free wifi! So I actually spent about an hour and a half finishing up some homework and the staff never kicked me out or asked me to leave which I found really great. So this quickly became my favorite place for breakfast but after the last two visits I'm beginning to rethink it. The yelps reviews drew me in with a siren call about caramel roll and how they're the best in the Twin cities. That's true to a point. A. You have to be able to get one. They tend to sell out fast. B. Make they serve them to you warm. Room temperature they're almost stale tasting. Good enough but not remarkable. And not worth a trip. I find the food to be good but inconsistent about temperature. The first couple of times my food was too hot to eat fresh from the kitchen. And the second to the last time it was glacial. Today a grab bag of fine. My eggs were an odd mix of too hot and cold. And not in a way you would think. The top layer of my scrambled eggs was piping hot while the under layer was cold. I have driven by this place many a time and finally decided to stop by today. My parents and I were looking for a nice place to grab a quick bite and I thought about this place after hearing people rave about it for years. Dining room is bigger than I thought it would be. Lots of big booths and tables. Decent sized menu with breakfast served all day which is a plus considering I love breakfast fare any time of the day. Ordered the Eggs Commodore with sausage which was really good. I love sausage patties and this one was just the right thickness with the right amount of hollendaise sauce. Mom ordered one of the cinnamon rolls which looked really good. She said it was very tasty. It came with a huge dollop of whipped butter. Dad ordered a a single buttermilk pancake which he remarked was really tasty. Service was decent. Nice looking cakes, desserts waiting to entice you as you walk in.
