Warning before going for a wax: They burnt my eyelid the day before an engagement party. The technician left the wax on my eye way too long and I had to ice it when I got home because of the pain. I was texting with the manager and they did not charge me the 14$ for the eyebrow wax. This is appreciated, but really does not have make up for the pain of burning my face or the burden of having to attend an event with a burnt eye. On the phone the manager told me "don't worry, it will turn brown and come off." Thankfully, it did not scar. I liked this place before because it was close to my place, everyone is nice, the salon itself is nice, but I won't be returning to avoid the risk. Great nail salon for walk-ins. There is usually no wait if you go on a weekday. I usually get pedicures, gel, and dip powder. Historically, I would have only given 3 stars a year or two ago, because their dip manicures used to lift at the edges. However, they have really improved their dip manicures - not sure if they got a better formula or if they mastered their dip technique, but it stays for 4 weeks with no lifting! Called the day before to schedule an appointment. She reassured me no appointment was needed and confirmed they open at 9:30am. Arrived @9:25am. It's 10am and no one is here. This is not how you run a business. Finally, just 1 person arrives past opening time citing "traffic," and she helps the customer who comes in AFTER us. I told her I really needed to leave by 10:30 to make it to work on time but she didn't speak English, so we just helplessly waited for her as she helped the other customer who come in after us first... :( 30 minutes later, a bunch of other employees come strolling in... if you want to open at 10, open at 10. Do not inconvenience customers and say you open at 9:30 with one person working. April contacted me and bribed me to take down the review. She said she'd only offer a discount if I "remove the review." The business should want to make amends for poor service and give the discount regardless, not tell me to take down the review first to receive the discount. Plus she calls me at 10pm on my cell to try to talk! The whole experience has left a really bad taste in my mouth. They should've offered a refund or discount from the beginning if they cared, but they only offered a refund after I publicly posted a bad, but honest review on Yelp. April" Hi Mira! This is April and I just talked with you on the phone. I know it was all our fault. No excuses. I really do apologize. If you could please remove or update the review, we will refund you $40 back to your bank account today. " this IS BRIBERY. She's telling me I MUST take down the review in order to receive a discount. Any good ethical business would WANT to make things right for the customer after unnecessarily inconveniencing us. She also called me out of the blue at 10pm. Who calls a customer at 10pm? Incredibly inconsiderate. She claims she had a right to call a customer at 10pm bc I messaged the business on yelp. That is not texting to a personal cellphone. It still gives ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO CALL A CUSTOMER at 10pm---business hours are typicallly til 5. It's very RUDE. I do not recommend their unethical business practices. Obviously, they only have all these 5 star reviews b/c they BRIBE their customers to take down bad reviews. "As we discussed earlier this morning, whenever you remove your review, we'll refund for you right away. " They still have yet to refund me, even though said they would. They refuse to do so until I write them a good review. I've never witnessed a business be this unethical... They need to learn how to treat their customers and do better. BE ON TIME. KEEP APPOINTMENTS. AND DO NOT BRIBE THE CUSTOMER TO FORCE THEM TO WRITE A GOOD REVIEW. I'd update the review if they would be honest and make an effort to do better, but they care more about their "Google review"/"yelp" image than actually making things right with the customer. ALso, she makes it seem like she did an extra favor by having her 4 techs who were not doing anything (and were 30 minutes late!) come and work on my mom and me. Every time i come there, they always have a tech do the mani if we're doing a pedi. This is nothing special/extra. I really loved this salon and drove all the way from South Austin to come here until April lied to me about the appointment I made the morning before, called me at 10pm, and BRIBED me that she would only refund me for taking down the review. A good ethical business should WANT to make their customer better off than before, especially if they experienced troubles as a result of their own faults (late employees, forgetting to write down the appointment, which April admitted to.) I really do feel like.a discount/refund is warranted. Also, April says i'm "threatening" their business when I am just writing an honest review of my experience and interactions with her. read more

I called ahead of time and set up an appointment for a pedicure. I am not sure if it was necessary as they do also accept walk-ins. I however always like to secure an appointment in advance. I was able to score parking near the door which was great since it was particular off and on rainy evening. Upon arrival, I picked out my color and was told I could sit in the pedicure chair. They also offer drinks here including wine. Overall the tech did a great job with my nails and massage. When I was leaving one of the staff members took off the toe separator and accidentally smudged one of the nails. I've been going to this salon every month for the past 2 years or so. But I might stop going here because of such an unpleasant experience I had this time. I usually make an appointment with my go-to nail tech because I don't like being randomly assigned to someone I don't like. But this time, I was switched to a lady in the midle of the process who was very rude and disrespectful to me the whole time. This lady with thick eyebrow tattoos gave an attitude that she was in a hurry and wanted to get things done ASAP. She was applying things so carelessly without even noticing the mistakes she made. And everytime I pointed out her mistake or made a request regarding my design, she responded with the most rude "Okay okay" as if she wanted me to shut up, and presumably talked shit about me to her coworkers in Vietnamese, which felt like an insult. Lady if you are reading this, even if we don't speak your language, it's pretty easy to know when you are talking shit about customers. Sadly her skills were poor, so it took her such a long time to finish the design despite how desperately she wanted to get things done fast. I had to sit in the salon 2 hours and 25 minutes today just. for. my. nails. I had plans later that day, which I had to reschedule because of this. I didn't receive any apologies for the delay nor the rude and impolite attitude the lady displayed. It may be one of a few dozens of customers that day for you guys, but for someone who gets their nails done, it's an experience that lasts the entire month or even longer. This place is clean and a great place to go if you want quality work. It's a bit pricey here than some other places but it's worth it if you care more about the nail work. My nail result was clean and impressive. My friend and I got the pedicure and manicure on a weekend and the environment is quiet and chill. It's been a while since I've been to a nail salon, like years. I don't usually get my nails done professionally so this was a treat for me. I don't really understand the pricing on the menu from Yelp pictures. They didn't show me the pricing and menu either. They just asked what I wanted. I wouldn't have known if I didn't do a bunch of research on dip/powder/acrylics. Maybe they assume I knew about it all. I came here with a friend and she called for an appointment. When we went, it was not that busy but towards the end, all the desks were full and it felt like they were a bit nervous and want to get those customers situated. The pedicure chairs were pretty open though. There seem to be a lot of walk ins so an appointment is not a must but could help. Pedicure: got the most basic option which is the $30 or $35 for 35 mins. I don't remember really getting a massage though but my friend got a little bit of massage. You get what you pay for, it's nothing special, didn't feel special or anything. I did regular nail polish. I don't think I would come here for pedicure specifically. You get to sit on the massage chair while getting a pedicure but the lady didn't show me until a little bit later. They use a blue plastic for their water bin as a cover which is nice for sanitary reasons. Nails: Although, I think we ordered the manicure, I think I really only got the nails service. I got the dip powder french tip nails. What the technician did was powder for the base and then gel for the french tip and top coat. This is probably the best part mainly because of how great the guy did my nails. The result was very pleasing. He shaped it really nicely at first but I think he filed more than I'd like after all the powder was done. I feel like my skin a bit more exposed than it was first filed before the powder set in. They didn't give me a hand massage or put on lotion but they did for my friend. So your experience varies by technician. At the same time, I might've not had such great french tip if I had another person, I can't say. My nails look just like the inspiration photo and I'm very happy with how well he did my nails. Too bad none of the people introduce me their names. Only my friend's pedicure person introduced herself. I like how they make sure you like how the nails are filed and if you like the design after doing one. So they check along the way to make sure you like it. There's good communication with getting your nails done here. Free parking: There's a garage around the corner of Bennu which is right next to the nail salon or there's limited parking right in front of the building. Current deals: If you write a review on yelp or google when you check out, you can get 5% off. All students get 10% at all times. First time customers from Mon - Thurs get 20% off. What could be improved: I showed the lady a picture of the french dip nail and asked her how much, she said it's dip and it's $58 but when I was checking out it was $63. There's a lack of price transparency here and I hope they let the customers know exactly if they had asked before the service. I still don't really understand the pricing because when I mentioned it at the checkout, the guy said extra $15 for the rounded white tip. It doesn't make sense to me but because it's a $5 difference than what I agreed to, I just let it go, but I think that portion of the experience can be improved. I recommend this place for the fine craft of their nail work (just make sure you're okay with their price) and how clean/quiet it is. The people there don't bother you that much or talk too much. Highland Nails is my favorite Austin-area nail salon PERIOD. The salon is pristine and clean, and I've never had a bad service done here. I currently live in Brooklyn, and will come back home just so Danny can give me a dip manicure. April is so talented with nail art, and can create nearly anything. You never feel rushed, and they always ask you many times if you're liking the length, shape, color etc. during your service. They're above and beyond attentive, and even offer a points system for future discounts. For dip, I always go to Danny and he does an amazing job. I've been able to grow out my nails due to his meticulous work, and i've been able to keep my natural nail length long ever since. As for any service, don't be afraid to be clear about what you're looking for--if you don't want your cuticles cut, say it. If it's not turning out how you're liking, nail polish is thick, etc. say it. And be clear and patient. Service industry folks are not mind readers--don't go in expecting they know exactly what you want. They are ultra accommodating, care about quality, and want you to be happy when you walk out. I love the team here at Highland Nails. And I love seeing my fellow Vietnamese community in Austin grow. I appreciate everyone at Highland and their amazing work, especially during a pandemic. I removed my previous dip and got dip with gel polish so it took quite a bit of time. I was there for about 1hr and 30-45minutes, and usually I'm only in a nail salon for an hour. But I didn't mind that much because she took her time and cared for each nail instead of rushing. She also trimmed my cuticles and did a hand massage afterwards which was unexpected but I'm grateful. I've gone to Highland Nails & Spa a few times and have had pleasant experiences. This was my go to nail salon until my last visit. I went on Saturday as a walk-in and was quickly seated. The man that did my nails was very rough. He was moving quick and carelessly. When using the drill bit to clean up the nail, he ended up cutting me. I was shocked when I saw him wipe off my blood with his finger and continue using the drill bit, then his brush to dust off the powder and a nail polish that goes on top of the dip on my unsanitized nail that was an open wound. After he was done, he asked me to wash my hands and then finally used alcohol and a cotton swab to clean my nail. This has been the first time ever a salon has cut my cuticle. The staff was very apologetic and did offer me a 20% discount due to this inconvenience. I was worried about my cut since the drills do not seem sanitized but I could be wrong. The area where the drill bits and other nail materials are kept were dusty, which is what leads me to this conclusion. The nail clipper was not in a sterilization pouch nor did I see it sanitized before I was seated and it used on me. While I have had good experiences at this salon, the way the nail tech continued on without first sanitizing the wound and then proceeded to use the tools on top of an open, bleeding wound was very off putting. My nails were well done (except after a few days the cut on my cuticle still seems irritated and red). read more
