Great optometrist there. Convenient location. Not all of the staff is particularly friendly, but they act competitive with other stores, including being reluctant to give you prescriptions, which is incompatible with Massachusetts law. I've never had this problem elsewhere, including getting pupillary distance or measurements that would allow me to get glasses elsewhere if I want. It's petty. Also much more expensive than some other places that make equally good lenses with good frame choices, and they don;t take insurance which is of course their prerogative. I hope to follow the optometrist elsewhere when they leave. read more

They are following the protocols for Covid very carefully so you feel completely safe going in and trying on frames. I had a great experience and sent my husband and friend. Highland Opticians is possibly the best eyewear store in the Boston area. Prices are not cheap but you get superior service which is key in eyewear. There is an in-house optometrist, Dr. Shuer, who is top-flight and excellent with children. The proprietors have been in the business forever and are extremely expert in all aspects of lens crafting and eyewear. They have an extensively equipped lab in-store. Many lesser stores go to them to get complicated work done. The eyewear selection is upscale and traditional: Brooks Brothers, Zeiss, etc. Sunglass lines include Maui Jim, Reptile and Porsche. They have some ski masks and diving masks and other miscellaneous eyewear. Update: they no longer have Zeiss apparently and lately their lines have featured fewer brand names, possibly because it is harder to make money off of brand name frames, I don't know. I recently had to return a pair of no-name frames because of defective manufacturing. Even though the frames were 3 years old, they had no trouble replacing them at no cost. read more

I wish there were a way to convey what a fantastic company Highland Opticians is. I have one working pair of glasses. The ear piece came off. It's a problem, because I'm not going into public buildings these days. The folks at Highland Opticians let me park outside their offices as they stepped out to take my glasses. A couple of hours later, they'd fixed them, and again came to the front of the store to hand them back to me. They charged me nothing. During a pandemic, it's incredibly reassuring to know that there are folks in our local business community who are ethical people and great neighbors. Highland Opticians earned a customer for life. I just had a VERY FRUSTRATING experience with this optical store. After spending $750 on new glasses and getting my eyes examined there to obtain an updated prescription to purchase these new glasses, THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME A COPY OF MY FULL PRESCRIPTION INCLUDING PD. I had just read a Boston Globe article about how typically optometrists don't give you your full prescription so you cannot buy glasses online. (Article dated 3/21/17 "What Your Optometrist Doesn't Want You To Know." ) MA OPTOMETRISTS ARE LEGALLY REQUIRED TO GIVE YOU YOUR PD NUMBER WHEN ASKED. Since I was spending a boatload of money for new glasses, I felt morally entitled, not just legally entitled, to request this information. So when they gave offered me a copy of my prescription, I said yes I would like a copy and I would like it to include my PD number on it. The optician (not the optometrist) basically said no, claiming liability reasons and other nonsense reasons. I then went back to the optometrist who had just examined me and she said she doesn't take this measurement as a general practice, and that she leaves it up to the optician to take it. And since I was no longer in her examine room, my appointment had technically ended a few minutes ago, that she would not be able to take this measurement. (It had already been taken by the optician anyway... but she would not release it.) So I was in a catch 22, where the optometrist is intentionally not taking this essential measurement (having the optician do it instead), so she that she can't be legally required to release it. VERY SNEAKY. This is BAD BUSINESS if you ask me, especially to customers dropping $750 on one lousy pair of glasses. read more

Very disappointed with the way they dealt with my insurance. The salesman got a bit agitated by my questions about the pricing. I ended up walking out without a purchase, even though I loved the glasses. Luckily the next place I tried had the exact same glasses for significantly LESS money. So glad I walked out! read more

My family has been going here for 20 years. Great selection of sunglasses and eyeglasses. Prices are general 20-35% lower that Pearle, Cambridge Eye Docs, and LensCrafters. I brought my mom here for glasses. They were patient, kind, understanding, and wonderful to deal with in every way. They genuinely care. It's not 'customer service' - it's being human and genuine and having an interest and curiosity in others. They like people. We returned a year later for a minor adjustment - no charge. I can't say enough good things about the service I received. I had a new prescription, but wanted to keep the same rimless frame. I visited five big chain locations and all of them told me it wasn't possible. Highland Opticians didn't have any problems fulfilling my request. They gave me several options, explained pros and cons for each and in the end met my price target, which was important to me. They even replaced the lenses while I was waiting, in less than half an hour, so I didn't have to be without glasses even for a day. I will never use another provider for my optical needs. read more

Rude and overpriced. Refused to provide PD measurement after we dropped over $300 in their store. We won't be back.

I don't know if their prices are high or if all good eyeglasses cost money. But whatever I spend at this store, I get more than my money's worth. I always need help sorting through the frames to select the best pair for me. And then I need adjustments whenever something happens to my glasses (minor accidents, a fall). They can special order frames that they don't carry, in case you want cable temples (a rubber piece curves behind your ears to hold the glasses on well), or whatever you want. I don't live in Newton, but they are on the T and easy to get to by car. read more

After having a bad experience at the Target Optical department, I went here to look at frames. They had a huge selection, and the salespeople were very helpful and let you browse without being in your way. When I eventually narrowed my choices, the salesperson gave me an honest opinion about which frames looked better and actually suggested the cheaper frames. There was also no pressure to upgrade to special lenses, and they were very upfront about what additional things would cost. I will definitely be back here for all my future glasses purchases. read more

After our transaction, I asked some questions about my glasses, with which I have not been happy. Incredible service! My Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses were broken with screw and lens popped out, and I've had difficulty getting this brand fixed before (teaches me to spend more than $10 on sunglasses!). After trying superglue and taking them to another optician, I had just about given up hope when I saw the excellent reviews here and brought them in. The friendly man who helped me fixed them within minutes! I couldn't believe it. Free of charge! From what I could see, they had an extensive selection of regular frames as well as sunglasses.
