Last week there were four new students and so she's willing to go out of her way to start at 1:30 this week to teach us the basic steps in Hula. They dance to about 6-8 songs so it's pretty crazy to remember the steps on all of them. The ladies who are there now have been there for about two years so they are well-grounded. Yoyo provides the hula skirts and leis too. They have been asked to perform in a church function and personal events.

"Senior Companions are volunteers age 55 and over who make a difference by providing assistance and friendship to adults with special needs. Senior Companions help these adults remain independent in their homes instead of having to move to more costly institutional care. Senior Companions give families or professional caregivers a much needed time off from their duties, run errands, and often provide friendship for their clients. Senior Companions offer adults with special needs contact with the world outside of their homes, making their lives less isolated. Along the way, Senior Companions find out that few things feel as good as knowing they are needed. Senior Companion Volunteers have a regularly, weekly day schedule with each client. Among other activities, they provide friendship and companionship; assist with running basic errands; accompany clients to social activities; alert doctor and family members to potential problems, and provide respite to family caregivers. I dealt with them through some "not so great" times meaning, rent was late being paid to them. They never treated me less than, were never unkind or judgmental. I was grateful for it. Tangie, had the accounts all accurate and accessible whenever I asked. It really can't get better with their mutual respect, professionalism and humanity when dealing with issues financial and emotional. The community is inclusive, friendly and protecting. They don't have meals here or many activities. The only activities they have are volunteers that come out. Mostly Jehovah's Witness bible study and sometimes bingo. They don't have many of the amenities that they advertise and the ones they do have you have to pay for. Like wifi, parking spot, cable, & laundry. All are extra $$$$$ The rent is super expensive especially for this area of SB and all the apartments are cockroach infested. It's really sad because these seniors deserve better! So beware that you aren't fooled by the pics and their website.

I've been coming to the YMCA consistently since my son was about six months old, he's four now! At the time, our income was low, but the Y offered scholarships, which made it possible for us to join. We received a 50% scholarship, and it truly was a blessing. It gave me time to work out, take classes, and just have a little "me time" while my baby was safe and cared for. Now that my son is in preschool, I have the flexibility to come at any time, and I love that freedom. The childcare hours used to be limited to mornings (around 8 to 12) and a bit in the afternoon (around 3:30), but now I just come whenever I can. I usually do my own workouts since the group class times don't always fit my schedule, but there's such a great variety, swimming, tap, pilates, fusion, and so much more. Another thing I love is the sense of community. I often see friends from church here, and it feels like an extension of that family atmosphere. The staff is generally friendly, though a few could be a bit more personable, but overall, they're helpful and kind. For the value, variety, and community, the YMCA has been such a big part of my life these past few years. I'm so grateful for it, and I can honestly say, I love the Y!
