I give this salon 4 stars because of the service, talent and cute location. This salon is in a brick and beam building on South Street near South Station. Anyone who knows Boston knows this cute neighborhood (great nail salon across the street too)! It's a short walk from South Station and downtown crossing. I came here because of a Groupon and had a partial foil done with Lule. She was great! Very knowledgeable on color (some stylists don't know what they are doing when it comes to color)! She examined my natural blonde and talked through the process of how to achieve the look I wanted. She talked me through it and the results are just what I envisioned. Went in for the 55$ cut and shampoo thru Groupon. When I first arrived there was no greeting or introduction, he sort of just waved me to the chair and started washing my hair. He was very rough with my hair and it didn't feel like he was treating it with care. It felt like he was rushing. When I showed him my reference picture he said he could do it but my hair came out nothing like the picture! It felt like he was chopping my hair instead of being deliberate. At the end of my cut I had to point out hairs that he missed and had to ask him to fix it. I originally asked him for a wolf cut and wanted it shoulder length with lots of layers but when he finished it was too short and didn't have a nice shape at all. The whole cut only took about 25 minutes (including the wash), which I feel is way too short for a cut. He was nice however I felt that he did not pay attention to detail and was not careful or deliberate with his cuts. I honestly wasn't confident that he knew what he was doing. With a name like "Highlight Salon" you'd think they would be good at highlights... WRONG. I recently purchased and redeemed a Groupon (cut, conditioning treatment, full foil highlights, blow-out) for The Highlight Salon Boston. When I purchased I couldn't wait to get my hair done and was filled with excitement. Flash forward to July 13, when I redeemed... When I arrived at the salon I found out Naji would be my stylist, granted I didn't actually know his name until I was leaving. I explained what I wanted done and even showed him photos of my hair from 6 years back (last time I had my hair colored). He was working with Virgin hair, which he has essentially ruined. During the appointment he hardly spoke to me AT ALL. Now, I'm not sure if there is a language barrier or what, but this struck me as odd. My groupon was supposed to include a conditioning treatment and a blow out. The "conditioning treatment" was regular conditioner. He did absolutely nothing special. The blowout? A frizzy straight hair mess. I have naturally very curly hair and was looking forward to a blow out. I didn't get one, but I wasn't too displeased as I hardly ever straighten my hair, so this was still something new. When I got home I noticed my color was off. Very streaky like a tiger, not close enough to my roots, not consistent, etc. I decided to give it a few days and see if with my own styling it looked better. It did, but there were still lots of areas with very bad mistakes. A few days later I called the salon about coming in for a complimentary touch up. A woman answered and said I could come in on the 24th at 4pm. Today I came in for my touch up. When I first arrived a male stylist greeted me. I told him my name and that I had an appointment at 4pm. Shortly after, Naji called me over. He did not remember me AT ALL and claimed he did not color my hair. He also asked me repeatedly if I had called to make the appointment today and stated he did not have any info on it. I told him I called several days ago and was told to come in today at 4pm. He did not remember/admit to coloring my hair until I presented the business card he had hand written his name on and given me at the previous appointment. Anyway, he finally took me to a chair. He NEVER gave me a robe/cloak to protect my clothing. I pointed out my concerns with the problem areas and he argued with me. He even had the audacity to tell me "the color is perfect". The color is FAR from perfect. I repeatedly explained it was streaky, had hard lines, and not what I asked for. Even when l pointed out the exact areas I had concerns with he kept questioning me. He eventually put in 3 foils. JUST THREE. There are so many more problem areas but I was afraid to say more, in fear that it would turn out even worse. The areas he "fixed" look slightly better but there is still far more work that needs to be done. He asked me again at some point during the process when I called. I actually had to get out my phone and show him it was last Friday. Finally, a female stylist told me it was her I spoke to on the phone. At least someone remembered me, I guess! Anyway, after washing out the bleach he started brushing my hair. This man has no idea how to brush or style curly hair. HE STARTED YANKING/BRUSHING AT MY ROOTS. Every stylist knows this is not how you brush hair and it is very damaging. You start at the ends! Then he started blow drying... even though I previously told him I did not want that. Its completely evident that he has no idea how to handle/style curly hair. I left looking like an electrocuted lion. I'm seriously questioning if this man is even licensed, honestly. This whole experience was a complete nightmare. I will now have to visit a new stylist to have all the damage he did repaired. I will never, ever step foot back in the Highlight Salon. I asked for Balayage, which costs $150. What they give you is not a true balayage. They use the "teasing method" and foils, rather than handpainting based on the style and flow of your hair. They didn't ask me about tones, and just asked if I was okay with blonde. The underside of my hair is severely over-processed and WHITE blonde, and doesn't even come close to matching my any other part of my hair. The highlights are chunky and the lines are super harsh - when my hair is up it literally looks like I just have thick stripes. The stylist went on about how great my natural hair color is and that balayage was the right choice because he wanted to preserve my root color....but then he foiled so much of it that it's barely visible and is going to grow out horribly. He washed my hair like he has hated me all my life. It was unbelievably uncomfortable and painful I was honestly shocked. He also yanked my hair extremely hard multiple times while brushing it out. (He apparently forgot he teased half my head and seemed very surprised there were knots.) This treatment plus the processing made my scalp hurt for days. The haircut is also terrible and took all of SIX MINUTES. I asked for long layers, which he did not give me. He asked me basically no questions about it other than length. The cut itself cost $75 and I literally used to get a better haircut at supercuts. I went a few weeks back and debated whether or not to post this because he seemed genuinely happy with his work and it made me feel so awful to say how much I dislike it. He was quiet and awkward, but not unkind. Still, I don't even want to go back to have him fix it because the experience itself was so bad that I can't bear the thought of going through it again. I had a not so great experience here. Was excited because the salon got me in very quickly on a groupon for a haircut, full foil, deep condition and blow dry. and I read great reviews. I booked on a Monday and got in right when they opened on Saturday. The salon itself was worn down, had spacle on the walls, storage right in the open and a hairdresser eating right next to another client getting a haircut. Gross. I think the hair dresser's name was Lulu? She never introduced herself. She asked me what I had wanted and she stared at me blankly and I said I could show her a picture if that would help. I showed her some pictures of a lighter brown/blondish highlight but she said it was balayge. She said for an extra $85 I could get balayge. I told her I just wanted to go alittle lighter. She then said I needed to strip my hair for that. As she was telling me this she was feeling my hair and then mentioned that my hair is very frizzy, dry, and thin. She told me I needed a keratin treatment for 125. OK. How nice! I gave her a weird look and she looked at another hairdresser, spoke another language, and they both laughed. She started putting foils in my hair without really confirming what she was doing in terms of color. However, was pretty thorough. After foils she took me to the sink and then assuming she did the deep conditioning treatment- It was like a two minute mask that I could do myself at home. She then said that shes going to tone my hair for an extra $35 which I was ok with to make it look even. She sits me back down and tells me because my hair is dead she wants to cut 4 inches off. I told her I just want as little as possible cut as long as its healthy. She cut off 4 inches it looks like! The blowdry was a little messy and unfinished. Overall, Lulu did not listen to a thing I wanted, made me feel unconfident about my hair before the cut, and upselling me every chance she got. DON'T GO HERE. As much as I care for my hair, I've never felt the urge to have a personal go-to hairdresser. Usually I'll go with a salon offering a deal and even then I don't care to request a specific stylist, until now. Ramy is a hair genius! I didn't know exactly what I wanted for my hair, I just didn't like how my grown out balayage looked. My goal was simply to "touch up" my balayage to look like before, pretty simple. Overall, I'm satisfied with my hair, however that salon made me really uncomfortable. There was a male hairdresser that wasn't wearing his mask at all. I'm not sure why I tried so hard to make this salon work but my visits have never turned out how I anticipated. I first went in with a groupon and had a decent cut and color [I get full highlights to take my dark brown hair to blonde] but I wasn't floored. What got me was after switching stylists between my highlights and my cut, my bag was left at the original chair and no one decided to move it or even cover it and it ended up getting filled with SOMEONE ELSE'S HAIR!! It was absolutely repulsive and I had to wash out my bag 3 times to get it clean. For some reason I decided to give them a second chance and was seen by the owner and my cut/color was pretty average - although I'd expect more from the owner - but I felt pressured into buying a shampoo/conditioner set that ended up smelling rancid and did nothing for my hair. The last time I went [and will ever go], Saliba seemed to rush through everything. I think he was overbooked, but it really was obvious that he took shortcuts a few weeks after my visit when the toner started to fade and my "blonde" hair started to darken back to its original brown color!! I was left with a streaky, brassy mess which was not even at ALL. The worst part was that I asked to go lighter because it was the beginning of summer and he totally ignored my request. He didn't even highlight the bottom layers of my hair despite me telling him I wear my hair up for work and needed a uniform color [I guess he thought I wanted uniformly brown]. Oh yea, and the haircut was uneven. Within 1 month of my appointment I had to start editing my hair in pictures because it looked like I hadn't gotten it done at all and my roots looked like they'd spent at least 3 months growing out I went to a different salon today on Newbury St and it was worth the extra money to fix my botched hair from this place. The right side of my hair was about 2 inches shorter than the left [even with a middle part] and the new stylist had to take double the time to fill in all the mistakes and terrible streaks. I should have known that this place would disappoint me with how easy it is to book an appointment. Every time I've called they always have open spots the next day. I found this place through Groupon and bought the deal for a wash, deep conditioning treatment, cut and blowout for $46 (typically priced at about $96, usually $50 but there was an extra Groupon sale). I got it because this place had great reviews on Groupon and Yelp. Upon walking in they were very friendly but seemed in a hurry. I got an appointment for 4pm on Saturday. Online it says they close at 6pm but they kept saying they closed at 5pm (which is probably why they seemed in a hurry). I got my haircut by Ramy. I've never had a haircut quite like this. He was very friendly and nice but definitely in a hurry to finish. The wash and deep conditioning (said it was a mask but just felt like a regular conditioner) took probably a total of about 3min. It was the strangest thing right after I sat down in the chair for a haircut he asked me to stand behind the chair so he could cut my hair (I've never seen that before). It was really strange too that he didn't even really ask what I want before he started only because I was like "so this is what I'm looking for" and he kept saying "Oh yes I can do this, don't you trust me?" It was kind of uncomfortable. I thought it was really weird that after cutting before (and after blow drying) he didn't even put any products in my hair, no heat protectant no nothing... which was shocking because every hair stylist I've ever been to has always stressed the importance of heat protection. Also, I really didn't like that because I'm always so concerned about heat damage (and esp right after a fresh cut). I kept thinking he would put something in but nope. Then when he was blow drying my hair he just blew my hair everywhere all over my face and without a brush 85% of the time. I told him I wanted my hair styled with very loose waves (I showed a picture and specified I wanted VERY lose waves) and he kept saying "yes I know don't you trust me" (cue the low key eye roll in my mind). He proceeded to take out a 0.5" curling iron and curl my whole head. He asked me to flip my head down forward in the chair and tousled my hair which was also kind of awkward in the middle of the salon. The whole process took less than 30min. To be honest it wasn't a horrible experience but it just felt like he was trying to get out of there ASAP which showed in the way he worked. The haircut itself isn't horrible but the experience is really what I'm rating. Also, he seemed low key annoyed that I was giving so much input (using humor to mask his annoyance) so it was kind of uncomfortable. Overall I would give this place a 3.5. My mom got her hair done by Reema though and she was fantastic (so this is really just a review for Ramy than it is for Reema), very patient and asked a lot of questions about what she wanted and took her time (about 30min more than Ramy). Based on my experience with Ramy I don't know that I'll be coming back. If it had been good I was thinking of making the trip down once in a while (I'm from out of state) for the cut but I'd rather spend my time and money somewhere where the employees are dedicated to the customer and the quality of their work. read more

I was shampooed but did not receive any conditioner and certainly did not receive a deep condition which was stated in my groupon. Instead of a dry hair consultation, he took me to the chair while my hair was still wet and I told him I wanted a trim. He used no products in my hair. I made my appointment and as soon as I walked in, they sat me in the chair to have my hair colored. I explained to Saliba that I wanted balayage and he asked me if I wanted it to start halfway down my head or on the top. I explained that I didn't know I had an option for balayage (I literally thought it was a standard sort of thing), however, we agreed that it should start at the top. He put foils & my color in & I didn't think anything of it considering I've never had balayage done before... Onto the cut. I showed him the picture of what I wanted and told him that my hair is heavy. He explained that he would razor it and give it some texture to make it less heavy. The cut started to go well until when he began to razor my hair. IT HURT!!! I'm 26 and have gotten my fair share of haircuts and I've never experienced a haircut that actually hurt me. I wouldn't come here if you are not a natural blonde. They didnt have time to do highlights on me so i opted for color, just brown. I have brownish auburn hair and wanted a princess kate brown. The guy told me he couldnt get that light of a brown but could do a dark brown. My hair came out black! I was mortified, i have pale skin and looked washed out! My mother said i looked dead. Also when i was getting my hair deep conditioned in the bowls facing the front door in the dead of winter one of the stylists blow drying was complaining about it being hot and decided to prop the front door open when it was snowing! I've had a really tough time finding a place in Boston and I loved it here! Romy did my cut and color and it looks great. They are extremely attentive and make sure to hear out everything you want in a cut/color, but also give suggestions and explain what the options are (very helpful to me, who knows very little about hair). This is a very lengthy review so apologies in advance! While traveling to Boston I decided to finally get my hair done after probably at least a year of letting it grow wild and unmanageable. Some hair history: My hair was processed multiple times as I had my whole head very blonde at one point 1.5 years ago. This took two separate hair appointments a month apart (at a diff salon in NY) due to my very dark and thick hair. A few months later I darkened the crown and roots at home with a box brand to create my own diy ombré look. Needless to say the results weren't great, but I managed to make it somewhat presentable with lots of products/oils/hair-masks. Wish I had the 'before' taken at the salon so I could show the dramatic difference post-appointment. For reference, I have posted some old pictures of what my hair looked like a year prior, only now it was much longer and my natural black roots were more grown out). From the old 'before' pics, you can tell that my ends were much more frayed, yellow and constantly knotting up w/ lots of breakage. Choosing the hair salon: I yelped nearby salons and after reading reviews she's more experienced w/ Balayage, I booked Denise. We discussed the history of my hair and she was very honest and told me she couldn't promise specific results due to the many diff colors in my over-processed hair. She said she could certainly improve it a lot more and I was fine and realistic about the results. I requested a balayage treatment and making the current sloppy ombré effect much more subtle and cohesive along with a cut of a few inches ( I love having long hair). I wanted the yellow ends to be darkened to help achieve this look. Denise offered me the Groupon deal for the balayage treatment even before I got the chance to bring it up. She offered me the same price $99 for balayage treatment w/ an additional cost for the toner $35 that I would definitely need. The treatment: Diff parts of my hair were tin-foiled to add new highlights to brighten the crown with the aid of the heating fan machine. Then toner was applied to my hair to darken my yellow ends and allowing for all the multiple hair colors to be more consistent and evened out. She proceeded to cut off a few inches with a few layers and created a u-line effect from the back of my head. Then my hair was blown out straight. - Results - Pros: I love the end result and my hair looks a more consistent shade and appears and feels much more healthy and shiny. Once my roots grow out more in about 6 months I plan to retouch the balayage and hope to get an ever better result following my new hydrating hair routine with products I purchased on-site. Cons: The ombré effect isn't too pronounced but I don't mind it at all. I do notice some places underneath the inside that had sharp color contrasts from Denise highlighting what I'm sure she thought was virgin hair but wasn't. To her credit, it's hard to predict how my overprocessed multi-colored hair would have reacted to any color change and since it's more on the "inside" area of my hair, it's nothing that I am concerned about really. After-care: I asked about after-care and maintenance and Denise recommended shampoo & conditioning products to rehydrate my overly processed hair. I told her about how I often use several drops of an olive & coconut oil blend to tame my very damaged ends. She suggested a couple of other products from the same line that worked for that purpose. Denise said that when I finished using all of these products that the condition of my hair would improve drastically and actually be in a better condition to soak up toner and hair-treatments in the future. Overall Assesment: Would highly recommend this place & Denise for color correction and balayage treatments. She has lots of good advice so I encourage you to ask any and all hair-related questions. She revealed many surprising opinions about some everyday products I had thought were helpful to my hair. Love the friendly atmosphere and the unpretentious staff (Rodrigo is very nice and funny too). Pricing was reasonable and I was offered Groupon prices anyway so couldn't complain there. Will definitely come back here if I'm in the area again. read more
