When you ask for a quick quote from other companies, they will always try to call you and come out to your house before they can provide a quote. They will then go back & forth trying to upsell their services and push leases that makes them the most money. Highlight Solar doesn't play any of these games. With them, all I provided was my address (which they use in Google Maps to view your roof and direction of optimal sun) and my electric bill or approximate electricity usage.They were able to send me a quote without coming over to my house or talking to me over the phone. When I decided to go with them, Dean came out to my house to make sure he wouldn't encounter any issues that would change the quote. Again all cases will vary, but in my case, my install was straight forward and the cost of the estimate was actually what I paid. Honestly, I wasn't expecting that. I thought it would be like those projects where they underestimate to win your bid, then tack on minor fees that you are stuck with paying since you already committed to them. I didn't see any of that with Highlight Solar. Dean is very responsive and does everything from contacting the city for an inspection and getting you on the right plan with PG&E. With solar, it's an important investment. There are some horror stories out there with people who had bad experiences. I don't want to talk bad and name companies, so I will leave it at that. He spend a great deal of time describing what we needed and the timeline for the installation. I just can't be much happy to share an update as of today Aug 9th about HighlightSolar...I am happy to share that Solar LG Panels (7.04 DC kW system) and Solar Thermal Spaghetti Tubes are now already laid out on the roof top as of today, Aug 9th,2016 afternoon. Phenomenal work, execution, synchronization by Dean's HighlightSolar installation awesome crew members (Ricardo, Chris, Nick and critical Doug) I am telling you these guys (to start with 2 of them @ 8 am) started last Fri (Aug 5) and configured the Rails, Flashing and Stud kids on the roof for LG320 panels (22 pcs). By Monday and half of today, All Solar PV Electric panels, inverters, connection to Main Service Panel 40 A breaker (need 35 Amp for Solar PV) and Pool Thermal Heating System collectors, Solar touch controller along with roof and water sensors are fully mechanically, electrically configured, installed and bolted down....That's darn neat, speedy and super duper FAST n FURIOUS!! I had 3 competitive bids for a 4.25 Kwh solar electric system for my home in Sunnyvale, Ca. All three systems were for Enphase Inverters with Canadian Solar panels. Excellent service. They replaced the aging solar pool heater in our Eichler last spring (2015). Another contractor was replacing our roof at the same time. Highlight Solar was very flexible and right on schedule in working with the roofer. Work was done on schedule, and everything worked the first time. This Spring (2016), the flashing "check sensor" light came on as soon as I turned the solar pool heater back on. It took one phone call for Doug to show up at our home. My experience working with Highlight Solar has been nothing but FIRST CLASS from start to finish and beyond, so it's easy to see why they have a 5-star rating from their customers. It's been over 6 months since we've had solar panels installed on our newly remodeled home and we love it. Just installed some totally sweet LG NeON2 panels with a Solar Edge inverter. The process was very easy and straightforward, including working with Mario. It took about 2 work days to get the panels installed and hooked up. This company is very chill, especially compared with the high-pressure sales tactics employed by Solar City. Those jokers are still calling me after I've told them repeatedly I am not interested! I recommend this company to anyone looking to get solar installed. I had an outstanding experience with Highlight Solar from start to finish. I researched this a lot and finally decided that I wanted to own the panels outright. I narrowed my choice down to two vendors, Highlight Solar and one other vendor who was slightly lower cost. I then started communicating with the two vendors to get their bid. Dean from Highlight was always super responsive and wonderful to work with. This was in stark contrast to the second company which completely fell down when it came to responsiveness and customer service. And this was even before they had sold me the system! To cut a long story short, I chose to go ahead with Highlight Solar, their price was extremely competitive and they had gained my trust. Dean helped me size the system correctly and helped me avoid going for too many panels. My system size is 28 panels of 300W each with Enphase micro-inverters. I have not regretted my decision for a moment. Dean gave me an installation date and Francisco and his team were super punctual arriving on that date. I had been told that the installation would take 3 days but they finished ahead of schedule in about 2.5 days! This was another very pleasant surprise. Francisco also handled the PG&E inspection and quickly made the necessary changes that the inspector requested. Dean and team were very prompt with all paperwork and I had everything I needed to file for my Federal tax credit. They also monitored my system and made sure the Enphase monitoring was activated and the monitoring application was working properly. A year has now passed and my system has been working flawlessly. I have been thinking about solar as an investment for a long time now but the price just wasn't right for me. When the prices recently took a plunge I decided that so would I. Shopping around for solar energy in the bay area is difficult as there are so many companies willing to do it nowadays, however after talking to a lot of different people one name kept coming up in conversation, highlight solar. I looked at some of their prices and it was shocking to see how much lower they were than a lot of the competition. Other companies were trying to charge me 8 dollars a watt but highlight solar said they would do it for less than 4 dollars a watt!!!! I would also like to talk a bit about service. There were two people at highlight solar that really made my experience incredibly enjoyable, Pat, and Dean. Pat was the electrician and he wasn't at all bothered by my barrage of a million different questions about what exactly he was doing. He was very patient and answered all of my questions politely. Dean who I worked with before I met pat will work day and night to resolve your issues and make sure your system is up and running ASAP. I emailed him at 8am and he replied almost instantly I emailed him again at 10:30pm and again he replied like magic. UPDATE: The system they installed exhibits a very loud and prolonged (30+ minutes) thumping (water hammer) on my roof when the pump turns off and the water drains from the solar panels. Dean acted as though this was normal and acceptable and as though inspecting it anyway was an above-and-beyond courtesy. He even insinuated I was lying about what was happening (why would I?! I event provided a video as evidence) I spoke with another solar contractor who explained the way in which the install was done incorrectly. It is not difficult or expensive to fix but the owner of this company treated me terribly anyway. THEY DO NOT HONOR THEIR GUARANTEE. When I asked for manufacturer warranty information so I could discontinue business with them, they ignored me repeatedly until sending me nothing but a stock warranty card from Pentair (no serial numbers or proofs of purchase) and nothing for the solar system itself (only the controller). Review is for replacement install of a solar pool heater. Their communication is awful. If you work with them DO NOT be a pushover or let them Mansplain over you! Research how the job should be done and insist it is done CORRECTLY. Speed to come out for consult: 5 stars Quality of work: 3 stars Communication and Customer Service: 0 stars Sales guy came out within 1 day of my first email inquiry. He immediately tried to push electric solar, and a few minutes later a new pool pump. Price seemed reasonable -- 8 4x10 UMA SunStar panels + Pentair SolarTouch controller + install + disposing of the panels from my old system came out to $5500 (10% deposit) They shipped the panels to me a few weeks before the install and were kind of jerks about it when I asked for the delivery to be put into my backyard directly, saying the delivery guys were really busy and it was really light so I could move it myself (it was NOT very light, it took 2 people to move each panel individually). Then I got an email late on a Tuesday morning that the installers would be there in 2 hours (!!!). I had brought the cardboard boxed supplies into my garage to protect them from big rain storm we had a few days before, expecting more than 2 hours warning. I told them I was already at work and couldn't come home to deal with this. Instead of understanding and working to schedule it when it worked for me, they pushed me on it, insisting it had to happen that day (???). I was able to send a family member over with a key to get the supplies out of the garage. The job was half done and given it was so last minute on day 1, I expected to be contacted the next morning about when they'd be back to finish it. On day 2, I woke up to workers in my backyard, no warning -- luckily I heard them before I saw them in my underwear in the privacy of my home! Lucky for them I didn't have a dog that needed to be restrained (seriously, they were trespassing, a pet dog would be correct in attacking yard intruders!) The panel replacement took 2 days, at the end of which I got a voicemail asking for payment. I came home to the control box attached ankle-high on a fencepost (3 feet from the pool equipment, electrical conduit stretched as a tripping hazard). Pipes were covered in blue and purple smudged sealant (not professional), and my cat grass garden was completely trampled despite stepping stones on one side and no vegetation on the other side. The sun sensor from the control panel had an exposed (unsafe, not up to code) wire splice, and the sensor itself was placed on the fence in a place that would be cast in shade most of the day, when the manual says explicitly that it should be placed as close to the panels as possible to have the same sun exposure. It took 2 days of emails with the owner of the company to get the controller box + sun sensor install in an acceptable state (but nothing polished to write home about). I quoted the install manual for how the job needed to be done correctly (as it was not done the first few attempts), and the owner fought me on it -- acted as if I was being unreasonable, tried to Mansplain to me like I was incorrect when quoting the install manual (and what another contractor told me), "Sensors are tricky, I believe you do not have the whole picture." -- but self-congratulated that aren't they great guys for doing it anyway? No, I expect a professional quality job to be done when I'm paying you over $5000, and if it's not done well, I'm going to call you on it and expect it done right or I am not paying you at all! I was able to stay home from work on the 4th day of install to oversee the sensor placement was done correctly (3rd time is a charm) and sign off before paying them. Doug was very reasonable, friendly, and answered all my questions very clearly and kindly. I wish I could have just worked with him. read more

Since the price of solar systems have come down in the past couple of years, I decided to dive in again and get a few bids. The two companies which I focused on were Highlight Solar (small company) and Clear Solar (large company). Highlight Solar was by far the lowest price, but they ended being the best choice for me. They were responsive to my questions and even installed a couple of extras for me without additional charges. The Highlight Solar job completed in about a week and the solar system was generating power fairly quickly even though I was not yet onto the PG&E net metering as of yet. The quoted system with 34 Canadian Solar 250W panels and 34 Enphase micro-inverters work quite well and I am already seeing 40% less energy usage even with our shorter days. Considering that buying a solar system is like buying a car, do your homework and ask a lot of questions regarding installation. That's were the companies differentiate themselves. Recommend installation system which bolts the solar mounting rails under the roofs tiles...NOT drilled thru the roof tiles. The system parts are pretty much a commodity now without much difference in price and performance. Almost all the quotes used the same parts. Overall, nobody does a perfect job and there will be something to nitpick about, but the main point is that Highlight Solar satisfied all my needs and concerns. Plus, I feel I could pick up the phone call them and they would respond to any future questions or problems I may encounter. Therefore, I give them a 5 star rating. Here are my observations regarding both companies. Clean Solar: - Installs solar mounting rails by drilling through the roof tiles, big negative to me - Do not install mounting rails using this method, potential water leaks is a big concern - I did not agree with the method of running conduits to the power panel and they did not seem very flexible with my ideas - Large backlog, could not install my system until February 2014, another negative - Offered me a chance to jump ahead of other customers, for a charge, so some other poor customer get pushed back - Not the lowest cost system Highlight Solar - Smaller company, very flexible and agile to meet my needs - Lowest cost system, very cost competitive - Mounting system installed under roof tiles, not drilled thru them - Cannot see the conduit running to the power panel, very aesthetic install - Installed a new electrical outlet and my EV charger with a 240v plug outlet and added a 24v adapter plug to my Clipper Creek EV charger at no extra charge - Clean and professional work, they cleaned up thoroughly at completion read more

We just completed our solar panel installation by Highlight Solar about one month back. Ali came to our house to survey our rooftop and a subsequent visit to review their proposal. Ali, as indicated by many reviews, is very knowledgeable and professional. I am very satisfied with his proposal and his knowledge to be able to answer any questions I've asked. I contacted at least 4 solar companies (Solar City, Sungevity, Clean Solar, and Highlight Solar), I got quotes for purchase and leasing options. Third, my roof is a "flat" type and uses a vinyl membrane, which, during construction we learned special boots were needed to do the roof right - many thanks for alerting me of the issue and researching solutions - it added some unexpected cost; but, to do it right, no problem. Fourth, they worked dilligently to get my system right, finding a small mis-wiring issue - no problem. The result is a great system where each panel reports out its data to a nifty webpage, each panel with its own inverter and electrically activated disconnect. There are even error reports should something go wrong. The owner really cares about his clients and the install crew was wonderful with constant feedback - ok next we do ABC, then DEF and then XYZ. Highlight Solar was a great and pleasant experience. They installed a 6KW system for me in addition to the pre-existing system I had installed 5 years ago. The new system is amazing! Using enphase technology, I am able to monitor my system from anywhere and drill down to the single panel to find if I have anything shading or for better analysis. I have received a few quotes prior to going with Highlight. They gave me both the best price and best equipment choices! I also received an amazing power efficiency optimizer which is saving me 20% extra! Overall the price was unbeatable! I don't write many reviews but this one was important that I write. I spent about 3 weeks going through quotes from big box solar installers to local shops in the south bay area. Probably had 7 quotes in total which was extremely time consuming. I quickly realized that given my high PG+E bills, my time to recoup the cost of the system would be around 5 years so it'd be silly to lease it. After much deliberation I picked Highlight and Dean. This was based on cost, truthfulness, helpfulness, time it would take to install, and also other yelp reviews! As I was traveling for the month of July I asked him if he could get the install done before I left (2 weeks beginning to end). He said yes. Note that I got estimates of 1-2 months from other companies. Bottom line is that he and his team got the permits, delivered the install, and got a very clean and producing system up right before I left. He didn't sacrifice quality as the panels do look very clean and symmetric. He's been absolutely great at servicing and being responsive to silly newbie questions even after the install. He obviously knows the industry and the technologies as well as how to do provide good customer service. I got my first full bill last week, and I have absolutely no qualms about running the AC as much as I want now given that my bill was essentially $0. Based on other reviews, we chose Highlight and we are glad we did. We got a great (the best!) $/kW rate, but even more importantly it was super easy on us. They did all the paperwork, worked with the city, had the inspections done, and submitted the PG&E paperwork. Too easy. Why didn't I do this years ago? System went on super quickly and smoothly. Highlight was all over getting it on as fast as possible, with the only time-triggered elements due to panel shipments and city permitting approvals. read more

I didn't go with highlight solar because I was able to get better financing from another company, but I loved the sales guy, Eddy. The company sounds fantastic! You absolutely must consider getting a bid from Highlight solar when you are shopping around for solar. By the way, the solar company that I am going with is meh so far. read more

Home solar project that is inexpensive from a reliable company I have done so much research on the solar installation companies in San Jose for about a year before I decided to go with Highlight Solar. Clean Solar was my first choice when I see the most positive reviews. Though, I see that the waiting time is very long and the price is more expensive than Highlight Solar. Therefore, I went with Highlight Solar for their lowest price that I could find out there. I went with Solarworld SW275 mono panels for the cost of $4.14 per watt before Federal rebate. I don''t see any other solar companies out there that could compete with this price. Dean, the owner of the company explained every details about the installation process and he didn''t hesitate to give extra your good advises. It took them 2 days to complete the installation and a few days to get the inspection completed. So the total time is less than 2 weeks from the date of signing the contract. Doug and Ricardo were the installers and I could see their did everything with care. They treated my home as theirs. They made clean cut on my stucco wall instead of breaking the wall to install new wiring. The final wall patches and painting were also clean and well done. Dough helped me rewired my breakers panel and helped me taped up all the exposed wire cuts no additional cost. It has been 2 months now and solar panels are generating very good amount of power. The average power that I get is about 10Kwatt/day using the 8x275W panels. read more

Dean was really professional and patiently answered all my questions. On top of it, his great worked for my brother made my decision easy as well. His screws were good, and the works were done in a couple days. It has been 3 months, and my system has been performed according to his modelings. I would highly recommend Highlight Solar if you are in the market for Solar. BTW, i wished i have gone GREEN earlier..the PG&E bill looks great now !!! I had a wonderful experience with Highlight Solar. The person whom I met originally and set everything up with was Quang.Tran. Quang was very friendly, and also knew his stuff! I think that one of the main reasons we sighed up with Highlight Solar was because of Quang. The person who did a lot of the wiring up (including rewiring the electrical panel of my house) was Doug Funk. I needed Doug's help to understand the new electrical wiring of my house, and he spent literally several hours patiently walking through all of the information I needed. The company makes thing as easy as possible for you by setting the system up with PG&E. Today I got my first PG&E bill since the solar panels went up, and it was for $27! (Previous bills were in the hundreds of dollars.) Overall, I am very happy that I signed up with Highlight Solar. read more

Highlight was one of 4 solar companies that I met with and discussed with regards to where we wanted to go with our solar project. Having extensively researched larger solar companies, it became very apparent that we wanted a local firm (as opposed to one of the big nationals). Throughout every step of the plan we were kept well informed. From Quang meeting with us initially to help size, layout, and explain the proposal, to Jesse and crew who installed, and finally Dean, for finalization and answering my remaining questions, these guys are as good as it gets. A couple of additional data points to consider. They were incredibly well prepared, and the final city inspection signoff (which I was presents for) took a total of 11 minutes. Amazing. Second, there were no surprises along the way, with regards to timing or unforeseen costs. Third, they didnt just meet the time line, they beat it. Highly recommend! read more

I really regret using them. I got three quotes from different companies. Everyone's price and plan were about the same, but I liked the guy came for the estimate. He explained well and his solar panel layout was better than others, so we picked them, but it was worst mistake we made. They are pretty bad planner and communicator and worst customer care. Until we asked next step, no one told us the schedule, and even we experienced no show!! I can tell you more than 20 complains and zero kudo about them but I don't want to waste my time for them any more, so I just tell one biggest problem. Once they installed, they don't care at all. We could not confirm if the power was connected to Sillicon Valley power (like PG&E), but no one in the company supported us, so we contacted SVP by ourselves. We were back and forth until SVP found the problem and fixed. This company help NOTHING during the time, and we had to contact to SVP and solved the problem by ourselves. Solar is long term equipment. I have zero confidence of they support if we have problem in the future. It's too late for us, but if you are thinking install solar system, I strongly recommend stay away from them! read more
