We had a consultation on 11/20 with Highlight Solar. The meeting went well. We were provided with a ton of information and all of our questions were answered. We were given a quote for solar but since we wanted batteries we were told we would getting a final quote over the next week or so since he did not have that pricing on him. We had no problem waiting but sadly never received a final quote. I am giving 3 starts because I felt like our meeting was helpful and informational. This is a long overdue review. Highlight Solar installed my solar panels in October, 2017 and they did a wonderful job. I have to make special mention of Ali. He really took the time to explain the features and specifications of the system as well as how billing works with PG&E. It was this extra effort that made me go with Highlight Solar even though they weren't the least expensive quote I received (they were the 2nd least expensive so their price was still very reasonable). I figured that if someone was willing to spend that kind of time to make sure I understood how I would be billed after the system is installed (and after they have taken my money), they must really take care of their customers. Dean and his team were great to work with through all the phases of installing a solar panel installation. Dean was very patient in explaining how the system would work and what would be the best configuration for my install. I'm very happy to be a Highlight customer and I recommend anyone looking to go solar electric to at least talk to this company. I interviewed a bunch of companies and Highlight Solar was the best blend of price, expertise, sales and customer support. I also really like that they are a smaller company but has enough scale to make me feel comfortable about them sticking around for 15 years to honor their system warranty. I've talked to the owner Dean a few times in the recent years and he's always been super responsive. His customer based mindset pervades throughout his company and the entire team worked very hard to accommodate my various requests on a very tight timeline. My sales rep Ali went above and beyond what he's expected to do to help get the project done in a timely manner. Jesse on project management and Sam on interconnection etc were all great to work with and very detailed which I really like. The installation crew did a great job despite the hectic year end schedule and the electrician Doug was a total standout. The inspector came out earlier than scheduled but Doug was there and we passed very quickly with flying colors thanks to all the great prep. All in all, I don't think anyone would be disappointed by going with Highlight. There was not much expectation at the start of home solar system project. Got Highlight as referral from a close friend, also a few inquiries from different sources as well as the one from Costco. A couple of them were quite good giving advice, but Ali with Highlight got my attention almost immediately. A soft spoken gentleman brought with him a tool bag and computer then "jumped" on the ladder to the roof of my house without any hesitation. At first, I was suspicious to see all the raving reviews in yelp for Highlight solar, but the truth is that Highlight solar wins 5 stars on every aspect of the installation process and for the right reasons. Dean, the sales guy and owner was super professional all the way, taking care to explain in great patience all the details in numerous emails and several phone calls. The price of the installed system was very competitive compared to 2 other quotes I got (and I have done meticulous homework). I also bundled an upgrade of the service panel from a 45 year old Zinsco to a brand new 200Amp panel. Despite the fact that this required a day and a half of work, with new grounding rods and cables running from one side of the house all the way to the other side in and out of the crawlspace - there was no single complaint, no attempt to surcharge or anything - just super professional attitude all the way ! Dean also provided anodized mounting for the solar panels at no additional charge, and helped with the configuration of the Enphase monitoring system. Schedule-wise, I was in a rush to complete the installation due to some personal constraints, and guess what ? the entire project completed in just two and half weeks !! (except the PG&E net meter switch which is still pending...). Other quotes I got listed 14 weeks of lead time ! The only small disadvantage compared to another quote I got was the financing which wasn't as lucrative as one I got from a bigger installer, but given the overall price of the system - it is hard to compare. Bottom line: I recommend highlight solar to anybody who plans on a buy vs. lease. Just finished installing a 8.33kw system across 3 roofs on my home. I have a decent slope and also a concrete tile roof. I quoted out 5 companies locally and ended up hiring highlight solar because of the pricing as well as the interaction I had with the owner. The benefit of working with highlight was the fact that they were able to get our system installed quicker than the other companies I have quoted, accommodating my every request. We had a new subpanel, new wiring and rerouting of existing electrical, as well as 34 panels installed, taking a total of about 2 weeks from delivery till completion. I just did a large-ish 8.67KW fully-owned residential solar installation in our Cupertino home with Highlight Solar. The system was up and running in only 2-3 weeks from the time we signed the contract. Besides their pricing model and the upfrontness in the matter was amazing. No other installer was offering $3.49/W for a fully installed system (with polycrystalline panels for single floor homes). Even with our choice of monocrystalline panels and a 2-story home surcharge, we ended up paying only $3.67/W, which was better than anything else I could find in the Bay area at this time. There were no hidden costs. I paid a very reasonable amount extra to upgrade my electrical panel and to also install a home energy-efficiency device - both were discounted as they were included as part of the solar installation. The panels installed were from Canadian Solar along with Enphase micro-inverters. Mehyeddin (Dean) and his crew (Doug / Nick) were wonderful. They were right on schedule. Doug and Nick worked very hard even over a very hot week to get the panels up on the roof and get everything working in only a few days. There was a delay of only 1 day because of certain complications related to the panel upgrade - which was not their fault. However they resolved the issue quickly and had a solution approved by the city in short order. One other thing that they helped was in trimming a tree that was shading some of the panels. Nick and a sub-contractor trimmed the tree at a very reasonable price for me and resolved the shade issue to my satisfaction. I did not have to deal with it except for paying a reasonable amount for the job. Mehyeddine and his crew's customer service was also amazing. He was very polite all along, and kept me in the loop on all developments and issues, all through the process. I had a fabulous experience with Highlight Solar from start to finish. This is a family run business and I got individual attention. A salesman came to my house and walked me through all of the details and options regarding potential options. We got into the technical details which I enjoy about output, heat, inverters, monitoring, and more. We talked about the tradeoffs between different panel options in terms of efficiency versus cost. I felt really confident about the technology by the end of the session. Comparing the Highlight proposal to the ones I got from other companies, I could see I was getting a better deal with Highlight. Oddly enough, when I told this to a salesman from another company, he immediately offered to drop the price of their system by more than a thousand dollars. Just goes to show how much some companies overcharge. The installers were on-time and professional, finishing as promised. The representative on-site for the city inspection was also great, walking me through the process. He also showed me how the monitoring system works and how it was operating. I really want to commend Alex for the excellent, thorough explanation he gave us when he came by to explain to us the intricacies of solar panels/solar batteries. While we decided to hold off due to the cost, we really appreciated his time and succinct explanations of all the details involved in a solar purchase. There was no hard sell at all! Here's what I loved about them: * Willing to put an array of panels on my metal tile roof, even after 3 other companies refused due to the extra labor involved * Detailed report with the quote explaining the economics involved in sizing the system -- they ran multiple reports to give me a couple of options based on various hypothetical scenarios * Answered every question I had about the process and the system (as an electrical engineer, I had many of these!) * Inked the deal and coordinated the install with me entirely over email (except for one brief office visit to sign the contract); I never even had to pick up the phone! They were phenomenal from start to finish. One of the crew members accidentally stepped on one of our skylight covers and the owner, Dean, was so on top of it. Highlight Solar just finished my solar installation project and I could not be any happier with both the process and the end result. Dean, the owner, came to my home and I had a good feeling immediately. He was professional, personable, and extremely knowledgeable. Dean and I mainly communicated over e-mail, where I would receive an answer or update the same day, sometimes within an hour or so. Once the contract was initiated, the project began the next day. Doug was the lead for the install team. He and the two other crew members were outstanding. They were respectful, cleaned up after themselves, and asked for my input on several things. They even went so far as to ask for house paint so they could color-match the conduit pipe to match my house. The project took about 3 days. I was very concerned about adding solar to my house because the installation site is directly on the front (street-facing) side of my recently remodeled home. Their installation job was so clean that I believe it actually complements the house. They matched the roof shingles with special roofing paint that makes the very small conduit run that is visible virtually disappear. Pros Dean is easy to deal with: I had a issue with the contract so he changed 2 minor things with no hassle. Price point was one of the best out there. Con One of the employees was a bit rude and bordering on condescending. I found that i just had to be a bit stern and called Dean. Dean talked to him and everything was fine. Job site had trash left behind. (I know it is a job site with trash all around anyway. I didn't want to be stuck with having to dump it myself) I called Dean and not only did he agree to get it cleaned up, he came on a Saturday (the very next day) and picked it up himself. this is almost a Pro to me when an owner takes pride and picks it up himself. Everything went very smoothly during the whole process, there were only two things that I wish were done better: - After signing the contract we didn't hear anything from the company till we emailed them 4 weeks later and finally hearing back just a few days before the installation. - For the rebate with our utility company (SVP in Santa Clara) we were supposed to get a pre-approval, but I was not told about this and we had some trouble getting the refund, but it worked at the end. We chose Highlight Solar due to there high ratings, additionally they could install both Solar PV and a new Thermal Solar for our pool. The project was well coordinated with a new roof installation from Los Gatos Roofing which was essential to assure the best waterproofing installation of all the standoffs and panels. The reason for the four stars(****) out of five is as follows: (1) Installation plans for the system were initially sent to me and the roofing company via pdf document representing the incorrect residence. (2) When I identified the error to the company, it was corrected but the plan layout showed the incorrect placement of the PV panels, not accounting for the Pool Thermal panels to also be installed next to the PV panels. (3) I again identified the need to correct the installation plan to the company. Fortunately I was home on the day to install panels and work in unison with the roofing company. The plans 'had not' been corrected and the PV panels and standoffs would have been installed incorrectly. I identified the "correct placement" to the installers and a potentially large installation problem was averted. I found the installers to be top-notch and very knowledgeable (especially Doug) with Hardwear and software tie-in of the completed system. Dean schedules his installers tightly with other projects and this sometimes resulting in rushed work. So far to date I have been very satisfied with the overall performance of the system. I additionally will recommend Highlight Solar to my neighbors who have been asking about this company and are beginning there research into Solar PV companies. I recommend that all homeowners keep a active role in understanding the design and installation of there Solar PV system. read more

Our desire was to install as large a rooftop solar system as we could without any panels visible from the street. We received bids from four solar companies including Highlight Solar. The Highlight Solar bid had several things going for it: 1) it was the only company where a representative came to our house to take measurements to provide a definitive bid -- the other three companies wanted us to put down a deposit first before they would measure our house and lay out the system, 2) it was able to fit more panels that the other three companies would commit to, 3) it proposed the earliest project start and shortest installation time span, 4) it had the lowest bid, and 5) it is a diamond certified company. We agreed to purchase a 9.1 KW system with 32 panels from Highlight Solar. Once we signed the contract, the panels and inverters were delivered within a week. Installation began four days later, and was completed in three days. Final inspection was completed on the first visit two weeks later (would have been one week, but it was delayed because we were out of town). Three days after the inspection, PG&E approved our Net Energy Metering (NEM) application. The whole process took one month, which was half the time any of the other companies would commit to. Dean and his folks were a pleasure to work with during the whole project. In addition to the solar installation itself, they handled all aspects of the city permitting and NEM application process with PG&E. Highlight Solar just finished installing my 6kW system. My only regret is not finding them sooner. My initial email contact with Dean (owner) was replied to within an hour and included a detailed solar proposal. My following 10 emails with various questions were replied to promptly answering all of my questions. The solar job included replacing my old 100A panel with a new 200A panel. Highlight Solar's construction crew was professional and easy to work with. Numerous times I was outside asking questions during the install and they were never irritated or bothered by my curiosity. During the city permit process Highlight Solar discovered there was an outstanding plumbing permit from year 2000. Dean went out of his way to arrange a plumbing contractor to take care of the outstanding issues to ensure no hassles on my end and no delay in the solar install. Overall, 5 stars. read more

He guided me away from my original thoughts on using a more expensive brand of panel as we had plenty of open roof space for the size system we needed and could use less expensive panels. We saved about $6000 (25%) as a result of this and also due to Highlight's naturally competitive pricing. Highlight employs their own installers, which means no long wait for contract installers to become available as with some of the bigger outfits. After signing all the paperwork, it was only 3 weeks until the system was fully installed. Install was very clean. When connecting to our main panel, they even rerouted some existing conduit at no charge to keep the area looking great. The whole team at Highlight was extremely friendly. I peppered Dean and Doug, the field engineer, with questions through the whole process and they were always happy to answer and explain anything I was curious about. Mario B. from Highlight Solar came out to give us an estimate. He was courteous and professional. Listened to what our needs were and proposed a plan. It took us a while to decide to go with Highlight not because we didn't like the proposal, but because we were collecting other bids. We did not receive one single phone call asking us if we had made our decision - no pressure tactics here! Once we collected our bids and did our comparison, we did decide to go with Highlight and also asked for additional panels in anticipation of increased electricity usage from A/C and EV. A new proposal was promptly submitted and within a week of signing the contract, the panels were installed and working. Enphase monitoring equipment/software works great too. Highlight took care of all paperwork with the Building Permits and the NET Metering application with PG & E. Received a folder with all of our solar panel information within weeks of NET Metering acceptance of our unit. It included a copy of our signed contract, original Permit, NET Metering Application and approval, panel information, and the forms for Federal tax rebate.
