Contrary to my expectations, looking for a solar installation company took a decent amount of time and effort. This is mainly because of the sleazy middleperson companies involved in the business. There are some good companies though, as I am writing a review for one. I was contacted by Ali N soon after I provided my details on their website. My initial reason was based on the locality of this business but the experience turned more pleasant as we progressed. Ali came by and took a look at the roof taking measurements and giving a well adjusted and practical quote. He was not pushy at all and patiently answered all my questions. While the quote I got was not the cheapest and to be fair, Ali clearly said that wasn't an attempt either, it was pretty close and comparable to the other quotes I have received. There was however a scheduling issue between our timelines. This is the reason for me choosing another installer but I definitely recommend them. In fact, I just referred them to a neighbor. I live in the San Lorenzo Valley, near Santa Cruz. I got proposals from two solar companies in Santa Cruz and three in San Jose. All had excellent reviews. I don't think I would have gone far wrong with any of them. But there were significant differences in price and warranty policies. After many emails to clarify details with many of the five installers, I signed a contract with Highlight Solar. I am glad I did. Their price was attractive; their warranty covered every issue and circumstance I could think of. Working with them was about as good an experience as I could have hoped for. There were a couple occasions I needed to be clear and specific about what I wanted, but I never got anything but courteous assent to my requests. Some of those required extra trips on their part from San Jose to my house, almost an hour each way. Others required extra hours of work on their part, such as my preference to place the collector boxes at a location that required some extra conduit routing. There were discussions, but no complaints or extra charges, ever. I particularly enjoyed how multi-cultural the Highlight Solar staff is. The office staff are largely Persian-American, the field guys are mostly Latin-American and the foreman is from Macedonia. All of them are smart, hard-working and eager to satisfy their clients. Most of the companies recommended LG panels and Enphase micro-inverters, which is what Highlight sold me. I am particularly pleased with the Enphase monitoring software which allows me to see exactly how much power I'm getting from the system, by the day, by the quarter-hour, and panel by panel. We had several friends tell us horror stories about their solar buying/leasing experience so my wife and I started the grind of research and quoting for our project. We received several quotes and were immediately impressed with Highlight Solar upon their first visit. Leo was very professional and down to earth. Solar City is everywhere and was naturally my first choice. My inquiry with them met with a super fast response and within 20mins I had a sales guy wanting me to sign a contract for 20 years, waiting in my inbox. The focus was all on how much money I was going to save by leasing their systems and how little I have to pay to go solar. The savings of $30 did not impress me and the salesperson just pissed me off by calling me 5 times a day. That's when I decided to go on Yelp and look for others and found out about Highlight Solar with all 5 star reviews. Interview Process: Sean Rachlin was the sales rep that I worked with. Absolute professional in his approach and zero pressure on you to sign anything. Like others, he sent his estimate over the e-mail, but, warned me that this may not be accurate based on google maps and images. He offered to visit my home and explain me the whole process and give a more accurate proposal as well. We met up, he got on to my roof, made a bunch of real estate and light measurements for the panels and readjusted his original estimate. All this he did without promise of signing any contract. He explained me all the options, costs and even ways to financing them. I was doing my research meanwhile and talked to couple of other companies. Those companies had a single motto. Make their sales pitch over the phone and make me sign a contract. The contrast was stark and it was not about penning saving for me anymore. Just give the business to an honest local business guy who puts in the hard work and goes that extra mile to earn their business. When Sean made a polite enquiry a week later, I just told him to come home and I was ready to sing the contract for a 19 panel 5.42 kW DC system. Pre-Installation Process: The contract that I signed said that they would finish the installation within a month. I ran into a little bit of a cash flow issue one week after signing and approached Sean to slow down and I may not be ready. Again, he was very understanding and said that, he will wait for me to make up my mind and offered help with understanding multiple financing options. Another week later, he contacted me on a Monday and said that if I was ready, they could get the system installed by the end of the week! That offer was too tempting to pass up for me. I just made the bold move and charged the whole thing to my credit card and asked them to proceed. Installation Process: To be honest, I know nothing about it :) That is as good as it got! My family was vacationing in India and I was at work everyday at 8.30 in the morning returning only after 7. These guys just came and did their job quitely and by the end of Friday and I had perfectly aligned, discretely installed panels on my roof top. I barely met their installation crew one day when I was on my way out. On Friday, they just left the monitoring panel at the front door and they were done. I texted Dean, the owner at 10.30 in the night that I needed help with the installation of the monitoring device. He responded right away and showed up the next day morning. He installed it for me and that was the first time I met the owner, who is an engineer and his mission seem to be giving an totally painless service to his customers. Post Installation Process; All the panels are up and running as expected. Inspection passed the following Tuesday and here I'm writing this review. Why on earth would I not rate this guy 5 stars? I work for Amazon and I know that the best customer service achieved when the customer does not have to contact the service center at all. And that's what happened here. We're so glad we found Eddy and Highlight Solar! After getting quotes from 3 others companies, it was truly a refreshing experience. Where other companies would try to lock you with one PV Solar Panel manufacturer, or in one system size, Eddy went over 5 different systems with us, explaining the pro and cons for each. He helped to size properly our system based on our historical PG&E data, and unlike another vendor he did not turn us down because our electrical consumption was "too low". Eddy was always prompt to answer our emails and question, and we really enjoyed his positive and fun personality. Based on a lot of research that we did and also thanks to Eddy's advice We decided to go with the made in USA and greener SolarWorld SW 285, with 12 micro-inverters EnPhase Energy M250. According to Eddy's calculation we'll break even in about 8 years (we purchased our system), most likely sooner since PG&E keeps increasing their rates. Highlight Solar offered us the longest warranty: 15 years on installation and against roof leaks. Panels and microinverters have a 25 years manufacturer warranty. Highlight Solar was the most competitive in terms of pricing, especially on a smaller system like ours. Other positive point is that Highlight Solar instal crew work full time with the company, and are highly qualified, they really did a clean and professional job on our roof. We love the EnPhase website and App to monitor in realtime our production. Unlike some other system with a single inverter, the micro inverter technology offers 4 significant advantages: 1. if one PV Solar panel or micro inverter fails, our production would be impacted by less than 10% and the system would remain operational. 2. If one PV Solar panel is the shade, other panels production would not be affected 3. We did a lot of research and talking to a lot of companies before deciding on Highlight Solar. Dean, the owner, was always very prompt and informative in his responses. With a project to install 26 solar panels that produces 7.28kWh, it took them only two weeks from the day we signed the contract to the final inspection. During the time, they were very personable while getting the job done professionally. I am very impressed with how the solar system is connected to PG&E NEM program. Everything was done so smoothly that we did not notice any problems with electricity usage during the transition period. The package he sent us after the project's completion include all the necessary information about the project from the original contract to final inspection report, PG&E references, tax credit info, etc. It has only been 5 weeks and instead of paying our $250 monthly bill, we just received our first credit from PG&E for $20. As having solar system installed is a 20 years commitment, I spoke to 5 solar companies not just to compare the price but most importantly to see cross reference the information they provided. What I found out, sales reps mostly reply on the computer program generated quote. Interestingly, after analyzing the same PG&E electricity usage history, some quoted me 7.6kw and some quoted me 5.8kw system. That is a huge difference that I definitely would love to sort out why. Most sales rep will cite that is how their software calculates, some said that is based upon system needs to cover 100% PG&E usage. Only Ali from Highligh Solar clearly explained how PG&E Net Metering works, and made clear sense the system size he recommended. The most amazing about Ali is that any question I came up with, e.g. what is the back feed of my main panel, he can get me the right answer right away even after 6 weeks of his visit, with picture of my panel attached. Once the decision is made, Ali walked me through the proposal and contract review, and Dean, the owner, was also very accommodating to accept some revisions I requested.. Then Jesse helped with permits and project management, Sam helped with monitoring and PG&E application, plus the professional installation team who made the whole process as smooth as it gets. 2 days after installation, I reported weird system reading from Solar Edge mobile app, Dean and Sam called Solar Edge and confirmed they need to replace the inverter, which then got scheduled and done in less than 2 days by next available technician. Highlight Solar had to work with some constraints on my roof: 1. reroofing and 2. concerns about appearance. They did so wonderfully, do the roof with the panels looks great. 1. Reroofing: Since it's a Spanish tile roof and the tiles are very fragile and wouldn't be able to support the panels, we had to work with the roofer to remove the tiles and put composition shingles. Then the solar panels were placed on the composition shingles, and tiles were placed around the panels. I had spoken to other companies, and they all told me the same thing: we had to reroof. 2. Appearance: I was wary of destroying our beautiful and functional new roof and putting some shingles and ugly panels on it. But they were able to accomplish a very nice look, without too many conduits or devices being visible, and the panels looking like a sea of black. I got quotes from several solar companies, ranging from large national corporations to small local businesses. After my research and talking to my father who is a solar expert and has had panels for over 20 years, I decided to go with Highlight Solar, and I am glad I did! They had all the perks of a large company - price advantage, parts warranty, labor warranty etc. However they also have the perks of a small local business: when you call you get a human every time, or a quick call back if they need to. They did a wonderful job on our house and supplied us with a clear diagram of how the solar would be placed and on which roof faces. Because of the orientation of our house relative to the sun, Mario advised us to put the solar array on the front of our house, as the rear and side faces would not provide enough energy to zero out our huge electricity bill each month ($400+ dollars a month in summer). We opted for an 8 KW system to bring us down to about 10 bucks a month, which is the least you can pay PG&E, it's their baseline connection fee to establish service. That brought us from about $5000-6000 per year down to $120 annually! Not to mention with a system this large we might end up with PG&E owing us money at the end of the year, depending on how much we use vs. how much we generate thanks to the Net Metering Plan! Mario was a great sales rep to walk us through the quote process, he spent about 45 minutes on our roof on his first visit and told us there were no big issues standing in the way of installation. His quote totally made sense and his advice aligned with thew research I did on my own. He was able to help us source all black panels to minimize the contrast of the panels relative the front roof of the house, which really made the difference for us! We also opted to put up a pool solar system to keep the pool in the temperature range we want for a more of the year. We are paying so much for pool maintenance at this point that it totally makes sense to get 3 more months of usage out of it in early spring and fall. The work was done in a little less than a week, and the system was operational in the same time window. Even PG&E moved quickly for us without Mario having to badger them, I got an email within one day after the application went in to them saying we were all hooked up. If you're thinking about doing Solar, I say do it. I can say that now with my "first hand" experience and having in hand - not a bill - but a credit from PG&E for the month of June. My panels generated a Million watt hours of Energy in the month of June. The challenge is to find the right company. If you're not careful, you could easily end up with a bad installation of the wrong stuff for too much money. There were no surprises later - like we'll need more money or need to make major design changes. I did have some concerns: my "light weight" roof tiles, main electrical panel, silver or black PV panels, micro or string inverter. At my convenience, Dean made a trip to the house. Dean is well-versed in the Solar industry - products and installation. With this one (pleasant) visit, Dean and I were able to finalize the design. It was obvious that they could and would deliver what I wanted - with no surprises. Dean was able to turn my "bad news about my electrical panel" into good news. The estimate of date of installation was accurate and they even gave me the option to start a week earlier. Doug and crew arrived first to cut a hole in my stucco wall and remove the old power panel. That was exciting! At the end of the day, I was left with a "thing of beauty!" Then Nick and his crew went to work. They arrived on a Monday morning and before noon on Friday everything was done. Nick is both a skilled worker and a dedicated worker. You worry sometimes about what someone might be doing "on your roof." That's not a concern with Nick and crew. They do good work. And Nick and Doug are lucky to have Rick - to deal with all the stuff that they don't want to deal with. Then a final visit from Doug to take care of (deal with) the city permit/inspection and paperwork; plus double-check all electrical connections and voila, it's done! I have a PG&E credit, instead of a bill and I'm "fueling my car with Sunshine!" A confession - my wife and I still go outside once or twice a week, just to watch the meter run backwards. read more

This review is long overdue, but working with Highlight Solar has been one of the best contractor experiences I ever had. I signed a contract with them in Spring of 2023. I chose them in part because they were the only company that gave me confidence that they could meet the NEM2 deadline that was fast approaching. Despite an extremely tight timeline -- my first contact with them was only a month before the deadline -- they executed like clockwork and got us in just under the wire, which we greatly appreciated. While of course it's too late now for NEM2, any company that can pull that off is highly worthy of your consideration. In addition to the flawless execution, their pricing was competitive, and they communicated extremely well and always let us know what to expect at each stage of the process. I can't recommend this company any more highly -- give them a call and you'll be glad you did! read more

I initially contacted Highlight Solar in May 2020 to get a quote for a ~5 KW solar system. They provided one of the best quotes - and were suggesting some of the best equipment (LG + Enphase micro inverters). I then contacted several roofing companies for quotes on the roofing, and the roofing company I choose stated that they had worked with Highlight Solar several times before - and were happy with their work. I got the roofing company to coordinate with Highlight Solar, so that they would install the racking supports on the bare roof, and the roofing company would do the flashing - this worked out well. The work was completed in August - as Highlight Solar had a long waiting list. The city inspections passed without issues. I've been very happy with the system over the last few months and haven't had any issues. read more

Several years ago Highlight Solar installed solar panels on my roof. I Couldn't be happier. They did an impeccably professional and detailed job with everything, even the install of a new breaker box. About two years ago I had a guy clean out my rain gutters and he noticed that a panel was cracked. (I often wondered if he didn't sit on it). I contacted Highlight and they replaced it right away. A couple of months ago I noticed that a second panel was now cracked. (the two were probably damaged at the same time) Anyway, I again contacted Highlight Solar, and again they came through for me. It took a while to locate a compatible panel, but the company kept in contact with me with updates. If anyone is thinking about installing solar for their home, I highly recommend Highlight Solar. 5 stars for sure. read more

I have used Highlight Solar for 2 major jobs in my house. First job was for PV solar panels installed in Aug 2019. Second job was solar panel installation for Pool Heating in April 2021. Dean, Leo, Chris and Sam are a wonderful team and did a great job. For PV panels, Leo came up with a perfect proposal based on my electricity needs. Installation team lead by Chris was very professional and completed the job on time. For Thermal Solar pool installation, once again, Highlight Solar provided a fair quote. Installation was done very efficiently and expedited for Summer swimming. Dean came by during the installation to ensure everything was proceeding smoothly. An employee with a personal issue did not schedule the final inspection on time, so the owner Dean called me personally to apologize. I said no problem and proposed to add 2 more panels. He quickly shared a fair quote and booked installation even during coronavirus shelter in place. The installer Chris came and was friendly and thorough. He noticed our panel ground was not connected to earth ground and so he added that. Dean updated that the city waived the update fee and they would pass on the savings. We contracted with Highlight Solar for new two new main electrical panels, relocating the main panels, pulling 3 new water heater wires, and two 5kWDC solar systems on our duplex home in Sunnyvale. - Highlight walked off our project with $36k of our money and left us with an unsafe (in our opinion and the opinion of other professionals we have since engaged) and not-to-code electrical installation, part of the job (new water heater wires) completely not done, and no inspections beyond meter release passed. - Highlight said that final inspection had passed on the electrical work. Upon contacting the city to understand how some of the work could have passed inspection, the city said that Highlight had cancelled the inspection and the city had not signed off anything. I verified with two city inspectors and the city clerk just to be sure there hadn't been a mistake or mix-up. Highlight later admitted the inaccuracy and apologized. - Highlight said that they had gotten an exception from the city for non-accessible splices in a stucco wall. It turns out this was not true. - Highlight refused to send a licensed electrician to fix the work and pass inspection. Their solution was to send another of their unlicensed guys and "one of our staff" (my husband or myself!) to help him complete the work. This turned out to be a 7-day job for a licensed electrician with a crew of 3 people. - Highlight did not pull permits from the city that included electrical service relocation, nor did they pull permits for the new water heater wires. We ended up having to pull new permits under our name. - About 10 moon-shaped holes were left on our brand new roof from conduit bending. There were also scuff marks from their boots working on hot days. It took about 1/2 day of roof repairs to repair the new roof. - Highlight said that PG&E said "No" to 200A main panels. All of the licensed electricians I later had out to inspect the work said PG&E couldn't have said no and encouraged me to ask myself. I ended up having to open a new application with PG&E, and PG&E said no problem, we can have 200A main panels. - Highlight said that we could have electric water heaters and EV chargers on our 100A main panels, including everything that was existing. Existing circuits included ACs, electric stoves, electric dryers, garbage disposals, dishwashers, plus normal outlet, lights & kitchen circuits. The nine(!) licensed electricians we had inspect the job after Highlight left said there is no way we can to-code add water heaters and EV chargers to our 100A panels. This would be an overloaded panel and the load calculation numbers would not work. So in order to have all of the electrification that we wanted, we would have had to have 200A main panels. This is why we had to contact PG&E ourselves and apply for 200A main panels. Highlight had also contracted with us to install 3 electric water heater wires, which they never did. - Highlight left the job with multiple electrical code violations that, in our opinion and the opinion of other professionals we have since engaged, put our health and safety at risk. This includes the following: No proper ground bond, "Tied & Hide" 30A, 240V electrical wire illegally spliced with tape (no junction box) and hidden up inside wall, Originally the house had two garage circuits - one 30A dryer circuit with 10AWG wire and one 20A washer/rest of garage circuit with 12AWG wire. Both wires were in one original conduit. Highlight tied these two circuits into one circuit and used 12AWG wire and a 30A breaker. The licensed electrician who found this said it would have melted had the washer and dryer been run at the same time. Luckily we didn't run them both at the same time, Too many wires in junction boxes, Junction boxes sealed with tape instead of proper covers, Wires exposed outside of junction boxes, No ARC fault breakers despite moving the electrical service location more than 6', Highlight moved the electrical service by themselves (without PG&E). Highlight did not properly secure the mechanical support for the electrical service, The original 15A lighting circuit was put on a 20A breaker, Inaccessible splices in front wall. - Highlight sold us fifteen LG 335W solar panels and marketed the system to us as 5kWDC (15*335W). However, Highlight installed Enphase IQ7 microinverters that clip at 250W. So in reality, the peak system performance is 3.75kWDC (15*335W). We never would have figured this out had we not had two independent solar consultants / companies come out and point it out to us. We have field data showing that the last week in September the output power clips from the microinverter at 250W for 4 hours per day. Normally customers can't see this in their data - they have to pay to upgrade the enphase app to see this. I have done business with Dean and his team at Highlight Solar three times over the last 8 years, and have always appreciated their ethical and professional business approach. Eight years ago they were a much smaller business than today, yet they impressed us with their value-oriented, intelligent offerings and customer service that were head and shoulders above what was offered by much larger companies. This last month, we discovered that a job that they installed for us in 2019 had a city building permit that was not closed out due to the city having no records of a completed inspection. I emailed Dean and he called me within the day even though his business was much larger and he had a much larger span of control now. It was not clear whether his staff forgot to schedule the inspection or the city lost those records, but the team went into action. They contacted city staff to learn that the old permit had expired. They were then told that a new permit had to be applied for, due to new requirements. They had to draw up a new plan to comply with newer building and electrical code. It also cost them a new permit fee. They did all that without any delay, scheduled the inspection, sent out a technician in advance to ensure that everything would pass, and got the inspection to pass without any difficulty or complication. I recommend Highlight Solar highly, as they not only get the job done professionally from the start, but if there is any error or unanticipated problems 4.5 years later, I can depend on them to set things right. read more

Highlight Solar installed solar panels 6 years ago and coordinated seamlessly with the roofing company in conjunction with a new roof. Recently they added 2 new circuits/breakers and 2 new outlets for level 1 and level 2 EV charging. Both times, we found the entire Highlight Solar team to be professional, friendly, responsive, and really easy to work with. Solar panels and inverters have worked well all these years and if we ever needed to add more panels, we would definitely work with them again. read more
