This is an amazing local find. Fresh gulf seafood is hometown cooking for a kid from the coast. I am so glad we found this place. The staff are friendly and attentive. The restaurant it self is unassuming and very casual. You will feel right at home here in shorts and flip flops. The food is the real gym. We had the grouper, and it tasted like it came off the boat that morning. Great flavor, tender and flaky, just like it should be. The season was on point, flavorful but not overpowering. I added the fried ahumó and glad I did. They were perfect. My wife added the crab cake, and that was excellent as well. Plenty of crab meat and not too much stuffing. Bottom line: going back to "The Ark" very dissatisfied with flavorless food and slow kitchen!!My son and I were told about this restaurant which is close to CMP Talledega Marksmanship Park. We have in past gone to "The Ark" A bit smaller, less emphasis on alcohol but excellent. We came fish market on way out of town since near Marksmanship park for "D Day" Rifle matches. Unfortunately, bottom line is the food was "OK" but IMHO we both agreed the food and service was much better at "The Ark" ; our meals tonight were bland and kitchen slow. Took almost 40 minutes to get our meal. My son's "chicken sandwich " was two chicken tenders. My 2 whole catfish dinner 1 side (green beans) was fresh hot but not much flavor. Service was good. The menu is very extensive with steaks etc . But menu was overwhelming too. While this may be popular with locals, we prefer "The Ark" smaller yet just as busy, better tasting food and more desirable sides and food came up much quicker. Traveled from Bessemer on a Saturday afternoon to try out this place on the recommendation of family, nice building with plenty of seating inside, old advertisements, old pictures and TVs lined the wall. Problem was, it was opening day of college football and most of the TVs were turned off. Parking lot was full, but when we entered only four tables were taken, weird. It could definitely benefit from more parking. Was greeted as soon as we walked in, we were greeted and told to pick a table, before we were seated a waitress was taking our drink order. The menu is loaded with several kinds of shrimp, ribeye steaks, catfish and much more. We had the alligator bites as an appetizer, you really can't mess up alligator so it tasted like every other place I've ever had alligator. I ordered the two piece catfish filet with fries and mashed potatoes (extra charge for gravy, why?) The catfish was fried hard, not my ideal way of eating it, but everyone is different. The taste was, like the alligator, just like every catfish plate I've ever had, what makes the difference is how you fry it so it lost points with me. The fries were surprisingly good, cooked soft and tasty. The mashed potatoes and gravy was meh, the gravy was just flavored water and the potatoes lacked any form of taste at all. The real problem is in the service area, when the waitress took our order she punched it into a handheld computer, when she delivered our order, two in our party received the wrong items. The waitress blamed it on the kitchen, saying she didn't know what the order was because "they" kept the ticket. After some confusion on her part, our order was made right. The positive of the service was she did keep my tea glass full. As 4pm approached the place did start to fill up with customers, so it must be a hit with someone. Overall, I don't know if I will be back, based on the bland food and the service, combined with prices on the high side of a mom & pop fish market, I'd rather drive to Top O' The River where I know I'll always get the best catfish around and quality service. read more

Visiting Alabama for the weekend with a group of friends. We all had the taste for seafood. The restaurant is located just off the highway in a gravel parking lot with lots of advertising signs lining the exterior of the building. Thanks for the GPS or we would have passed it. Inside is one open area with basic wooden tables and chairs. We were seated right away. Waitress said it was exceptionally slow evening. Service was excellent as she was attentive ensuring we were ok. Their menu had a nice variety for everyone more than what's posted on Yelp. Sorry, I didn't take an updated picture of it. Gulf Shrimp looked and tasted like regular shrimps from the grocery store. Nothing spectacular. Baked potato was good. Surprised they gave artificial whipped butter tho instead of real butter. Hush puppies were ok. One commented Mac n cheese wasn't that great but everything else was. Another commented the pasta was very flavorful but a bit watery and noodles overcooked. We didn't have any adult beverages so can't comment on it. Younger one had an ice cream sundae and said it was very good. Price was reasonable as well. We'll consider going back when in the area again. Recommend trying especially the catfish. read more

I would rate their food if it had been served. According to cashier my order was entered at 12:17. At 1:00 pm I attempted to pay for my lunch that never came. She did not end up taking my money. Three tables that came in after me had received food. One actually sent it back and it came out again. I realize they are busy but was there no reason this should have happened. read more

POPULAR Local restaurant and I know why!!! Service is stellar, the young Ladies were patient and kind, one even went made a new batch of coleslaw so I could have some. Ambience was family style and welcoming. Everyone was friendly. Fish was good, fried as request, you know ya girl likes her fish fried hard. The food was a little different than the average catfish restaurant. The fried catfish filets were fried really well, came out hot and delicious. The tartar sauce was apparently homemade. It was not just your mayo pickle base. It seemed to have either vinegar or lemon and was thinner than I've had before. It was just ok to me. The ketchup/tarter was also thin and a bit spicy. It was good with the crinkle fries. The catfish was, however ,great without any sauce. It had the taste of catfish like we used to catch and fry right out of the lake.The coleslaw had tomatoes chopped up fine and dill pickles. It was fresh and crunchy. Hush puppies need some work . They were out of Gumbo. The waitress said you have to come early as they often sell out. That tells me it's made fresh dairy and must be very good. I'll surely come back to try it. The food is truly amazing, and the service is excellent. The staff are just sweet people. The problem is that if you are black or in a black group, like a conspiracy, all the white diners, no matter how relaxed and chatty they were, will get up and leave almost at once. You will see a mass exodus of white people- the place will be nearly empty in short duration. Once it is clear to the white people that you, a black person, are going to eat there; the place will be empty out. All the white people will be gone at once, and you will be left looking at dirty tables and dutiful staff cleaning up the table. Maybe Alabama has not changed much. Alabama whites, as a rule, still do not want to eat with black people. I was shocked to verify this as not an isolated bu a community response. read more

This place came highly recommended from the RV park we were staying at and it had great reviews here so we decided to give it a try. It's a cozy little place right off the highway and we were greeted when we came in and told to seat ourselves. We sat down and waited, and waited, and watched another table sit and their server promptly took their drink orders and brought them menus while we still sat waiting. Finally our waitress (Nicole according to the ticket) came to us seemingly baffled that no one else came by and brought our menus out and took our drink order. We also ordered half dozen oysters rockefeller as an appetizer. Those came out and were placed in the center of our table but our waitress didn't bring any plates and didn't stop back by so we just passed the main serving tray around and took turns eating a couple. They were delicious but it would have been nice to enjoy them together with proper plates. Our main dishes came out and I will say the fried grouper, fried shrimp, and grilled shrimp were amazing! The other sides (hush puppies, Mac and cheese, corn nuggets, and fried okra) were all pretty good too, but nothing out of the ordinary. We finished our meals and then played the waiting game again. Our dishes were stacked and I was clearly holding my card in my hand trying to be subtle but letting it be known we were done but nothing. The two other waitresses noticed but said nothing and did nothing. Finally after about 10 minutes our waitress returned and apologized for the delay and brought our check. I would excuse this but there were only three tables seated and three waitresses so there's no reason we should have been kept waiting throughout our time here. If I based this review solely on the food it would easily be a 4 or maybe even a 5, but the crappy service is what brings it down to a 3 for me and we probably won't return to give it another shot. read more

Five stars everywhere! Every single thing we got was amazing!! We started with the Boudin Balls and I would have bet my life the owner was from Louisiana! Soooo good! Then I had blackened Grouper and Fried Shrimp plate. Bring your appetite or a friend! The prices are well worth the HUGE PORTIONS on the platters. You get two sides and the large fish portion, TWELVE shrimp, a crabcake (out of this world!), and four delicious hush puppies. I'm posting my to go box as well! So one of the side choices is a "sidewinder" I asked our bartender what that was and she said "it's where a steak fry and a curly fry get together and have a baby" NAILED IT and yummy!! My husband had the fried catfish and fried shrimp platter (same stuff and amounts as my plate). The food is insane! We sat at the bar and our bartender Carley had only been on the job 4 days, but she was amazing!! She was actually pretty knowledgeable and what she was unsure of, SHE ASKED! Then there is Eric, he owns the joint, very very hands on and personable! He wasn't afraid to get down and dirty. He shucks the fresh raw oysters himself and is super friendly.
