I was a bit disappointed in our meal. We ordered the scrod and gulf shrimp. The scrod portion was very small. The gulf shrimp were huge and the meal could have been shared. Terrible!!! 4 of us had the perch,about 4 blocks from Lake Erie because it was the thing to order when you are 4 blocks from Lake Erie. We all agreed that it was frozen fish that they had fried . The pieces all looked the same no meat, etc. Also we asked for grey goose, we're charged for grey goose but definitely did not get grey goose. We started with a bottle of Zinfandel, a dozen fresh oysters and Craberie ( crab cake , lobstertail and scallops) then our mains were sablefish & Icelandic haddock. Now the fishes were fresh (they were ship daily as we learned) However, the crumb seasoning on the fish were so bland it was as if its steamed plain. It was bland! While it didn't look like much from the outside, it was very clean and nicely decorated on the inside. We got there early, and the owner, a nice young man, came out and talked very cordially with us. A nice family owned seafood place just down Bridge Street from the Harbor. The lobster bisque is the best I've ever had outside of New England and the perch is always delicious. They run out of oysters, so be prepared for that. Depending on the waitress the service can be great or they'll act like your a bother, that the reason for the loss of a star. We found this cozy sea food restaurant nestled in the small town of Ashtabula Ohio near Walnut beach on Lake Erie. Lots of locals were dining here which is a great sign to me! The menu was extensive, the waitress and hostess were so friendly. The specials were posted on the board noting the local fresh catch of the day which sells out quickly. We both tried the local perch, lightly breaded and fried to perfection (so light and flaky!)paired with fresh broccoli and a delicious wedge salad. They had a nice wine list too! The dessert menu was so tempting but we didn't have any room left to try them. We really loved our date night as we were traveling and stopped here for supper and to see Lake Erie! It wasn't good. As you can see, the broccoli was cold - the butter wouldn't melt. The clams and calamari were over deep fried and very chewy. The fish and potatoes were bland. In the area for a few days of perch and walleye fishing. Definitely felt like some seafood. What a nice , clean, quiet, and tucked away place. A good selection of craft beers are a must for the hubs and we weren't disappointed. Our waitress was very friendly and explained, with great detail, many of the dishes and how they are prepared. I wish we were in the area longer to try more items. We started with the shrimp cocktail. They were large and nicely cooked. The cocktail sauce was spicy and plentiful. We also got a lobster bisque and New England Clam chowder. Hot and rich. I'd say we both favored the chowder but both were good. They also serve a basket of rolls and hush puppies. The perfect start to a nice dinner. With our entrees, we each chose a side salad with blue cheese. Can I say it may be the BEST blue cheese dressing I've ever had?!?! We literally each had a piece of blue that was the size of a shooter marble There was a fresh special of blackened Atlantic sea scallops. The scallops were also cooked great and were laid on an amazing light sauce. Chose a side a twice baked potatoes with bacon and broiled cheese... recommended. We also tried the shrimp tsunami with asparagus. Sooooo many shrimp and we both think the fried shrimp was the star. Lightly breaded, so crunchy, not oily, and the shrimp were not dried out and still moist and firm. Phew..... We. Are. Stuffed and highly satisfied. And the prices? Oof. Did not meet expectations. At all. While we did not have a reservation, the hostess put our name down and told us to come back 45 minutes later. Fine, no problem, you're busy. Totally understand on a Saturday evening. We leave to grab drinks elsewhere and come back at our scheduled time but don't get seated for another 15 minutes. Again, fine, you're busy, I get it. We get seated and sit for ANOTHER 20 minutes and no server has even acknowled us at this point. I say hello politely to the waitress handling the table next to us, and let her know we've been waiting for 20 minutes but have not been acknowledged. She has no idea who is responsible for our table but tells us she will serve us. 10 minutes later she comes back for our drink order, we put in an order for a bottle of wine. We've now been seated for 30 minutes. Been there for 45 minutes. Another 10 minutes goes by and we get our bottle of wine and are allowed to put our food order in. At this point it's been nearly 60 minutes. Our food comes out 45 minutes later, my husbands chicken is too dry to eat and the salmon I ordered is no better than the salmon I make at home. Plus it came with FOUR pieces of broccoli. We finish and leave two hours after our arrival. They had 18 tables with 3 servers total. Maybe someone called off. Maybe they're understaffed, not enough servers or cooks. I get it, it's 2024. But we were never once offered water until halfway through our dinner service by a DIFFERENT waitress. Only given a basket of two rolls while waiting for our food. It was never replenished while we waited nearly two hours for our entrees. Never asked how our food was. Literally given no attention at all besides when our order was taken and food delivered. We were asked at the end if we wanted dessert. DO YOU THINK WE WANT DESSERT AFTER SITTING THERE FOR TWO HOURS ALREADY?? I kind of did want to get the crème brûlée. But god that probably would have been another hour of waiting. People literally came and left while we were sitting there. I really wanted to like this restaurant, but after this experience, we won't be back. I'll just catch and grill salmon from home next time, it would take less time. I'm not a huge review writer but jeesh this place was just someone else. I've never experienced such horrible service. Our waitress never even introduced herself to us. But she made sure to explain the seafood boils that were on special! read more

For starters, I am from the south, and I have enjoyed a lot of really great seafood. I really would love to give this business 5 stars, but I want to be honest, so this is my honest review. I have visited Hil-Mak's, I'm guessing, 6-8 times. The truth is that it is hit or miss. Sometimes, the service is spot on, the food is incredible, and it a great experience. Other times, it has taken 15-30 minutes just to get our drinks. Which, when it is all adults, it's not the worst thing in the world, but we regularly take our grandchildren, who are 4, 6, and 8. That is a LONG time to wait for drinks when you have three children who are becoming hungrier and more impatient by the minute. I realize that is not "their problem". But, quite frankly, as a former waitress, I can't think of a legitimate reason why there would be a 15 minute wait for a waiter/waitress to address a table, and 30 minutes is just unfathomable. My favorite seafood is deep fried oysters. This is not a regular item on the menu, which is surprising to me since, almost all, restaurants in the south offer deep fried oysters. I also love fried scallops, which I believe they occasionally have as a special. Mostly I order a combo platter that is similar to what you would get at Red Lobster. It's good, most of the time, but I do find that sometimes it is greasier than others, and the portions are not always the same. Bottom line is that I would recommend trying this place out. Hopefully you will land here on a good day. If you do, you won't be disappointed. I will keep going back unless I find a better option in the area. Difficult to find; set back from the road at a 'y' corner, but a great find. Nice green salad with house made Italian dressing, very good and fresh. This restaurant has fresh seafood. One of the few places I ran into during my stay that offered higher end seafood. I ordered the Shrimpster and was very impressed. The lobster tail was rather large, the grilled shrimp was flavorful and there was plenty of them and the scallops were large. I ordered the twice baked potato and while it was good, I thought it would have been better if offered fully loaded with sour cream, chives and bacon pieces. The lobster bisque was out of this world! I did not give the full 5 stars because the hours are limited and they opened a bit late. The food was excellent and service was great. . .once it happened. The poor server was all alone in the dining room trying to stay on top of the orders and bus tables. It took over 90 minutes to get the meals but that's no fault to the server and I'm assuming the chefs were also low staffed. I've had a lot of smoked salmon in my time and this was the best ever. So fresh, not fishy at all. Almost buttery. Lobster bisque was super rich and creamy. I had the lake perch my husband had the walleye. Both were really good, not fishy, just super fresh and flaky. I had the twice baked potato too which was smooth, cheesy and smoky. Oh yeah, forgot the side salad, the dressing was sooo good, tasted homemade. I had french and hubby had blue cheese. And the rolls!! So yeasty, warm and delicious. Whenever we visit Ashtabula, we eat at least once at Hil-Mak. Once again it was excellent (we were told it was new owners). The food is always very good in the old seafood house tradition. We purchased a Erie fine dining card which includes several restautants in northeastern OH and Northwestern NY. So far we have had some great experiences. Now the review! We decided to try Hil Mak based on the reviews. I have a hard time eating fish in this area because i lived on Cape Cod for 3 years and it's really hard to beat the seafood you get over there. The restaurant itself is very nice and modern inside. Our reservation was at 7:00 and we were seated right away..the dining room was packed but "socially distanced" because what isn't now a days... It took a few minutes for our waitress to wait on us but she was really nice and excited about the food she was selling. I had the Islandic Scrod which turned out to be Hadock because they were out of scrod. I ordered it with the butter crumb topping. I had a side salad and brocolini as my sides. The salad was a little underwhelming, mostly iceberg lettuce. She also asked if i wanted feta cheese on my salad which i don't normally get but she talked me into it. I didn't realize it was an upcharge. The Hadock was ok. It was cooked well but not seasoned well. My wife ordered the salmon blackened. The fish was seasoned well and tasted really good! She also had a salad and brocolini. Her salad seemed to have a little mixed greens. All in all it was a nice date night. We will probably get back again This year. read more

The restaurant reminds me of the former Captain Frank's in Cleveland. They have a fabulous fresh seafood selection daily. Our fried shrimp is cleaned and battered every single day. I am a coleslaw snob and their's is a 10 plus! The place is small but great for a family. The lunch and dinners prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food and service was a 10. When you love seafood, you want something that really stands out, and this place is all that and then some. I went to the restaurant once and it was wonderful, I had the fried calamari and my friend was in the mood for steak. Everything, from walking in to checking out was the best. I do go to the Market more often, and I love the camaraderie between the employees and the customers, also that I can choose whatever I want from a large selection and it's made right there, nice and fresh while you wait.
