This restaurant has a good location in Hill City. The service was the highlight of my visit. Our server was a young man that was attentive and took very good care of us. The food is pretty average...a greasy spoon kind-of-place. It'd be nice if they had a few "lighter" options.

This is the raw cold beef that was served to us as a "medium rare rib eye steak" . We paid $76 for 3 entrees.

I was willing to accept slow service on a Thursday night, especially when there is a Help Wanted sign in the front window. However, after waiting nearly 30 minutes, the "medium rare" steak was completely uncooked and cold to the touch. It was not edible. I stopped my son from eating after two bites when he said it was cold. They would not offer a refund or replacement. So after paying $35 for the steak ($76 total bill for 3) , we found ourselves buying anything we could find at 9:00 in the grocery store for my starving son.

GREAT Mango margarita! Yummy steak ends. We loved it so much we went back for dinner. My burger was yummy & cooked just right. Hubby LOVED the grilled chicken.

We were touring the area via motorcycle and happened to be in HIll City looking for a late lunch. Another place a few doors down was filled with people (drinking, not eating) so we decided to go the "Cafe less-traveled" route and wandered in to the Hill City Cafe. The server was cheerful and prompt. I ordered a "Prime Rib Dip" that was rather short on the prime rib, but tasty nonetheless. Came with a salad bar that was fresh and had a variety of options. My wife had a turkey wrap that was reportedly tasty. Check was reasonable, even though I had a Bloody Mary (with LOTS of garnish) and my wife had a vodka and soda. She originally asked for a Myers's Dark Rum and Ginger Ale.. but apparently they don't know about Ginger Ale in SW SD? Server said: "Um... we have Ginger BEER..?" No worries, it was a good lunch and a good choice of venue.

Stopped here on 8-11-2024 A really great place to eat. Our waitress was awesome. All the servers helped each other and were so nice. The Frog-legs are delicious. Really impressed with all the food. Big servings for a great price. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The whole place was so clean. Can't recommend this place enough

Food and service were both mediocre, won't probably visit again. Expensive for what it was.

I had the Walleye Chermoula, and all I can say is...wow. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the subtle North African spices in the chermoula complemented the walleye without overpowering it. It was one of the best dishes I had on the entire trip. As always, we travel with a long list of dietary restrictions. My wife has gluten and dairy allergies, while I manage Alpha Gal syndrome, a tree nut allergy, and diabetes. Our server was outstanding. I didn't write down her name, but she took the time to understand our food sensitivities, answered our questions, and made sure we were comfortable with our meal choices. The attentive service really elevated the experience. The restaurant has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. It would work well for a casual business lunch or dinner, and families with small children should feel comfortable here as well. Its location is another plus. It's just off the main tourist area in downtown Custer, making it easy to walk to after exploring the shops, and there is convenient parking nearby. This was an easy five stars for us. If you're near Custer, Custer Wolf should be on your short list. Highly recommended.

When I went inside to the bar to pick up my order, there were two male bartenders working. One was deeply engaged in a lengthy conversation with another customer about different beers, while the other appeared to overlook me, even though I was the only other person waiting. After standing there for a while, I finally spoke up and let him know I was there to pick up a takeout order, and he then assisted me. We ordered the bulgogi dish. It was decent, though it was more of a stir-fry than the traditional bulgogi I was expecting. Overall, the meal was okay, but it didn't stand out enough that I would make a point of returning.

I started with the spicy mango marguerita, stirred (they didn't have a blender) and it was delish. Just the right spicy/sweet. We ordered the Rocky Mountain Oysters for appetizers. Can't remember what they called it, but it had black beans, corn, cheese and jalapeños with a cilantro ranch dressing, with a choice of protein for an additional charge. My son enjoyed his sliders and said the soup, which tasted like a creamy corn chowder, was awesome. Definitely worth the trip and I hope to wander this way again.

My husband ordered the street corn rice bowl, which sounded delicious on the menu but missed the mark entirely and didn't match the menu description. The chicken was so overcooked it was completely dried out, the 'cilantro lime' rice was just plain white rice, the street corn was not charred at all, it was a can of corn dumped on the bowl, the jalapeños were not pickled. My daughter and I split the chicken tenders and they were very good. Our server never came back to check on how the food was, so my husband ate his because it was late and he was hungry but would've been nice if our service cared to check on us.

Absolutely loved Skogen! We are on a road trip back to Michigan with a weekend stop in Deadwood and decided to add a stop in Custer this time around as well and, gratefully and thankfully, we were able to secure a reservation. Again, Skogen was AMAZING! We sat in the outside patio area which was cozy and comfortable. Because I have acclimated to 115 degrees in Arizona summers, the 79 degree temperature was a bit chilly so I grabbed a super warm blanket that was supplied and they offered to turn on the heaters. I know it sounds ridiculous to most people who travel to South Dakota. Honestly, Arizona ruins you for everywhere hahahhah. Anyway, I thought it was super kind for them to make me comfortable! It was greatly appreciated! Service: Our server, Curtis, was fantastic! He catered to our every whim! He was personable and friendly and we had a very nice conversation. He helped me decide the best entree between two of my choices and it sure didn't disappoint! Excellent service! Food: The hubby and I shared the lobster steam buns were phenomenal. I mean, if you're reading this and you're going to Skogen, don't hesitate. Just order them. I wasn't a fan of Hollandaise prior to trying theirs, so I asked for it on the side. I literally could have licked the Hollandaise sauce. It was light, airy and absolutely scrumptious! The lobster was delicious and delicate and perfect! We both said we could have eaten the entire four buns by ourselves--and not shared! They were incredible! I had the halibut with asparagus and fingerling potatoes. It was absolutely delicious! The hubby had the duck confit. The white bean preparation with the smoked bacon was amazing but the duck---what magic have you created? It was tender with crispy skin and so moist! Dessert was shared and consisted of the chocolate cheesecake with pistachio ice cream. Unbelievable! So delicious! We had the honor of meeting the owner, Joseph, and shared a wonderful conversation with him. We loved his passion and enthusiasm for his craft, his love of people and we never felt like he was rushing to get back to doing what he needed to do. We truly felt like we were guests at his own home dinner table, sharing stories. It was really a lovely experience from start to finish. Starter and food, drinks, etc., are brought promptly to the table. This is exceptional in a highly popular tourist area. The food is good but could use a little improvement--the grilled mahi-mahi was good, but a little on the dry sauce and definitely needed a sauce. A couple of the dishes did have sauces, but fish is why most Creole restaurants like Brennan's will serve a sauce on the side, or a topping with butter such as Trout Almandine. It doesn't have to be a fancy sauce--the option of good ol' tartar sauce works. The grilled vegetables also needed a little more butter and seasoning. Carrots are good on their own; broccoli and cauliflower need a little cheese or butter and some seasoning to be loved. The IPA (Long John) was excellent. The beer cheese dip and soft pretzels were to die for; the chardonnay was passable. A great choice for dining in a VERY heavily traveled tourist destination.
