We had a really great experience at Powder House Restaurant! The ambience is really nice, and the menu has some unique options that make it a fun place to try. We started with the appetizer featuring unique meats, which was really cool and something different to try. We also got the artichoke dip. I personally wish it had been a spinach artichoke dip, but it was still really good! I ordered the steak, which was also delicious and cooked well. If you're visiting Mount Rushmore and looking for a place to eat before or after your visit, I can't say enough about the Powder House restaurant. It is a must stop. Service was really good from the time I called to be added to the waitlist to our hostess all the way to our server. The food came out at a reasonable time. Ordered: -Kids spaghetti -Kids cheeseburger and fries -Ribeye- a little chewier but still a great cut. -Prime rib made perfectly very flavorful I was super surprise and highly recommend prime rib if you are a prime rib fan. It comes with two sides which I got to pay extra and ordered the garlic fries. Overall, I highly recommend stopping by here to dine. I have no complaints whatsoever. It was actually the best meal I have had during my visit to this state. When my sister in law recommended this spot, I did not think that I would have enjoyed it as much as I did. Just because there is not much food options in the area and I didn't think that this spot could produce really good food since I am from California and am a foodie. If you are around the Mt Rushmore area looking for a great meal, stop here. They had a ribeye special the evening we were there. They let us split it and it was all wonderful. Salad was fresh and the dressings were homemade. Can be a bit noisy because of being right by the highway, but a great place. read more

So who wins GF meal of the year on my travel list??? This place!! And we've done three road trips this year, where finding safe food is such a difficult task. When you realize that the new owner is a celiac, and is training all of the staff to attend to allergies, it makes for a very safe environment. There is a GF menu on the back to show which of the meals can be made GF. For our dinner, we ordered the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms as the appy, and the Chicken Alfredo and the Bacon Wrapped Bison Meatloaf as mains. Everything was superb, and when the waitress brought out warmed GF bread from the Goodies GF Bakery in Black Hawk (near Rapid City), we had to ask twice if they were GF! That bakery is owned by the lodge owner, and we chatted with her afterward, purchasing some dinner rolls, hamburger buns, and a cinnamon roll to go!! Asked for medium rare prime rib. Got the driest prime rib I have had in awhile. They gave me the end of the roast that's is not medium rare no blood just dry. Definitely not impressed. Ordered crab stuffed mushrooms there were 4 and mostly stuffed with cheese and served cold. Got twice baked potato with an upcharge also not great. Don't think I'd come for prime rib. Let me start by saying that the service was OUTSTANDING and I feel badly leaving a negative review, but I think future guests need to know: we left our meal completely confused by the overwhelming positive reviews. Nothing was outstanding; at best, the mozzarella sticks were "fine" and the fries were "good." All of the food could have been improved. The chicken Alfredo was not just bland; it was actually so "off" in flavor and the chicken seemed like it was pre-packaged processed meat. My daughter barely touched it and I agreed with her. The bison burger was rather dry and the only thing saving it was the cheddar and bacon on top. None of the food seemed to be fresh. We've heard ownership recently changed and this might be part of the issue. Hopefully they can figure things out because it has potential and the staff is lovely. read more

Why, oh why is this restaurant in South Dakota, 1500 miles from my home? I guess I'm better off. If it was up the street, I would be broke and my doctor would be yelling at me about all the red meat I was eating. I love game meats and this menu has an entire section devoted to this. First night I had the Elk and Buffalo medallions. Game meat can be dicey to cook because it has no fat at all so if cooked wrong it can be dry. No so here. They were both so tender and juicy. My husband had the ribeye. It was WOW! So tender. We are only here for two nights so we came back and had the quail. Also delicious! And for this quality of food, it was VERY reasonably priced. This place is charming and great food! We had dinner here three times this week and today they opened for the season for lunch. We decided to go again! I had a delicious BLT salad. My husband had a "Brotherly Love Burger" with a side of coleslaw. He said it was outstanding. The burger sported Swiss cheese, peppers and mushrooms. The service was very good and friendly and professional. It's worth the 1/2-hour drive from our house. Expensive, but competitively priced for similar restaurants. Wonderful ambience for a date night in this older cabin restaurant. Waitstaff was very friendly and interacted sweetly with our boys. There aren't many highly rated eateries among the cluster that is close to the Mount Rushmore landmark, however this place is just a mile or two outside of that--totally worth it. Powder House (also their lodging) has been around for decades and the patio views are breathtaking. Our server was adorable, energetic and helpful (forgot her name, sorry!). I ordered the Queso burger, subbing a side salad (a little small perhaps) for fries, which was crisp and delicious with (I'm guessing) homemade ranch dressing. The burger's attention to detail included crispy crumbled bacon, crunchy dill pickles, Queso (could have used more imo), jalapenos, and the ever sublime toasted Brioche bun. My powder house steak tasted pretty dry for medium doneness, it's just very underwhelming. My husband had the Buffalo and it came out medium rare, wait staff didn't ask how he wanted it cooked so we assumed it was all 1 type of temp, my husband had to send it back. The night special ribeye came out nice according to my daughter but she said it's "average good" . We got curious of the high rating, we tried it.
