So our son is 21 now and we decided to take him on a tour of NJ dive bars - we showed him some of the best, and then we ended here and literally scared him. It was...exactly as it ALWAYS is. We arrived on a Friday night, thinking there might be some folks in there... Walk in - all lights off save the light directly above the bartender. Two people at bar, who I believed were the owners or the folks that live on property or whatever. Two beers and a jack daniels - 34 dollars! I have no idea how the hell this place is still open. I have no idea WHY the hell this place is still open. I don't understand comments about the great customers as in my 3 visits I have yet to see more than a single other customer. Just don't go here. Just don't do it. I get it, it's a bar in the middle of nowhere, but if you want a decent bar, a decent dive, or even a shitty one of either of the above, this isn't it. read more

We've been here a few times, the most memorable being the pig roast last autumn, in which we dressed our 1 month old as a bear. It's a tavern that caters to the biker crowd, with decent food (medium rare is medium rare, though the fries were a little soggy and the French dip wasn't great) and cold drinks. On a hot summer day, what you really want is a great cold drink, with something to soak up the alcohol, and this place wins. It's not as hip as Zeitgeist in San Francisco, but it doesn't need to be. No one here is pretentious and it's really laid back and comfortable. If your baby's sock falls off, someone will let you know. Oddly family friendly, though I don't think I'll take my baby back once it gets dark out, though it's definitely the type of place I'd love to go to if I wanted some real shots (not silly, girly shots, btw). 4 beers and 2 entrees set us back $30, including tax and tip, while the pig roast, with all sides included, was about $10/head for fantastic pulled pork+all sides (all you could eat), with tap beer ~$2-4/ice cold pint. HILLBILLY HALL, yes, that's truly the name of this place, tucked in the woods of the Sourland Mountains, up above the town of Hopewell. God this place is a gem. And I'm so pleased to be the first to review. Hillbilly Hall is a restaurant and bar. The bar area features a huge square bar, pool table, popcorn machine, darts and video games. The bartenders are always very friendly and attentive, even if you're not a regular. And they make nice, strong cocktails. The hamburgers this place serves up are amazing. The rest of the food is decent enough. Every Tuesday is country line dancing - hee haw! - and karaoke on Fridays. They also host a bunch of various events throughout the year including pig roasts, prime rib nights and live bands. You'll find a lot of bikers, hunters and local-yokels hanging here. The crowd, well, it's Hillbilly Hall. What do you expect? But don't be intimidated by the name, everyone is welcome. Seriously, check it out. read more

Hillbilly Hall is like one of those nightmares that you're not quite sure how to feel about. It wasn't necessarily scary, but you'd still classify it as a nightmare. BIKER FRIENDLY! I arrived at this location for a biker event and we occupied the entire restaurant. I would have given an additional star but the restrooms were no fully functioning, which created a very long wait. They clearly though out our arrival and had a pre-determined menu with a soup or chili option and 5 or 6 sandwich choices as well. They had self serve coffee waiting to relive the wait staff. The sandwiches included grilled chicken, pulled pork, and an open faced ruben to name a few. Our orders were taken and received promptly by a very friendly server. The chili was a little loose but flavorful. My grilled chicken was juicy n tasty and served on a soft roll, with fries and a side of slaw. Everyone in our group, which included 10 people, enjoyed their meals. It's always great when a place takes the time to chose a menu that pleases the masses but can be produced quick, especially when you have to serve hundreds quickly. Great job! This place was disgusting. The bartender was the waitress/hostess/server/cook. I should of known better than to stay there, the parking lot was empty. There was only one table in the entire place filled. Hubby and I decided to stay and try it anyway, they were out of practically everything on the menu. We ended up with nasty potato skins, I think they were frozen shoprite brand thrown in the fryer. Slow service, flat beer, juke box was disconnected. I don't understand how they can say open? I can honestly say this was the worst establishment we have ever been to. read more

Every so often I watch a bit of Kitchen Nightmares and I wonder if it's actually legitimate...like seriously how could a place so bad stay in business? Well, I found one. The waitress advised that they are known for their reubens - I ordered one. What I received was a greasy pile of corned beef with what looked like...maybe a mixture of some type of cheese and sauce on top of it, with no bread to be seen. I stuck my fork under the pile and lifted it up and initially thought that I was just given a pile of meat with stuff on it. Another look proved otherwise - there was a single slice of bread that was completely and thoroughly soaked through with whatever water/grease/liquid that was there. I would have had a much more pleasant (and less expensive) meal if I had gone to any number of chain fast food restaurants. The fries were alright, though! read more

How on earth does this place have 4 stars? I've been 1 time and I will never make that mistake again. The Draft beer was flat, bar food decent at best, and the place has a stench of burned food. I would highly recommend that you don't make the stop unless horribly desperate. read more

If I could give it less than 1 star I would. This places sucks! I should have walked out as quickly as I walked in - Friday night and not single person in the dining room. After a day of exploring the area, we decided to stop and eat. It was a beautiful day, the place was empty, we decided to sit on the patio. Yes, the place is a bit rustic, but it fits the name! I was with my husband, and my two sons. I got the open face rueben, it was not a healthy choice but I enjoyed it. My son had the fish an chips ( wish I got that), he ate everything except the carrots. My other son and husband got a burger , looks like the burger was freshly made. The fries were extra crisp ( the way I like them). It's nice to find a place that is not pretentious and is reasonably priced. It is a neighborhood bar with bar food!! 45 minute wait for food, pizza was shit, and unless you are starving with nothing to do all day, don't come here.

This place is a dump. Dark and smells inside. You can hardly see. My menu was old and had food particles stuck to it. Ate here twice but never again. First time ordered a club sandwich. Hardly any turkey on it. Bread was awful. Second time had a burger. They offer no chips or potato salad, only soggy fries or you can pay extra for onion rings. Burger was good but the bottom half of the bun was thoroughly soggy and disintegrated. They don't even toast the bun. Bad part was my rings tasted like fish cuz the clown in the kitchen uses the same frying oil for everything. On the way home my brother mentioned his chicken wings also had a fish flavor. I recently moved to Hopewell, NJ. My boyfriend, who has lived in this area for years and I had lunch at Hillbilly Hall last week. Never before have I written a review on Yelp; however, our dining experience was so atrociously unsanitary- I can't believe this is acceptable in my new home town. I was surprised when we walked in around 2ish to find the waitress/bartender smoking behind the empty bar and even more surprised when she came over to greet us and was visibly intoxicated. But she was friendly, and I could have over looked that. I walked over to the popcorn machine, and was too grossed out by its appearance to even put my hand into it, let alone eat anything that would come out of it. It's filthy and filled with old popcorn (first in first out anyone?) If only we had left then. The menu had old dried food particles all over it. My boyfriend ordered a bar pie. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, where I could not get the hot water to work. When I asked the bartender about it (who was now gulping draft beer out of a plastic cup she was hiding behind a blender) she told me "yeah, sometimes the hot water doesn't work". Um...then how are they washing the dishes and glasses? When the pizza arrived we asked for parmesan cheese. I sprinkled it on one slice, and smelled something that reminded me of blue cheese. After a closer inspection, I noticed the parmesan cheese had dark green/blue mold growing on it inside of the shaker. Check please. I wish that was where this horribly unsanitary experience ended. Finally, as we were gathering the money for the bill (and politely refusing a box for the untouched pizza) a young man appeared from a door by the popcorn machine in pajama pants and a tee shirt AND NO SHOES OR SOCKS. He then went BEHIND THE BAR and helped himself to a drink. Tell me I'm dreaming.
