NOT A DIVE BAR, this place has just re-opened. They probably need to open for lunch so the business people can come here. It's lovely inside and the food was great, bartenders were attentive, granted it was fairly empty on a Sunday evening. I will be coming here again since I live around the corner for the next month! Joe's Mill Hill Saloon has been holding up the southeast corner of Broad & Market Streets in Trenton, NJ for decades, and aside from some refurbishing it continues to be an attractive barroom and dining venue as authentic as the day is long. Large rectangular dark mahogany bar with stools for more than twenty. High tin type ceiling that show its age. Large beveled mirror with the Joe's logo etched in. On a late winter afternoon with the western sun blindingly pouring through the windows, the setting is good enough to be part of a Raymond Chandler novel. I took a seat on a stool facing the Christmas adorned mirror. The barkeep must have been behind the well for twenty years; older but none the worse for wear. The menu still offered soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and cheesesteaks, but the beer selection was way better than I remembered. Old Brown Dog Smutty Nose Draft. Yeah! Why not? It went down cold and biting, just as its name suggested. The house Build Your Own Burger was constructed with American, fried onions & mushrooms, and sliced jalapeño. Medium rare, and delicious. Fresh cut fries slightly undercooked, but still thickly good. Very glad it's right down the street from my new office for the next time I'm feeling like Dashiell Hammett. read more

Hands down one of my favorite bars ever. Great food, great bartenders, great crowd. Mark me down as a "regular."

We bought a Groupon and visited this establishment after the museum and planetarium....I must say , we were quite pleased! The gentleman who was the bartender , was also our waiter....he was extremely hospitable and helpful. He helped me choose a local draft beer... He was quite knowledgeable on the local breweries etc. Our food was tasty and the portions were strikingly grandiose for such a low price range. The regulars seated at the bar were awfully friendly as well, the greeted us upon arrival and departure. read more

If for some reason a band you like is playing here you should go because you will be no more then 20 feet away from them at any given time. Other then that I don't know much about this place. I guess there's more to it then just the basement I saw Swashbuckle in. Swashbuckle - A Metal band that only sings about being Pirates! I recall they were selling PBR's right out of a 30 pack at the show. I don't know if there were any other options. Next time I'm passing through Trenton maybe I'll try the food. The neighborhood is really dicey. I wouldn't stick around too late and make sure you go with a few people. Locals have been known to make trouble (a few of my friends were harassed outside the place). The place's open mic/jam night sucks. It's one of the worst I've ever been to. No rhyme or reason, no organization. I don't even think there was a microphone. The Halloween party last year was pretty fun, though, and the place was packed. The beer selection was nice, as well. Who else has Wolavers Oatmeal Stout on tap? When it's busy the place has a cool NYC dive bar feel. The bands are usually at least decent. But when it's dead...and it's dead often...it's not fun at all. Plan ahead by checking their website for special events. This way you'll at least have chance of not getting burned. read more

This place is SUPER fun! I enjoy Tuesday nights here, there is a basement bar that attracts a younger crowd and lots of live/local music and art performers. This is a great place for people who like to spin props. Upstairs they'll do trivia, karaoke and more. There is a very friendly and welcoming spirit here. I once came for a trivia night and partnered with a girl I'd never met and we had a great time, although we didn't win. People actually come from a great distance to hang out here. Prices are very affordable and street parking nearby. I've never eaten here but food from the kitchen looks amazing, and people will even bring food down to the basement at times. A lot of people hang out in the stairwell out of the basement to have a smoke at times, but it's a very friendly environment. My favorite is all of the outfits I see people wear, I always feel like this is my favorite place to just dress up in playful looks. read more

Awesome dark, dive bar that is a Trenton staple. It's a very popular lunch and Happy Hour spot with state workers. They frequently feature live music, especially a lot of jazz, have a huge beer selection, and serve food. I've never had the food, but I hear it's good. The only downside is the area is a bit if-y. Definitely park close by. But a great place to stop after an event at the Sovereign Bank Arena. read more

Came out here for drinks w/ some friends. Dive bar in a dicey location.. Music selection is awesome and there are many good beers on tap. The bar upstairs is an old atlantic city bar transplanted to Joe's from the 30s. One of the oldest bar/restaurants in Trenton. The upstairs huge and the downstairs is tiny. Awesome place, awesome people but try to park close by. Bonus: Bartender gave everybody free Jameson's shots for sport. Definitely will go back. read more

Refill my iced tea and I might give you 4 stars. I'm thirsty and you're not busy so WTF? Otherwise the food was better-than-average. I had a serviceable Philly Cheesesteak with FFs. So I can't speak for the upstairs bar and restaurant but a friend brought me here for a punk show in the basement... I mean it's Trenton so I had pretty low expectations but it was pretty freaking great... the bartender was attentative and cool, the draft list was shockingly good (let alone for a basement dive), the crowd was friendly and fun... and the music was pretty damn good! Do the people rating this so low and complaining about it being a dive bar not have the ability to read? It does say dive bar right in the description. I like the place. Although I don't drink, my companions have always said the draft list is good. I find the food to be good, the prices reasonable and the service fine. The upstairs bar and eatery is where we have visited the most. i have always had good experience here and I like the atmosphere. The downstairs punk/music bar is a bit loud and cramped. If that is your scene, you will find the crowd is ok and the service is not bad at all. I think if the menu was expanded a bit upstairs and maybe a little more live music was there they might be a solid 5 read more

Oh my dear Lord. I tried to warn my family this place wasn't meant for a group lunch but they wouldn't listen to me until it was too late. To make matters worse I had to listen to them complain about it! Our food tasted like toilet bowl water and I'm not exaggerating. The host was the server and the bartender and the chef. I was treated very disrespectfully by a bartender here for no reason, some wise-ass in his 20s. On another occasion, my car was robbed while parked down the block. Yet another night, some loud rock band was playing here, and the music sucked. If the beer were free, I wouldn't come into this joint. read more

Not only does the service sucks, but they are hell bend on featuring the same acts all the time... it seems that they have their own little click of performers. They all know each other and for that reason alone, whether they suck or not (and 50% of them do suck), they seem to be the only ones filling up the Mill Hill's booking agenda. There's plenty of good local talent willing to play for peanuts if the opportunity was given... Help support good local music people; not just the same cliché acts that they keep bringing to this establishment just because they know the bar tender, or the booking agents or some one within that circle. read more
