After an interesting morning touring the railroad district in town, we went to lunch at the Hillcrest. The restaurant has the diner feel to it, which is okay. They were outstanding. 3 corn tortillas with burnt cheddar cheese grilled to them, stuffed with shredded beef, lettuce, and salsa. Just an amazing combo of tastes that could only be born in a recipe a long, long time ago. I had the tamales smothered in green pork chile stew. If my grandma was from New Mexico, and I was sick, THIS is the comfort food she would make. Sweet masa, shredded beef in red chili adobo, smothered in shredded pork and green chile stew with enough heat and tanginess to make all your tastebuds happy. This place is terrible. Service was nice but the food is disgusting. My mom ordered a tuna sandwich, prepare yourself for cat food. My husband ordered the fried chicken. It looked good...too bad the inside was raw. The potato soup is loaded with green Chile. Tasted ok but spicy. I ordered the grilled chicken with chilies and tomatoes. It was gross. The rice was soggy. The chicken was hard and inedible. The tomatoes were soggy and best of all, they serve it with peas and carrots for a can. For $13 EACH go somewhere else. We had the famous burnt tacos and the smothered chicken fried steak. Both meals were ok, but not something we would ever order again. The cheese wrapped taco was a good idea, but it needed to be crunchy. Instead it was chewy greasy cheese that made the taco shell soggy. The chicken fried steak smothered in green Chile could have been good, but the Chile was not very flavorful. So overall the food is ok, but not really enough to make me ever want to try this restaurant again. read more

This place is a joke. Worst place we have eaten in the last 20 days of our road trip. BLT was super crunchy...over toasted bread and no Mayo on it. Packets of Mayo on the side but a BLT should be loaded with Mayo. Waitress asked what kind of bread I wanted on my chicken club and I said rye. When I got it it was on a hamburger bun. Again a totally dry sandwich. I had to ask for 1000 to put on it. When we got there there were only a couple of other tables filled, all of which had their food. I did not like this place at all, the soup was cold had no flavor, when I got the fried chicken and my potatoes i realized I regret even coming here and should've just gone to kfc for my fried chicken. They have a great staff but the owners of the restaurant are not to be seen in the restaurant only when they are being pushy on their staff. Pretty horrible experience overall. Took over an hour to get our food and my sons grilled cheese was burnt - his "chocolate" milk contained no chocolate, my burger was cold and the chicken fried steak and enchiladas were average at best and didn't come with the sour cream he ordered. The staff was clearly disinterested. Compounding this less than pleasurable experience was a juke box at the table that didn't work and a restroom that was small and dirty. As an FYI the only cheese they serve is American - not sure how you make Mexican food with American cheese. On the plus side, we never ever have to visit here again. read more

The restaurant we originally planned to go to was a bit too far out of town, so driving by this one we thought we're hungry let's stop here. Its right next to a biker bar but we decided to overlook that and I am glad we did. This is a Classic cafe / diner hangout complete with those Wurlitzer mini jukeboxes at some of the tables. The tables themselves are a very homey fake burled wood formica. Full bar and they just added Stella Artois (in the Stella glass) to the beer list. The BLT I got was very good cafe style sandwich. My husband ordered a whiskey sour and it came in a very 70s looking little glass. Next time I must try the burnt cheese taco! read more

First I'll start by saying it's pretty encouraging when walking in the restaurant when we're met by an exiting customer commenting how awesome the food is!! Upon entering, the place was packed, which was a good sign, but this led to what seemed to be some overwhelmed staff. Nobody greeted us and we stood there for a bit waiting to see if we should sit or wait to be seated. Finally a gentleman asked us to sit where we wanted and this led another couple, who were also waiting, to get up and leave. After this, everything else went just fine. Stopped here wanting a break from fast food on our trip. Saw the 4 star reviews and had high hopes. We waited in line for about 15 minutes for dirty tables to be cleaned. Once seated the waitress came quickly to get our drink order, then we waited another 15 minutes to order, she just disappeared. I ordered chicken fried steak with red chile. The steak was good, the red chile tasted burned. My husband ordered red chile chicken enchiladas. The chicken was dry and same bitter red chile. Once we ordered, the food came out fairly quickly and the service improved. Once we finished, the waitress was quick with our bill to get us out. Don't come here thinking it will be fast. Very very disappointed in this place. Food really had no flavor. I had the Brunt Cheese Tacos with shredded beef, they were swimming in grease. Grease ran down my arms as I ate them. Way too greasy for my taste. They overdo it with the cheese and fill the taco with cheese also apart from what's on the shell. Too much! I also ordered a side of beans that were lacking salt. Tacos were $8.95 and beans side was $1.40. My wife had the enchilada skillet that was the special of the day at $10.95. They too were swimming in grease and didn't come with any sauce, just cheese. They also forgot to add the beef which the waiter had to bring separately after we told him there was only cheese. I'm not sure how this place had 4 stars, I guess the people that have given past reviews must like cheese because that's all you get here. This place is also overpriced for the quality. Place needs a hand all over the windows. Seriously. Their carte reads that the place has changed so many hands. I do believe so since the current reality does not reflects their past brilliance. Despite the Yelp review reporting that this place was good for kids, we found that to not really be the case. We got there about an hour prior to closing time and the staff made it clear that they were ready to go home. The food was so-so, it took quite a while to get it served, and by the time we were done (although there were other tables still dining) the restaurant had closed their doors and were turning away guests. When dining in Las Vegas, there are better choices. We won't be back. read more
