If there was a negative rating they'd have it. We have used Corrigan Moving from IL on many moves in IL and internationally. When we use them, they in turn may sub out actual delivery to another mover at the end destination. This is where Hilldrup comes in. Our furniture was stored in IL and then delivered to Arlington VA by Hilldrup. It arrived in Dec.. The movers cannot be professional movers. They didn't remove drawers from a credenza when moving it down stairs. The drawers dropped out everywhere damaging a wall and breaking a heating unit. The heirloom dining table was broken into pieces. The top separated from the pedestals and the under carriage wood rails broken. They were going to just drop it on the floor & go but we insisted that they put it on a pad on the floor. They said they had no idea how to put it together & to contact the insurance people. Right. We bought the insurance before the move but when the claim was submitted there was no response. Finally Corrigan got the insurance adjuster to come out. He came I took pictures. No card, no receipt no contact info. After a few weeks of complaining the insurance company said they attempted to come into the house but were refused entry. Completely false. Then they wanted to have a furniture repair person do a video estimate but that would have necessitated 2 people holding up the table while someone videoed the damage. This was after their agent saw the damage and had before & after pics sent to them with the claim form. Now Hilldrup says they have no one in northern VA on their list that does restoration. This is a part of the country that probably has more historical sites & antique dealers than anywhere in the US. Hilldrup does not return phone calls and does not respond to any written materials. This move cost thousands of dollars. We have contacted our insurance company to subrogate the claim and there will now be lawyers involved. There are three types of moves: local, long-distance, and storage. I have done all three types with this company, and overall they have been fairly good. Actually, I have to imagine they are the best around, but they are not without their faults too. My local move was by far the most challenging. I had a difficult immediate left turn to navigate once you entered my old front door, and I had a lot of valuable furniture that I was worried about making it through the door. For example, Haverty's refused to deliver my desk through said door on their first visit because they said it couldn't possibly fit. But on their second visit, they got it through without incident, but it did take some creativity to make the angles work. Given the effort to get my coveted desk into my place, I wasn't about to hand it over to just any movers and try my fate. I wanted experienced people who could do the job right. I definitely found that with Hilldrup. All of my good furniture arrived at my new house without any problems. However, I did have some other issues with a few smaller items having been lost, a chest from Pier One being damaged, and some scratches on my main dresser. I had a zero dollar deductible on my insurance for the move, so everything was taken care of immediately. Cost of the local move (where you pack your own boxes) was a flat rate of $1250 plus the cost of insurance which was, I think, about another $250. They offer their services by the hour, but that actually would have been more expensive in my case. The storage move was as easy as could be. I designated which boxes were going to storage, and which pieces of furniture would go as well. In less than 2 hours, they had everything on the truck and the paperwork was signed. I am still waiting on the final weighing to see what my actual costs will be. The long distance move was from VA to NYC. The cost was only a little bit more than the local move -- surprisingly. All told it was about $2200 with the zero dollar deductible. The move was somewhat complicated logistically, because in order to deliver to Manhattan, they had to use a smaller moving truck and not a tractor trailer. Also, I live in a 46-story building, so elevator time had to be reserved in advance, and even then moving could only occur between 9-5 on weekdays and a $500 deposit was required for the elevator. Amazingly, Hilldrup was able to deal with all of this, but there was definitely some miscommunication along the way. I was all set to move in on the first of the month, only to find out the day before that I would be moving in on the second, which contradicted what the driver just told me the day before. But that was all smoothed over, and I received everything promptly on the morning of the first. All the movers in each of the moves were great. They handled their jobs professionally, and I like their inventory system. I did have a couple of minor issues with my last move which were more stressful than serious. For example, on this move there were no wardrobe boxes provided for my clothes even though that was available to me on my local move -- definitely request these, if they don't mention them in the estimate. There was that panic that maybe everything but my clothes would arrive in New York. But they took my clothes, and just packed them at the warehouse for me. Also, I was warned that the glass in my buffet, coffee table, and lamps could break during transit. Wait, what? Doesn't a moving company deal with glass all the time? But it turns out the mover was just being overly cautious. Everything arrived just fine without incident. So if you have a complicated move, or have very valuable furniture and belongings that you are not willing to let just anyone handle, this is definitely the company for you. You will pay more for their services, but you will be very pleased with their work. After years of avoiding Yelp, I have made an account today just to review Hilldrup. This is the fifth time myself or anyone from my family has used Hilldrup to move (the second time I personally have used them). If we were to have rated them for the previous moves, I'm sure we would have given them 4 or 5 stars. However, this last move, a move of only TWO BLOCKS, has been a pain in the ass, to say the least. It is also the first time any furniture has been damaged in a move, and the first time anyone has tried to use their Hilldrup insurance. That little factor is the only difference between a five star experience with Hilldrup and a one star experience with Hilldrup. My antique Ethan Allen desk and dressers and an Aaron Brothers picture frame were all damaged durning the move. The movers did not pack nor care for my things the same way they would have for a longer move, and my belongings paid the price. I felt okay, though, knowing I purchased the best (read: most expensive) insurance policy possible from Hilldrup. It has now been over two months of these mother******s trying to nickel and dime me on the cost of repairs for the dressers. Today I called the second repair guy the sent for an estimate, and it turns out they were LYING about what they said he told them. They'd been saying he said the damage wasn't from moving, when if fact he said the damage WAS from moving. I wouldn't have ever known that if I hadn't called him myself, because I trusted Hilldrup. What the hell, Hilldrup? You've just wasted two months of my time, made my family and me insanely frustrated with you, and I'm now going to report you to the Attorney General and BBB. I used Hilldrup in late July to arrive early August 2014 for my move from Alexandria, VA to Littleton, CO. I was order 164 and claims ticket U164-3012-4. Please note I am only reviewing the container move. This was my first time using a moving company which was subcontracted under United Van Lines. Pros: + The packing crew in Alexandria, VA arrived on-time and brought the correct supplies to package my items. + Leslie Tanner was very helpful in answering all questions and ensuring I receive my damage claims refund in a timely fashion. Cons: - My TV was dropped in the hallway - My furniture was not dis-assembled (ex: my bookshelf has removable shelves but they were not removed) as a result my shelves were damaged during the move. - I had water damage to a few pieces of furniture due to the move. The 2 gentlemen, Bobby and D came to my place at 8:45am and started packing immediately. Both wore masks the entire time. Even the driver assisted. They labeled every box with my information and it's contents. They were very specific on what they were able to pack and what could not be packed. They moved boxes ON THEIR BACKS! We've moved across oceans and across the country, a total of seven times. We're not newbies to the business. I researched a lot of local companies to do our latest move, from Northern Virginia to Austin, TX, and got three quotes. I chose Hilldrup because of positive customer reviews and a competitive quote. What a disappointment. Now that the move is complete, we've got a whole stack of damaged furniture, more than we've ever had, combined, for any of our moves. I'm still waiting for one box to be delivered, which was left on the truck. No one contacted me to say that they had this leftover box in the truck and gee, am I missing anything? It was on me to track people down and keep on them to get it delivered. Here are my major problems with Hilldrup moving, starting from the beginning of the move. 1) Packers and loaders are two different teams. They sent two guys to pack and they were slow as molasses. Having two different teams on the loading end meant everyone could point fingers at someone else for the crappy packing job. 2) The truck was packed poorly, with some of our stuff packed behind other people's stuff and vice versa. The delivery team spent the day asking us, "Is this yours?" We were beyond annoyed and we knew that something was going to get left on that truck. Despite our best efforts (we scavanged our lawn mower off the truck at the last minute, and literally had to wave down the departing truck to take someone else's stuff they had left on our lawn) 3) The amount of damage--unacceptable. The boxes were poorly packed, many were crushed in on top upon delivery. We submitted claims for nine items, damage adding up to around $3,500. 4) They used 3rd party services to move our piano, and the "piano mover" they used on the Texas end knew NOTHING about pianos. He literally fooled around with the soundboard until he figured out how to unlock the keys, despite my protestations that if he doesn't know for sure how to do it he should leave it. 5) They tout their professionalism as a plus, but I tell you I've never felt more like a number. They were professional, but I felt like no one really gave a crap about our stuff or how the move went. They just wanted to get our move off the books. I definitely would not use Hilldrup movers again. Update: The missing box? Shipped by Hilldrup via UPS and all the stuff was smashed to smitherines. It was packed like crap with barely any paper in a huge box full of glass and breakables. The companies response? Contact UPS and make a claim on them. I have yet to receive an apology of any kind for their terrible performance. I'm downgrading their rating from two stars to one. I didn't use this particular location but it doesn't matter because their employees and policies are representations of the entire company. 1st The Sales Rep really wanted my business; she 'beat' the competitions price to store and transport the POD from Northern VA to Northern CA. Well it turns out this sly salesperson didn't add on the insurance in order to 'beat' the competitions complete (rate plus insurance) price. Then when I noticed after the 1st billing, I called to bring to her attention, giving her the benefit of the doubt that maybe it was just a processing oversight. Nope! The bastard lied and then told me it was company's policy not to add insurance coverage after the fact. I argued with her, telling her that is bad business not to honor our original agreement and then impose policy gibberish when it clearly doesn't fit my circumstance. Not happy because now I have to fly back out to VA move my things out of the POD into a moving truck and transport my things over 3k miles by myself! read more

A good mover is hard to find. When we first started searching for a respectable mover that won't run off with our stuff or break everything for our move from Maryland to Massachusetts, I thought it would be impossible. Reviews are impossible to find and there seems to be a zillion companies out there! I whole-heartedly recommend Hilldrup - they are super nice and reliable! They first sent a guy who inventoried our stuff and gave us a binding estimate. He seems to know his stuff and did everything quickly. The estimate was reasonable - a bit higher than the sketchy ones online where you just give them a list of things ($2500 for Hilldrup, 1500-2000 for sketchy online places for a one bedroom place) . The movers came, and were professional and friendly. They wrapped all of our furniture in pads and seemed careful with everything. They have a nice tagging system that makes sure you get all your stuff (nothing was lost!) The service was amazing! The coordinating person, Heather, was super nice and took care of everything, even my frantic last-minute call about parking permits (see below). Our driver/mover guy went ABOVE AND BEYOND his call of duty when our couch wouldn't fit into our stupid tiny service elevator. He and the other mover CARRIED the couch up TEN FLIGHTS OF STAIRS without us asking! Everything arrived in good shape minus this crappy desk that no one missed. Things to note - if you live or will move to a small street, talk to them about this! The van they had coming was GIGANTIC.. like 70ft long, and we had problems with this on our small street. Neighbors were upset. On the Massachusetts end, we were supposed to get permits taken care of for the van to park, which we didn't realize until it was too late, so the giant van just illegally parked there for 3 hours, which didn't end up being a problem. read more

Worst move ever. Do not use Hilldrup or United Van Lines. They are disorganized and do not communicate with each other. The "coordinator" and driver always had different stories about pick up time and what the instructions were. 3-4 hours late for furniture pick-up and box pick up - and I had to call them to let them know that no one showed up for the appt time! When they dropped my stuff off in Denver, they sideswiped a parked truck and, in a separate incident, the driver hit a big street lamp, pulling it out of the sidewalk! Crazy stressful and they did not care. This is my 4th professional move and awful, awful, awful. Would've been a better experience if I had paid some random college kid to move my stuff. Disappointing and awful experience with my move cross-country. At first, Hildrup seemed like it would be a great success. I had the nicest man come out to do an inspection of my belongings to estimate how many crates I would need to purchase. We went step by step in every detail of my house, and the process seemed promising and professional. We discussed how the movers would come in and take care of all of the packing since I was considered an international move, and he suggested I should be good with getting 2 lift vans. I trusted his estimate would be enough, as I knew I would even be getting rid of more stuff before the move. Once my papers were turned in, the company emailed me to verify if I wanted 2 or 3 crates. They did say in their communication that based on the papers turned in, 2 vans would be a tight fit and would be at full capacity, so if I don't get a third one, I should just be prepared for some overflow items that might not make it. Sounded reasonable, so I moved forward with the two... When the movers got there (after their scheduled time), they took one look around and within 5 minutes looked at me like I was crazy that all of my stuff would fit into two crates. Under the stress of moving, their reaction was upsetting... Like I was the one who would know that the estimate was way off! By the end, I certainly was not prepared for the absurd amount that didn't fit in the original estimate. After the movers left, I packed up and had to ship $2300 of my own belongings, and had to donate/throw away about $1500 worth of stuff. It was the biggest disaster of a day and the company was less than supportive. When my stuff finally arrived to my final destination, everything seemed fine except for some scratches I noticed on my TV in the upper corner. I reported the scratches before the movers left, and it wasn't until the cable company came to turn on the TV that they noticed the entire front of the screen was scratched and ruined. Of course, I took pictures and reported it up to the movers, but no surprise they have not been helpful. It's really too bad. I do know others who have had a better experience than me with Hilldrup. The estimator had me fooled - I thought this was the company that was going to provide the easiest, least stressful move to the West Coast. I arranged for a full-service move, including packing. On the day the packers were scheduled, no one showed up. It took hours for me to get someone to actually come out to my house and pack. When the movers arrived at the new place, they complained to me and the apartment management company several times about how they weren't allowed to use the entrance they wanted. As they unloaded things, it became apparent very quickly that several items had been damaged in the move. Additionally, there were three items that didn't arrive - the front wheel for my bike, a guitar and a piece for my keyboard stand. It took me WEEKS of complaining to finally get my bike wheel and guitar. Meanwhile, the move counselor and estimator stopped answering my messages. I received an invoice for an additional charge of $105 without any explanation. Since no one will answer my email and the United customer service said that the charge is coming from Hilldrup, I can't get any explanation. The invoice says that they'll be charging my credit card on 1/1/18. If they don't provide explanation by then, I'll be disputing the charge with my credit card company. The claims process for the damaged furniture is long and annoying. I was told that they needed to send out someone to do an inspection and could not repair anything until then. Fine. Only problem is that they can't seem to figure out scheduling. Every time I email to ask about scheduling, I get a response that they "need to look at the schedule." And then, nothing. I had initially recommended Hilldrup to a friend moving to Seattle and she was going to use them, but once the trouble started, I called her and told her to stay away. Their lack of service once I signed the paperwork agreeing to the move has resulted in a lost referral and my business for any future move. read more

From the initial survey to interactions with Maria to Kathy and team who loaded and moved our items- they were top notch. We had two moves. Hilldrup moved our items from our house to storage as we waited for the completion of a new home build. Once the home was complete, Hilldrup moved our items from storage to our new home. Our initial survey was great. It was virtual and the person (sorry, can't remember his name) who conducted the survey was professional and very thorough. Next was Maria- our coordinator. She is a rock star. She was very friendly and professional. She was always available and returned every call and email. I can't say enough about how good Maria is at what she does. The load and move team was outstanding. I really enjoyed working with Kathy and team. They worked on our first move and we liked them so much, we requested them for the second move. They were professional, fast, and fun. It felt like hanging out with family. Every one of the team members were great people. If you have a chance, request Kathy and team. Best of the best. The driver (Melvin) and packing and unpacking crew were absolutely lovely and professional, handled every one of our belongings with care, and worked tirelessly despite freezing rain and hail on our moving day. We had a horrible experience with this company. We've had several international moves before this, and we never had issues with other moving companies like we had with Hilldrup. They did a poor job packaging our belongings, and many things arrived broken or damaged. They refused our claim for reimbursement for the broken items. Like a previous review mentioned, their communication is awful, and for weeks when we were trying to figure out why there was such a long delay with them getting around to sending out shipment overseas, they wouldn't even reply to our emails requesting updates. It's been a year since our move so I've had time to reflect. Here's my overall assessment of our move from northern VA to AZ: Packing: Crew arrived on time. Since we had a three-level home, there seemed to be one guy per floor. That's where my reviews are mixed. The guy on the main floor -who seemed to be the crew chief -did an excellent job of packing. He had much of the. Readable things (kitchen, living room, etc.). The guy upstairs not so much. We found glass wall hangings thrown into a box with little to no packing material. No breakage, though some scratches. The packer in the basement was a mixed bag but I overall acceptable. The biggest problem with the packers is they were very haphazard about labeling and numbering the boxes. I'd estimate that some 25% of our boxes were not on the inventory list when we went to check in them off in our new home. Many things that didn't fit in a box were not included on the list at all. Loading: A nightmare but God bless the driver! He clearly knew what he was doing but seemed very rattled (and a little crabby) as his crew consisted of two kids, one of whom got hurt in the morning so sat on the front bench the rest of the day. The other kid worked very hard. All furniture was well wrapped and loaded but, in spite of clear instructions, they also loaded some items that were critical for us to take in the car. Hilldrup kindly reimbursed is for having to run out at the last minute to replace them. Unloading: The local crew in Arizona was fantastic. Worked non-stop and very helpful. The VA-based driver not so much. He implied that we didn't need to check off our boxes but I insisted. That's when we discovered many many boxes that weren't numbered or on the inventory. He blew that off, including boxes on the inventory list that didn't seem to come off the truck. Overall: In the end we haven't noted anything missing in the year that we've been here. Breakage/scratches were minimal. We did have a TV that was broken but, unfortunately, i didn't know it until after the claim period was expired because it had been in storage so I couldn't file a claim. Overall -other than the normal chaos of a cross-county move -I guess this move went OK. I'd put Hilldrup above another large moving company we used, mostly because the office staff in Virginia was very helpful and nice to deal with. Also, the other moving company showed up 8 hours late on moving day and Hilldrup was (mostly) on time. The United driver was very knowledgeable though not pleasant to deal with although in all fairness he had a skeleton of a (very young) crew in Virginia. In Arizona he seemed to be in a big hurry. The Arizona crew was excellent - worked nonstop and remained pleasant to deal with. Hopefully the skeleton crew in VA was an anomaly as if not for that I'm sure I'd be giving at least one more star. read more

I chose Hilldrup based on the quote estimate they gave in person for my apartment. The estimator sold me on the containers, telling me it would be cheaper, so I selected that option. It ended up costing $1000 more than the quote I was given, plus: - movers dragged rust all across my apartment carpet from my outside furniture - movers declined to move my outside furniture anyways after that, requiring me to toss it - movers left some of my things in the elevator when they drove away, meaning I had to take the things they forgot in the elevator with myself across the country - Hilldrup didn't even start moving my things from storage across the country for well more than a week after I gave them the final address - Hilldrup claimed they could only move my things into my apartment during regular business hours, requiring me to take a day off from my new job on my second week - Hilldrup broke 2 legs on my dresser while moving me in, and got a big black stain on my carpet - Hilldrup's customer service was unhelpful in addressing the broken dresser, and it's still sitting broken in my bedroom one week later. Not only that, but multiple Hilldrup agents called me asking the same questions, at the same time. The customer service team didn't seem to coordinate well with each other or communicate together well. This wasn't the cheapest quote I received, and I thought I was avoiding quality issues by choosing a mid-range estimate. I would say, choose Hilldrup if you're OK with broken furniture, long times waiting for Hilldrup to do what they're supposed to do, paying more than you anticipated, and not getting all your furniture moved. read more

Wow. Moving is stressful enough but when the mover shows up with only a portion of your possessions, disorganized and with numerous damaged boxes the stress level hits a new level. Hilldrup/United are amazing on the intake. They gave us total confidence. But the reality was so much worse. I would never use Hilldrup again. They came recommended to us by family (who have also since had a negative experience). Issues started from the beginning when they did not send enough packers to complete our pre-move packing. The individual was nice but there was too much work for her to complete in the allotted time. We were unable to get ahold of our move coordinator to resolve that day, and had to call the central dispatch line. The move out process was the best of the components, folks were nice, prompt and courteous. All of this pales in comparison to our move in. Our movers were late, rude and careless with our items. They claimed to not be able to fit the truck down the street, blamed our move coordinator who in turned blamed them. A 2hr move process that was supposed to start at 12pm took until 11:30pm at night and was meet with bribery, refusal to complete the job and utter rudeness. Protective materials were not used and many items ended up being damaged. The claims process was equally as horrible with the company covering a fraction of what the true costs of things were. To add insult to injury, several months later we received an additional invoice on top of the $7k+ we had already given them with no context, invoice or rationale. Several months later (now) in an effort to rid myself of this horrible company we have paid the invoice. I could go into far more details about all of the mishaps that occurred with this move, but I wont. Just know it was horrible. Moving is already stressful and this company made it significantly worse. I would never use Hilldrup again, and will urge anyone and everyone I know to stay away. read more

I do not recommend this moving company. The communication was poor from the beginning to the end. Initially, we waited two weeks from our initial contact to obtain confirmation of a move date, which made it difficult to coordinate and plan, moving halfway across the country. From there, they had limited dates and flexibility to choose from. The delivery window they provide was over 7 days and the delivery driver ended up late on the 7th day. We were not provided any updates during this period of time, and the delivery driver was unreachable. We just sat in our empty house waiting for our belongings. There were a few items of damage, nothing major that we noticed, however, the movers did spill a rust looking liquid all over our driveway and left it. They also left a furniture piece from the bathroom behind. When we called them about five minutes after they left to address these issues, they did not answer and never returned our call. The main issue here being a total lack of communication, making the relocation and move difficult and stressful. read more

AWFUL! I have moved several times over the past few years and Hilldrup, although previously used and I was satisfied, was UNSATISFACTORY. The movers did an adequate job, but were definitely in a hurry to go home. So, at the end of the day you sign off the report that the boxes were delivered. The boxes were not unpacked, and if any boxes were missing, how would you know when there is an entire house full of them? So, I was missing an important item and other smaller items that were listed in boxes called 'misc. garage'. I advised Hilldrup THE NEXT DAY the most expensive item was missing and I was sent a claim form. After filing a claim with Hilldrup ALL claims were denied; the big missing item and the ones they put in boxes they called misc. They stated "nothing was noted as missing" on the final form, so too bad, so sad. OK, so I got the bums rush and I fell for it. I will NEVER, EVER, EVER use Hilldrup again. If you wish to, feel free, the movers themselves are fine, but corporately, outright denying claims of completely missing items is unacceptable. read more

***Updated review So this story started out lovely. Pete came out to give me a quote and he was awesome. Julie picked it up from there and she kept in constant communication scheduling a day for our move from Virginia to California. The movers were suppose to arrive between 11-1, but they didn't get there until 5:00. Julie kept in great communication throughout the day. The packers and movers had a fabulous attitude and worked until 10:30 that night to load the truck. But be forewarned!!! Just because they pick up your stuff, it does not mean it will leave for your destination that day. My truck was still sitting in Virginia one week later! I called yesterday and sent an email and was told that my truck is still in virginia and julie was sorry for not communicating with me because she was on vacation. I was just told this morning that I should receive my shipment by August 8/9, it was picked up on July 21st! This is a huge issue for me because I have MY planned vacation with my kids to Canada scheduled for August 9th! The story continues. I will update you on how this story turns out. ***So the update is that they could deliver it on the 10th missing their contract day of August 6th by four days. Of course I am out of the country now as of course I was expecting to have it by August 6th. I was contacted by a manager named Mary who asked how she could make this better for me, which I thought was awesome. I told her I wanted to be compensated their delay rate for every day it was late as I have four children and had to make accommodations for them. When I called today she said they couldn't do that, and that they would be able to offer half the amount. This is of course AFTER I pay the amount in full and THEN I will be compensated. This does not feel good to me. Nor did it feel good when Mary repeatedly kept asking the same questions over and over about what I purchased to create a make shift home for my family. Insinuating that I would have purchased these items anyway. I even bought another pair of scissors because when I chose not to and instead used a knife to cut the packaging off of an additional broom I had to buy, I cut my finger resulting in five stitches. Had my stuff been there, I would have had a broom, and many pairs of scissors. I asked for an email confirming that they would pay this compensation, otherwise I have nothing in writing. I also said that I will not make payment until the truck arrives at the door. They will try to get you to pay up front. DO NOT do this. Once they have your money, they have zero incentive to deliver. They have your stuff and your money. Clearly, I would not use Hildrup or United again. Not sure that any movers would be any better? The main thing about using ANY mover, is do not trust them. Protect yourself by not paying up front, keep emailing/calling so they don't forget about you and be prepared to not see your belongings for a month. My husband and I just moved with Hilldrup United from Alexandria, VA to Charleston, SC. We chose United Hilldrup from the four companies we interviewed because they promised that they would be coordinating with us every step of the way to help us prepare for the move. This turned out not to be true as their "coordination" turns out to be mass emails that went into our spam folder. There was no follow up with their coordination department to make sure that we had received the emails so that we could better prepare for the move. For instance, had I been better informed, I would have made sure that things I did not want packed were locked up safely so that the packers would not have access to these things. As it turned out, when the packers arrived and we did a walk through of our home, I pointed out one cabinet, I did not want them to touch. Little did I know I should have locked it up with a skull and cross bones on the outside. By the time the packers got to this cabinet, they had forgotten what I had said and everything was packed inside including garage door openers that our tenants needed who were moving into our house, dog collars for the electric fence, and a manual for operating all the appliances in the house. We had to order new garage door openers and we have yet to find the dog collars to send back to our tenants. The next day when our household goods were to be picked up and loaded on the moving van, the crew and truck arrived four hours late because of a mechanical malfunction of the truck. Once it did arrive, the driver assessed that a second truck was needed because of the amount of our household effects. Because of the truck's late arrival and the need to stay on schedule with loading everything that day as I had painters coming the next day, followed by carpet repair and cleaning the following day and then an entire house cleaning the third day, I became very upset with the coordination office and finally, I started receiving the "outstanding" service that we were promised and that one hears on their automated message ad nauseum when trying to reach someone at Hilldrup United. The parting shot of the loading van was that part of our stone retaining wall in our driveway was knocked down by the truck which I did not discover until the next day. I had to have that repaired so that the driveway could be usable again. Delivery in Charleston went off without a hitch until it was discovered that a crucial piece of hardware needed to set up our king size bed was missing. Hilldrup had contracted with a third party to disassemble the bed in Alexandria, VA and reassemble it in Charleston, SC as it was a Sleep Number Bed and apparently they don't have the expertise to do that. Unfortunately, when this third part disassembled the bed in Alexandria, they left all the hardware attached to the frame of the bed and one of the crucial pieces became loose and was subsequently lost. As this was covered under the contract, Hilldrup United wasted a day trying to locate the part and finally the next day, they contacted a local furniture repair company to come and repair the bed. When the technician, who was also the owner of this company came, to the house, he stated that the missing piece could have been purchased at Home Depot. He did repair the bed frame and set up our bed. In summary, this was a less than stellar move and we feel like we were promised service that was not delivered. Recently had the pleasure of using this company to move us. Although it was a short move, there were enough belongings that I needed professional assistance. I had read reviews for many companies and heard great impressions and nightmares. Thankfully we chose this company. From the first in home consult, to the coordinator and to the entire team who showed up to move us. Each person was extremely helpful and professional. On yet day of the move, they showed up exactly when they said and they went to work! The staff treated the entire household and goods with care. When it came time to unload, they did the same for our new house and all our belongings . What ever this company does to retain employees like this , they should continue to do so!! This was our second move with Hilldrup in about two months. We moved from Northern VA to LA in December and I wrote a previous review about that, a couple of weeks ago we completed a move with the rest of our stuff from Northern VA to New York. Once again, Hilldrup was outstanding. I was much more relaxed having had such a positive experience with them moving to LA and I knew I was in good hands. The move coordinator, Maria, was again wonderful, keeping us up to date with everything, checking in before during and after the move and answering all questions, no matter how dumb they might be. The movers themselves were very professional, they were hard-working, quick, polite, and couldn't have been better. We had some difficulties around our dates and Hilldrup let us arrange the dates the way we wanted which I'm sure was difficult for them- we needed them to delay delivering our stuff after picking it up, and they figured out a way to make it happen! There was one minor issue but even that has been taken care of with professionalism. There was a scratch on our new floor in our condo in NY. I sent them pics, they told me to get a quote to get it fixed, I forwarded them the quote, and they're sending me a check for that amount! From the first time we made the decision to finishing up, Hilldrup was outstanding. I'd recommend them to anyone! And a special shout out to Maria who coordinated everything and Carmen who resolved the issue with our floor quickly and without any issues at all. read more

I found Hilldrup thanks to Angie's list and am so so very glad we did! We called for a quote and the appraiser came out as scheduled a day or two later. We had short notice that we were moving so needed to find a reliable company that could move us with only two weeks notice. We paid about $8000 to move from Fredericksburg VA to Seattle WA in the middle of winter. She walked through the house detailing what was moving what wasn't and answered our questions anout process and timing. About a day or two later we received a quote. One of the best things about Hilldrup is that their quotes are locked in as the maximum amount - it might be less but won't be more which helped us for budgeting. It likely wasn't the cheapest quote we could have gotten but we were impressed by their service and reviews on Angie's List -- and they could accommodate our schedule. I liked that we didn't have to worry about hours worked, number of crew, etc thay took care of all that within the quote given. On packing day two professionals, who at first we thought were supervisors, showed up on time and finished all the packing on time. (I will note here that my husband is a retired Marine with lots of cross-country moving experience so we had done a lot to pre-organize what moved from what did not --which helped.) I am an artist and part of what they were packing was my studio and a lifetime of work! The moving truck showed up early the next day and the the local Hilldrup team showed up on time. Hilldrup is part of United Van Lines, so our driver and his truck were from Montana -- same great service. They loaded up and off it went! The truck arrived as scheduled two weeks later. We got a call A day or two ahead of time letting us know our truck was coming. The unloading was complex as we are on a tiny street and the truck was huge. Nonetheless, our Montana driver and the local Seattle United Van Lines team worked it out and had us moved in on time by parking the truck a couple of blocks away and getting a smaller truck to haul up to our apt building. We paid by cashier check for the agreed upon amount - there was no extra charge for the extra truck! These guys worked hard and got us set up and settled in our new home. Everything arrived in great condition, with only one minor injury to a lamp. Given the obstacles, it's rather extraordinary. The hilldrup packers put such care into their work and were so methodical - all of our china and glasses, the art work, all arrived safe and sound. It was labeled clearly which expedited our unpacking. My only wish is that there were a rating higher than a 5 stars that I could give to Hilldrup. read more

Worst moving company award goes to Hilldrup. They sent a truck and crew to pick up my belongings. I watched them make sure everything was securely packed and labelled and loaded onto their truck. Shocked to see a Mayflower truck (not the same Hilldrup truck I saw my things being loaded onto) pulled up at my new residence and began unloading. Things had been repacked and were no longer in the containers they had been in when they left my house in Virginia. Labels missing, cardboard packing boxes slashed (intentionally?) food items put in with childrens stuffed animals (glass jar of molasses with teddy bears - intentional?) dirty garage broom placed into hinged chest with casio keyboard. Anything that could be broken they succeeded in breaking, and even things that had survived many past moves for me were destroyed: Antique Juke Box, Portable hot tub, 5 piece stereo system, desktop computer and monitor (had been carefully packed in separate boxes), foam mattress topper slashed, mirrors and pictures in glass frames shattered, arms broken off of recliners, all tables scratched and stone inserts split into pieces, computer work station left my Virginia home in one piece but had been disassembled and broken (they didn't even attempt to try to put it together). When Mayflower truck showed up there was driver and 2 crew workers but driver and 1 crew member remained on truck leaving only 1 guy to bring items to my garage and hand it to my elderly friend who had come to watch but ended up doing much more that I expected movers to do. The loading from my split level home (two stair cases) and more down sloping terrain and 35 more feet to truck in driveway took only 2 hours. Why did it take 7 hours to unload from truck to garage (distance of 10 feet) single level with no steps? Maybe worst of all is that driver left me no paperwork. My move took place in late March which was 3 months ago but I've heard nothing regarding claim I filed. read more

I can't speak to the storage or to long-distance moves, but, for a local move, I can't recommend Hilldrup enough. The movers I originally hired fell through at the last minute, so I only had three days to find and hire a new company to move me fifty-some miles from Baltimore to Northern Virginia. I contacted Hilldrup Wednesday morning and was all set up in my new condo the Friday after--no problems whatsoever. My contact at Hilldrup--Sandy--was courteous and professional. She took my last-minute request in stride, reassured me that my plight was not exactly uncommon, and set all the wheels in motion. She scheduled a surveyor to come to my house early Thursday evening and the packers and movers came--on time!--Friday morning, all the way from Stafford, VA. I had already done most of the packing on my own, so the packers checked a few boxes to make sure nothing would break, wrapped and packed my television, and took a quick look around my very narrow street to figure out where the moving truck could park when it arrived. They stayed until the truck arrived. Dwight (the mover) and his associate (whose name I never learned) were polite and efficient. There was nowhere to park the truck out of the flow of traffic, so I watched for cars out the front window and, whenever one pulled up, one of the movers would run out, move the truck, and move it back. This happened three or four times over the course of two hours, but neither one complained. They also navigated my steep staircase with no problems and did absolutely no damage to any of my belongings (or to the house). Once the house in Baltimore was packed up, Dwight made sure I knew they would have to stop at a weigh station along the way and thus would be a little bit behind me. They weren't too far behind--they pulled up at the condo in VA perhaps only fifteen or twenty minutes after me and got to work! Again, they were very careful with my things and took care with the walls, floor, and door so nothing was scratched or left a mark. They even took a look at a dresser drawer I'd complained didn't open and shut with ease (a preexisting problem) and figured out how to fix it! The entire moving process (from when the packers arrived to when the moving truck left, but excluding the drive from MD to VA) took about four hours. A few hours after that, Sandy (my original POC) called me to make sure it had all run smoothly and according to plan. I had no complaints, and 10 days later am still very happy with the work they did. Hilldrup will definitely be the very first place I call the next time I plan to move! read more

Do not use these people for your move! They broke much of our furniture, belongings & wrecked the walls/bannisters in our new home. They didn't pack properly and needed more the one old man with two young boys to do our move. One of the crew even clogged our toilet then said nothing leaving a nasty mess for me to clean up. When I called to complain the managers said "...too bad... goodbye...". PLEASE STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! We incurred thousands in $$$ to repair/replace our items & new home. read more

International US to Europe move - packers in the US lost our house keys ; we had to rekey every lock in the house - the company obviously underestimated the amount of work (they were still loading at midnight) - they did not keep screws and parts together with furniture they disassembled ; we are still unable to put some of our furniture back together because we don't know in which box the screws are. - our clothes were randomly jumbled together in regular boxes, instead of being hung in wardrobe boxes ; now we have to take half our wardrobe to the cleaner. - the reception and customs clearance process in Germany was poorly managed, or at least poorly communicated. The local agent did not seem to know exactly what forms and paperwork was required and did not communicate the status proactively with us, which resulted in delays and extra costs when we had to rent another temporary accommodation at the last minute. read more

The packers Kathy Jackson (and I forget the other ladies name) arrived about 8 am and worked continuously until 6PM. They wrapped everything better than best! Things have been really organized for the unpacking part. Boxes are labeled very well! They were both very polite and very professional. I asked them if they needed water or anything and they said "no". I did not realize until my husband told me that night that I should have bought lunch for them. I am sorry ladies that I did not know that. I am sure you were starving by the time you finished :( The next day at 8am Tony Ford, Walt, Jeff and Dre arrived and started packing and never slowed down! It took them maybe 4 hours to get all of our stuff in the truck. And they were such a funny bunch. I was cracking up all day! Since I knew about the "lunch" thing by now I stopped and got them lunch and they were very happy about that :) Kathy even came by at the unpack and helped. They put everything where I asked them too! This is our 3rd time using Hilldrup and we will always use them (hope to never move again) & recommend them to anyone who has a move to make! Had 2 wonderful moves with Hilldrup United followed by the move from Hell. It's been an ongoing problem for 15 months and one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever encountered. I don't think one item on their "Customer Bill of Rights" happened this time. The estimator said all the right things and answered all our questions, but unfortunately never wrote it down or told anyone else in the company about his assurances. Day 1 of packing day starts and things start to go down hill. An item was broken and discarded (not completely as remnants were found) and the packers never informed us. Several other items broken by packers that were also never noted. They tried to tape things back together. Mattress boxes delivered in a storm and left out in the rain; no new ones to be found; mattresses partially wrapped and thrown in trucks. No one (packers, loaders, delivery) arrived during the time window. The completion time on the load finished 6 hours past the time promised causing great distress for my teenage drivers starting an 8 hour drive to a hotel causing them to not arrive until 3:30am. Items estimator promised would be packed could not be packed, causing us to have to discard them, and since we were not informed until the 11th hour, could not make alternate arrangements. Driver/loader refused to communicate issues directly with us but would instead call the moving coordinator to impart updates. When I was standing 3 feet away from him! Overflow truck at load insufficient so much time wasted waiting for another. Then was delivered days past promised time. Items marked for overflow truck were instead placed on 1st truck and then items needed and marked for 1st truck were on overflow. The claims process has been horrible and unfortunately it's not over yet. Based on our first 2 moves, we always recommended Hilldrup United. Unfortunately after this one, I can no longer do that. If it had been one small glitch that United apologized for and positively worked to correct - maybe. Sadly, start to finish no one seems to care. read more

I opted to pack myself as I have moved 10 times with the military. All the materials were provided for me which made it very easy. I received a compliment on my packing from the crew! There were supposed to be 3 crew along with the driver but only 2 showed up. They did work hard but it took longer than expected to load the truck. Everything that could be taken apart, was taken apart. My floors were not the cleanest when they were done as it was raining. This was a door to door move. The crew on the receiving end also worked hard. My floors were well protected. My only complaint was that there were a lot of "left over" screws so who knows if something is going to fall apart. read more
