'Tis the season to enjoy Maddax Woods Park…read more Like many parks in West Linn, a group of volunteers aid the city with seasonal displays and activities to make each public park a little unique. At Maddox Woods that means this is the 10th year of the Lighting of Maddax Woods, a seasonal light display and a wildlife scavenger hunt for the kids. There are 36 animals (woodcuts) throughout this 7 acre park along the Willamette River to try to find during your visit. This is a natural park and nature trail that is part of the Willamette Greenway Trail and when you head up the hill and cross the bridge that trail connects you to Burnside Park. Thanks to land donations to the city by early West Linn families there is a lot of open space along the river to enjoy with your human and canine companions. This location is also a prime spot for birders to view one of the largest heron rookeries in our area, that is across the river on Goat Island. This park is pretty hidden and I only discovered it a couple of years ago when you head downhill from the West Linn Public Library. It is more of a nature preserve and walking park without a playground or other amenities. There is a handicapped accessible porta-potty near the entrance. The volunteers sell Christmas trees for $20 to help fund their activities throughout the year. They also have a monthly work party to help maintain the space. I take suggestions from my dog park friends and got tables put in and a mud puddle that needed taken care of and got that taken care of and grass on tube and new sign and water and pools in summer. So I advocate for the dog park to make it a great place for dogs, and people been going to Hazelia dog park for a long time. My dog Lola has a great time playing fetch with her ball. I've picked up poo bags people left threw them away and pick up all the balls and put them back in bucket and fill water bowls for the dogs. Winter now I bring a pool for my dog Lola because she runs and gets hot with all her hair but I rinse out pool and take pool home with me everytime I leave the park since I purchased the pools from ace hardware. The only things that bug me about this park are the H.S students parking in round about by small dog park and they are fully capable able bodied students to walk to other parking lot but I have walking challenges yes there's handi cap but its a distance to walk. Why have a high school where students can't park there. The balls end up in pine tree and I have to fight with tree. I lost one of my balls in the pine tree it eats balls. Plus when the balls go over fence and then can't get them I physically cannot get over fence. People leaving poo bags on ground or on fence or on the trash can instead of throwing them away.

The dog park is not as clean as others, it's pretty disappointing to see how much mess is in there so definitely scope out the area and watch your step. The kids playground is so cute, I love the wood structure and it totally reminds me of my childhood. The large play stones are a fun touch. There is a walking trail next to the small parking lot there are homes along the walking trail side and if you keep your eye out, they have a gorgeous mule and two chunky long-haired piggies that I love to say hello to. There is a covered area with multiple electrical outlets and three of the six picnic tables are covered. It's a very nice park to bring a small grill to or just come to picnic on a blanket. There is no water feature here for kids/summer, no skating area, which all ensure it's a more quiet experience. I would like to see them add more garbage cans onsite. There are multiple cameras on site which I think it's a wonderful idea, children need to be safe, parks need to be respected, troublemakers should be supervised at all times and held accountable. I love to see the city being active and protecting these community resources.

There's also a small playground next to the parking lot. I saw one or two picnic tables and some benches as well. Dogs & other pets are NOT allowed to protect & preserve the wetland animals in the area. We saw several kinds of birds & ducks, frogs, and a couple small mammals which I believe were perhaps nutria (similar to a muskrat). There aren't any restroom facilities here, so keep that in mind. The park is located next to a business area & road, so you may hear cars & traffic, depending on when you visit.
