Great service. Food was delicious! I would go here again. Catfish was seasoned to taste.

I first started going to Hillary's when I lived in North Chicago, 1970! Hillary's was also the choice of many of the Abbott Labs employees. If someone knew you were going out to Hillary's there were multiple orders to pick-up. When I moved to Kenosha, we would ride down to Waukegan and pickup orders. The service was not the same, but the food was on point. I have had ribs, rib-tips and catfish. When Hillary's opened in Kenosha, I was really glad because I wouldn't have to go to Illinois. The food now was just "okay", nothing to brag about, so I would occasionally go back to Waukegan and Zion. For the past few 5 years or more, I eat sporadically from Hillary's, but am always on the lookout for some "delicious" ribs. The quality of the ribs has sunk so low, that the only good part is the sauce. Ever so often I would get a decent meal, but it so seldom, that I have chosen not to go, if there is anywhere else I can go to. Finally, my husband and I ordered a small rib tips order; one with hot sauce and the other, with mild sauce. We didn't expect much, and we were not dissapointed. The very first piece was amazingly chewy. And each piece afterwards was worse. I thought if I let it sit in the sauce for awhile, the pieces would soften up. That did not happen. My husband eventually tossed his order. I tried to eat mine, but it was like chewing on leather, merely an exercise for your jaws. I am done! And this saddens me because I was there when Hillary first started selling barbecue out of his garage. He's no longer with us, and the business bearing his name is a disgrace. read more

I've been ordering from this location for twenty years. Now they no longer pick up the phone for a phone order. It would be one thing if you ordered at the counter and waited the customary 10 minutes like all the other Hillary locations I've eaten at. The first one was North Chicago IL, then Waukegan IL, then also Zion which has tried twice to stay open. You order and within ten minutes you can leave with your meal Not Kenosha where I've waited up to an hour! How do you expect me to only order at the counter then wait that amount of time Poor business model and bad customer service. I don't care how much I like the food you have made it impossible for me to enjoy it. read more

When the wind is just right, you can smell the BBQ for miles. MMMMMMMMM. Lot of combos available and portions are good. I had the ribs...tender and delicious! Great sauces for the ribs. Prices are a little steep, but that's our economy! Plenty of seating and parking. read more

I ordered catfish and called to let them know that they gave me SWAI FISH, & she hung up on me & I ordered a small rib tip in which the ribs were so greasy!! Well... sad but true, Hillary's isn't what they used to be . I grew up in Lake County Illinois, i grew up eating at Hillary's there in North Chicago. I've been living in the south since 2004. When I came up here to visit I was soooo happy to see there was a Hillary's here in Kenosha. I am so sorry to say that they aren't the quality that they used to be, maybe new owners ? I placed a pretty big order for our family including a slab of ribs and the small combo pack. The fish was catfish not the perch that I ordered, it was so terribly overcooked it didn't really even look like fish inside the breading, and the smell ! It was really fishy smelling. Inedible. Our Oder was supposed to have a slab of ribs, nope, it wasn't there, there was an extra order of rib tips tho. Maybe that was supposed to be a replacement ? That was okay, but it would have been nice to have been asked if I wanted the substitution. And the sauces...... for 6 pieces of fish there 3 tiny squeeze packs of tartar sauce..... The rib tips were decent, we liked those and the chicken was good. But I will not be ordering from them again. read more

The food was absolutely HORRIBLE!!! The catfish was cut so thin..... Then they gave me a super thin and small fillet and a super thin catfish steak.... The rib tips were hard and chewy!!! The outside of the tips were hard as a brick!! This is the last time I will ever go there for anything!!! The best part of the the food was the white bread which is utterly sad!!! As soon as the unpleasant lady behind the counter saw my husband was not wearing a mask he was asked to leave.If we had a mask (which we did not) we would have put one on. She can ask her customers to wear a mask but she could do it with some customer service skills. She obviously does not need the business. Will not return. read more

Nothing is what it used to be. For anyone looking to return from years past, please don't. I tried walking in and got an attitude as soon as I did. I did not have a mask, so I tried ordering online. I asked what the most recommended options were and the woman laughed at me and made me feel stupid for not knowing. I proceeded to tell her what I wanted but got paused 4 times while on the phone and still received attitude each time. "do you know what you want now, or not? " I payed over 40 dollars for 2, 3 meat combo plates and they were so bad. Meat was not tender and they gave no other sauces. I've been going to Hillary's since I was in high school. Over 20 years!! I started going to their North Chicago location and once I moved to Kenosha I still went down to Illinois to get the rib tips. I was so happy they opened the location in Kenosha. Here's the best part of this review. I recently went to Heavenly Plate in Milwaukee with my boyfriend. We ordered rib tips from there & I was pissed. Dry, no sauce, no love. I went to Hillary's last night and almost cried when I picked up my order. Once I arrived at my boyfriend's house you could totally smell the goodness. I've converted him! He loves the tips. You want good BBQ? Don't waste time going anywhere else. I'm giving this place a 4 only because the service can be iffy at times. Now, the BBQ is delicious if you like a more vinegar based sauce. The rib tips are swoon like deliciousness but make sure to call ahead of time to see if they have them and reserve your order. I loved the fried mushrooms and the pulled pork! read more

We have been going to the original Hillery's for decades and love it. But they are closed for construction so we decided to head to the one in Kenosha. What a mistake! It's February of 2023, and they are still requiring masks. Since we no longer keep masks with us because NOBODY requires them anymore, we didn't have masks. They refused to serve us, and were extremely nasty about it, too! Didn't even offer any solutions such as calling in an order and doing curbside, nothing. Just an angry, nasty woman behind the counter demanding we leave. After reading many other reviews of this particular Hillery's, it seems this was a blessing to us. There are so many negative reviews out there about how bad the food and service have become at the Kenosha restaurant, that I am glad we didn't spend a dime there. We'll never be back. Can't get past the rude people on the phone. Why? I called at 1230 in the afternoon and this girl barely let me put in my order and then hung up on me after telling me it would be ready at 0145. Of the three locations (North Chicago, Waukegan, and Kenosha) this is the most consistently good. I like the brisket or the tips with some hush-puppies. But the sauce is the thing. None finer from Hecky's in Evanston to Milwaukee and that includes Carson's, Ravinia BBQ and Nite-n-gale. In the same parking lot there is a used paperback bookstore, some pretty good burgers and fries, and a huge electronics store with new, used, and surplus stuff (imagine radio shack meets american scientific). read more

We would go to the North Chicago location on the weekends and about 8 years ago I stopped by there on a visit home and lost my mind when they made changes to their sauce and menu. I do not really care for the Waukegan location so when I heard the Kenosha restaurant had ribs like North Chicago use to I drove all the way up there for the Tips a month ago and they were so good! They did not wear gloves when handling my food. The food is never ready when you get there. Told me to pick my food in an hour. Was not ready in that hour. Most of the French fries are stubs. They put the chicken and fish on top of bread. So, the bread is greasy. read more

For more than 35 years I have been going to Hillery's Bar-bq. The food at the Kenosha location is as good as the 14th Street location that was in North Chicago. The "really bad" thing is the service. They are rude and degrading. Why do they have a phone number if they don't answer it. Lost sales, must not need the business. They need to change if they intend on staying around. I know it has been hard to get help the past few months but try being nicer to people and that could change. Nobody like to work with and for people that are jerks. This is one of those "finger lickin" good places that's worth the drive to eat at. When I grew up in northern Ill, we use to eat at Hillery's from time-to-time. I don't recall a bad experience here. The Beef BBQ ribs are the standard!! If you're not careful, you'll wind up eating the sauce-covered tin foil as well!! :) It's hard to find good BBQ beef ribs, and this place does it right. The sides compliment the main curses perfectly. One of my fave stops in Kenosha. read more

Worst Customer Service I have experienced in the Kenosha area! It all started with a call....I wasn't sure of their hours so I called before heading here because it was a pretty far distance from where we were at. I told the man on the phone that I was just checking to make sure they were open. He told me they were open the next day Labor Day from 11-4pm. I stated Oh, so you are closed now?, his reply was an exasperated "Noooooo, I'm just telling you we are open tomorrow from 11-4pm!" Ooookkkkk, not sure why that was pertinent to tell me since I didn't ask about the next day's hours, I asked about that same day. I should have picked a different place immediately but was in the mood for ribs and Bad 2 Da Bone was closed. We arrived around 4 pm (10 mins after we called) to be told they had NO ribs and there was a 45 min wait on rib tips....Ok, the sign does say Bar-Bq restaurant right? The same surly man was there, older African American man with curly salt and pepper hair. He was just as rude in person as he was over the phone. He basically told us it is what it is, do you want to order or not. He said people had been coming in and getting ribs all day, which I get with it being the day before a holiday but isn't it the restaurant's job to anticipate that? No one in management could have thought, hmmm maybe we should really amp up our supply because hey people just might want BBQ on a traditional BBQ weekend??!! When I ordered a 1/2 dark meal for my husband, he acted like he didn't know what meat I meant....I looked at the sign and looked at him and repeated a 1/2 dark meal chicken, then he was like oh ok...what else could I have been talking about besides chicken? Do people order 1/2 dark fish? 1/2 dark ribs? He was again just being a jerk. Again, I should have left but against better judgement we ordered anyway and went down the street to Culver's to wait it out. We arrived back at 5pm to pick up our order of 3-XL rib tip dinners and a 1/2 dark meal. The man fortunately did not help us this time, it was a woman. She was much friendlier but still not the picture of good customer service either, she seemed annoyed when she had to wait 1-2 mins for my friend to find another card when she realized they didn't take American Express. We took our bounty home to eat it and it was still hot when we arrived. Sadly, it smelled great but was largely disappointing. 2 of the rib tip dinners were pretty tender but the 3rd was tough and nearly inedible. Their sauce is in a word WEAK! It is not sweet enough and too vinegary, almost to the point of being sour. The chicken was very good according to my husband. Overall, the food was ok nothing to write home about but passable. However, their HORRIBLE customer service will have us looking for a new BBQ place! I don't need to pay someone to be rude to me, I can get that for free riding the CTA! read more

I'm from Waukegan and was so excited when I moved to Kenosha and saw this Hilary's so close to my house! I called once to make an order and the guy was so rude I ended up just hanging up. Some time later I decided to give it another try thinking everyone has bad days. So instead I tried going instead. I've driven here THREE times and each time this place has been closed despite me going during their posted business hours. I will drive to Waukegan when I want my Hilary's from now on. read more

Anyplace that has a pressure cooker big enough that I could climb into it has a place near my heart (though my cardiologist probably doesn't want to hear that). This place serves some really good ribs, tibs, brisket, etc. I have also enjoyed the fish. read more
