We were greeted by every single one with a smile and happy energy, despite how busy the place was. There are so many times when you sit at a bar unnoticed and patiently wait for someone to look your way, but this was the opposite of that. Our drinks were ice cold and served super fast. We didn't try any food, but they do have a small menu of bar bites that sounded really good. My cider was crisp, and not too sweet. It seemed to be "the spot", because there were lots of people but we didn't have any trouble finding seating. Lots of people had their dogs with them, which is always a plus!! The food and service are very good. There is an excellent selection of beers on tap that are brewed on the premises. It is very enjoyable to sit on the covered deck and enjoy the small stream that runs along the side of the brewery. There is parking across the street and in the field across the stream. There is some street upgrades in progress in front of the entrance that may limit access to the parking lot across the stream. These improvements should be completed soon. After a long hike at Catawba Falls, we stopped in for a late lunch and enjoyed the food and the laid-back vibe. The burgers were juicy and flavorful, the fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned just right, and the pretzels with beer cheese were warm, soft, and cheesy in all the right ways. The house-made beers were the perfect complement to the meal. I sampled a few before deciding on the Munich Dunkel which was smooth, a little dark, and very drinkable. They have a great selection of other brews made there on site, so there's something for everyone. Bonus points for being super dog-friendly. We also saw some young families with kids. We just popped by this place after going on a death march, I mean, hiking, and I was surprised by how much I loved it. When I think of a brewery, I just think of a place you can get beer. But this place was open and spacious with a view of the river. Not only that but my turkey wrap was absolutely delicious and so was my iced tea. I even went back for seconds. The girl working at the bar was really sweet and we had such a great time. From what I could tell there were a lot of locals there and people were there playing games, etc. If I wasn't so hot, tired and sweaty I would have stayed longer. I love this place! The people are so friendly, it is right next to the river (they have fully recovered) and the food is so good. I will admit I don't drink often, so I can't say anything about the beer. The vegan options are good. We have been with a vegan friend who said he liked the options available. As a vegetarian (flexetarian) I can say there are great options. Any burger can be made with a black bean patty they make in house and it is very tasty. I have had the patty melt with the black bean patty and add avocado, it is so good. Maybe a bit heavy with the oil/butter, so I don't get it as often as I want it. You can get the salad topped with the felafel or black bean patty. I have had it both ways and liked it. The appetizers are great. I love the pretzel, I get it with no salt and share with my dog who is welcome inside. The spinach artichoke dip is great and I love the little pitas it comes with. Dogs are welcome, they do need to not bark a lot and be ok with other dogs. We usually sit in a location that keeps ours happy and out of the way of other people walking by with dogs. Everyone seems good about keep a tight leash which I think makes it work. The only thing missing is a dog menu. I saw one at another restaurant and thought it is a brilliant idea for dog friendly places. I would suggest pretzels with no salt, fries with no salt, plain grilled chicken stripes, plain grilled burger patties. I know I would order those for my dog. He is not spoiled, lol. read more

First time going here! I was kinda of confused about the counter service at first and I guess it wasn't exactly horrible but I'm not a huge fan. We ordered our drinks. Me a nice hoppy IPA something like backwards... now we're talking! Very good! Boyfriend got a can of coke with a glass filled with ice. Ordered the pimento cheese dip with garlic naan bread. When I first saw it, I thought what in the world is this but it was very tasty and I absolutely loved the garlic naan! The vibe was really cool and very laid back! Music was great honestly! We sat on the deck by a creek. It was really nice! Finally went back to order some dinner. I got another beer called family tradition and it was delicious too! BUT! I got the club and wanted all ham with house chips. Ok... I literally just got a small ham sandwich. I really thought they would have put ham in place of turkey but uhhh no. See pictures... or if this is a club it clearly needs more meat because my boyfriend got the Rebuan sandwich and it was huge and piled with meat compared to mine and they were the same price!!!! The Old Fort Hillman is one of the last places I went out to before Helene. I am so glad to see they're serving their drinks again. I am not much of a beer person and had their in house seltzer which I really liked. Fruity and sweet but not too overwhelming. You have to order food and beer at a tablet while standing at the bar. 5. We waited quite a while before a server explained all of the above to us. Not my kind of place. But I gave it three stars because it is spacious and clean. What a pleasant surprise. The place was hopping (pun intended) on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. There's a large beer selection and the ESB was very well liked. The food is straight up bar food - burgers, wraps, and apps - but it's high quality and very well done. The 1/3 lb burgers use beef from Hickory Nut Gap Farms with a veggie alternative available. Chips are house made and fries or kale salad (!) are also options. Pickles and pickled veggies are also made in-house and both are excellent. Pimento cheese, again house made, was great. Not too much mayo, the right amount of pimento, and a nice little kick of spice. The ordering system can feel a little bass-ackward. Pretty much like Hardee's but with beer and wine. Order at the register, pay or start a tab, tell the staff where you're sitting, and you get a number to put on your table. Staff will bring your kitchen order to your seat. The staff is very kind, polite, and helpful but a little bit scattered. Food arrived with no forks to eat the veggies and it took a while to flag down someone to ask for ketchup and a while longer to receive it. Our pimento cheese app arrived after we'd finished our sandwiches and only after we'd reminded the staff that we hadn't gotten it. It took quite a while to show up but it was good. The restaurant is extremely dog-friendly, too. I would definitely look forward to returning. read more

I love Hillman Beer in Old Fort! I wish I lived closer and not three hours away. First, I love the ambiance. One whole side of the restaurant is open so you can enjoy the mountain breezes. I also love the lighting. You'll see the word "love" a LOT in this review. Another thing I love is my favorite beer - Old Fort Original. I wish it was sold in the Raleigh area! The bartenders and wait staff are friendly and attentive! The fries are my favorite - scalding hot and fresh out of the fryer every single time! PERFECTION!! What a cool place! My wife found on Yelp and bookmarked it. We drove by on our way to the Blue Ridge Parkway and it was not yet open because it was too early in the morning. It was probably for the best since I wouldn't have been ready to enjoy one of their beers. We continued on our way and explored part of the Parkway. On our way back we grabbed something to eat in Marion but afterwards we decided to come back to Old Fort to check out Hillman Beer before heading back to our hotel. We arrived about 6pm and the place was hopping. Many more people here than expected for the small town of Old Fort. The place has a very industrial feel which we both love. We walked in and looked around. Most of the tables were occupied so, we stood in line to order drinks, then found a couple of seats at the bar on the river side. I decided to try the Double Back Asswards Double Hazy IPA, my wife just wanted water. We brought a menu to check out and we both thought we should have waited to eat until we got here. The food being delivered to other tables looked amazing. We decided to try the appetizer of Pimento Cheese Dip which comes with roasty garlic naan bread. We have seen a lot of pimento cheese during our time so far in North Carolina but had never heard of it prior. We asked our server about it and she said it is really good, especially spread on a burger with bacon. We learned it is usually made with cheddar cheese, mayonnaise and pimento peppers. It can include onions, garlic and other seasonings. It is known as "The paté of the South." We learned the building was formerly a sock factory which is consistent with the textile industry in the area. The bar has at least 28 beers on tap and nine garage doors which open the bar to the patio seating on the river. They also sell a good amount of swag. Our appetizer arrived in a timely fashion and looked good. Both my wife and slowly tried the dip. We were both amazed. It was delicious, a little tangy but very good! We both thought it would be good as a spread on burgers. After getting back to our hotel, we put it on our list to pick some up and explore making our own. This was a really cool experience and we will be back. We will also recommend to others and bring relatives and friends here when they come to visit. read more

You order at the bar and then there are a bunch of different spots to choose to sit from. You can sit outside, inside, low table or high table. We ordered the Cuban (mustard on the side because I'm not a fan) and the patty melt, both were delicious! I subbed out the side of chips for the kale salad which I really loved. It was a little sweet from the dressing and raisins but there was Parmesan on top that gave it a little savory flavor which I really liked. We also tried 4 beers and loved them all! I have been here twice now & I enjoyed both experiences. You walk down a long hallway before you get to doors that lead to a wide open seating area with high ceilings and a view of the water. I like the availability of seating, there is plenty for small or larger groups. It is counter service so you order at the bar, put a number on your table & the food is brought to you. There is great selection of beers, I had a really good lager. The menu offers a variety of flavors & combinations so everyone in a group is bound to find something. Really loved this place! We'd been shopping for plants in Old Fort and were gasping hot. I'd seen the restaurant on Yelp and thought the menu sounded good. It was really bright and open, allowing for a great breeze to roll throughout the whole restaurant. We had a puppy with us and were able to walk him along the creek that runs right past the place. Then, we sat at the bar, along with our puppy. They allow dogs who are quiet, leashed, and well-behaved. One of our party wanted a beer and there was a nice selection of them. The menu also told the ABV, so you could choose to get a bit of a buzz or not. The waiter, who was so sweet and friendly, let her try several, so she could choose which she preferred. The food menu was decent. We tried the Artichoke Spinach Dip with Garlic Naan for dippers. I thought it needed a little bit of salt and lemon to wake up the taste, and it was a bit pricey for the size. But I took it home and it made a nice snack later that night. My mom got the Cuban and fries and really enjoyed it. They served a small spoonful on the side of each dish, which we think are carrots, pickles, cucumbers, and yellow bell peppers. I could've had an entire plate of that!! My mouth is zinging now, just thinking about it. My aunt and I got the Signature Burger. It had a really soft Brioche bun and a "special sauce" that just ran down your fingers. It was so darn good! I thought my side of fries was just okay and she didn't like her chips at all.
