What a great brewery! So much fun and adorably decorated. This comes from the twin that doesn't drink lol! I did have unsweetened ice tea and Dave had an IPA. We shared a rack of ribs that had 12 bones and 4 sides. The ribs were plain like I like them and there was an assortment of sauces to put on them. The platter came with corn bread. The sides were macaroni and cheese, smoked potato salad, cucumber salad and baked beans. There was plenty for us to share and have some to take home. We were able to bring Freckles to the Tap Room to eat with us and there was also an outdoor patio. Huge place! The seating was eclectic, high tops, regular tables, comfy lounge type chairs and tables. Friends of ours who stay in Arden told us about this place when we visited last year. Love the food. Love the people. My chief complaint whenever we try to just enjoy being outside at the brewery is the music is often just horrible. Full of angst. Loud. Not inviting for conversation. Not mountain happy, not even folk. We came for the bluegrass show. So why did it end with us being outside and being badgered by overly loud angsty music? I would just say: read the room. If people come for bluegrass-- maybe the music after should at least be in that wheelhouse. read more

12 bones Smokehouse is located just 10 minutes away from the Asheville airport. This location houses their taproom. They have all of their beers available as well as a full menu. They also have merchandise on sale, and feature plants grown from a local store! For my beer I got Beach, Please! Which tasted like an elevated Modelo - it was salty, sour (lime), and fruity (mango). I loved it! They have a great selection of BBQ and even better, they have a section on the menu called "Just a Taste", where you can order smaller portions to create your own sampler platter. I got the side of smoked turkey ($5) which was pretty good The 3 bones ($9) pineapple habanero flavored; they were generous and gave me more than 3 bones, and the sauce was actually kind of spicy but it was still flavorful and savory! And Jalapeño Cheese grits which were deeeeelicious! It was the perfect consistency and wasn't overly cheesy. The jalapeño pieces were diced so you were able to get some crunch in each bite. You order at the counter and they hand you a number. You're free to sit anywhere and they will bring your food out to you. They also bus the table for you, so you can get up and go whenever you're ready. They also have a patio that's dog friendly, and a restaurant side. Visiting from out-of-town and came across this restaurant while passing through, so we decided to give it a try. The building is quite spacious with separate taproom/bar area, dining area and ample seating. Some artwork adorned the walls on inside & outside of building. We tried to beat the dinner rush and arrived before 5pm on a Saturday. Business offers counter service ordering with table number/delivery. We ordered 2 sliced brisket plates [sides were baked beans & smoky potato salad and jalapeño cheese grits (heads up diced jalapeños are crunchy/raw) & mashed sweet potatoes], pulled pork sandwich w/chips & pulled chicken sandwich w/chips. Meals arrived promptly. Customers have choice of 4 sauces: spicy jalapeño (green), mustard bbq (yellow), spicy vinegar and sweet tomato. Husband raved about brisket and the kids enjoyed their sandwiches. Brisket is available until they sell out--and I would probably order brisket w/o raw onion topper. Staff were pleasant, friendly, efficient, and appear to take pride in their jobs. Down side is they do not offer french fries as a side and we didn't imbibe in adult beverages. Ribs are very tough with little smoke flavor. Sides are terrible and everything is overpriced. Warehouse setting which works for bbq but not clean. You would have never guessed it's this big from the outside when you're inside. It's like a huge garage with beer and the smoke from the BBQ! The atmosphere is perfect if you're visiting by yourself but you want good food and cold beer. Came here during St. Patty's day and to be honest, although it looked busy, it was still comfortable. I sat in the bar and was attended to immediately. I ordered a pint if the Stay Golden (light lager) and it's everything you want in a lager. Crisp, bubbly and hoppy. Not too hoppy though. $5 a pint so it's worth the price. Their bar chairs are so comfy that you can lean back and feel like you're sitting in your own living room. The music is definitely my taste, indie rock. They also have tv's to keep you occupied. What I really love is the decor. They have a turn table on the wall that changes every 5-minute ish. It changes to famous quotes that are witty but inspirational. I wish I had one in my living room. They also have a huge selection of beer that's meant for every taste bud so it's well rounded for all your friends and family. Fantastic local brewery with something for everyone on top. Got a flight and loved each one. The ginger beer (Ginger's Revenge) is a must try, as well as the peanut butter porter (works every time) AND the imperial stout (punks & poets). The layers of flavor and richness will make you savor every sip. I had the English pub ale (cheeky gander) which was nice too. Really, solid flight all around. Yelp is bit frustrating for brewery reviews in and around Asheville, as they are apparently ALL equally amazing. 12 Bones was OK, and the people were super nice. I felt bad about how little I liked the beers in my flight, however, and was disappointed in the ribs and sides as well. The flavor on the ribs was good, but they were too dry and clinging to the bones. I feel bad for saying it, but a return visit next time I'm in the area is unlikely in comparison to all the BBQ and breweries I visited over my time in Asheville. read more

We were in town for a long weekend and saw that a peanut butter porter was to be releases at 12 bones. I pride myself on being a porter and stout girl, so I was all about it. While I was not the biggest fan of the release, I was a huge fan of their patience level and kindness of the staff. I swear I likely tasted everything they had on draft and ended up with a kolsch. I got a tip that the Obama's insist on hitting up 12 Bones when in town so I made a point to check out their Arden location as it was close to the place I was staying. We went on the later side for dinner, ordered at the counter, and sat over in the brewery side. I was really hoping for brisket, but they had already sold the last of it for the night. I knew I also wanted to try the ribs so we got a platter with some sides, a thing of hash, and then ordered the bacon from the brewery side along with a couple beers. Everything was great and I'd have to say those are the best ribs I've ever had in a restaurant. Check out the sauce buffett too and try them all. The bacon was a fun side so make sure to check out the small brewery snacks as well. Plus the beers were all great. I even ended up buying a hat which has become a new favorite. Great brewery for the chill vibe and nice beer selection! There's two main rooms and you might not realize it unless you use the bathroom (which is in-between the rooms). One side seems cozier and has a flash board above the beer menu that rotates funny beer-related sayings. There is surely a beer to please everyone since they seem to have every beer style. Starting out with a flight seems a good way to go. I'm a hop-forward beer drinker so I enjoyed the All Disco No Panic hazy IPA and the Coastin' IPA. The Hop Shower Sour is a nice too. So my wife and I stopped in for some beers and food, the food you have to walk around to the front of the building to order but they deliver it to you and it's some killer BBQ. The set up is pretty cool here. I had the faded flannel and the fairly lively. They were pretty dang good. These ribs might possibly be the best I've ever had. We got there about 20 minutes to closing time after a long drive. It was obvious they were ready to go. Looked like they had already packed up everything. We ordered and were prepared to rake the food back to the hotel but there was a violinist playing in the brewery area so we took a table and ate. We could have bought half of what we did. Way too much food. The beans and slaw where good but honestly I could've just had the ribs and call it a day. WE came to this location to get the food and walked by the brewery and thought just take a peak inside. I saw a great deal on some already cold cans of their hoppy beer and decided to go beer instead of water. Win! And the bartender and the person I think may have been manager were so gracious and let me take a sample of the beer and chatted me up. This brewery was so great! We didn't end up eating here but we sat around for a while and had a few flights of beer. We liked 7/8 of the beers we tried and even ended up grabbing some cans to bring back home with us. The biggest plus for me was that they're dog friendly both outside and inside! We sat in the AC with our two pups and the staff was all super friendly, they came over to meet the pups and fill their water bowl. I wish we lived nearby so we could become regulars here! read more

12 Bones has always been a rather iconic establishment ever since Barack and Michelle ate there . . . twice! And it was one of the first places I ate BBQ in Asheville when I moved back here 14 years ago. I've always enjoyed the food, especially the sides dishes and of course the blueberry chipotle award-winning ribs. They have occupied three locations in that time and have settled into two - one over on Old Lyman Street and now the new location on Hendersonville Road which has the added attraction of a new brewery. Yes, they are now brewing and I have to say I'm very happy. I stopped by yesterday to meet some friends for a beer in the brewery section of the building. I was not disappointed. Forgive me if I backtrack for moment. I'm really into the local thing and it has taken a while for me to except places like Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and the sell-out of Wicked Weed but I've made my peace as these breweries have become rock-solid local. I love them all and especially Sierra Nevada for the incredible food and for really settling into the local scene with so many incredible beers made just for Asheville. My favorite beer they have brought to us has been Hazy Little Thing staring the hazy beer craze that is rippling through Asheville. BUT -- the Mic Drop hazy IPA at 12 Bones is stunning! I have a few favs in the town, one at French Broad, one at Wedge and now the Mic Drop at 12 Bones. I also tasted a porter that a friend was drinking and although I'm not a porter fan I'll be drinking it the next time I'm in. 12 Bones is committed to brewing quality beers and it's obvious to see why. I'm now a fan of the new brewery tap room and can't wait to go back. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood. Oh, and you can order food from the take-out side and they will bring it to you when it's ready. Solid brews. Had the saison and the citra IPA. Saisons are my favorite and this one didn't disappoint, maybe a little less funky than a typical saison but a very good drinker. I didn't get tired of it. The citra ipa does not go light on the citrus, has a mild bitterness on the finish. I'm not usually a big fan of this kind of bear but I enjoyed this one. The space is nice. It's a big warehouse but has low ceilings for a warehouse. It wasn't crowded on our visit but the space didn't seem very echo-y. That's a big plus in my book. There's a bbq place attached. They are separate businesses but you can get to one from the other and they will bring your food over to the brewery side if you order carry out. read more
