On a recent motorcycle ride from Phoenix, Ariz., my buddy and I stopped at this historical general store on the recommendation of locals. While I didn't order any food, I did order some fresh ice cream and sat at the soda bar. The service was extremely friendly, and the fresh strawberry ice cream was cold and tasty. Again, I didn't order any food, but the plates that were brought out for other tables smelled and looked tasty. The store was like a living museum, highlighting the ambiance and decades long past. I neat little hole in the wall. Friendly people, laid-back atmosphere, historical stuff all over the place. I ordered the enchiladas, red chili with an egg over easy. Sooooo good! They tell me that chili is vine ripened. That's what gives it a unique taste. You better not be in a hurry when you come here though. But worth the wait. read more

We are on a 7 weeks adventure through Southwestern US and currently in Las Cruses, New Mexico. We are from East TN and know a bit about Southern small town quaint and charm and now we know it Southwest Style. While out on a scenic drive on one of many of South New Mexico's byways, we happen upon, The Place, the very beautiful and friendly town of Hillsboro. Went into a Cafe straight out of a Novel or Poem. I was afraid of going in because I thought the place was too Perfectly placed in our Universe at the moment it had got to be a trap... Pure Perfection hidden in the back Country Ranches and charm of the 5 mile back Ol' Silver mine ghost town. This is the town, I warn you, you will want to relocate your life to. This Cafe had it all, Food and Love. Small Menu but Big in Comfort and Taste. Store is perfectly a museum of fun and lore. Had the pleasure of once again visiting and enjoying the small town welcoming atmosphere if Hillsboro NM. I went in first in the morning for a cup of coffee to kill time while my husband was making a bike trek up to Emory Pass. I was greeted warmly and soon was in a conversation with one of the local couples. I had to leave to make a rendezvous and said I'd be back. Later when I returned with my husband we were again greeted warmly and asked him how his ride was! The food was great. Cooked very well, we had the Percha sunrise and the Hillsboro Nip. Both were served with homemade fresh cut fries! You cannot pass on the dessert. We each had one! We normally share. Bumbleberry our a d Apple pie ala mode! Yummmn! read more

We ate there on 6/11/22 for lunch and have eaten there many times. They have really improved their wait times, used to be you could order breakfast and get it by lunch time. We had their chicken enchilada, me green wife red, which are always excellent. The tortillas were stacked, we prefer rolled, but they were tasty. Burgers are great and pies always a hit. This was the most unwelcome my family or I have felt walking in to a restaurant. Between seven of us, we ordered two coffees, two bags of chips, two sodas, two slices of pie ala mode, and three shakes. This apparently was not enough of an order for the two nastiest waitresses in the world as they felt the need to put our shakes in to-go cups and tell us they needed the table for another party. Told the waitress that this was the rudest I've ever been treated in a restaurant in my life. She just looked at me dumbfounded. I will never set foot in this establishment again as long as I live. read more

3 of us ate here on 02/09/2014, We each had the daily special, chicken thighs cacciatore with mashed potatoes, and green beans, Bumbleberry pie (mixture of fruits) with ice cream. The food was good, had to ask waitress every time when something was needed, she seemed more interested in visiting with her friends than serving the guests. Very old building but quaint. A good place for lunch. The Mexican food that came out looked very good. This was second time here and would eat here again read more

Love them! Such a great gem in a small town! I've been coming here for years and always look forward to it on my visits to NM! This place serves solid, consistently yummy food! The permanent menu contains some awesome southern New Mexico chile options like the delicious burrito and great green chile burger (burgers are great!) as well as fantastic specials like brisket sandwiches or chicken fried steak (this Texan approves!!) You definitely want to try to get there on those days!! Don't forget to get dessert, pie or ice cream and definitely try an amazing muffin at breakfast time! read more

Driving into Gila Forest we stopped in the town of Hillsboro. Lucky for us, this little gem of a cafe was the only place open. It was like walking into a old time cafe museum. Not knowing what to expect we ordered. I had a veggie burger. Not only was in not soy based or bean based, it was a true veggie burger. Zucchini, onions, all sorts of goodness. I had the fries with my burger. They were superb. What a great place in the middle of nowhere. If your driving through you got to stop. read more

On our way to Silver City, we thought we were very lucky to find this place open on a Monday. Not gourmet, but pleasant food and a varied menu, a cheerful and helpful waitress, a great setting with lots of history (ask about how the cash register used to work), and although we didn't try them, some wonderful looking homemade pies. We love old ghost towns and Hillsboro was on our list of places to see. We were told by the proprietress of the Black Range Museum to have lunch at this care. It is like dining in a museum. There are antiques everywhere. I had the veggie burger.... with grilled zucchini, onions, mushrooms covered with melted swiss cheese. Served on a yummy roll, it was delicious. My husband had the special, which was a meatloaf sandwich with french fries. The fries were hand cut, cooked crisp on the outside, soft inside. The meatloaf was very tasty. Both sandwiches were very large and even though we had planned to bring half home, we could not resist eating the plate clean. It is worth a trip through beautiful countryside to have a meal here. What a wonderful random surprise. Passing through we spotted this historic building with a cafe sign and since we were over due for breakfast we gave it a try. My father recommends the home made French toast and I really enjoyed the basic ham and egg breakfast. read more

What a great place. We had the Hillsboro hot dog and a vanilla malt. My wife is from Chicago and we have eaten many dogs all over, this was one of the best we have eaten. Great bun and dog but bacon and green chili put it over the top. The waitress was great and the store has more old west nostalgia than some small museums. We took home a slice of pie and I will up date tonight. The malt was hand made, large and very good. We will go back and try breakfast. The Bumbleberry pie was great. read more
