They never seem to disappoint. I had a rack and pinion issue with our car. I purchased one online thinking my friend can install it but he couldn't, so I called a few shops. Most don't do it because I didn't buy it from them. I started to worry thinking I may have to buy it again from one of the shops and pay 3x the price. I remembered Hillsdale Transmission, from a few years ago when they replaced the transmission in our van. They can do it, thank God! It's like an answered prayer all the way to the finish. I took my 2013 Acura MDX in for service. I have an intermittent problem with the shifting. I brought it in to get the vehicle fixed. The code wouldn't show up. The mechanic test drove it, and the issue would not show up. I was charged $185 for that. I was upset and voiced my complaint and was told they understood. And when I said I would not bring the car back, they understood that too. They feel they can't just check cars for free. I feel it's the cost of doing business. It's not like this issue happens every day. They could have worked with me for basically driving my car around for 20 min. Nothing was fixed. Nothing got diagnosed. But they still took their FULL RATE. I will not go back, and I recommend you don't either. read more

All I did was walk in the door there and ask for the price and estimate on how much it would cost to fix and repair a transmission for a 2004 LS model Chevrolet Trailblazer and he started giving me lip and attitude and bitched about the time of day that I walked through the door there. How can I sing enough Praise for Don and his team? I cannot do them justice. our 2007 Ford F150 had a blown transmission at 72k (VERY RARE) and he quoted me a price to do the typical soft rebuild which was more than fair. Once the transmission was apart, he called and indicated it was more complex, and required hard parts to be replaced as well. We gave him the go ahead, and the truck was ready three days later! Upon picking the truck up, he had all the bad parts cleaned and sitting in his office to show us EXACTLY what had happened to damage the parts, and explained the trans warranty, and the additional cost, which was 1/5th of what I thought he was going to tell me! I use these people every 30,000 for my transmission service. They are not only honest, but they repaired a dipstick tube, for free, welding it back together on my previous visit. It must have taken them at least 45-60 minutes, and they didn't charge me. This time, I had a rattle and I thought it was in my drivetrain. I brought it to them expecting the worst. They diagnosed me for free and sent me away with a referral of another station that does muffler and exhaust systems. These guys are honest to the letter, and I trust them unconditionally. My car didn't reverse for the longest time - I kid you not, I drove around for almost 7 months not being able to reverse (can you say, put the car in neutral and push or always parking in spots that were pull through accessible?). This place was recommended to me by another repair shop I went to previously. I paid in cash so they were able to negotiate with me on the price. It's been almost a year since they rebuilt the transmission and everything is still running great - PTL! ... I will say, not being able to reverse for so long and then finally being able to made me appreciate the reverse and all the parts that keep my car running so much more. Had an issue with a manual shifter that my usual mechanic didn't want to deal with, so I took it to Hillsdale. The reverse lockout was broken, and I had seen some info online that it could be an adjustment so I asked them to take a look, and crossed my fingers. Nope, needs a new shifter assembly. Ok, so they look up the part and tell me it's $700+. Well that's three times what I can find it listed for online, but the online store didn't really have it in stock, so fine. A 300% markup on parts seems steep, but alright, I just want this thing fixed. A few days later, turns out the shifter isn't stocked OEM new in the US anymore. Ok, so let's get a used one. They order a used one, and it shows up a week later... broken. They order another one, but after waiting another two weeks, the supplier says he didn't really have it and wasn't going to find another one. At this point, Hillsdale transmission has had my $200 deposit for weeks, and they've given up. Thanks for trying, I guess. I'll figure it out myself. Now, this is where it gets shady. I call back to ask if there was a specific part that was broken in the shifter, or what they determined was the issue that caused them to suggest replacing the shifter assembly. I can find specific parts, just not a complete assembly and, since they've given up on the job, I thought they might provide me some info to help me on my way. Nope. All they know is that they needed to replace the assembly, but don't "remember" why, and are obviously irritated and impatient with the question. Turns out that just the shifter base needed to be replaced since the plastic piece that prevents the shifter from moving to reverse without pushing down was broken off. This was a $60 part that was available on multiple parts sites, and I replaced it myself (having never touched a shifter before) in about an hour! I AM BEYOND DISAPPOINTED that Hillsdale was so lazy, incompetent or dishonest that they wanted to charge me $800 for this fix. STAY AWAY! read more

My transmission gave out on the 92W late this afternoon heading from Alameda to San Mateo - it was not a good time for this to happen and the bill will be ugly.... you think this evening i'd be moping around, and that'd probably have been the case if it weren't for the above and beyond customer service I received from co-owner Rick Amos - he was amazing, and expert in tranny's with 25 years of experience and great guy who educated me on the possibilities, explained the process, and put me at ease. I thought I had found a reputable transmission shop. I spent $2,600 to have my transmission completely rebuilt. It lasted for one day (less than 40 miles). Completely dead. I had to have it towed from Pacifica to San Mateo. I had to rent a car to go to work. They fixed the transmission again, but refused to reimburse me for the tow and the rental (less than $200). I will never go back to Hillsdale. (And I own a lot of cars) I will not recomend Hillsdale to any family member, friend or co- worker. I am very disappointed in the way they handled the situation when I returned the car. They made me feel as though it was my fault. Shame on Hillsdale Transmission. read more

I took my van in for its transmission check-up today and was reminded of what an amazing place this is. A couple of months back my 2000 Honda van's transmission went out. These guys gave me a fair price that definitely made it worth saving the old gal, even though she has 205,000+ miles on her. Was referred to Hillsdale Transmission by our regular mechanic. They were able to do a repair within a couple days and avoided a more costly transmission replacement. The guy that answers the phone and writes up the bill isn't the most dynamic fellow, but he was pleasant, the repair was timely, and we got our car out of there at their quoted price (no surprises). That was almost 2 months ago... so far so good. Would have been 5 stars, but I had to take initiative a few times to find out status. I was referred to this shop by a friend when I though I was having transmission problems with my Honda Civic. I spoke to Don and explained to him what was going on with my car and he told me to bring it in. The shop itself was very clean and decorated really cool racing/antique car theme. The shop took a look at my car and found out it was not the transmission at all. They told me exactly what was wrong with it (as they could not fix it as they are a transmission shop and my issue was not at all transmission related) and did not charge me for the inspection. I really appreciate the fact that they were honest with me and did not try to sell me something that I did not need. I worry about who to take my car to when there's an issue and it is so nice to know that there are honest folks out there that are not trying to make a buck. As a woman who is comfortable with wielding tools, I don't shun from getting dirty while doing minor maintenance on my cars. However, I still have yet to find an auto repair shop who I can trust to do major mechanical work. When I discovered that my transmission was leaking oil, I was none-to-pleased with having the task of finding a reputable transmission. My co-worker recommended Hillsdale Transmission. I was skeptical because his last recommendation for an auto repair shop was not as satisfactory as he described. I assumed the obvious. With the leak becoming more consistent, I reluctantly called Hillsdale Transmission and spoke with Don. He was professional, scheduled an appointment and estimated the cost to replace the seal and transmission fluid. When I went to my appointment, the shop was clean and Don was pleasant and efficient. I picked up my car in the afternoon and the cost came well under the estimate! A couple of days later, I was noticing a small spot of fluid accumulating under my car. I called Don to request a follow-up inspection and he told me to bring the car back. With trepidation I was thinking, "Oh great, here is where I get slammed!" Don called me in the afternoon and informed me that my car was ready for pick up. He mentioned that the washer for the drain plug was worn and that it was an easy fix! Moreover, he mentioned that there was no charge! When I picked up the car, I mentioned that I will compensate him for his follow-up services. He insisted there was no charge. Great customer service!
