I just had 4 yards of topsoil delivered and everything from the in-person purchase to the explanation of the weather factors to the delivery was perfect. I was given the option to have mushroom soil mixed in to help the grass seed. They are honest and reliable and the quality plus delivery was worth the cost. A great place to buy your flowers. I have had pansies planted in the fall and they bloom through spring. The annuals I planted in the summer grew two feet high. They were amazing. Don't forget to bring home their oatmeal cookies. Delicious! read more

I am sure this place will get an extra star or two once the new building/location is updated. We've been using this Nursery for years. - Customer service is great - Staff is knowledgeable. - prices are great (even cheaper then Home Depot on plants). We purchased plants, rocks, mulch plus so much more. They deliver for a small fee. There is a large selection of items to purchase. I'm glad they erected a new building and greenhouse and can't wait until it's finished. The building they currently have is run down and there a ton of weed growing out of the grown in the area where customers need to shop for plants. Parking is minimal in the gravel/dirt type small lot. Will I be back? Yes. read more

I love Hillside Nursery. I've never gotten anything but wonderful quality of flowers from them.

I've been to this place a few times, and I am always turned off that their employees smoke cigarettes inside, it has a partial open wall, but it's still inside to me. However it is the closest greenhouse and nursery to me so I still went back a few times. But I will not be going back again - the workers inside right now are not wearing masks Nor are the employees outside who are in close contact with shoppers. Must be the worst small business in Delaware County. Always extremely rude when you called to ask a question always seem bothered to serve you. Especially if you order something and ask for delivery totally unreliable left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Hillside nursery moved, and is a much different experience from what previous yelpers have had. Their location is now on Jackson Street,it's essentially diagonal from the Kmart if you're at the intersection of Baltimore pike and Jackson. The hours on the chalkboard out front are listed as "hit or miss, if you can catch me." The woman who ran it clearly had this nursery as her passion project, her greenhouse was filled with props for weddings, which she said was her primary business. She worked out of a 150+ year old cabin sort of tucked back. She spent a good ten minutes explaining how to prune my new flowers, and other care tips. She offered fair and pretty cheap prices for some of the healthiest flowers I've seen. I'd really recommend this place, so long as her hours aren't that "hit or miss." We were there at 9am Monday. read more

My wife and I were about to pay for three bags of mulch we dragged up to the front my wife stopped at the door reading the two handmade signs posted on the door. One said,NO MASKS NEEDED FOR EMPLOYEES OR CUSTOMERS WE RUN OUR BUSINESS OUR WAY. the other one said WE CANT FIND HELP BECUSE PEOPLE ARE HAPPIER TO COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT RATHER THAN WORK FOR A LIVING. Making political statements on the front door was totally uncalled for and maybe they should pay people more than unemployment wages and the could get decent help. We left our cart full of mulch and walked out. We don't want to give our hard EARNED money to rude ignorant people like this, EVER! We got the same mulch at H.D. right up the hill for less money and bought several beautiful shrubs which Hillside had a very poor selection of. Having worked for H.D. A few years back, I know they pay much more than starvation wages. Skip Hillside, shop elsewhere for good customer service, lower prices, and nicer people!! read more

I bought 4 potted flowered plants on Saturday afternoon and they were shriveled and dying by Monday. Never buying from there again, even though it's very close to home. Plus, I waited for over 5 minutes for the woman at cash register to acknowledge my presence. That's one of my pet peeves. read more

They have what you need and want. The people are honest and won't sell you stuff just to sell stuff. The prices are not bad either.

We had a sod project for our home, and could not find anyone with inventory. A local supplier near our home gave us the run a round for a week. (Orner's). My wife found this nursery who had it in stock. They were accommodating by holding 25 pieces for us. (Something the other supplier would not do). Upon arrival the employee at the desk greeted me and acknowledged my order and I was loaded up and on my way in minutes. Half way through the job we needed 5 more pieces, I called them back and they were able to supply me with the additional sod as well. Overall a great example of customer service and how to run a business. We will be using them for all our nursery needs moving forward read more

I feel ripped off. Poor quality trees installed which died. Attempts to contact them to resolve were ignored. Never again.

AWFUL! So close to home...and yet so far from what I would want or need in a garden center. Unhelpful staff, everyone seemed more than content to stand around smoking while I needed help. Not one person was willing to stop what they were doing to assist a woman with a young child and a long list of items to purchase for a vegetable garden. I vote with my dollar and took it elsewhere. The plants honestly didn't look so great anyway, so I guess you do get what you pay for. I won't bother again unless they clean up their act (literally) and learn how to provide customer service. read more

This place generally has a good selection and decent prices however the persons checking you out usually are rude and couldn't care less about their customers. No exception today- usually I just go with it but no one wearing a mask and no one wiping down handles of carts. This nursery is less than a mile from our house, so it is appealing. We also enjoy supporting locally owned independent businesses. The nursery has a fairly good selection of the more common plants. All that said, the rude smoking woman at the front desk is every reason not to shop here. In fact, when we visited today, not only was the woman smoking, but three male workers on the screened in shelter on the front of the business were smoking. It was totally gross. I would shop at Home Depot and Lowes just to avoid the smoke. read more

This is NOT the place to go for top soil! I had 2 yards of "top soil" delivered, and what arrived was ROCKS and CLAY. After calling and trying to reach the owner for a week, I've given up. Joe, the owner doesn't return calls, doesn't return emails and doesn't care. I sent pictures of the "soil" full of rocks and the assistant who answers the phone said that this was the only problem they've had in 30 years. If thats the case (which I doubt) then why not make it right? I wanted them to come and remove the 4 yards which I've paid for, and bring real top soil but after waiting for a week.... DON"T USE THIS NURSERY FOR TOP SOIL!!! read more

Like the other review have said, went to this nursery for convenience but ended up leaving in disgust at the rude woman smoking, inside, while at work, IN A NURSERY! Is this a joke? She comes with the building? I'm pretty sure it is illegal to smoke in businesses and there is no way you are obligated to allow an employee to smoke all day while INDOORS. This place is so gross. I'll go out to a farm or into the city to spend my money in a cleaner, kinder establishment. I've been going to this nursery for over 25 years. They have the widest selection of shrubs, plants and flowers available and the plants are always healthy and most even manage to thrive despite my lack of a green thumb. I love the place! As to the comments other reviewers have made about the staff, etc., they just don't understand local color. Take in the whole experience - what a gem to find a business family-owned since the 50s in Clifton Heights with great products. 20 years from now, retail will be nothing but Big Box Stores with robots. Savor the unique experience. And as to the cashier, she may seem gruff but she is actually very kind & a joke or some kidding will always get her to crack a genuine smile. read more

I stopped into this business on my way to an appointment in southern Delaware County. Rather than greeting a potential customer, 5 or 6 employees stared at me like prisoners would from their cell. When asked about mulch availability, I was simply pointed to a pile "over there." Accordingly, I drove over the hill to Home Depot and bought my mulch from a portly and jovial woman who actually cared that I was there. read more

I have stopped by this nursery a number of times over the past two years since discovering it and they always have a relatively good selection of plants and mulch. I really prefer shopping at independently owned shops over big box stores such as Lowe's as I like that my shopping dollars stay in the local area. I am usually out this way on Monday's as I have a standing appointment in Lansdowne so if you need anything put in your order. Today however I will be going to Bala Cynwyd and doing some shopping at Albrecht's which is fancier and larger - it is the Main Line ya know? Hillside is very basic but the product is good. Also, they will load heavy bags of mulch and large plants in your vehicle for you which is a service you can't get at Home Depot! read more

Called ahead to check if they had a certain plant in stock. Was told that they did so I drove there only to find that they hadn't even gotten the first shipment of them in (wasn't like the last one had just been bought or anything). Couldn't even take the 15 seconds to check on a plant? read more

Do not purchase sod from hillside. Terrible sod, worse customer service. When the sod arrived (we installed it ourselves immediately as all the prep work - top soil, etc. - was done ahead of time), several strips were either black and rotted or straw-like/dead. We installed the healthy pieces and threw away the bad ones, wasting money. We watered the sod every morning for 5 weeks and did not go on the lawn. Whole strips were dying off and did not take to the soil. off After 5 weeks, we watered the sod every other day and only used it minimally. The grass continued to die. Now, 3 months later, the yard is 80% dirt. We called the store and explained all of the above to see if there was anything they could do, and the woman who answered the phone said the manager would call us back. A few days later without ever hearing from him, we called again. Still no return call. The third time we tried to get in touch with the store the phone just rang and rang. Do not waste your time or money on Hillside sod. Given their poor customer service I would also advise not wasting time or money on any of their other products either. read more

I had a great experience at Hillside. I hadn't been there in a while because I don't live that close anymore, but I had called and they had some plants I needed. The selection was very good--a few things out of the ordinary. Prices were reasonable. A young man waited on me and he couldn't have been better. He was friendly, knew the stock, made good suggestions, and helped me load my purchases into my car. I'll be back. read more

I went there a about two years ago in the spring to buy plants. Poor customer service. They were not interested in me. At the time they were the only place that had large coleus plants I needed. When I paid cash the woman would not allow me to put the money in her hand. I had to place it on the counter!!! I'm 70 years old and never forgot what that meant. I shop at stores in North Carolina when visiting family and that stopped years ago. I don't shop where I'm me and my money aren't appreciated. After that, for gardening it's Lowes, Home Depot, or Walmart. read more

I have been here several times and really like this place. It has tons of plants you will never find at Home Depot. Sure some aren't marked and they are bit disorganized but it helps I know plants and I can just pick out what I like and figure out what most things are. If I can't figure them out I just ask. I love supporting local places and go here over HD anyday for plants and landscaping needs. Other reviewers have complained about the customer service but I have never had an issue. They are very nice and helpful and offer to load in heavy stuff for you. Maybe since they aren't dressed in a clean Home Depot shirt they don't seem nice or something?....lol I give 4 stars only because of the slight disorganization of the plants and folks who aren't sure what everything is will get overwhelmed and dicouraged I imagine. read more

This place has everything, all types of quality plants, trees, mulch, landscaping materials. Better selection and stock than any chain store or even nurseries aimed towards commercial landscape contractors. I recommend people to come here all of the time. The people working here are great. One time they gave me a box of shirts since they said I am always coming in wearing the same old work shirt.. Once I had a tiller that wouldn't start and the owner fixed it for me. One time they offered me some of their dinner since when they asked how I was doing, I said I was hungry. The complaints about the workers at this place in other reviews are confusing to me. I am the grumpiest, old bastard in a 100 mile radius and these people always go out of their way to help me. I moved late last year and regret I don't purchase from them as often as I would like. read more

I have been getting my Christmas trees, Poinsettia and greens from Hillside for over 20 yrs! Never had a bare tree by Little Christmas! They are great! I wanted to like this place, because it's pretty convenient to where I live, but I couldn't get over how surly and rude the staff were. First of all, the woman at the front desk was smoking, which is just unpleasant and I'm sure it can't be good for the plants. Second of all, everyone was hostile and gruff, and complaining loudly about how awful and rude their customers are! Some nerve. No one asked if I needed any help or was looking for anything. The plants looked okay, nothing special. If you dislike customers so much, why are you in a service industry? I don't understand it. read more

AWFUL!! We ordered sod, fertilizer, lime and seed to re-do my mother's backyard for Mother's Day. When I called the Wednesday prior to MOther's Day and spoke to Joe- he was very abrupt on the phone, but said they would deliver it on Friday. Friday came and nothing showed up, no phone call. When I called at 4:45 pm- an older woman started screaming at me that it wasn't her problem and the sod truck hadn't come back yet. When I asked if there was any way to find out what time it would be delivered she just said huffed and puffed and yelled "TONIGHT!" - then hung up on me. No return call, and no sod was delivered on Friday. On Saturday morning when I called at 8am (because we only had 1 day to do this project, we needed it there first thing Saturday), I was again greeted on the phone by a younger woman who also seemed annoyed that I called. I was told to call back later (she was on the phone with the credit card company for a broken machine) and that it wasn't her problem. My husband decided to drive over and check on our delivery where he was greeted by a man (I assume Joe) and then the issue began. My husband pointed out that we made a purchase, set an agreed-upon time for delivery and no one bothered to call us and let us know it wasn't coming. Joe said, "It's not my problem, it'll get there when it gets there" To which my husband responded that we tried to do the right thing and support local business and not go to Home Depot down the street. Joe's Response? "YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO F#$%KIN HOME DEPOT!!!" Within an hour a delivery guy showed up, but only with the sod, he forget the lime, fertilizer, and seed we also bought and had to go back for it. He even apologized for his boss and said that everyone who works there is like that. Sad to say, since I'd love for small local businesses to thrive, this place can't close soon enough!!!! read more

I called and expressed that i was not happy with there product and they were nothing but rude and were basically like tuff S**T and dared me to go down to the store if i had any balls!! lol Yet if he had any balls he delivered the material he would of showed up at my door.
