Their garden & nursery specialists are very helpful & well educated when trying to identify plant diseases when bringing clippings in ziplock bags & will test your soil's ph. They have a good selection & variety of all your garden needs; from tools, supplies, plants, pots, trees, decorative garden items to delivered stone, mulch, sand, garden top soil, rain barrels to Ladybugs. Ive gotten other plants, trees & garden soil from a dozen of the local nurseries & landscapers from this area & was truly disappointed after doing so. I ended up with diseased areas from their bad soil that had invasive weeds to finding an animals leg in it; their trees died after arriving sickly & most or all of the plants I picked up died were already sick & none of them survived or stood by their warranties. The only reason I even went somewhere else was because Primex didn't have it in stock or I was out in the area & wanted to try some of their plants in my garden & picked them up on the fly. I was looking for a gift for a friend. She loves plants, so I decided to get one for her garden. Primex Garden Center was the perfect place! They have any kind of plants that you're looking for. Indoor plants, outdoor plants, trees, shrubs etc. Anything that you need for your lawn or garden. Their prices are not bad either. I was looking for a perennial plant. My friend likes plants that come back year after year. I chose a stargazer plant, with the help of one of the employees. Their staff is great! I had lots of questions about other plants and they were very helpful. Primex Garden Center is nestled within Glenside PA. They have been in business since 1943. Their hours are Mon - Fri 8:00 - 5:00pm, Sat, 9:00 - 5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00 - 4pm. I would highly recommend them and would definitely go back! read more

I had a lovely experience at Primex, save for a few minor issues, all of which I feel are not in the control of Primex, but you should be aware of. Let's get the negative out of the way first because they're minor issues which, again, I feel is not in their control: space. The parking situation especially during busy spring weekends is rough. People are double parking, people are crowding the nearby residential streets, and in some cases you just can't find anywhere to park. So be prepared to circle if you go during a super peak time. And be careful because people are wandering about along the car paths just trying to get places. But if you go on a weekday, or later in the afternoon on a weekend during planting season, you should be fine. But, the reason it's so packed there leads me to the positives, the overwhelming positives! Primex is without a doubt the best garden center I have found anywhere in the greater Philadelphia area. And I have been to quite a few since I was a child. The selection is astounding, the grounds are sprawling (but still packed to the brim with stuff). There's multiple sections: an indoor supply store, outdoor greenhouse, a barn, an outdoor supply section to get your dirt and mulch etc. They supply you with all the good stuff too. I was happy they had Fox Farm brand soil there - they know their stuff. Their prices are acceptable too. It's not cheap like if you went to a big box store or a chain. You're going to pay a few bucks more. However, their prices still come in under some other local Philly small business garden centers. And with the selection and army of employees Primex has, that's a big win in my book. Primex is a lovely garden store. It is situated along the train tracks in glenside. The parking lot in the front often gets congested, but there are more spots if you go towards the back of the complex. There is a store that sells gardening supplies, a greenhouse structure, and also an outdoor yard with mulch, trees, shrubs, and other plants. Primex has really knowledgeable staff working there. The plants are robust. There are also some "exotic" things which are not native to our area, like olive trees. Whenever I go, i want to buy everything i see because it's so beautiful. This place inspires you to plant stuff. A colleague of mine had someone from primex come to his home, look at the yard, and give recommendations on how to make it nice. Parking: Very hard especially during peak hours! Once you're past the main parking drive towards the exit as there's additional parking. Pack patience because traffic can be congested. Atmosphere: relaxing and energizing at the same time! Sooo many flowers!!! Service: Most of the associates are very knowledgeable and if they aren't, they'll get someone who is. I love Michelle. Holy mackerel, this place is amazing. I'm a recent transplant to the area, and finally trying my hand at gardening now that I actually have a home and some green space to work with. Folks on the local FB page recommended this place, and now I know why. My first amazing tip was to contact Primex for a "garden consult" at my house. In exchange for $75, a lovely man named Tom came and spent over an hour at my property, serving as an endlessly patient teacher and resource. I took copious notes on my phone as we talked, which I'll be referencing for years to come as I work towards beautifying our outdoor space. Things we covered: -what kinds of plants might work in which spaces -- specific plant recommendations (e.g., not just "hydrangeas," but "oak leaf hydrangeas") -what I can cut back and when and how -ideas on how I can build the garden slowly, in phases -what works best from a pollinator perspective -suggestions on how to manage tricky corners and areas (shady spots, root competition) -how to tame weeds A couple weeks later, armed with my phone list, I headed over to the store itself. There is a main building with gardening supplies and then a big greenhouse/outdoor area with plants. There's also a warehouse behind the main building where you pick up big items (e.g., lots of mulch or soil). I found the main building to have lots and lots of great stuff, including things I'd been unable to find at Unnamed Big Box Garden Center. The person I spoke with was tremendously helpful in answering all my questions. Once I'd finished with the main building, I went out to the greenhouse/outdoor area to try and track down my target plant for this trip: a lilac bush. The place is nicely organized (annuals, indoor plants (even carnivorous plants!!), bushes, trees, etc. That said, a lot of things didn't have tags, so as a gardening newbie, I was 100% overwhelmed. No worries! I found Annie, who took me to the lilac bushes, where she and Tim helped me figure out the kind I wanted, and oriented me to the area. Tim clued me into their plant guarantee program, carried my plant to my car, and explained how to pay for it. I rolled out of there, swung by the warehouse to get some mulch and my rain barrel, and came home feeling like I'd hit the jackpot. I loved how local the place felt and how I feel certain I'll get to know the staff there on subsequent visits. In terms of service, there is absolutely no comparison to a big box store -- even though it was a ridiculously busy Sunday in late spring, three different staff members were incredibly patient and thorough with me. I called the other day, asking if Primex carried a fairly obscure native shrub called diervilla. Without missing a beat, the lady who answered, "Yeah. We got that." I then asked, "Do you have the Kodiak Black variety?" She said, just as quickly, "Yeah. We got lots." Every other garden center (some are quite big operations) I called said, "Let me check," or a flat "no" (One place told me that didn't have any, but I later discovered that they had, like Primex, "lots."). I just needed one, but highly skeptical that Primex was telling the truth, drove about 20 miles to get there. They had lots. Very tidy yard, and the plants are meticulously cared for by the friendly staff. If you want something different, something to be first on your block with, like diervilla, Primex is a good bet. Parking lot is indeed fairly small, as others have noted, so get there early on the weekends. I live in Brooklyn, but my husband and I came across this place while visiting his parents. We got some really cool plants including these tiny little mini plants I'd never seen before. That was over a year ago and I struggled to find this place again when I was in the area, but I'm so glad I figured it out bc since the last time I had been there I couldn't find anywhere near the variety of unique plants in Brooklyn. I would easily have to go to 3-4 different places in BK and I still haven't found a place with all these mini plants. They also have a good selection of stylish planters for excellent prices. I generally don't like pots available at garden centers, preferring to go kind of far and wide to curate. Then the customer service. Wow. I was there at the end of the day, with all of my pots from home with me - totally on a mission of mixing and matching and the young women who worked there were SO helpful in suggesting different pot/plant combos and were very knowledgeable about the different light needs of each. It truly was a team effort and they went above and beyond. Not to mention everyone helped me wrangle my very curious dog after she was got too hot in her carrier with this 90 degree weather. Topped it all off with helping me load my car. I love coming to Primex, even just to browse the gorgeous containers and plantings, and to wander the huge greenhouses. I've purchased several houseplants and outdoor hanging containers here and all are healthy and thriving. The prices are a bit higher than other shops, but when you consider that you are often paying for established, mature plants that require less maintenance than a youthful sprig, it's worth it! My cacti, venus fly trap terrarium, stag horn ferns, fiddle leaf ficus tree, and air plants are thriving in my happy, green home. The staff are incredibly knowledgable and helpful about the needs of specific plants and can help you make selections that will thrive. PRO TIP: there's a huge parking lot in the back, past the mulch. read more

Great selection with high prices and bad parking. What really keeps me coming back are the friendly and knowledgeable nursery staff! They are always helpful and have gone the extra mile to help me find just the right plants. Unfortunately, a notable exception is Mark, the manager. When I had a problem, he was very rude, aggressive, and publicly confrontational - even insisting that he didn't care if he lost me as a customer because he had plenty more! I couldn't believe the way he treated me. Ultimately, he agreed to fix the problem "if you want to beat me up about it" and stormed off in a huff. Finally got out to Glenside to see what Primex is all about. It is compost heaven! Aside from a really wide variety of pots (putting Home Depot and Lowe's to shame in both price and style), tools and garden twirly wirlies, they stock all kinds bird feeders/houses, and you canchose from a bunch of different types of compost kits/bins. They carry the worm factory, which I own and love. Since my worms are taking their sweet time making compost, I just grabbed some compost starter at Primex to boost the second layer of the worm factory. They also have organic potting soil and plant fertilizers. I didn't look super hard but I didn't see any TerraCycle Plant Food (worm tea, since I can't get this from my worms yet either). I wish more stores carried this stuff. I use it all the time and my houseplants love it! What I love most: you can recycle your plastic plant pots and flats there! read more

I used to live near Primex and fell in love with them. They have a fabulous array of indoor and outdoor plants, including some that are fairly unique and hard to find. They have all the supplies you could need and the staff are garden savants. They take such excellent care of their plants. It's like a botanical garden but you can take the plants home. I've since moved away and still often make the 45-minute trek to visit because it's just so lovely to visit. read more
