We are visiting from out of state and stumbled upon this place at random because it's close to where we are staying. 10/10 Atmosphere was cozy and layout was unique. Our waitress couldn't have been lovelier. Service was very good even though they were busy. Food was great! Some of the best hollandaise sauce I've had. The menu is also much more unique than your standard breakfast fair. Some of their scramble combos blew my mind. Lots of Benedict options to choose from, too! It was fairly bland, pedestrian, nothing special whatsoever. My dining partner got the pancake with Maine blueberries. It's a very cakey type of pancake. Large. I read they serve real Maine maple syrup on a site when deciding on coming here but was disappointed to see they charge an extra $2.50. Hmmmmm Service was lacking. I feel like they were short handed or servers over working too many tables. I got up to get my own Tobasco sauce since there was nobody around and my sandwich was half eaten while waiting for someone to come by. Overall, I left wanting more. Bayside is always the best experience for me. I went for Sunday brunch with my cousin and we only had to wait about 25-30 mins. 100% worth the wait. They have limited seating between the downstairs and upstairs. They do have a few tables outside in the warmer months. Once seated we were given water. We ordered drinks first. They took a little while but not too long. The server helped with any questions on the menu. We ordered and got the food in a good amount of time. The food was fantastic. I got an omelette with their honey wheat toast. Everything was so delicious. I love the three potato homefries/hash. The prices are totally worth it. Immediate 10/10!! The food was phenomenal served hot and fresh. Every bite of food packed a delicious punch that had my licking my fingers! Heading to Bayside American Cafe for brunch is literally a treat. In a quirky part of the old port, you'll find a gem of a restaurant. The staff are friendly and the bottom level allows an open view into the kitchen - which I always appreciate. The food is wholesome and delicious, and the menu is plentiful! Came for breakfast on Memorial Day and the place was mobbed. Very glad we left and came back the next day. Delightful old building with tables scattered in all nooks. Ate upstairs in a lovely booth. Had to have lobster one last time in Portland - I had the lobster scramble (add the homemade biscuit, they're outstanding) and hubby had lobster benedict. Both meals had a ton of lobster meat and were delicious. The potatoes were also wonderful, my husband hardly ever eats them but loved these. Our service was very slow but very friendly. The classic everything was cooked just the way I like it. The eggs not over scrambled the home fries nice and tender and the sausage cooked well done. The waffles had sweetness to them already didn't really need syrup. The bacon I should've requested to be crunchy. Our waitress Jade was very friendly and helpful with helping us get familiarized with the menu. She made sure we had everything we needed and she is much appreciated for her service. This is has a loud ambiance because it is definitely full to capacity for breakfast and now I see why. Everything the offer is well worth coming here to get. Second time at this place. First time was remarkable. However, times have changed. We intentionally showed up at opening time so we could sit at bar. We were scolded by the waitress who said "next time please wait to be seated because it throws off her whole schedule". The drinks that were amaxing last time (bloody mary and irish coffee") were average at best. The bloody mary was actually quite good to be honest. I stopped in before heading to the airport and usually I never have to high of expectations when it comes to breakfast food. I mean its just eggs and pancakes right? Well Bayside American Cafe blew my socks off! Everything was absolutely delicious and the bartenders were great and personable, i'm not sure her name but she wore a seagull on her shoulder and she provided amazing service! I tried the crabcake benedict and the bacon + cheddar + scallion pancake with bourbon maple syrup and both were divine! That may be one of the best benedicts i've ever had and those potatoes were perfectly seasoned! Everything tasted fresh and cooked with care. We came here at 10:30 on a Saturday. I will say there was a long wait, but it was worth it. They will put your name down and text you when they have your table ready. Unfortunately they were really understaffed the first time we came (graduation weekend) and two servers were running their behinds off up and down the stairs to take care of everyone. I'm sure we'll be back as we are walkable, though brunch is a bit pricy for locals to come often. I do really like that you can order many things a la cart to get exactly what you want. Had the most wonderful breakfast at Bayside. We arrived around 7:30 am, which was perfect timing because the place was almost empty. I heard this place books up super quickly so we were happy to beat the crowd. Had an amazing server and the most delish food. My husband got the lobster Benedict, he did say that it was not 100% worth it for the amount of lobster you get. I got the Maine blueberry pancakes with real Maine maple syrup with a side of bacon. It was SO GOOD! The pancakes are HUGE so one would have been enough for me but I did 2 and my husband had some. We also got the starter of the fiddleheads which were amazing! Ordered the kids portion and it was still huge. Sat at the bar but the whole restaurant has a cozy feel. Exactly what you're looking for at breakfast. Parking is the only thing that kinda stinks but I would never let that ruin this meal. The kiss on the forehead for me is their homemade hot sauces. Classic breakfast spot a little north of downtown! We got there around 9:45 on Friday morning and there was a bit of a wait, but we were able to be seated within 10-15 minutes. You can put your name in for them to text you when your table is ready too. We were marveling at the old timey decor and framed menus from years when lobster cost $1.50! Was excited to get here. Love the ambiance, it's a cozy place with some upstairs and downstairs seating and they also have patio seats. The food "looked" great and our host and server were both awesome BUT, the food was bland. Hence 3.5! BF had to add hot sauce (they have homemade sauces which he said were great) to his corned beef. Some of the potatoes in my side hash were not fully cooked. The flavor was great for mine. We wouldn't rush to go back here. Parking might be tough but you can always look for a few blocks away to park and walk here. Stately second floor dining room in one of Portland's bleakest neighborhoods. Meter parking if you can find it. High concept. High prices. That's okay, quality is worth it. But was there any? Coffee: Strong, but unusually sour. Not sure whether it was intentional or something went awry. Also not sure whether I hated it or loved it. It was interesting for sure. Scrambled Eggs: Cooked just right, not dry, not wet. But not that voluminous. Not that warm. English Muffin: Nicely doughy and an upgrade from your typical Thomas' variety. Also not warm. Also not crisp. Home Fries: Having seen the photos previously, this was what I was looking forward to most, because they appeared heavily seasoned. They arrived indeed heavily seasoned, but unusual seasoning, and I think heavy on the cumin, which isn't a standard ingredient. A few crispy bits scattered underneath, but the main cubes were limp throughout with no crispness. Not that warm. They had to have either been hanging around a while or reheated. Maple Sausage: If it wasn't for a hint of browning in a few spots, I'd swear these were cooked in a microwave. Very steamy, dull gray, not that warm (notice a trend?), and zero crispness (ditto). If the menu hadn't said Maple, I would never would have guessed. Bleaker than the neighborhood, as the photo suggests. Pancake: Gigantic, so one is more than sufficient. Coarse texture and somehow both fluffy and very heavy. Not bad, and easily the best item of the breakfast. Maple syrup is an option and the small pitcher sufficed. Service was fine. Besides struggling with temperature and texture, the food took a good while (a little more than a half hour) to arrive, and that was as the first order of the day. Nothing was disastrous, nothing was a fixable error, and the disappointment spanned enough items that if wasn't worth asking for a re-do, waiting another half hour (or more) for it, and feeding the parking meter again. Who knows, on another day, everything might've been hot and crisp. Or maybe I'd have had better luck with other items. There are plenty of five star reviews for your perusal, but, sorry, this isn't one of them. Yelpers can see the twos and the fives and decide for themselves. read more

The parking is pretty tough, and the growing homeless epidemic makes the locale slightly less appealing...but the food makes up for it. I've come here numerous times, and I've been really pleased with the drinks (apple cinnamon-rimmed mimosa on a fall morning, yes god), andouille sausage, French toast specials, and the cinnamon roll pancakes. However, the potatoes and toast? always fall short and lack a lot of flavor. I appreciate the rustic style of the restaurant being in a house, but seating is extremely cramped when you're not at a booth. I wish this restaurant took reservations in some capacity. read more

The friendly front of house sat me right away at the upstairs bar, which has 3 seats. There's a real lived-in feel to the establishment. I went with a granola French toast special. I realized belatedly that I hadn't specified that I wanted the wheat toast option, but the waitress didn't catch it either. Then it took nearly 20 minutes to come out. The fruit was delicious, and honey with vanilla yogurt is a classic combination. But I wanted much, much more crust from the French toast. The granola was soft - it should've sat in the skillet for at least two more minutes per side. And it was plated in the yogurt, making part of the bread soft. I got a real kick out of reading the breakfast cocktails menu, which included not only mimosas, but also the bourbon smash, which is a bold choice for a breakfast drink!
