Came by Hilo Hawaiian BBQ on a Friday night and was surprised it wasn't busier because the food here is always pretty good! I've been let down recently by a certain other Hawaiian BBQ spot (you know the one), but Hilo has always been very consistent in terms of service and quality. I ordered the two-piece Spam musubi, and it was on point. No complaints. I also got the chicken katsu, which was cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. It came with rice and two scoops of mac salad, and the mac was flavorful. My wife had the BBQ mix, and the portion size was nice. She really enjoyed everything on her plate, and it was clear they didn't skimp on quality or quantity. Prices are still very reasonable, which is getting harder to find these days. We usually come here when in the area and crave some Bbq chicken and Spam Wasabi. Today we ordered for entire family and ordered some of the same food other Hawaiian restaurant's have. We got Bbq chicken, Bbq Beef and Chicken Katsu. The family meal also came with rice and Mac salad. The portions was smaller than others but it was enough for 4-5 people. Place is clean, has restrooms and enough tables to dine in. For a small plate it's worth it and moderate as far as price. We came here last week to pick up the family meal deal. It is a good deal and comes with a lot of food (rice, veggie, mac salad and 3 protein) and we also order two orders of spam musubi comes with two pieces in each order. My dad was craving short ribs and this is one of the closer Hawaiian spots in American Canyon. We came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and it was empty, they cook and prepare your food as you order. It wasn't busy and our food came out fresh. I personally like short ribs, the side sauce made it a little more tasty, came with rice and their macaroni salad is just ok to me. My mom go the seafood combo plate which comes with shrimp, fish, calamari, and chicken. It was fresh. I don't think I've tried their spam masubis here but I think it's a competitor to L&L in Vallejo. This location has been here for many years so I'm glad to see it still thriving in this plaza close to super Wal mart. There's plenty of parking! Even then, he didn't give her a box--I had to go up myself and ask again. When he finally handed it to me, he did so with an attitude that made it clear he was upset. It seems this place has gone downhill quite a bit over the years. My son was craving spam musubi and we were nearby so I figured why not. I got him the $9.99 chicken katsu bowl, comes with a can of soda so not a bad deal. He liked it, no complaints. I got the chicken combo for $10.99 +.50 up charge for double mac. Food was ok, but I remember it being better and their cabbage used to be really good, now it's just crunchy and greasy for no reason. Spam musubi was disappointing and skimpy on the spam (Quickly has way better spam musubi) but $5.75 for 2 pieces was not a bad price compared to other places. Service was ok, I like the free lemon water dispenser on the side. I may give this place another chance in the future. Hopefully I was just there at a bad time. read more

You have the option to opt out of the standard two scoops of rice and one scoop of Mac and change it to whatever combo you like to all rice/Mac or half and half (additional pricing based off of choice). I did get more bbq chicken than katsu which was about three thighs of bbq chicken to the one in a half of katsu chicken. The sauce they give you isn't much at all. It's half of the standard to go size of most restaurants and they weren't filled to the top. Their teriyaki sauce wasn't my favorite and wasn't really sweet. I didn't like it at all so I didn't even bother with it. Although the chicken thighs were juicy and flavorful enough I didn't need a sauce. Katsu sauce was better. read more

My favorite location for authentic delicious hamburger steak with gravy. Unlike other local spots, the gravy has a nice consistency and flavor. The hamburger patty is hand formed and not pre made. I recognize in a lot of reviews, here and other restaurants, people make such a big fuss about someone not saying hello (greeting and bowing to their knees for them) with a big smile to them. I assume you must feel that you are privileged, and are so used to people patting you on the back and kissing your pinky ring wherever you go. The prices are high and the portions are skimpy. I stopped going here and would rather get L&L delivered to my house instead.

There is no hospitality like Hawaiian hospitality, so believe me, if I am not on any of the beautiful islands of Hawaii, any island restaurant I walk to that is a chain, will have my expectations low. However, at this chain, the food comes out quickly and you are in and out in no time. Although the hawaiian bbq places in the area are limited, this is one of my go-to's. How is serving chicken not only this thin (in the photo), but also very dry acceptable in the food industry? What I said about this chicken katsu being dry? That's astronomically more true for their BBQ chicken and beef short ribs. I could keep on going with the switch from sushi rice to jasmine rice, a mere tablespoon of cabbage, at the bottom of the plate and the BBQ meat marinade tasting worse. I'm not ashamed at all to be giving such a brutal review because of these unreasonable prices. I really enjoyed this spot years before but I can't recognize the food anymore. Location is a bit hidden in the corner of the american canyon plaza. They have a self-serve kiosk to order, which is new. It may be set up due to covid or having short staff. I waited in line to to place my order. Later, I did notice the staff did take an order for a person on the register. I waited for about 10 minutes for my food.
