Came in to check out Taqueria El Pelayo's new brick-and-mortar location! I've tried their food truck across from Nations plenty of times in the past and have always really enjoyed their food, so I was excited to check out their new location--especially since it's closer to my house too! I came in around 4pm during their week-long $2 taco special, so it was pretty busy. The lobby is a bit small, but they have a decent-sized parking lot along with street parking. They also have an outdoor eating area with a few benches and a covered top, which I really like! Like I mentioned, the lobby is on the smaller side, but I think it works perfectly for their walk-up-and-order style of service. The decor is simple but still has a fun and lively feel to it. Their menu has a good variety, just like their food truck--and maybe even more? I could be wrong. LOL. The staff was super nice, and they seemed pretty quick with getting everyone's orders out, especially considering how busy they were. The one thing I think they could improve is adding some type of shade or pull-down window covering to block out the sun, and maybe some A/C if they don't already have it. The sun was BEAMING directly into the lobby, and since the space is already pretty small, it got quite hot inside while we waited to order and for our food to come out. Definitely something that would make waiting inside a lot more comfortable, especially on warmer days. Overall, the food was good per usual, and I'm happy to see Taqueria El Pelayo now has a brick-and-mortar location! I definitely look forward to coming back for more good eats. read more

Hermano! Vallejo now has a good, reliable Mexican food spot. After visiting the Pelayo brick 'n mortar on Springs Rd, we hired the fam to cater a party. Our guests were going crazy over all you can eat tacos and quesadillas hot off the grill. Carnitas, steak and chicken options stole the show, These fresh, made-to-order, authentic bites did not disappoint and plenty business cards were requested. Aside from the food, this family has customer service on lock! They didn't miss a beat making each guest feel welcome and like family. They consistently served with a smile and worked to customize each plate. I can't thank them enough for sharing pics and videos of our party. When I first moved here 18 yrs ago, there was NO taqueria that could compare to where I grew up until I went to their truck on Tennessee (pics are from the truck on Tennessee) . Fast forward to their new spot -- I've ordered from the Springs Rd location 3 times. 2 of the 3 times, the order was messed up. Just today, I ordered 4 tacos, chicken, all with cheese. There was no cheese. Their prices ain't cheap either!! $4 per taco + 75 cents EACH for adding cheese. Super burrito is $15. She remembers requests for extras such as salsas, limes, etc. you will get everything you ordered whether you eat there (there are benches near the truck) or order take out. This truck is in my rotation of trucks in Vallejo. My go to is the asada tacos. I like them with everything, and I always do get them with spicy salsa. It's been awesome to see them grow. I usually call in my orders to cut down on wait time but even when I don't, the service is quick. That's another callout I want to make- the service here is great. They give realistic prep times which is something that is much appreciated. Updated signage says they're open 7 days a week now. First off, the burrito and torta we first ordered was AMAZING the next day when I could finally eat. When we went the second time.... *CHEFS KISSES*. I got 2 pastor tacos, a cheese enchilada plate, and a shrimp and chicken burrito. And don't get me started on the red spicy salsa. We love taco trucks and this has gone in our top 5. Their beans were home made, the rice perfectly cooked. And SO MUCH FLAVOR. It is located next to a gas station and I'm glad we went early because there was A LINE as we ate our food. The Taqueria El Pelayo has been a staple here on the corner of Tennessee St and Sonoma Blvd (at the Valero Gas Station parking lot) for years now. I discovered this food truck 2.5 years ago and am so glad I did! The owner Guillermo and his wife Marisol are so hospitable and attentive as are their staff. The menu has expanded and evolved over time and keeps getting better. They recently added Birria Tacos and Steak & Shrimp Tacos which were both excellent! The Pelayo's Christy Tacos Dorados (chicharron & carnitas) was so tasty! So far, I have loved everything I have tasted so far over the years. Their food is just so rich in flavor, you know they take their time developing all their flavors. If you are a shrimp lover, their shrimp dishes are the best around! Their business is mostly takeout, but for those of you who can't wait to dig into their tasty food, they do have a couple pick if benches for you to sit down and eat (it is a little cold and windy on a cloudy/foggy day or when the sun goes down). If the owners are around (they come and go throughout the day) they greet just about every customer that comes by. They are so friendly and remembers all their frequent customers' name! So I've been here two other times in 2019 and was not impressed. I even got sick from the surf n turf burrito. But I figured with 5 more years of service they had to have gotten better and learned how to safe handle food better. I also know I'm a bit of a food snob, so I decided to give them a shot again. They looked like the best choice scrolling through DoorDash and no delivery fee since I'm only a block away. (Not very safe for a momma and baby to walk down Sonoma, but also felt a bit lazy) I would never, ever give another chance to this truck. I deeply regret spending $30 on this place. I really wish I could have my money back as I could only stomach like 4 or 5 bites. So now I have to buy something else from somewhere else! Dinner cost me double tonight, which sucks for a new momma who's barely back to work and wanted to treat herself! Something told me stick to tacos, you can't mess that up, but the pictures of steak fries looked really appealing. After picking up the bag of food and drink I was so excited. It was so heavy, so I figured it must be loaded! Ripped open the bag and yuck! It's just a clear plastic container of nacho cheese and potato mush soup oozing out the sides, with what looked to be about 3 MAYBE 4oz of Asada, a faint drizzle of avocado salsa. The best part was the decent amount of crema on top and on the side. The bites of meat I did get had 0 seasoning or flavor, which makes sense by the amount of nacho cheese sauce drenched on top. Any place with a secret to hide will load up on sauce to cover it up. In the picture I had two bites and mixed around the fries hoping for maybe a little more meat layered in or something. I get it, inflation. I've worked in the industry for 10 years now, so I know overhead fees like labor and goods have gone up dramatically. But no way frozen steak cut fries and canned nacho cheese sauce should cost the consumer $20. Not to mention my stomach is hurting an hour later as I'm writing this. Not surprising for a business owner who talks all this game about being the best to everyone whenever I see him at the salon we happen to both frequent. I'm convinced anyone who says this place is good must not have had Mexican street food that is actually good and likes when they have chorro. Do yourself a favor and just find one of the new tents that are popping up. I've had better luck with those places. The only positive thing I have to say is that at least the $5 coca was the largest bottle size! So I'm happy with the part of my purchase. read more

Came by around 5pm on a Monday. Was craving some quick feel good tacos and this spot definitely delivered. For the price and flavor it was well worth the visit. I got 2 asada, 1 carnitas, and 1 chicken and my bf got 2 asada and 2 chicken. The wait was not long; they were pretty quick. They accept debit/credit with a $1 charge so if you want to avoid that bring cash. The tacos were real good. I will say though the meat portions could have been better. I feel like I didn't get much carnitas and I had a lot more tortilla. The tortillas were also deep fried, I'm thinking they may do this to help with the sogginess that can happen but they were a bit tough to chew through. Overall I'm glad I gave this place a try. Yes, yes, yes, a hundred times yes! This place is *chef's kiss*. We ordered the super quesadilla, tacos, and super burrito with carne asada. The meat was flavorful and delicious! The "side dishes" of radish (not pickled), lime, pickled carrots and jalapeños were plentiful and added a great crunch and flavor between each couple bites of food. All of the food were all delicious but the tacos were by far my favorite. It was the perfect hor d'oeuvres for me.
