This is my favorite spot in R House. The build your own poke option is awesome, allowing a lot of customization. The ingredients feel fresh and high quality. Service is also very quick. I wish they had more pickled veggie options, but overall this is a very good poke option.

This poke place is fine. The food was decent quality but did not wow me. I have yet to find fresh, raw fish in Baltimore aside from oysters that really impress me and Hilo is no exception. The bowl itself leaned a little sweet for me. While the ratio of toppings to rice was good, the serving as a whole was a little lackluster considering the price. Perhaps the vessel is to blame but my portion did not meet the rim of the bowl and the lid is domed too, making it look even smaller. I finished it and felt a little dissatisfied. Staff prepared my order very quickly (it was as quick as tossing a salad). There are only ever a couple staff working the stall in R.House at a time, so if someone is cooking something in the back while the other is cleaning/doing something, you'll need to speak up for their attention. After receiving my meal it's easy to find seating in the spacious food court. R. House tends to get pretty loud on busy nights (even if it's only 50% full) while during the day it's loud with young families and children running underfoot.

This poke joint is inside the R. House food court - and I generally love the ambiance and environment of this whole place! Cute string lights both indoors and outdoors, and plenty of seating. A fun potential date spot honestly. With regard to the quality of the food - super duper fresh! Also loved the flavors of the food and sauces. I'm also picky with how much rice I get (I like a lot), and I was satisfied. Bonus - they label which ingredients have gluten. Amen!!! Can't wait to return!

OMG Get the Baltimore Tempura Maki Roll. Is it authentically Japanese? Probably not- in fact, it's ginormous, saucy, and tastes like the whole sushi roll was deep fried in tempura batter. But man was it good. I would go back just for that roll. It's in R-House.

Hilo is located inside of R. House in the Remington neighborhood. They serve sushi rolls and poke bowls as the name would suggest. While it's in a super convenient location, the food comes across as meh especially for the prices. I ordered a poke bowl (have not tried their sushi yet) and was pleased with it but not blown away. I got my bowl with sticky rice, salmon, tons of veggie toppings, and sauces. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I've had better poke for less money before. The sushi is also a bit pricey with rolls ranging from $12 to $15. A lot of sushi places have great combo meals where you can get multiple basic sushi rolls for the same price as one sushi roll at Hilo...so their menu doesn't provide a great value when it comes to sushi in my opinion (which is why I've never tried it). All in all, it's a convenient location to satisfy a hankering for sushi or poke but there are likely better options elsewhere.

The cherry tomatoes & big cucumber chunks overpowered the taste of the other ingredients (edamame, wanton chips, cilantro)

#thankyouThursday2021 Thanks be to God for the blessing of being able to purchase and have meals at Hilo Poke & Sushi! Great, caring, dedicated people with hearts as big and full of loveliness as their poke bowls! The only Poke bowl place I can find that offers fresh and tasty IKURA (salmon roe-my favorite) in addition to masago! This place is A-One!!!!

Hilo is significantly better poke than FOD where I most recently had some. Hilo's portions are very generous including the fish itself which is becoming rarer these days. You have the option of getting pre-set bowls or making your own. I chose to make my own and I liked that I could mix-and-match anyway I wanted. You have to be careful, because many things require an up-charge so if you aren't keeping your eye on things you could easily end up with a very expensive bowl. The baseline if you get just two types of protein and no items that require an extra charge is $15.95 which isn't cheap but given the size of the bowl and the freshness of the ingredients is worth it. However, it's $4 for a third protein and anywhere from $1-$4 for extra "premium" toppings. And the food was indeed fresh. The rice (I got a mix of sushi and brown) was soft, the fish was delicious, the veggies were fresh and tasty and the sauces were excellent. I would recommend the spicy Hawaiian. I love that they have crunchy peanuts as a free add on in addition to standard crunch toppings. So what kept this from being 5 stars? 3 things. First, it is a little overpriced once you start adding. $16 should include 3 proteins and to charge $4 for crab salad is a little ridiculous given most poke places have it as a free topping option. Second problem is that they limit you to 5 free toppings from a list of 15 or so. Most poke places let you pick as many of these as you want. Finally, as I said before, they should pare down the list of premium toppings. That entire list doesn't need to be up charged. But, despite those drawbacks it was still a delicious poke bowl and haven't found a better one in Baltimore. I'll be back for sure.

My review for Hilo Poké is long overdue. It's been one of my go-to carry-out options both before and during quarantine, and it's now one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore. I'm always delighted by the abundance of flavors and fresh ingredients. They don't skimp on your order here. I suggest ordering your own custom poké bowl - you can add so many ingredients and extras for no extra charge that it feels like a steal! I love loading mine up with alllll the veggies, fried shallots, wonton chips, pickled ginger and chili oil. The yuzu ponzu sauce is my fave. It's a bit on the pricier side (my tofu poké bowl usually comes out to ~$14 after tax), but it's so worth it for the portion size and quality. Also, the service is very friendly and helpful. Nutritious and delicious!

    10. Spin Room Poke Bowl

I walked over to Hilo Poke & Sushi (located in R. House) a few weeks ago on a Saturday. I ordered ahead on the Toast app so it would be ready when I got there. I tried an order of their crab rangoon (a pretty good version) and one of their poke bowls (Spin Room: salmon, hamachi, cucumber, red onion, edamame, wakame, seaweed salad, jalapeno, green onion, cilantro pineapple, mixed green, fried shallots, wasabi tobiko, masago, kaiware sprouts, takuwan, soy egg, and sweet gochujang over a white rice base). The poke was a good portion and had lots of flavor. They also offer choose your own poke bowls and sushi. It was pretty healthy, fast, affordable, and delicious. Definitely a place I'll keep in mind when I'm in the mood for poke or sushi!

TLDR: Probably the best poke I've had in the Baltimore area, but *definitely* the most expensive I've ever had Ever since the DMV's poke boom circa 2017, I've been obsessed with poke and have definitely crossed the line into becoming a poke snob. A poke bridezilla equivalent, if you will. Recently, grabbed lunch at Hilo and was pretty impressed by their menu initially since I find many poke places don't offer signature pre-built options. I should've probably gone with one of those instead of building my own because, boy, did it add up. Sure, I'm used to avocado costing that extra $1 or whatever, but here... everything extra comes with a surcharge... including sauce. After it was all said, done, and scooped into my bowl, I was looking at a $24 lunch. Everything was REALLY good, the fresh flavors meshed together well, but taking into account portion size and pricing, I'm not sure I would come back. I'd be broke(r).

    5. Spicy Hawaiian Poke Bowl
    Tavia G.

This place is a really great option for poke in the area. The menu is huge with a ton of pre decided combinations which is always appreciated for those of us who get overwhelmed with create your own options. The food was yummy and fresh. The spicy Mayo was awesome, and they definitely don't short you on toppings. My only real complaint was that it was definitely super pricey for the portion size. I paid $15+ for a pretty small bowl. Aside from that, I really enjoyed it here and I will be back again.

    How beautiful!

I added this casual spot to my list a couple months ago, but didn't have concrete plans to check it out. Driving to Manassas and back on I-66 from where I live would cost half of my brain cells and all my patience. However, a few friends and I drove out to Shenandoah this past Friday evening, and I made a convincing argument that HawaU would be on the way. By the time we arrived, we were all incredibly hungry and ready to wolf down anything edible. The ordering process was easy: we ordered and paid at the counter, grabbed a seat at one of the few tables, and waited ~10-15 minutes for the food (parts of it are made to order). LOCO MOCO (BOWL) - 9.99 The chipotle-sized bowl was topped with loco moco: white rice base topped with hamburger patty, fried egg, grilled pineapple slice, and a generous pour of beef & mushroom gravy, plus sides of fresh cabbage salad and mac salad. The gravy nostalgically reminded me of the ones I'd get from cafeteria-style school lunches -- thick, salty, slightly starchy, yet oddly comforting. The egg, hamburger patty, and rice were pretty standard, but the familiarity of the gravy tied the whole dish together nicely. Both salads were good -- the cabbage was more light and refreshing, while the mac salad felt a bit heavy after all the loco moco. Since it's my first time eating loco moco, I can't say how it compares to others. However, I found HawaU's incredibly comforting and hearty. It really hit the spot for me, and I ate the whole bowl within 10 minutes. The loco moco is definitely their signature option and a must try. My friends who got the spicy pork bowl and udon thought both were just OK and not special.

I came as part of a large group dinner. I appreciate that they took large reservations and sat us in a nice spot in the middle of the restaurant. The server was nice and patient, but I did notice his jacket smelled like cigaret smoke. I asked what to get, since the menu is *huge* and overwhelming (I'm not sure why sushi, steak and pad Thai are on the same menu?). He recommended sushi, so I got a flaming dragon roll (I forget the exact name). Anyways, everyone else also ordered and the food came relatively quickly. Now...when I tell you this is the worst sushi I've ever had. Again, I hate being negative but I have to tell it like it is! When they first presented the dish, it was cool because they serve it on fire. I knew that they had sake in the dish (probably so the flame can keep going after they take it out of the kitchen). However, when I bit into it, the sake was *extremely* overpowering. I couldn't taste anything else except the sake. It was extremely alcohol-heavy and I could not finish the dish. I asked others to try it, and they all agreed that it was too heavy. The prices were also very high for what we got. The only food I enjoyed were the appetizers, but they were still unremarkable. Overall, I regrettably cannot recommend this place. None of the dishes stood out, and the sushi was shocking.
