I stopped in on a whim while driving by. From the parking lot, which is a bit tight, it didn't seem busy, and noticeable once I walked in. I was greeted promptly, and the host tried to seat me even though I mentioned twice that I wanted to place a to go sushi order. I was given a menu, a pencil, and a sushi order form, but the form wasn't very self-explanatory. I tried to get the host's attention to ask a few questions about quantities and how certain items were prepared, but he seemed distracted by other activity in the restaurant. While waiting, about 10 minutes, I noticed the decor was bright, the sushi chefs were neat and clean, and the preparation area looked well maintained. In the end, I took a guess on my order (California roll and lump crab meat) , and once I got home, I realized I made a solid choice. The sushi tasted very fresh (although the crab didn't taste like lump - it was still tasty) which definitely stood out and made the experience better. I ordered enough for lunch that day and still had leftovers for the next. Will I go back? I'm not sure, but I might try again on a different day and dine in. read more

I ate way to much, but it was glorious. This is not my typical neck of the woods, but it was close enough enroute to the Kennedy Center that I checked it out. So glad for this dining experience. Although a bit tricky to park upon arrival, there is a huge parking lot behind the building that always has spots available. Typically we are seated immediately but it does get busy on the weekends around 7pm with take out orders and large parties. Dining in is a very casual vibe, I prefer to sit at the bar to watch all the beautiful sushi be made! They have a variety of drinks and wines. We ordered the tuna nigiri, beef lettuce wraps, sushi, and fried ice cream. Everything was delicious, fresh, and came out perfect temperature. We thought that for that price we were going to get your average octopus, red snapper, tuna, etc. instead it was 8 awesome pieces. The Hippie roll was a texture bomb of yum. Yellowtail scallion was bigger than normal, and the D-5 had a lot of fish. The only reason I am not giving this a 5 star was because of the ambiance. Everyone has a favorite sushi place and this is ours. Over the past 10 years or so since they opened we've eaten here at least 70 times and takeout probably another 300. Why we like it: high throughput means fresh food, and these are some of the biggest cuts of sushi around. Inventive rolls, some interesting appetizers, and consistent service and quality. We've rented out the basement for parties and are on a first name basis with half the staff (who have a really long tenure on average- some of them have been there the entire 10 years! I had the M&M Roll, my girlfriend had the Rainbow Roll, her husband had the Chow Fun Rice Noodles with Chicken and my hubby had the Sesame Chicken and Shrimp and Beef Fried Rice. Upsetting experience today at Umi Sake. When we received our entrées, mine was not the correct dish. I apologized to our waitress, and explained that it was not what I had ordered. The waitress said immediately that I "clearly" ordered it (I don't eat duck, nor would I order a $36 entrée, but that is beside the point). I know that waiting tables can be a very difficult job with abysmal pay, so I can look past a bit of poor communication. However, when she returned with the correct dish, she went on to explain that I should have spoken more loudly while ordering, and that she was fighting with the kitchen because they were going to make HER pay for the incorrect order. Again, while I think it is strange to confront diners in this way and I have never experienced something like this in any other restaurant, I don't blame the waitress for being upset. I would be too if my boss was illegally forcing me to pay for a mistake like this. It is illegal in the state of Maryland to force your employee to pay for something as insignificant as an incorrect order. Umi Sake is engaging in illegal business practices by forcing a waitress to pay for this montetarily non-signficant mistake. The cost of this dish would have been barely anything to the restaurant, however the cost is significant to a waitress working for tips. My partner and I were disgusted and very upset because the confrontation felt misdirected, and we are appalled at Umi Sake's business practices. I would avoid dining here for risk of having a similar experience, and I would not recommend spending your money here. Edit: We did not finish our meals and left after this interaction. It's been awhile since I've visited this restaurant, and there are noticeable changes since the last time I've been here. Tonight our experience was being seated (in a corner sort of out of the way from the rest of the customers) and menus and waters were brought to us. Shortly after, we knew what we wanted to order for meals. This is where the not so fun part happens. We ordered 2 entrees, and 3 sushi rolls. 15 minutes later, the 1 entree arrives. Nothing else. Okay, maybe everything else will be here in just a minute we thought. 5 minutes passed and the sushi comes out. The second entree still has not arrived. We gave the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was still cooking. 10 minutes later, we're almost finished the 1st entree( we wound up sharing) and the sushi. Our server not once came to check on us. There was another server who floated in the area due to her table, but we hadn't seen our server since she brought the sushi out, almost 20 minutes ago. Finally the other server curtly says "what do you need?," when she notices us looking for anyone to help us, which we replied our other entree... so she goes to check on it. 5 minutes pass, no servers were seen whatsoever even still. We had no communication about what happened to the other entree, if the other food we'd ordered was alright, or anything. We're done eating what had been delivered thus far, and my husband goes to find an employee somewhere to tell them to cancel the second entree because we were ready to go since there had been no communication by any staff still. Our server finally comes to our table after we cancelled and said she forgot to put the order in, but there was no attempt to make the experience better. She didn't apologize, offer to give us the dish on the house, remove an item that we had ordered from our check, nothing at all... It felt like Umi sake had no vested interest in customer satisfaction or customer retention, which is sad to see in an establishment. I've been to Umi Sake about 6 or 7 times, mostly when I lived near it. I've never had a bad meal there, and never expect to. If I lived closed, it'd be one of my go to sushi places, as the owner is awesome, the staff is awesome, and the food is always good. This may be a 3.5-4 star based on quality, quantity, and pricing of the sushi. Solid quality, large portions for prices slightly higher than Yamato. Overall, value is reasonable, but nothing spectacular. Beyond the sushi, tempura and noodle selections were terrible. Beef chow fun (flat noodle) is terrible even by fake beef chow fun standard. It is on par with Chinese takeout places on a bad day. Noodles are soggy, slimy and are stuck together. I have never eaten something this badly executed before. Singapore noodles are wrong from the moment I laid eyes on them. They are brown, a la soy sauce noodles. Not a hint of turmeric for coloration. Not a hint of curry powder or anything resembling spice or taste besides soy sauce. Noodles are a thicker rice noodles. Not the classic rice noodles but luckily due to the thickness at least the noodles aren't soggy. But everything about the dish was wrong. Tempura shrimp and veggies were terrible as well. It was more Long Johns Silver batter than Tempura. Once again, portions were large, but that was mainly more veggies than shrimp, and batter made everything feel heavy and oily. All of this speaks to a kitchen without a good chef. I would avoid ordering anything besides sushi at this place. Honestly, I would give this place a 2 star if it wasn't for a reasonable sushi execution. read more

I've been to a ton of sushi places in and around Baltimore (from Shoyu Sushi and Nanami Cafe in the city to Yamato which is close by this place), and this is by far my favorite because of the combo of 1) great fresh sushi + 2) amazing portions + 3) very fair prices. Although this place doesn't seem all that much when you walk in (it's not one of those "authentic" places where you see the chef cutting your sashimi... honestly just looks like a typical dine-in restaurant), the staff are super friendly and the food is delicious and filling. My fiancé will get an assortment of sushi so i cant really remember his favorite rolls lol but MY favorite thing on the menu is the Honey Honey appetizer which is basically if Crab Rangoon and Jalapeño Poppers had a delicious baby. I always forget to take a picture of them because i get too excited and eat it! I also either get the Teriyaki Salmon or the Seafood Yaki Udon (pictured) and my son loves the Shumai (shrimp dumplings) so you really cant go wrong ordering anywhere on the menu. Pretty good, they have above average sushi, and as always they give fortune cookies. The service is pretty good, and the food is relatively fast. Also, the noise level is pretty mellow, if you're a "quiet dining" kind of person. I do have a small complaint about the bathrooms, there is a hallway to the women's one which is really easy to notice, but the men's bathroom is almost concealed on the other side of the room. Decoration is nice, and I would recommend coming here for some good sushi. They have all the classic rolls, such as the California roll, and they have special rolls that only they have.
