Nanami Cafe has a lot going for it. It has a great location looking out over the Patapsco making for great outdoor seating in warmer weather. The servings are pretty sizeable - they really love putting their sushi platters in a boat which seems appropriately sized. It all makes for a great date night or small group dinner. It is staple in Fells Point being open for a couple of decades so the people sure do believe in this place. I thought the cuts of fish were very generous and tasty, but I was a little disappointed in the sushi rice. I found it a bit mushy and not seasoned properly. We mainly ordered sashimi or rice-less dishes. The cucumber salad was just that - rounds of cucumber. We got this with Crab Meat, but there didn't seem to be any dressing on it so it was fairly plain. I enjoyed the Sashimi Roll - they are large pieces that will stretch the average mouth to fit. We got a side of spicy mayo and found it more sweet than spicy. I appreciated that the Sushi & Sashimi plate came with small seaweed salad. All in all a great spot I would frequent if I lived in Baltimore - you really can't beat the location that enhances the dining experience. read more

I am shocked it has taken me years to finally try Nanami esp when I used to eat sushi once a week when I lived in NYC. What a great location right on the water with plenty of outdoor seating. We tried 5 different veggie rolls: tempura yam, oshinko, cucumber, avocado, and the veggie roll with the most interesting combo of tofu and cream cheese and crunchy onions on top! Went with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day this year! We were nervous because they didn't take reservations, but we went around 7 and were immediately seated. We also got to sit at the elevated tables by the window where you take your shoes off and sit on pillows which was really unique! With our apps, this was more than enough food for two people, and came out in a giant boat. The sushi and sashimi both tasted very fresh and delicate, with our favorites being the yellowtail and tuna. If we weren't so stuffed we definitely would've gotten some more a la carte after! Prices generally felt reasonable to us, with the sushi boat at $65! There was a bit of a wait for the food to come out, but with it being especially crowded for Valentine's Day it was understandable. We started with the shrimp gyoza which was tasty and not overly fried. The sushi was the star of the show; we ordered a spicy tuna roll and added cream cheese and a flaming dragon roll which literally comes out over a flame. Namani is low key one of the best and most consistent sushi places in Baltimore. This place has a great central location right next to Vino so wine can be had before or after your meal, but Namani also has a great sake and beer selection (not to mention champagne by the bottle so I that's always a win for me) You can sit at the bar and watch you sushi be made or enjoy the Kotatsu tables (and with the traditional seating you will have to take off your shoes). They also have regular tables in the middle of their space. But no matter where you sit you will get great service. What I appreciated was that the rice to fish ratio favored the fish so you knew they weren't trying to skimp you on the pricier elements and the fish was fresh. I've been here twice now and will be back because of the affordable quality nigiri and prime location by the water. The restaurant itself has a cozy vibe, not too fancy. That's fine-- I'm all about food over ambiance if given the choice between the other. I am a sushi enthusiast (gimme the omakases!) and was hankering for some fresh wasabi, but I guess they don't offer that here. The service is alright. The first time around, I sat on the mats with a friend (pretty neat that they offer that, I've only seen it in a few izakaya style restaurants). The waitress was nice but felt like the timing was off for when we wanted certain things (ordering, receiving food, receiving the bill). The second time around, I sat at the sushi bar and was able to be helped more promptly and in a pattern that made more sense to me. The sushi chefs were friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. As far as food goes, the aburi toro is phenomenal! 3 large chunks of flame-seared toro marinated in a citrusy umami sauce for $20. The rockfish is topped with a spicy orange garnish that adds a great little kick. The salmon belly is quality. You can tell by how fresh, vibrant, and near-translucent they look. It's also my favorite nigiri! The tuna belly was good, not as marbled as I'd like, but still good. Thick, juicy portions. I ordered the Good Time Roll and the Love Roll. The Good Time Roll is smoked salmon and cream cheese. The Love Roll is soft shell crab, smoked eel, avocado, cucumber on the inside, and then tuna, salmon, and special sauce on the outside. Both were excellent! Used a Groupon here over the weekend. They seem to have groupons pretty often. Overall the place was very nice. The seating is very authentic with regular tables and horigotatsu style seating. The menu had a good amount of rolls and the food was pretty good. Only knock I would say is while there was a variety of rolls, many of them were made of the same ingredients. The hand rolls however were delicious and you can custom make them. The shumai and tempura were very delicious. The noodles were also good with a lot of vegetables and shrimp.
