50 nights over 5 years at three different hotels in the Southport area leaves me with an inescapable conclusion... there is no really good hotel in the area. This Hilton is ok-ish. The bed is pretty comfortable and the pillows are decent. And, unlike other hotels nearby, the WiFi works well and there are lots of power outlets. The bathroom is small but functional. No toiletries to speak of. The walls could use some paint and the carpet needs to be cleaned. I shudder to think what the room looks like under black light or UV light. There's a full breakfast available. Consistent with the theme, it's okish. I wouldn't eat it more than once per trip. To their credit, the staff are more engaged than the neighboring hotels. Better training? For now, I'll stay here. I wish I had a better option. read more

We have 3 people, so we got a room with 2 beds, we were informed we lost our room to a track team, mind you we booked this hotel 3 months back, and apparently they just booked it and "needed it more" Now one of us has to sleep on the floor and it is very unfair given the fact we were booked in this hotel 3 months before. The hotel is decent, but it needs renovation in the rooms. The lobby and dining area is nice. I got seriously snapped at by the reception staff when checking in, but that person was clearly overworked and felt sorry for them. I wouldn't return, but if you just need a room for the evening and don't care if it's modern/nice, this is a good place. I think they offer room service, and that is very hard to find in the area. Luckily I got a room with 2 queen beds. The first one smelled like BO! The second one was ok but I was still grossed out by it. I mentioned it at check out and I was comped one nights stay which was very nice. The location of this hotel is great! There is a walking path nearby in addition to plenty of shopping and restaurant options. The staff are very nice and accommodating and there is a very small gym on site. It's an older hotel and it's not fancy but it's an ok spot to stay at. The price is reasonable and the location is good. read more

This is a value option for the business traveler. Garden Inns are known for having a fridge and microwave in every room. This location did not deviate from that winning combination. However, the room was a bit dated and the bathroom was also in need of a refresh. The fitness center is basic. No mats if you're looking to do any core work or quick yoga. There is an indoor pool. Ruth's Chris in the lobby is a great amenity, depending on your meal stipend! I probably won't be staying here again. The place looks great on the outside, but as soon as you get checked in, it goes downhill from there. Our rooms were substandard quality and disappointing. The toilet didn't work and the heat wasn't working properly either. I had to fix the toilet myself and had to run the heat manually. The breakfast at the hotel was not complementary. It cost $15.95 each and was over $75. for 5 people. The selection was minimal and was cold. The staff was rude and unhelpful. I had better service at a cheaper hotel. The only decent thing about this place was the exceptional customer service provided by the bartender (Ryan). Booked a 6 night stay here for work nearby. Being a Hilton honors member, I was given the standard bag of complimentary water bottles, along with a nice greeting card from the general manager. It came in handy since I sent him an email the very next day advising of my dissatisfaction with the mattress in my room, which felt more like a trampoline, as well as with the lack of hot water both from the sink as well as the shower. It was barely luke warm at best. About an hour after sending the email, I received a response from the GM, who also CCd another employee asking that employee to go ahead and check on my room and see if there was any spare mattresses in the warehouse and go ahead and swap it out. He also advised the other employee to report back any progress. Well, that was the very last I heard from the GM, and never heard back from the other employee either. I returned to my room that night only to find that absolutely nothing had been done, except the regular housekeeping. The next morning, I went to the front desk and asked that they please send someone to check on the lack of hot water in my room. The front desk employee wrote a note and ensured me that it would get looked at. Once again, I returned back to my room later on that day only to find that absolutely nothing had been done. I checked out the very next morning and went to a different hotel. Coincidentally, I did hear back from the GM after checking out, only to hear that they tried several times to duplicate my issue with the hot water and were unsuccessful, and he claimed that there was no issue. This only added insult to injury. I wouldn't return to this hotel if the rooms were FREE. read more

As a Hilton honors member I hate to leave a post but this hotel was awful. I stayed with my five-year-old granddaughter and upon entering our room, while we were able to check in early, our refrigerator had such a stench that we had to call and have them come and replace the refrigerator with one that did not smell. we then lost hot water in the bathroom multiple times and were unable to take a full shower. No one address this or did anything to compensate us about it. We went swimming in the indoor pool together with our group and had a great time. Unfortunately, 24 hours later all five of us became extremely ill with high fevers, stomach issues, vomiting, diarrhea, bodyaches, and chills. I can't prove that it was directly related, but the only place we were all together was in the hotel and in the pool. I did use points, but I stayed two nights so I used all of my points to stay at this hotel and unfortunately this was the experience we had. This is certainly not up to Hilton standards and definitely not for the price that they charge per room. read more

I have been staying at that hotel for the past 2 years when traveling on business. In the past few months, the quality and cleanliness of the hotel and rooms has degraded significantly. Water in the bathtub was not draining properly. By the time I finished my shower, I was standing in water angle deep. Hallways are not vacuumed as the same garbage stayed on the floor for the 3 days I was there. Staff as the breakfast was not very friendly either. Disappointing and time to find another hotel in the area. read more

In the past 13 months, I've stayed in Durham at nearly a dozen different hotels. It took me 13 months to find one that I would like to return to. As of this writing, I've only spent one night at HGIDS, but as I usually spend the night in Durham when headed N or S on I-85, I'll make this inn my preferred lodging. It definitely helps that Ruth's Chris is right next door. Everyone was friendly; my room was super-clean, comfy bed, etc. One minor complaint: In my morning shower, I noticed that water was leaking out past the curtain and onto the floor. I believe it was a problem with the shower curtain rod, and I could not easily the curtain to contain the water. I finally bunched up the front of the curtain, and tucked it behind the grab bar. That works. Itty-bitty complaint: When I was ready to check out, I got a trolly to carry my "stuff" to the car. Two options: * A large rectangular trolly on 4 wheels. I've used these hundreds of times before, and they are rather unwieldy. * A smaller triagular trolly on 3 wheels. Much more suitable for my amount of baggage, but with clothing hung on the overhead bar, I could only "drive blind." A very small problem. Next time I'll carry my hangered clothing in a separate trip. Or bring only transparent clothing. :) All in all, the Hilton Garden Inn Durham Southpoint is a hit with me. Clean, convenient and quiet. I was only here for one night but the property was just what I needed. It's the same sort of layout as other HGI hotels with a lobby bar and restaurant, fitness center, business center and such. My room on the sixth floor was quiet and clean, roomy enough to spread out my stuff and not be tripping over furniture. The fridge and coffee service was helpful and the bathroom was good. Plenty of hot water. Wifi worked well. I would stay here again. read more

That Hilton Across the Southpoint mall. Yea,, that's the one,, with the Chris Ruth restaurant attached to it. Anyways, it's a very nice hotel. It has that nice homey atmosphere to it. Big lobby with the nice high ceilings,, open concept with a little sit down area with a TV tucked away at the corner. The staff is friendly,, they checked me in,, I got my key and I'm on my way to my room. The room was nice,, a big giant king size bed. It has sheets, it has pillows and a comforter. There's a bathroom with a shower and tub combination. Sink with a faucet and a mirror above it. Also a toilet that flushes. I even get a window just in case I want to look over the traffic passing by. Anyways,, it's a hotel,, it's nice that it's newer,, but a hotel for me pretty much is a place to put my head down for the night so I can be well rested to handle whatever tomorrow throws at me. I didn't say anything while I was there as I didn't want to be 'that person'. They really need to have a housekeeping manager go through the rooms before a guest checks in. This room was in the 200's. Trash behind the chair and under the beds. Big dents in the mattresses from so many people sleeping there need to be updated. Very uncomfortable and a major reason for complaint. Hall lights don't work. Only 2 towels. Only decaf coffee left to make with one creamer. The Keurig is dirty with water left in it. Hairs in the shower. It just felt dirty. Paint not repainted where it was torn away to put in new thermostat. Tacky. Ice machine didn't work. I'm giving 1 star because my husband liked the breakfast. All this for over $200.00 Wish we had had the room that those who left 5 stars had. With so many hotels in the area we have no reason to return. read more

Pains me to give no stars to a Hilton but this has been the absolute worst business trip ever. Imagine four days and three nights with no hot water, no ability to wash. How is the kitchen still open with no hot water running- or is there water there and not just for those of us spending thousands on rooms? I'm disgusted and really want to meet with my team today to discuss removing Hilton from our preferred choice list . I want to be as fair as possible while writing this review. First of all I want to give a big shout out to Deborah who works the day shift at this hotel. She is pleasant, patient and very professional. From the moment I mad made my reservation, I felt comfortable with her. So thanks Deborah for being the most positive part of this review. I came in for a funeral and I've been here for about 8 nights so far. Here are a few things... There is no FREE continental breakfast. I was told that you have to pay for what was truly a low budget breakfast. (However, Coffee is free, tasty and the cafe workers appear to be in good spirits) The front desk staff is "Super Rude"! Wow I thought it was one person, but really it's almost the entire staff especially the night crew. The male workers were the most unprofessional and I did my best to limit any type of discussion with them. I asked for a print out of my days so I could take a look at my bill around the 8th day or so. The gentleman told me that he was unable to provide me with a print out because he believed that my rate of stay was inaccurate. And so the banter with his customer "me" began. We went back and forth in quite a contentious manner. The most upsetting thing was his tone and his implication that I was somehow cheating the hotel. I was shocked! Anyway, this all happened at around 6 a.m. about 5 minutes later, I heard a knock at the door, a sheet of paper slid under the door and there it was! A piece of paper...a print out of my days. Now all of that to upset me because he didn't want to print a sheet of paper. I'm sitting here shaking my head right now. There is limited housekeeping service unless you request it. But they fail to inform you of this at check-in. On the second day of my stay, I realized that there were no coffee pods or sugar in my room. I called and a man from housekeeping brought up 4 pods. (Thanks) Sheets on the bed were too small and some of the sheets should be retired. I had two queens and one bed had strands of hair though the flat sheet. The rug needed to be vacuumed!!!! A dirty rag was left in my bathroom From housekeeping around day 4. I tossed it! Pulled the So somewhere around day 8, I arrived in my room around 12 midnight. As I'm going to in the bathroom I'm looking for toilet paper. (Usually there is at least 1 side roll available) Hot damn!!!! Good thing I wasn't pooping because there was none to be found!!!!! WHAT!! So I called the front desk and asked if I could get a roll. The gentleman who answered said, " Can you come down to get it?" Ahhhhh, first of all why would you ask me to do that? Secondly, why do you want your guests parading through the halls at midnight with rolls of toilet paper. And why ask a woman to leave her room to do it! When I told him that I was unable to come down, he said, "I'll do it for you this one time."...........................WAIT, HOLD ON, NOPE, STOP.....DON'T DO THAT! DON'T MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOU'RE DOING ME A FAVOR BRO! I put my clothes back on and hauled my hinny down to the counter at 12:30 a.m. On my last night, I arrived late again. The doors were locked. We had my 82 year old mother with us. The man who was supposed to open the doors was. It at the desk. When we asked him to open the doors, he did. What happened after left me speechless and afraid. The night desk person confronted my brother , screaming and yelling at him. It was awful. He was angry because we had asked him to let us in with my mom who had difficulty walking. The screaming was so bad, basically from the front desk employee, that another guest waited to make sure that we were safe. I did share this experience with the manager and Deborah the next morning. And yes, the day manager was kind enough to give my my mom and I both a complimentary night stay. But I waited to complete this review because it's important to know what you may experience at this location. It's not the room, or the cleanliness, it's the supremely and shockingly rude staff. read more

Great location from the interstate. My husband and I took a trip here to spend our anniversary. Good...I love the hotel brand. They practice social distancing and the day time staff were great. Wonderful location to the mall and restaurants. Negative....guests...a couple decided to use this weekend to fight out their issues and we most definitely could hear them. After contacting the staff on duty 3 times nothing was done. The young man that worked the night desk explained to me that he would not get involved but could move us to a different room. I declined the move because we had already changed rooms and did not want to pack our things up again. Had he made more of an effort to contact security or the police I would have given them 5 stars. read more

This hotel is conveniently located just off the highway and directly across the street from Southpoint mall. Additionally, there are numerous stores and restaurants within walking distance, including a Starbucks! This hotel is sufficient for work travel but it's nothing to write home about. Room was large but AC did not function properly (the room was really muggy despite the thermostat being set to 68). Room was pretty clean, but could have been cleaner. I'd stay here again based on the location and convenience factor. read more

I stayed here recently for work. The hotel is conveniently located just off a major highway about 15-20 minutes from the airport. It is also located in the parking lot of a shopping center that is across the street from a large shopping mall, so there are plenty of restaurant options. This mall could also come in handy if you realize that you forgot to pack something for the trip. The hotel is pretty basic, as it is a business traveler hotel. The room was spacious, the bathroom was spacious, and the bed was very comfy. The room also had a decent workspace. The hotel has a small restaurant, where I had breakfast. It was ok, nothing special, but got the job done. There is a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse attached to the hotel, too. This may outside of the typical Hilton Garden Inn customer, but it is there if you don't want to leave the hotel to eat. The staff was pleasant and very friendly, too. read more

Very disappointed for so many reasons. The rooms are shabby. The closet door was broken and the "king" size bed was smaller than the frame. In order to take a bath, you had to call reception for them to bring a tub stop. We were told that the guy with the key to the room with the tub stops had already left and so he was called to return from home, which he nicely did. The hallways smell as if they were doused with Febreeze and were ice cold compared to the rest of the building. The restaurant messed up our order in a significant way and the excuse given was that the chef had a different menu than the one provided to customers. Huh? The staff was mostly rude and the manager couldn't be bothered. For what we paid, we did not get the expected experience. read more

While this hotel is very nice as far as hotels go we had a bad experience. We checked in about 7:30 pm and due to a medical condition I needed to soak a foot. I noticed that the water was extremely hot but I was looking for it to be as hot as I could stand it that night. My husband doesn't sleep well and he got up about 3:30 am and decided to go ahead and take a shower. The water was scalding hot even the cold was hot. So we complained but had a challenging time with management. They were very disrespectful. They are supposedly comping the room but not confident that happened. The restaurant manager was wonderful though and gave us breakfast on the house. Wont stay again. read more

I read these reviews before choosing this HGI for my recent business travel and chuckled at the silly people who mentioned the slow elevator. However, when I got there and waited...and waited...and waited some more for that damn elevator I realized why! That shit was slow as hell! In fact, I'd say it's the slowest I've ever experienced. So now that the bad is out of the way... I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. As someone who doesn't care to eat at chain restaurants or go to the mall, the option of the large upscale (i was told) mall across the street was not appealing to me, but it probably is for many people. I liked that the hotel was very clean and the breakfast was decent. And had I felt the need to eat an expensive, semi-decent steak I could have just dined at the Ruth's Chris attached to the main level. On that note - if you stay here and don't like chain restaurants - try Bin 54. I had a great meal there. These people who actually *like* the HGI beds are insane. The beds SUCK. Not just at this location, so I'm not dinging them for it, but at the HGI chain as a whole. Fortunately for me the cleanliness, friendly staff and on-site bar makes up for it. read more

They also have plenty of outside 'lounge' seating, which I appreciate while stuck in a city for a week. Shocked at treatment of a longstanding Diamond member!! I booked a night at this place for an important business meeting as it is 5 hours from where I live. The day I was to leave to check in, my wife wound up in the ER, so I called this hotel and informed them directly that I would be arriving early the next morning as I Couldn't leave until I Was sure she was okay. The manager said this would be fine as I made them aware. I then drive all night and show up that morning in a rush to grab a shower and make my meeting. The rude lady at the desk informs me they not only gave my room away, they were going to charge me a no-show?!?! (Even though I was standing right there, suitcase in hand) When I protested and explained I called ahead, she ignored me and answered a phone call. I then found a nearby Marriott who kindly got me a room. I assumed I could call the Diamond desk and they would help with this insane issue - no such luck. After detailing my case thoroughly, they informed me they would inquire with this hotel. The next day I get a snide little email telling me the "no show" would stick because they were "sold out" that night?? I will obviously be disputing this charge. I love the Hilton Garden Inn because I know what I'm getting (free internet; indoor pool; free business center; clean room; clean bedding, including the duvet cover) and this location lives up to it. There is a huge mall across the street (Southpoint) and a strip mall in the same plaza and a Ruth Chris steakhouse attached to the hotel. Terrible, fraudulent experience. Checked in on Thursday night went to front desk Friday morning because I noticed looking at my bank account I was overcharged for room. They told me I had never checked in to the room so charged me a no show fee (I had a room key and had slept in the room..clearly checked in) Said they couldn't fix it and would call me to adjust amount but never called me. Was charged more than quoted rate after I was told initially there was a veteran /first responder rate then later told there was no such rate. On top of the room charge for 5 nights I was also charged a $154.21 no show fee for a room I showed up for and stayed in for 5 nights. Tried to call corporate to get them to reverse it they said the night I checked in they had a system wide outage and apologized but said fixing it wasn't up to them. They said they would send a "warning shot" to the hotel to get them to respond to me. No response. Was charged a fraudulent fee for a dirty dilapidated room. They offered to give me 80.00 and a free nights stay. I want the 154.21 I should have never been charge din the first place. Pics attached of room. Let me start by saying I stayed here two weeks ago to move my daughter in college and had no issues. So I booked it again and I booked through hotels.com just like last time but room as advertised was not room I was given today. I went to guest services and she instantly told me because I paid through third party I had to go through them. Never really wanted to help and I showed her my confirmation which stated room that was advertised and paid for. she said they don't have those rooms at property at all. I contacted hotels.com they were saying that's info they were given by hotel so I'm stuck in the middle but I paid my money and I don't care how it gets resolved but I shouldn't be in the middle. After me debating with hotels.com on the phone and guest services employee Iryna at hotel I was finally given a different but better room. Not room I paid for because hotel doesn't even have them. So my question is you don't know what is being advertised for YOUR company with third parties! I was satisfied regardless. Checked in new room and throughly cleaned and sanitized room and went to dinner. Came bk after dinner to shower and hair is in one if the rags but I don't trip but then open up pull out couch to Lysol and food is in pull out bed. I go to address it and go to front desk. She never apologized about food in bed and didn't even Look at picture but then referenced she did me a favor by giving me a different room. I PAID for this, this isn't a favor. Then I'm approached by a Caucasian man about my business and I tell him to mind his business and I'm not acknowledging him and he proceeds to engage in my conversation in the lobby with no mask. She never asked him to stay out if it or where was his mask. So we all know how this ends with black people today and white people. I didn't feel comfortable being in this hotel so I contacted hotels.com and I am checking in another hotel for the rest of my stay. I have never witnessed so much unprofessionalism in my life and to think with food in pull out bed and Covid out here this means the rooms aren't being throughly cleaned. That also means sheets weren't changed. I'm appalled. I was more taken back by her unprofessionalism especially when the white man interfered and interjected in my conversation and was very rude and hostile. I am never staying here again and my black people beware! I was so mad I didn't record him and her. I had my daughter with me and this could have gotten worst. Im not the one but kept my cool so it was best I left. I'm contacting corporate and manager. read more
