The hype is legit. Food, ambiance and service were all exceptional. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and sat at a cozy table near the stage where they had fantastic live music. My husband and I both got tikka masala dishes. He got chicken and I got the shrimp. In hindsight I wish I had tried the Saag just so we could have tasted a different sauce. However, the tikka masala was truly the best we've ever had. And we are always chasing excellent food so we've had our share. The dumplings were great but we would likely opt for a different appetizer as they didn't really blow us away. The service though is really what puts this place over the top. We were in a bit of a time crunch so I'm disappointed we couldn't stay longer and try dessert so we will definitely be back when we can make it down to SoNo again. read more

Came here on a rainy Sunday evening when there was live music playing. We got lucky arriving just before the crowd, so we were seated right away. Service felt a bit understaffed, our first order took a while, and our second order never arrived. They did try to make it right, but by then we had already been there a couple of hours and the kids were definitely not going to keep sitting and waiting. We also had a small hiccup with the chai tea: it comes unsweetened with sugar on the side, but the sugar was forgotten at first. When it did arrive, there was no spoon and not quite enough packets. The chai itself was decent once we could actually sweeten it. The momos were surprisingly flavorful on their own, with a nice curry spice kick that made them enjoyable even without dipping sauce. The sauces they come with are also tasty, just be careful, as one has a pretty strong heat that lingers. We also had the chicken garlic soup, which was quite tasty with fried garlic chips on top. I don't know what they marinated the paneer in but I'd love that recipe. So good. We also had both the vegetarian and lamb Thalis. Sooo much food and it was amazing! Medium spice was the right level of heat for us. We also grabbed an order of the garlic naan. They were the fluffiest, most delicious naan I think I've ever had. We'd give this place 10* if we could. The dining in experience was lovely. We were welcomed right in and sat next to a large speaker. The music was great, but the speaker was so blaring loud that I could not hear the person across the table from me speaking. The server happily let us move to another open table so we could enjoy our meal better. Speaking of the music, it really was a nice touch to the dinner. I expected to hear something more traditional but it was all acoustic covers of well known music. The meal was fabulous, everything came out just right and didn't take long to come out. I first tried Himalaya for take out, and while the order was fine, I had some issues with the phone call. They wouldn't accept a coupon I had, but worse, the girl on the phone repeated every detail of my credit card (number, exp, cvc) out loud. I couldn't wait to try this new addition to the heart of South Norwalk. Himalaya Sono is a Nepalese style restaurant with live music as you dine. My favorite part was the live music. The duo that night were such a delight to listen to. They sang beautifully and covered a variety of classics. Although the service was quick, the food was a hit or miss. To start we ordered the momos, which were a type dumpling that each came filled with a different protein/stuffing. The chicken momo was my favorite. Another appetizer we enjoyed was the chicken chili. Always a favorite for me and wished it was offered as an entree. For an entree we ordered a plate of The lamb curry to share and unfortunately we were disappointed. We found that it lacked taste. I wish the tables were bigger too. It was such a tight squeeze for just one plate and a couple drinks. They have a lovely outdoor area that I would like to experience this summer as outdoor dining is always a plus. read more

The food was absolutely amazing, we had a prawn starter, a vegetable curry, and a shrimp noodle dish and un-friggin-believable!!! Such a gem in SoNo! Not only were the food and drinks delicious, but the staff was incredibly accommodating. We had made a reservation and got stuck in some traffic, knowing that Himalaya closes for a mid-day break at 3:30. We managed to get there before they closed but were still dining during the break, as was one other group, and they didn't make us feel rushed or forgotten about. Truly a level of service you don't see too often anymore! The momo set was delicious, and we enjoyed the sauces to pair with them. Great drinks as well, and the seafood sizzler was a generous portion. The dining room was beautiful, and they had a nice outdoor area as well. The food and service were very good.we came in around 4:50pm on a Tuesday night. It was very good. We got the appetizer lasuni govi and that was delicious- Cauliflower cooked in what looked like tomatoes paste, garlic, ginger and other ingredients. I had chicken thali and that was very good. It had a small chicken curry bowl, small cauliflowet curry bowl, piece of radish, custard green steamed, lentils, onion fritters, big bowl of basmati rice and rice pudding. The food and service were outstanding! We made reservations for 4 people for 6:15 pm for a Saturday night and we were seated promptly prior to 6:15pm. There were still many tables that were empty. We ordered the shrimp tikka masala, chicken mikhini, tandoor chicken, the Momo set (appetizer), and the lamb thali. The chef personally came to check on us twice, once after the entrees were served and also at the end of the meal. I've been eating at Himalaya for years. From Yorktown to Newtown their food is excellent. I've never had an issue with food, service, or anything. SoNo has a different vibe from the above towns. It took a while for them to open there, but I am happy they did. I finally got to eat at that location and it was the same great food I've eaten at the other locations over the years. We're local Norwalk residents so we decided to try the recently opened Himalayan Sono and wow, they did not disappoint. Anthony (owner) and Mohan (waiter) were very attentive, friendly and helpful with introducing us to their menu. The restaurant had a nice open space for indoor or outdoor dining, live music on Saturday evening that had casual cool vibe. The food, cocktails and service were absolutely amazing !! Cocktails weren't watered down like other places. We wanted strong drinks and that's what they gave us. The chicken dumplings and sauce were outstanding. I had the mushroom chili appetizer and the spicy vegetable thali -- everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. You can tell the kitchen actually cares about what they're making. Had to take it to go because of timing, and the manager/owner personally checked in to make sure it wasn't because something was wrong. It wasn't -- this place is friggin' awesome. We had the steamed version and they left us excited for the entree which did not disappoint. We had the Himalayan Curry and Veg Mahkini with a side of garlic naan that was light and flavorful. All the entrees were well balanced and so good we had zero room for dessert but I did sneak in a mango lassi which was smooth and light which paired perfectly with our meal. Table, very small - barely adequate for apps, glasses plate ... mediocre western cover band live music - fine, not too intrusive or loud First shared dish based on recco's - Lamb Chili - you've got to be kidding me!! ... hard chippy protein (think jerky) - not sure if it was lamb - bathed in ketchup with a serving of mushy par-boiled veg ... It was kind of me not to send this $18+ "dish" back ... Honestly, I debated taking it home to serve to my dog ... It was disgusting Entree - Tandoori Shrimp ($27) ... better than the app but 8 unspiced, unsalted, overcooked/rubbery medium sized shrimps served on the same bed of par-boiled veg as the app - at least no ketchup ... nothing to recommend ... *definitely* not cooked in a tandoor ... passable, but just barely OK - Maybe a bad night for the kitchen - excusable The part that was *inexcusable* is that at *8:45*, the lights went full kleig, the bill was presented, payment demanded and clean up of neighboring tables commenced ... think mopping, loudly collecting plates/utensils/etc ... at least they didn't put up the chairs ... we had barely been served our "food", still had full drinks ... Staff is friendly, attentive, and can answer whatever questions you have about the menu, or the similarities and differences between Nepalese and Indian food. Great selection of traditional and modern fare. They even have a gift shop. You can check it out while you're waiting for your table, waiting for your food, or on your way out. This gorgeous gem of a restaurant is a must visit. Impeccably decorated inside while also sporting a simple but welcoming patio, and a small stage indoor that showcases music of the same region, it is one of the best dining experiences you'll ever encounter. The food is heavenly. We started with the assorted momos, two chicken, two beef and two veggie that were absolutely mouth watering. The accompaniment sauces, one quite spicy and the other not at all were also wonderful. We ordered Himalayan curry and Veg Makhini, with garlic naan, both of which were some of the best dishes we've ever had. We ordered everything medium heat and the balance was a perfect compliment to the savory perfectly blended spices and flavors of each dish. With a welcoming and attentive staff and owner, our experience was one of our best. If you're craving authentic Nepalese food, this place can't be missed. Being from England, it is always hard to find good curry, it just isn't a thing in the US. in 40 years, I found the best curry I've had in Himalaya Sono. My Lamb Vindaloo was clearly made fresh and to order and each dish in my wife's Thali was delicious. We shared mixed dumplings to start which were exquisite and ordered Naans and a shrimp noodle dish which was very good but honestly now we had too much food. (Which we took home) The staff were all Nepalese and so friendly, and only too happy to please. The music on stage was a really nice touch, playing popular songs, and well received by the diners there. We sat inside but there was also a small patio outside that was nicely done. Finally, the price was really a steal at under $100 for two including drinks, a real bargain. We will definitely go back and hopefully take the family or friends, a genuine find and strongly recommended. read more

Himalaya Sono is a TOP NOTCH restaurant! The food here is outstanding. And the selection of foods is fantastic. There are separate menus that cater to vegan,vegetarian, and gluten free diets as well as standard menu that includes all dishes and meat options. You cannot ask for better than that especially as a vegan myself as I know how challenging it is to eat out. When it comes to taste - they have got it going on here. We started out with momo or dumplings which came with 2 sauces: a mild and delicious tomato sauce and an extra spicy dipping sauce (I did not try but my husband did and said it was HOT!). For my entree I had the bharta vegan dish which is mashed eggplant with mild spices. It has zero heat which is a must for me since I cannot tolerate any spiciness these days. I had it with a vegan bread option-poor- and LOVED every bite. This is certainly not a dish that is common in many of the Indian restaurants typically go - but I wish it was because it is so creamy and delicious. My husband had the vegetable thali which is an assortment of mini dishes including a soup and a curry. He ordered it medium heat and he said the curry definitely had a good spicy kick. The service was amazing too as the owner greeted us and repeatedly came to our table to make sure everything was satisfactory. In fact our first table was a bit wobbly and he did not hesitate to move us graciously. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and they offer outdoor seating as well. We went on Saturday evening and there was live music which was not overbearing ( we sat close to the small stage set up in the rear). WOW. Amazing food, atmosphere and service. If you like Indian food, this is wonderfully similar (but of course their own)! Their Himalayan korma (traditional korma sauce but a combo of beef chicken and veggies) and biryani are outstanding and we loved their momo too. An award winning restaurant in the real sense. The staff is well trained, they gave us some delicious recommendations of food and drinks. We tried veg momo which comes with a spicy sauce and a very spicy sauce. The combination is superb filled with flavours and finely chopped vegetable filling. The chilli chicken was coles with perfection where chicken was tender and had balanced flavors. It was one of my favorites from tonight. Then we mover on to one of the entrees which was vegetable stir fry noodles and they were cooked just perfect soft and flavourful balanced with a Lot of vegetables. A non veg thali was our next choice which had everything - lamb, a side vegetable curry of potatoes and cauliflower and lentils with rice and salad. We asked for himalayan special naan and garlic naan. The side salad with the thali was my personal cherry on the top. The portions of the thali were just perfect for an entre for one or 2 people to share. It also had a small porto on of dessert which is a rich rice pudding and was heavenly. We had ordered drinks pinot noir and a passionfruit vodka cocktail. All in all it was an amazing experience with live music and in the heart of norwalk. My Chana masala and my friend's saag paneer both were delicious. The live music was great as well. Not overly loud to allow us to still converse (and we were at the table nearest the stage).
