We had such a great experience at Saffron in Norwalk. We had the mango lassi to drink, which was an immediate hit. We tried the delhi chaat platter, lentil soup, and gopi manchurian as appetizers, which were all great. For our mains we had palak paneer, paneer tikka masala, and garlic naan, and everything was delicious. The flavors were spot-on, the paneer dishes were rich and comforting, and the portions were extremely generous -- we had leftovers for days. The service really elevated the experience. The management was kind, attentive, and made us feel truly welcomed. At the end of the meal we were offered complimentary chai, which was a lovely gesture. The carnatic music in the background added to the relaxed, authentic vibe and made the evening even more enjoyable. Great food, excellent hospitality, and a cozy atmosphere. This is my 2nd time here but this time I made sure to take pictures. The food is so yummy. Palak Paneer is so fresh and really lets the spinach shine. They asked me to give a spice level from 1-10 and nailed it based on my request. My family loved the chicken biryani and I was stealing some the raita that came with it because it was so good. I am Indian, and this is by far the best I dian food restaurant I've tried in the US. The food tastes like Indian home cooking and is made carefully with quality ingredients. We have been to Saffron many times. My wife loves the vegetable pakoras, eggplant Bharta, Bhindi . We've also had the lamb, mutton and chicken dishes. My favorite is the 'kadhi' - a staple N Indian dish made with yogurt, chick pea flour. The Chana masala were full of flavor too. I have ordered takeout quite a few times from this place. They had amazing kebabs in the past. However, lately they aren't maintaining quality and consistency. We ordered the chicken hiryali kebab, lamb tikka, paneer butter masala and garlic naan. The chicken kebab was bland and tasteless. The paneer tikka masala has over cooked pieces. Disappointing. Lamb Vindaloo: tiny cubes of lamb (like 1/2") and way too much vinegar in the sauce. Asked for it at a spice level of 7 (out of 10) when she asked me -and it was maybe a 4. But we're from TX and can take some spice.... Lamb Saag: again, tiny cubes of lamb, but the saag was nice with a good consistency and flavor. I asked for a spice level of 5 and it was about a 3. Vegetable Korma: weird consistency, unidentifiable veggies and it was too sweet. The sauce is typically made with cashews and coconut- this one was made with pineapple. It was yuck. Garlic naan: burnt on the bottom with not much garlic and it didn't taste fresh- it tasted pre-made. Value: with the tip it cost like $75, and while the portions were decent size and they were generous with the rice- the lamb was skimpy and the meal wasn't very good. I wish I hadn't spent that much on it. I don't like to leave bad reviews. Maybe the recipes are from a different area of India than I'm accustomed to, or maybe the chef was being creative with his sauces. The owners were very nice and I like to support local businesses. Lots of people on here seem to love this place, so maybe it's just a regional taste thing. Maybe it's someone else's favorite Indian restaurant, but it's definitely not mine. Stopped by on a Friday night. The place was quiet with mood lighting (dimmed lights). My date and I sat ourselves. The waitress was kind and helpful, I told her I was vegan and she said they could happily make the fish I chose vegan. The only fail was both meals were zero on spice level, my date wanted 10/10 and I wanted 3. Other than that, the food was delicious. We had a lovely time there. This was an incredible meal! Every single dish was handmade and each recipe has been passed down in the family. The ambiance was lovely and the service was excellent. The ingredients are high quality and the owner took time to chat with us and explain some of the dishes. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the portions are sizable. It's phenomenal that so much good Indian food is so consistently served at Saffron, run by a cute senior couple. I'm a credible critic; I've objectively tried some of the best Indian restaurants in the country. Saffron has made a regular patron out of me and I delight in trying a new menu item every time I stop by for a bite. One thing I never fail to order though: the kulfi dessert. Seriously the BEST I have ever tasted. I hope this restaurant sticks around for a while, I'd rather quit eating at Indian restaurants all together than miss my fix at Saffron. read more

I went on a Sunday for lunch. To my surprise, they were doing a buffet lunch, so that was really nice. When we first got there, I think we were the first group to come, but the place is pretty small and got packed pretty quickly. The buffet was very small and didn't have a lot of vegetarian options and the food was just ok. The staff was working very hard but they were pretty behind with the service as well. The bread comes fresh to your table but it was over cooked and took awhile to come (our food was already done by the time the bread came out.) I am not sure if there are a lot of options for Indian food in the area, but this is what I found with a quick yelp search. Ordered a couple lunch specials thru DoorDash for pickup and it was ready right on time. You can select an entree and side of chickpeas or potatoes. Includes rice and half piece of naan. Taste of food was ok and but rice and sides tasted kind of stale. The flavors of the entrees were also not that tasty. I so wanted to love this place. With all the excellent reviews, I thought it would be fantastic. My traveling companion and I stopped here for dinner. We ordered the veggie pakoras. Unfortunately they were a little overcooked and dry. Then I ordered the chicken jalfrezi and the chicken was a little bit dry. My companion ordered the shrimp korma and the shrimp were rubbery, implying that they were overcooked. Spices were spot on, service was spot on, they couldn't have been nicer. In the area and looking for Indian food, we found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try! It definitely deserves the four star rating and perhaps even an extra half! Our only issues were waiting, for naan, for the check, but to be fair they were very busy and the majority of their customers were Indian, so a good recommendation! We initially planned to order from the menu but our server recommended the buffet and we were glad we listened! About 15 food choices plus mini samosas and pakoras - both, we agreed the best we'd ever tasted! A nice variety of entrees; vegetarian, chicken and even a goat curry, fresh plain or garlic naan brought to the table and refilled as often as needed without having to ask! Tandoori chicken was also brought fresh and hot to the table to anyone that indicated their desire. Every dish was a little more delicious and complex than the usual version and I counted 5 times that we said this was the best I ever tasted (and we eat a LOT of Indian food - even make it ourselves!). Their garlic naan in particular was outstanding, my husband even asked our server - (who is also apparently chef owner?) as she replied that it was her own secret recipe, I believe it! It was delicious and the fluffiest I've ever had! The service was friendly and pleasant and even though this was a buffet we tipped 20% because the two lady servers were non-stop with water, naan, chicken, and then after the buffet an offering of Kulfi (homemade Indian ice cream) which I almost refused (being completely full!) but decided to try it. With a dusting of mild spices and saffron and topped with slivered almonds, this was a lovely creamy surprise. For $15 for all of this, it was probably the best the best value meal we've had in a long time. I have travelled and lived across the States. This is THE most authentic North Indian food place you can find in the area, and by area I mean everywhere from Westchester to Westport! Everything including the food, the cleanliness, and most importantly the friendly, welcoming service just makes our day every time we are here. Few of the all-time favorites here are the chicken tikkas, dal makhani, bhuna chicken, akbari kofte, and lacha parathas (whole wheat based bread - only a few places across the US do these this good)! Their Punjabi Kadhi is to die for, I dont think I have that good, delicious, smooth Kadhi anywhere else outside my mom's kitchen. Just love it! Definitely give it a try! read more

I have come here looking at the excellent reviews most people posted here. This place is not as big as other Indian restaurants in CT. They serve a daily lunch buffet. On our first visit, the owner of the place was very friendly and explained to us about each and every dish. She seems to be a very nice friendly woman. She told us that they prepare food there just like how it made in the Indian kitchen (without adding any extra ingredient to enhance the flavor), so the food would be different from our typical Indian restaurant food in the US. We were very impressed in the first visit and soon in less than a month, we were here again but this time around, we did not get as excited as our initial visit, I guess it's ok to include 1-2 restaurant-style dishes other than the home-cooked tasting dishes, else we might get bored.
